I kinda made a little tradition of going to teppanyaki places when my kids were little to celebrate the end of the school year or promotions. The food is generally decent, but I don't go so much for the food, as I like the concept of a dinner and show for our celebration. So when my youngest had his 8th grade promotion, I found Shogun in La Verne that I made reservations for. I've been to the Pasadena location several times in the past so I am confident with their food and service. The La Verne location is in a big shopping plaza with plenty of parking. We arrived and were seated immediately. I guess our reservation time at 6:00 pm was early enough to avoid the crowds since there was hardly anyone there yet. FYI, there's a happy hour from 3:00 - 6:00 pm. Our server was great, he got us everything we needed and stopped by frequently to check on us. We each ordered a combo, and was so excited to see the "show". I don't know if our chef was new or what, but he was so soft spoken and not very enthusiastic about what he was doing. I couldn't hear anything he was saying and even the train whistle that he blew was so quiet. I clapped and cheered in the beginning to get him going, but he wasn't really engaging, so I was really disappointed. It was so boring. To top that off, our "yakisoba" that came with our meal was linguini noodles. Seriously? Can you get any less authentic? If Panda Express can get Chow Mein noodles in Alaska, you can get yakisoba noodles in SoCal. read more

We've been coming to this shogun for 20 + years celebrating birthdays and ordering to go sushi rolls 1- 2 times a month for my daughter. Tonight we came to celebrate her birthday and brought a cake. I know they provide a small piece of sponge cake with whip cream to sing the birthday song , but we brought a cake for that . We wanted to use our cake to light candles on and sing her birthday song to her. They used to bring our cakes out with a few candles and sing the birthday song. We were a Party of 5 at teppanyaki . It was terrible !!! Had I known it was under new ownership/management with changed menu, I would've made reservations elsewhere. Let me start with the poor quality of small steaks that were under seasoned , and my colossal shrimp was undercooked and raw ! Although the manager replaced the shrimp that was cooked , and made it right. And they changed veggies and added potatoes and broccoli and pasta noodles on the side that was bland and tasteless ! Big disappointment! Whose bright idea was to screw up the menu ! My friend ordered the filet with chicken . The filet was thinner than my poor quality New York steak! My daughter ordered the tofu delight with miso sauce. And the chef added terriyaki instead of miso sauce. I'm sad to say we will not be coming back here anymore . We will look for another sushi place to go to . I'm sure they'll be a lot of us long term clientele that will not be returning to our old favorite shogun . What a treat! Came here for friend's son's bday. I've been to a hibachi but never like this. Menu is huge. Something for everyone. Many got the ribeye. One person got the lemon pepper chicken. I got the teriyaki steak. The fried rice was fantastic and they make a great miso soup. Really good quality meat and veggies. Generous portions. Chefs are fun and very talented. Came here with my mother and boyfriend for the first time in yearssss-- we used to celebrate our birthdays here. We had a horrible experience this most recent time. Who would have ever thought an Asian man would call a Mexican woman a "weak white girl" for refusing your chili. Insane! I couldn't believe the words that came out of his mouth. Then, he didn't cook our steak to temp, it was cold to the touch and blue. He laughed at us when he noticed none of us were eating the steak he placed on our plates. When the table closed and the clean up crew came to grab our uneaten plates, they didn't even care about how we didn't enjoy our meals. I would not recommend this place. Horrible spirits cooking food is never good. Just junky's here. read more

Enjoyed our lunch here today. The staff continue to be attentive and professional. The portions are generous. You have to choose between soup or salad for the combos. I especially appreciated the grilled vegetables that accompany the lunch entrees and combos (mushrooms, onions, zucchini, bell peppers). Good food and a good time. I'm a sucker for hibachi and this is my favorite place for it. They're awesome at taking special requests and accommodating people with food allergies (shellfish allergy for me ). Chefs always make it fun and the servers are so nice. It gets very busy on the weekends especially at dinner time so make reservations in advance. This is one of our go-to places for bday celebrations with the family. Such a fun spot. The service we received on June 20th was the best. The cook, Erik was great! and waiter she was extremely nice. They both provided overall awesome service, to where when I return I would like to request them always. The food was great. No matter what we asked of them it was delivered,no questions asked.The cook was so friendly, funny we had a ball despite we were a little down because of loss of a family member that wasn't present for Father's Day this year. The reason for my four star instead of five no reflection on the waiter or the cook, it was simply due to having to constantly shu away annoying flying bugs. But they said they have only 1 size and could not change it. They should ask me before ordering . I do not like their behavior they did charge it anyway. I hadn't been to shogun in a very very long time and I realized what I was missing for so long. I will never go to Benihana after this experience. Everything was amazing from the front hostesses to the seating and immediate service from waitress. The restaurant was very clean and organized with an elaborate menu. The manager came by and made sure everything was good with our experience. The chef was prompt in coming to our table after we ordered our entrees. Constant waitress interaction and asking if we needed anything. The chef was very clean and organized in his cooking. Everything was amazing. We had such a great experience at Shogun and I definitely wanted to leave a review! From the moment we sat down, everything was smooth, fun, and well-paced. What really made the lunch stand out though was our waitress, Alysa. She was attentive without being overbearing, super friendly, and made sure we had everything we needed the entire time. Drinks were always refilled, orders were spot on, and she kept everything running seamlessly. You can tell she genuinely cares about giving great service. I have been going to shogun since I was a child. I had my first drink at 21 here and I got engaged here at 22. I'm still married now at 55. I went last year and thought it was bad but I went on 12/24/25 and it was Horrible the food the service the parking the prices just everything. After a 1.5 hours we had to go tell a manager no cook had come to our table the 2 table next to us sat after us but had there cooks after a hour. The food was not fresh the cook didn't season it the portion sizes were small the fried rice was awful the chicken was chewy. But the prices are higher. That was my last visit. read more

I've been coming to shogun for at least 20 years now and our last two visits (12/31/25, 1/30/26) have been disappointing in terms of the food quality. The new additions to the appetizers is quite odd, they've added "yakisoba" which is just sweet soy sauce butter noodles. They also added potato's and broccoli to the veggies, the broccoli isn't so odd but why would they add red baby potatoes to a Japanese vegetable stir fry? The quality of the protein in the main entrees was so disappointing the shrimp are small, the steaks are super thin and low quality. We even splurged and ordered the "wagyu" entrees on New Year's Eve and it by no means tasted like wagyu quality. Me and my husband ordered different cuts of steak and the same looking thin steak was cooked for us. The service both times was mediocre, nothing special to call out. Probably won't be coming here again and be looking for other hibachi options. read more

We have visited many times - sometimes at a table just for sushi, but most often we visit for teppanyaki. There are several choices in the area, but Shogun is our favorite! The food is consistently fresh and delicious, the sushi options are fantastic, the alcoholic drinks are strong and tasty, and service is always incredible. I can see how some people may like it but the quality of everything was pretty subpar for me. Service: they're all nice! Really didn't encounter any problems and they were very attentive. The stars are really for them to be honest. Parking: easy, plaza parking with lots of parking, might get a little busy on weekends Ambience: pretty standard Asian restaurant that looks like they cater more towards non-Asian demographics. I've been coming to Shogun ever since I was a kid and I feel like their standards have never changed. I've always experienced top notch service with great food and I can say that is exactly what we got today for my brother's birthday. Today we received Jerry as our chef and he was just amazing! He was super kind and cool talking with my family. It was awesome to hear his backstory on how he made his way into his cooking career and how much he loves his job. Even after many years, it's still very fun to see the tricks that every chef does and the fun jokes they put into making our food. I ordered the filet mignon combination with the samurai shrimp and I also ordered the sashimi assortment appetizer. I definitely recommend the combination meals as they also come with a soup, salad, and your choice of fried or white rice. So although it may seem pricey, it's definitely worth your buck! Although I said I would never return to Shōgun in La Verne, my friends wanted to have lunch there. So I gave it another chance. It was almost empty at the time that we arrived, which was great. The menu has changed in that they do not grill bean sprouts with the main meal anymore. Instead they serve a very tasteless spaghetti pasta. Our shrimp and chicken lacked spices and flavor and some vegetables seemed to be missing on the grill. We were unhappy about our disappointing meal. I miss the exciting flavorful meals served at Shōgun. Time to find another great Japanese restaurant. read more

I am writing this review from my heart & soul. We have been customers for over 20 years. We were there with Bruce for many years at all his locations we seen all Mgrs come & go Jason Nixon, Kai etc. We were sad to see Bruce leave. Last night was the most disappointing dining experience of our lives with Shogun. I am not sure what genius decide to serve us in a bento box !!! Ridiculous for the server to carry but for our dining experience, rose potatoes in the side of veggies ? I see that ingredient in a pot roast oven dish. The noodles are useless, they should be an optional item, what a waste. Sushi menu ??? Where did it go ? Not to mention the plastic menus that you can't even keep open. The menu is busy, cheap looking and overwhelming. Whoever the new owners are need to listen to their employees and long term customers. Lastly, the prices are outrageous, we used to go every Friday , now maybe once a month or every 2 - 3 months. If it's not broken don't try to fix it. The onion soup was back to the Bruce recipe, thank you , the Happy Hour was a good idea. Other than that ... remember your in La Verne not Beverly Hills. We are a suburban hometown folk. If you keep shattering the heart and soul of the Shogun we all have known, you will lose your regular, loyal clientele. Remember when business is down.. you can count on your regulars. This was my first visit to Shogun. I must say the food was delicious!! There was a big variety of veggies... zucchini, onion, broccoli, potatoes, mushrooms and bell peppers. Really used to like this place but had quite the experience last time I was there. I watched a busboy spray down a teppan table with a chemical cleaner while he left the soy sauce bottle and the salt and pepper shakers right on the table to absorb all the mist of the spray. He literally could have extended his arm and removed them but he was so lazy he just left them on the table and sprayed them with the table. Tall skinny guy with slick back hair. I didn't use the soy sauce on my table after I saw that. Foul. Also they charged me and my wife and daughter $4.50 for our cups of green tea. Literally a bag of green tea and like 10 oz of hot water! My wife wanted to send it back but I told her we should have looked at the price first. Not even a pot of tea! So that was like 15 bucks for the 3 cups and no refills? Crazy. read more

After over 20 years of being loyal, weekly customers, this is a really disappointing review to have to write. Shogun Japanese Tap & Grill used to be one of our absolute favorite spots. Unfortunately, under the new management, it feels like a completely different restaurant and not in a good way. The menu has been changed significantly, and several of our go-to sushi rolls have been removed. These weren't just random items they were our favorite for us for years. What's even more frustrating is the lack of flexibility. In the past, the chefs were always accommodating and happy to make simple adjustments. Now, we're told they "can't do that anymore," which is disappointing and honestly surprising for a place that used to pride itself on customer experience. We also noticed it wasn't nearly as busy as it used to be, which is concerning but not entirely surprising given the changes. The one bright spot continues to be the bar team and service staff. The bartenders and servers are fantastic friendly, hardworking, and doing their best to keep things running smoothly despite the changes. They've always been a big part of why we loved coming here, and that hasn't changed! That said, as longtime locals and loyal customers, this shift has been really disappointing. If things don't improve or there isn't some flexibility brought back whether that's reintroducing popular rolls or allowing reasonable accommodations we may have to start looking for alternative places to enjoy our favorite sushi. We truly hope management takes this feedback seriously, because it would be a shame to lose what made this place special for so many years! read more

My co worker wanted to come here for her birthday and I haven't been to a Shogun for over 10 years. I called to ensure we have reservations for a party of 7. They said we can't be seated till all of our parties are here and can do separate checks. This location has tons of parking spaces and inside looked really nice and clean. The server was very friendly and attentive. I ordered the New York Steak well done with rice being upgraded to chicken fried rice, mixed vegetables, and salad. The chef cooks it on the spot so you get to be entertained while waiting for the food being made. The food end up being delicious! I am watching my carbs, but the chicken fried rice was so good that I finished my bowl. The New York steak was good, but needs a little more seasoning. They had some sauces there, but it was bland to me. I would come here again to try other dishes. It is a bit pricier. The birthday girl did get a free cake/ice cream and they sang to her too.
