It's funny -- I went to Shogun with my wife when it first opened and I loved it. I was like "we gotta get back there." So circle around, you know like 3 years later and we finally got back. It was just as good as the first time. Usually we like to rock the "little bit of sushi" + "some noodle dish" to split between the two of us, so when I saw the Spicy Maki Combo (3 rolls for $16) I naturally suggested that. The sushi is fresh. The sautéed noodles with scallops were even fresher, and it was the perfect amount of food for $30-$35 bucks, which for a good quality Japanese place for two people is tough. Wait staff cleans up after you quickly, but isn't in your face or annoying. Atmosphere is nice and quiet. Oh and I almost forgot about the parking! Parking on Lark Street -- enough said. Go on Cinco De Mayo like us and you won't have trouble finding a spot or a table. Cheers! read more

Some of the best sushi I have ever had in my entire life. Service could be a little faster but all in all great. I recommend trying the ccc roll and the chicken tempura roll. They are wonderful. I was excited to come back to shogun after having a good first experience with the pad Thai. Second time around, came in for some sushi and was pretty disappointed. Service was ok - we were he only people in the restaurant at about 4:30 pm, and the staff coming in for the dinner shift took their time before approaching the table. Service aside, the sushi rolls we ordered were tiny. I don't like to judge food on the size or amount, but It created a higher expectation for the taste in my mind. I ordered spicy salmon and the Hawaii roll. I asked for the spicy salmon without crunch - but it came with crunch. I didn't care much, except the crunch was more like a filler than an accent. The salmon tasted less than ok. The Hawaii roll was just ok, too. Final verdict: would not recommend for sushi. read more

Adequate sushi place. Rolls are decent sized, not huge. Sometimes they get a little crazy with the sauces on their sushi. Service was good. Only been during the week and its not been crazy busy. Location is good and there is parking in the back which is nice in this busy area where parking can be scarce. read more

I go here so often that pretty much all of the employees greet me by name not only in person, but when hearing my voice on the phone when I call ahead to order. The sushi is always fresh and delicious. I'm a big fan of the eel avocado roll. The chicken teriyaki is also great, along with everything that comes with that. I've never ordered from here before the pandemic and now I'm kicking myself for not doing it sooner. They have gluten free soy sauce, a must have for people like me who are highly allergic to wheat, and everything we ordered was perfect- green marbles were tasty and creative, sushi was fresh and delicious, pad Thai was spicy and flavorful, and appetizers were well portioned and inventive. Shogun (Madison Ave) has one of the best Japanese food menus in the Albany area, and certainly the best in the Center Square neighborhood. You'll find extensive options for both sushi and cooked Japanese cuisine here (I highly recommend the katsu dishes). Their delivery service is top notch. It's also a modern and elegant place for a dine-in experience, similar to their sister restaurant around the corner, Rain. Always quick delivery(granted I do love five blocks away) and fresh food. The rock shrimp is A favorite in my family. I find myself craving it. I tried the app sampler platter and was happy with everything. The Japanese fried noodles are my favorite as well, thinner than most Chinese noodles. The sushi is obviously the best part. It saddens me that Shogun has a 4.5 star rating, because frankly, that means that all other sushi restaurants in Albany are not salvageable. I might just have to turn a blind eye to Japanese cuisine in the capital city. It's not that Shogun is terrible (it's fair, as in not good, not great, but okay during times of need - like 2.5 stars teeter-tottering 3 stars), but 4.5 stars? I know that relativity is key when it comes to reviews in specific cities, but that's exactly what saddens me so. Is Shogun my only fair option? I've sampled the sashimi dinner, the seared tuna appetizer, the tofu and seaweed salad, the mushroom soup, the shrimp hibachi, and a cucumber avocado roll (all on separate visits). The rice wasn't vinegary and moist but less cohesive and a little bit rougher. My roll therefore did not go down as easily as what I had anticipated, and the seaweed paper proved to be wet through and through so that the rolls easily fell apart. Flavor wise it was as expected - cucumber and avocado. For both entrees and rolls, I do appreciate the option of selecting brown rice for the health conscious or just for that added fiber if you've been neglecting your fruits and veggies. The seaweed and seared tuna were both flavorful, perhaps too much so. After a first go at them, I've ordered them on separate occasions with the sauces on the side and then opted to dip at my own pleasure. The hibachi is surprisingly pleasant, although again, the heavy soy sauce makes the two accompanying dipping sauces obsolete and rather unenjoyable. I wish they could dampen the salt so I can actually use their sauces, which seem to have more complex flavor (sweet and tangy as opposed to a pure soy sauce flavor). The tofu salad is refreshing on a hot day. Lastly, the sashimi was standard and not incredibly fresh. The slices were medium to thick for the entree, but sliced very thinly for the appetizer. Considering the price of the seared tuna, you may want to opt for another appetizer. I do want to note that the ambiance at Shogun is relaxing and clean, which makes for comfortable dining. As far as prices go, entrees may not be too expensive, but appetizers and ordering separate rolls do add up. read more

I recently went to dinner to the Shogun with a group of friends. The restaurant was very clean and the service was attentive and prompt, which are all good things. My food order was taken quickly, as I had ordered a plate of Boston rolls (this was tasty, I'll need to order it again) and an udon noodle bowl with chicken (comes with a side of miso soup or salad, and I took the salad). This was delicious and a wise choice for ordering. One of the friends in the group had ordered a vegetable roll platter and the staff was courteous enough to switch one of the rolls to a sweet potato roll (which cost extra, but everybody was happy). This place somehow became a tradition for my fiance and me when we first started dating, and I like it that way. The food is amazing and lunch is a great deal. On Valentine's Day, they even hand out roses to all the women on dates! I've had all different rolls, their pad Thai, and a lot of hibachi and tempura dishes. The wait staff is also very sweet and accommodating. We've never had to wait for a table, but maybe this is because we tend to go at off-peak times. Everything is clean and fresh, which I wasn't expecting inland. Definitely recommended, even for takeout. They prepare it quickly and give you everything that would otherwise come with dinner. My husband & I went here last weekend for the 1st time. I love their foods, everything that we order was great, but I gave them 1-2 stars because our waitress was lazy & we had to wait forever to order & also to check out. My husband have to walk to the counter all time to find her & saw the staffs sit there & chit chatting!!!! We went to Shogun last week when I was in Albany on a business trip. I had the hibachi chicken and my co-worker had the Pad Thai. Both dishes were very good. Overall we enjoyed our experience. It wasn't out of this world blow my mind food, but good solid asian food and definitely somewhere we would come back to. The servers were sooo nice and very accommodating. Went here with a group of friends for a weekday dinner. I love an awkward waiter just as much as the next person, but this one took the cake! First he only took the order of one person at the table, only to realize there were 6 of us who hadn't ordered yet. So 15 minutes later we ordered. Then he had an especially awkward way of bringing our plates. He handed them to us rather than setting them down in front of us, and had no clue who ordered what when he brought the dishes. To top my meal off his hand was in my bowl of rice when he delivered it to me. That pretty much sealed the deal for me. The food itself was ok, with so many Japanese/Hibachi restaurants in Albany, I'd say skip this one. My chicken/shrimp hibachi was marginal.
