I am a native Burqueno and, I have been living near the Nob Hill area for the past 10 years or so. Not to mention I frequent most of the eateries in the area! I have to admit I barely made my first visit to Shogun not too long ago. I love sushi, so I have no excuse as to why it has take me so long to try it. My boyfriend actually picked it for a Friday night dinner. The place is small, but super cute with the island that the sushi chefs are all secluded in, catering to our sushi needs. They're surrounded by a moat of sushi boats! I loved it! Obviously, large rolls and things don't sit atop the boats. They did send our pickled ginger and wasabi on it, along with my order of salmon sashimi! I was thrilled! My salmon was also very prettily shaped into a flower. They were winning with me, that's for sure. I don't normally stray from the classic sort of rolls, but I saw their Flaming Crunch Roll on the menu and had to have it. I am obsessed with Flaming Hot Cheetos and I thought what better way to combine two foods I love. Why not, when in Rome right? It hit the spot for me. I really enjoyed myself here. It may seem like a fairly simple and possibly corny set up with the stream of sushi boats, but I found it to be quite entertaining! It's so cool to watch everyone's sushi being made and it going out knowing the little boats. This was also the first time I got to try uni and it was the best sushi I have ever had to this day! Absolutely amazing sushi. It's a small restaurant with a general table seating area on one side and a sushi bar conveyor belt style on the other side. The service was quick and friendly and the sushi was phenomenal. The fish was extremely fresh and flavorful and it is one of the only places in town that has real wasabi if you ask for it. We went here to show the kids a sushi boat restaurant. They are not really operating like a normal sushi boat place though- nothing is on the boats as they go by, and you have to order off the menu. When a small plate is ready, they put it on a boat and tell you to watch out for it. When a large plate is ready, they just hand it to you over the counter. Not a real sushi boat experience. However, the sushi was good. We got an assortment of rolls and some nigiri, and all were good. The Beef Gyoza were also very tasty. Not cheap, but overall an enjoyable dinner. read more

Worst sushi in Albuquerque. I'm not one to complain usually but i had to this time in hopes that the restaurant might improve (doubtful). Sushi smelled fishy #1, rolls were loose and even found a hair in the rainbow roll. Didn't even eat the rest of our order. I think the worst part was coming out of the restaurant with some other guests and they realized they had their car towed while parked behind the restaurant in the designated Shogun parking. We went to o Shogun last night after not having been there for a year. We were warmly welcomed by a lovely woman in a kimono. We ordered two rolls and a tuna salad. The rolls were not rolled tightly and not all were cut through so when you took one piece, it unrolled the next piece. It tasted good but it fell apart before you could get it into your mouth. It was sloppy! The lovely woman didn't understand the concept of the roll not being rolled tightly... she focused on the sticky rice being sticky. I miss Sushi from the Bay Area. I can't lie, but this place was fantastic. I highly recommend the sushi. The rice is fresh, which is a huge plus. Sushi boats! I had been missing sushi boats on a little conveyor belt while sitting at the sushi bar, awaiting your sushi as it comes floating to you on boats. I know it's quite cheesy of a preference, but it adds to the ambiance. The service is great and staff is very friendly. Highly recommend the NY steak roll. It's a great take of Surf and Turf with a delightful addition of jalapeño for a slight bit of heat. The monkey ball was wonderful and I really enjoyed the green mussels. Prices are very affordable and you get a good amount of food. I will definitely return. I recommend you go early. They open at 5pm, so be there if you want to find parking behind the restaurant or nearby and the restaurant fills up FAST. read more

This place has boats. Little boats that go around the chefs and deliver your sushi. Now it only delivers sushi if it's not too heavy. Most sushi rolls will not come by boat. The sushi is very good. I found the sashimi to be fresh and good size portions. The sushi rolls were also very good. One criticism is that they tend to make everything spicy. Now I like hot and spicy just as much as anyone but I found it a little counterintuitive to sushi where you want to actually taste the fish. Their non-spicy sushi rolls were very good. Stopped by here for a little dinner date with my partner. I believe this is the only restaurant in Albuquerque that has a "conveyor belt" type of sushi place. I am not certain about that, so don't take my word for it. They have little boats that are on water that go around the bar. We got an appetizer that was like popcorn chicken. When we got it, it was frozen on the inside! We told our waitress who was very apologetic about it and made sure that it wasn't. She brought it back and it was cooked fine, awesome! The sushi that we got were delicious. The person who was making the sushi explained which plate was what and had put them on the boat. We could barely hear him and he seemed so annoyed when we asked him to repeat himself. He didn't seem happy at all that we didn't get our plates right away. I checked in to Yelp and they had a free non alcoholic beverage coupon but the waitress told us that they haven't been using that for a long time now. She validated it for us anyways since there was the incident with the appetizer. Overall, the place is good but the sushi isn't the best in the town, in my opinion. read more

Man, things have gone down hill a lot since covid. I used to love this place. It thought it was the top tier of Japanese cuisine in the city. I came here recently for lunch (a couple weeks ago). They use the heat up minute rice for their bento boxes. The steak they served were tiny tiny pieces with tons of mushrooms. I was very disappointed with my recent trip.
