My boyfriend and I decided to stop at Shogun after a weekend of travelling for a quick bite to eat and we were pleasantly surprised. While being pretty affordable the inside looked extremely modern and upscale with a great bar and a separate sushi area. We took awhile to order our food because everything on the menu sounded incredible. We decided on the Hawaii Roll as an appetizer because we are big sushi fans and wanted to see how it compared to other places we like. It was amazing!! It was a basic salmon and avocado roll that was good, however it was topped with sweet aioli and wasabi mayo sauces which is what made it amazing. I got the Sesame Chicken as my entree and it was the best I have ever had! The chicken was cooked perfectly and the outside was slightly crispy. The sweet, sesame sauce was what made the dish though, and I couldn't put my fork down! My boyfriend literally had to take my fork away from me because I was so full but couldn't stop. It came with bock choy which I didn't eat and the owner came over saying next time I can ask to have any other vegetable instead, such a nice guy. My boyfriend got the blackened steak that came with tempura fried sweet potatoes and asparagus. The meat was extremely tender and, once again, the sake-ginger sauce was incredible. The waiters and waitresses were all extremely nice and friendly, we had about 4 waiters serving our table (granted it was an early dinner so we were one of the few people there). They were at our table to fill our water glasses before we even had the chance to put our glasses down. All in all we are absolutely going to go back again. The atmosphere, food, and servers were all fantastic and it is a great addition to this area of Albany. ! This place is more like a Chinese restaurant rather than a Japanese. I was on trip with my family and saw some good reviews on Yelp about this place, so I thought I'll give a try, but it was a mistake. I was craving for soup, so I had shrimp tempura udon and my brother had pad thai(which was a weird menu to be sold at a Japanese restaurant). First of all, the tempura was good. But even though I had a "shrimp tempura" udon, I only got one shrimp tempura and bunch of other veggie tempuras. Anyways,they were all well-cooked, and I could tell they use clean oil to cook tempuras. However, the udon was a little weird. It was not a udon soup, but it was more like a Chinese veggie soup. And when I asked the waitress for Shichimi, she didn't even know what it was! Next, the pad thai. Well.. It tasted more like lomein rather than pad thai. It was too sweet. It's a clean restaurant, but the food is not that great. read more

This is a consistently good place, I have eaten hear maybe 25 times and Ive had a good experience every time. Highly, highly suggest getting a golden dream roll. I have since moved to San Francisco, and this is still one of the best rolls that ive had. Make sure to get a golden dream and a Sapporo, you cant go wrong. Inside, very intimate and nicely decorated and you almost forget that you are in a bar neighborhood on a busy street. Service--wonderful and accomodating Food: had the app sampler which was knock out of the park good. My sushi though however lacked flavor--did not taste the mayo in the Boston roll and shrimp didn't have a strong meaty flavor and boyfriends hibachi was dry. I am going to say it.....this is the best sushi I have had in the Capital District. I ate here for a quick bite on lunch. The staff got me seated and took my order right away. I had told them I was on my lunch break and had limited time. I was with my wife and 2 month old and the Shogun staff were very accommodating. They made sure we had a booth that would fit his car seat in it. The quality of the fish here is the best I have had in the region. A reviewer who previously said the fish is not that good doesn't have a clue what good fish is. The yellow tail and salmon were melt in your mouth fresh. The Hawaii roll may be my new favorite roll. The owner came over to chat and check on us. I believe he said his name was Frank. He is a really nice guy and I commend him on investing in Downtown Albany. The inside has huge windows that overlook Madison Ave. All in all the interior is beautiful. I am kicking myself for never trying the Shogun in Delmar which I am equally close to. What I really like about this place is that I can tell the the owner really takes pride in offering a great dining experience. From the short interaction I had with him I am guessing that he is truly passionate about what he does. It is not that often where I find a place that has both top notch food AND service but Shogun on Madison definitely does. As I was getting into my car a server ran out and handed me my water bottle that I forgot. It is little things like this that add up to make a great experience. It was the worst tasting food of my life. It was like the chef forgot to incorporate salt into our food. My udon was just stale noodles in warm water and our rock shrimp was fried shrimp coated with mayo. My friends food was also entirely devoid of flavor. Shogun is excellent. We used it for takeout and also for a birthday celebration of about 15 people, and were happy in both cases. We especially like vegetable tempura. Salmon-based sushi and sashimi are also great. The takeout is usually very good, though some times it could be so-so -- don't really know if they have different chefs some days. read more

Well I'm a bit experienced when it comes to sushi and this place is decent but there fish is not that great. I ordered 3 rolls and 2 appetizers between 2 people and I was still a bit hungry after that which was odd. The rolls were alright but the sauces that they slathered them with were awful, why would you dump wasabi mayonnaise on top instead of put a bit inside? I wouldn't go here if you're looking for great sushi but if you want something close and moderate than it's a decent place to go. I've been to Shogun a few times and have always had a good experience. They have great food, a great staff, and a decor. I have not had a bad sushi roll at Shogun. The one issue I have had at other Japanese establishments is the appetizer and main course coming out at the same time. I never had this issue at Shogun. They know how to stagger the dishes. The spicy rock shrimp is a great appetizer to start with. The last time I was there, I tried a roll I never had - the Hawaii roll. It's a simple roll. The roll is stuffed with either tuna or salmon and avocado, and has wasabi mayo and a sweet chili sauce on it. It was a very delicoius roll. My go-to main course here is the Japanse curry with chicken. Whenever I go to a Japanese restaurant and see curry on the menu, I tend to order it because it's something you don't see often, and I love Japanese curry. The curry here is good, but I do have one issue with it. It doesn't have to with the food, but the way they serve it. They give you a pretty large bowl of curry, and a regular side bowl of rice. The rice/curry ratio is no good. They either need to give more rice, or a little less curry (hopefully more of the former). I think I am pretty knowledgeable about curry as I've had over 20 years experience with it. Shogun is a great Japanese restaurant in the capital district. If you are in the area and you crave Japanese food, check this place out. If you have never had Japanese curry, give it a try. The curry is very mild and has a great taste. read more
