I had an amazing experience that I wanted to share dining at the shoemakers. I decided to sit bar side at the restaurant since I was dining alone. I opted for a filet mignon, which was perfectly cooked to perfection, and was paired with fingerling potatoes and asparagus. It was a healthy 8 ounce size portion of filet mignon and sides. I ordered a deliciously made Cosmopolitan as well. The restaurants layout and atmosphere was rich & open spaced for comfortable seating. Let me begin with the positive. The atmosphere and ambiance was average, for an "upscale" steakhouse. The waitress was nice. Now for the real review. My wife and I both ordered a 10 ounce ribeye mashed potatoes asparagus. We arrived with reservations at 7:30pm. Ordered 15 minutes later but didn't get our meal until 8:36pm. A couple that arrived 15 minutes after us got their food and finished before we received ours. When I questioned the server on the time lapse, she stated appetizers help with the time. I wish she had just stated the kitchen was running slow or I made a mistake when I put in your order. When our food finally arrived it was overcooked. We ordered medium well and both, extremely thin, ribeyes were notably over cooked. They were overcooked for a well done steak, let alone a medium well steak. My wife continued to eat her food, although she was not satisfied but I sent my steak back to be recooked. On further consideration I told them to cancel my order. I appreciate that they did not charge me and offered a free entree, which I did not accept, but I wish more accountability on the poor attempt at preparing a steak at a I repeat, "upscale" steak house. I repeat "upscale " because that is how it was described to us when we checked to the Craddock Terry Hotel. Long story short, food was terrible. Both steaks were over cooked and dry. The potatoes were terrible. This was the worse meal. I sent mine back and I didn't want anything else from them. You can get a better steak from Burger King. read more

I moved to downtown Lynchburg before Shoemaker was there. It's the kind of restaurant that you have your parents take you to when they come to visit because you can't afford it yourself. My parents are gone these days so I had to bring my 78-year-old self! Restaurant week seemed like a good time and the price fixe meal sounded just interesting enough to look like it would be a winner. The restaurant week dinner is an amazing combination of flavors selected because they blend into each other so well. Took hubs here for his birthday. We typically come here for special occasions as this is considered upscale for Lynchburg. The view from outside is so grand with the valet and the large shoe will definitely catch your attention. Here's what we ordered: -Crab dip: Decent appetizer, nothing special. -Ribeye Steak: It was alright .. a little underdone for me as I like my steak medium well. Blood was coming from the steak. The sauce on the steak was not good to me either, I ended up returning this meal. -Crispy Fried Chicken: I thoroughly enjoyed this meal and it was some of the best chicken I've ever tasted. -Roasted Rock Fish: My husband liked this rock fish, it was a nice change from the typical salmon or cod. -Iceberg Wedge: Just a basic salad, not much of a wedge. -Spinach Salad: Not much to this salad either. -Chocolate Blackout Cake: Best thing we had. Was very moist and the mousse was fabulous. -Creme Brule: They sent this out as we sang happy birthday to my husband. He was very appreciative and the creme brule was delicious! This use to be our favorite restaurant. We hadn't been in a while, so we went back. All our favorite menu items are gone. The kitchen was so backed up for entrees that we ultimately told the bartender to cancel our order. They brought it out right as my husband was settling the bill. He was unimpressed by the porkchop and said he was glad he didn't pay $40 for it. The appetizers we got were good but small portions. I had such high hopes for a great steak on Valentine's Day. First of all my wife got the filet and she said she liked it. I ordered the ribeye which is $67 item in the menu. It was chewy and over cooked. One side had been charred and the other side barely put on the grill. No way to cook a steak. I should've complained to the waitress but it took us a solid hour to receive our meal and it was getting late. Plus I was on a date with my wife and didn't want to spend it complaining. The waitress said she was reprimanded and he refused to blacken or char it, nor would he prepare as medium. It was my boyfriend's birthday weekend (5/14) and I wanted to treat him to an amazing dinner out. I found Shoemaker's on OpenTable, reviewed the menu, and thought this would be ideal. We were pleasantly pleased! Although we didn't have reservations, the hostess suggested we sit at the bar and was very accommodating. Our bartender, Paul, was phenomenal! I tried ordering a drink, but, mistakenly looked at the wrong drink menu; however, he made a variation of it... an apple shooter. It was great! We asked him about some of the appetizers and he recommended the Bacon Steak and the Seared Ahi Tuna. The Bacon Steak was delicious, crispy and savory. Although the Seared Ahi Tuna did not initially look appealing, it was PHENOMENAL! It was seared ahi tuna, avocado, pickled red onions, ginger and hints of jalapeño. When pairing pieces of the Bacon Steak and Seared Ahi Tuna, it was a flavor explosion with each bite! My boyfriend ordered the Old Havana and I ordered a Titos Vodka Mule. Both drinks were amazing. For our entrees, I ordered the New York Strip with the herb salad and substituted broccolini while my boyfriend ordered the Filet Mignon and Lobster Ravioli. Everything was chef's kiss! Truly perfect! I was able to give my compliments to the chef as he made his rounds. Paul checked on us, wished my boyfriend a happy birthday, held great conversations with us and made the entire evening memorable. The decor of the restaurant was elegant and beautiful. If we could less stars we would. Our group of 6 dear friends went out for a special dinner. Our total bill was over $500. Several of us got shrimp... 2 with risotto and 2 with grits. So salty and awful. Most of us ate only 2 bites. The manager apologized after we complained and wow took a whopping 6 dollars off each bill- however there was a 22% gratuity charge PLUS a service charge. So I personally paid over $70 for a wedge salad, one glass of wine and 2 bites of risotto.Will never be back and do NOT recommend. read more

If you like dog fur in your food then this is your place! I find it quite odd and disgusting that when I was eating the chef here likes to groom his dogs in front of the restaurant and leave the dog fur to float around and end up in your food. Overpriced and a little disappointing. Dinner at Shoemaker's used to be a monthly ritual. It has always been expensive but the steaks, service and atmosphere were worth the money. Then Covid hit and we stopped going. Finally decided to try it again (knowing that they had changed chefs a few times since Covid). When we walked in, the hostess station was empty. We waited quite a few minutes before someone approached us and asked for the reservation name. When we stated that we didn't have reservations, we were directed to the bar. The restaurant didn't seem busy but Ok- the bar, it is. The bartender was pleasant and made a decent drink. One person in our party ordered the salmon and said it was the best he ever had. I ordered the ribeye. It was cooked to order but for the price, nothing to write home about. It came with a few potatoes and a scant portion of asparagus. It wasn't a bad night out but it definitely wasn't worth the price we paid. Won't return anytime soon. read more

Ate here with a couple of friends last night and this is just a crazy good experience. The food is amazing, Chef Ed Scholly and his staff will make it a night to remember. I ended up ordering the Asparagus Risotto with added shrimp. The risotto was done perfectly, that creamy texture with a hint of chewiness was spot on. The asparagus had a good crunch and the poached duck egg added an intense eggy richness to the dish. American One of the better options in the area for fine dining, Shoemaker's continues to serve outstanding food. This place is set in an old shoe factory (hence the name) and is part of the Craddock Terry hotel adjoining it. For a long time this was pretty much the only place in the area where you could go for a higher end dining experience, but even with some new competition, Shoemaker's is still going to be hard to knock off that mantle. The bar area is decent sized and serves good sized drinks. I hate when you get a tiny glass when ordering a cocktail but are charged for a large glass... just pone of my pet peeves. Here you will feel you got what you paid for. Bartenders are very good - they know their stuff. There are some very good appetizers available at the bar and on more than one occasion we decided to just stay at the bar instead of sitting for dinner. The main dining area is low lit and can be good for a date night out or a business dinner. There are also private dining rooms available for small groups or meetings. Service is top notch and portions are large. Prices are higher than average for Lynchburg, but you won' regret spending the money. Overall a top of the line place and even better if you can find someone to take you there for dinner. Parking is tight - small lots and there is valet available unless you do not mind walking a few short blocks. read more

OMFG that was one of the best steaks I have had and let me tell you, I have had a plethora of steaks at some of the most premiere steak joints. I am not saying that to give myself a fancy status, but instead saying it to let you know that I have had some kick ass steaks. 2) We sampled a couple of wines because the brands were not familiar and we wanted to pick the best one to pair with the meal.
