After over 20 years of being loyal, weekly customers, this is a really disappointing review to have to write. Shogun Japanese Tap & Grill used to be one of our absolute favorite spots. Unfortunately, under the new management, it feels like a completely different restaurant and not in a good way. The menu has been changed significantly, and several of our go-to sushi rolls have been removed. These weren't just random items they were our favorite for us for years. What's even more frustrating is the lack of flexibility. In the past, the chefs were always accommodating and happy to make simple adjustments. Now, we're told they "can't do that anymore," which is disappointing and honestly surprising for a place that used to pride itself on customer experience. We also noticed it wasn't nearly as busy as it used to be, which is concerning but not entirely surprising given the changes. The one bright spot continues to be the bar team and service staff. The bartenders and servers are fantastic friendly, hardworking, and doing their best to keep things running smoothly despite the changes. They've always been a big part of why we loved coming here, and that hasn't changed! That said, as longtime locals and loyal customers, this shift has been really disappointing. If things don't improve or there isn't some flexibility brought back whether that's reintroducing popular rolls or allowing reasonable accommodations we may have to start looking for alternative places to enjoy our favorite sushi. We truly hope management takes this feedback seriously, because it would be a shame to lose what made this place special for so many years! read more

As a vegan, I always appreciate places that accommodate me because I tag along with my non-vegan family. The server was very kind and assured me what was and was not vegan. The three stars are for her. Sadly, our chef was so odd towards me from the beginning. He asked if butter would be okay for the veggies and I said no. I was surprised because not even vegetarians eat butter. But maybe he didn't know. He proceeded to give me the cold shoulder the whole time. And he complained the other party about how inconvenient having a vegan is. I have never felt as unwelcomed at a dining establishment as I did here. Weird behavior. Do not come here if you have allergies or if you're celiac. Our recent visit was disappointing as a celiac person. The waiter did ask if there were any allergies and that was a plus. However, none of the rolls could be modified for my needs and was told that the only thing that was gluten free would be sashimi. read more

Had a new waitress, claimed she only had one table, us, Understandable i suppose for a not so busy night. She was not attentive whatsoever, no sauces brought to our table, no refills on drinks, wine etc.... food was brought to our table cold. All around bad experience. The food is always a hit. For first timers it's a great show but after being there more than a few times, it's the personal connection with the cook. Jose was funny and let us play our own music. Service was quick with our other request for sushi and drinks. I like going here after a graduation or birthday since there is plenty of seats or a room is available for larger numbers of guests in your party. read more

This is our go to place for birthdays and other celebrations. We (party of 7) were there on a Saturday evening. Seated promptly. We feel 5 stars for the Teppan chef and food. We ordered 6 dinner combos (1 to go) 1 child's dinner and 4 appetizers. Service started out well - Drink and food orders taken right away. The lack of service occurred when the appetizers were dropped off - most of them were to share with the table. We were not given any small plates and had to use our dinner plates. Couldn't mix any Wasabi and soy for the sashimi. The tempura was passed around, we had to dip the tempura in the sauce and pass it. It was hot so some of us used our dinner plate. Flagged down a server to ask for more water, chopsticks and 1 plate, flaged another server for more chopsticks, napkins and a glass. Imo appetizers should have a small plate so you can share. If I'm in a hurry and want something tasty without sitting at the communal tables, I always go for the New York New York Roll--it's consistently fresh and hits the spot every time. For special occasions, I really enjoy their hibachi-style dining. It's fun, flavorful, and always a crowd-pleaser. The fried rice in particular is absolutely amazing--some of the best I've had. It's also become a bit of a tradition for me to go to Shogun on Christmas. It's one of the few places open, and it never disappoints. So this place is great! I had a coworker who used to mention it a lot and I just hard to try it when I lived in the area. It's a cheaper Benihana and it's actually quite delicious! I've been here and to the one in Pasadena on many occasions and it never disappoints. The service is always great! If you choose the grill seating option you get seated with a couple of other people. You get to choose which meat option you would like and the chef grills it in front of you. Miso soup, veggies, salad and fried rice all come with it as well. The food was really good, everything was seasoned really well and portions were perfect. The only issues we had were that everything felt super rushed. Went here for husband's birthday. Had a reservation. We had the worst dining experience! Service was poor from the start. We watched other parties walk in and be seated right away. After inquiring, we were rudely told they had called us five times. We were sitting where they had told us to wait. Service was poor from the start - water, which was all we were ordering to drink, was not brought until we finished soup and salad, and we had to ask for it. The food quality was worse. The vegetables were undercooked (some still half raw) and everything was extremely oily to the point of sitting in grease. We asked for no noodles as the last time here we had found them to be oily and had no flavor. The steak had no flavor. The chef left big globs of fat on it. The fried rice was not properly prepared - it was mushy, clumped together, and also overly oily. On top of that, our check was incorrect, as some items for party sitting at the same table as us were on our check. I asked the chef politely to cut my steak in smaller pieces. When I asked again for smaller pieces, he made a rude comment and negative look and did not do it, which was unprofessional and uncomfortable. Today we decided to go for something totally different. I've been here before but many years ago and no report. So we ventured to a place called Shogun, La Verne. This location is in the very back on a small mini mall. The parking is limited but at the time we went we found some with no problem. Not many handicaps stalls and they share it with the rehab center next door. As we walked in there were two girls to meet us at the front door, very nice with smiles !! As we were seated we noticed it wasn't really busy other nights it's packed. The background music was low enough to talk across the table, that's very important.. Tables and chairs and booths were nice and clean. Not sure on how many this location can handle but they have A LOT OF ROOM !! A big party from the back room was there and it seems like there were more rooms available for bigger parties. Three chefs were working this day. The menu we're giving out by our server Enrique. Several pages and combinations to choose from. A full bar that served hard alcohol drinks, beer, wines and soft drinks too. The few lunch combos for decent prices, a lot to choose from. As Enrique took our order, we had some time before everything arrived. Our drinks were first, made perfectly and next our appetizers. Very hot and looking very good. Not long after our food was delivered. Very tasty with heat from the grill. Our main lunch was here in no time. Very tasty and nice and hot. I finally tried Shogun, which is down the street from my house. I went for a family birthday celebration and now was it packed. We had a 7pm reservation and we did not get seated until almost 8pm. My review was going to reflect this but, they put us in a private room and well let's say that made up for the wait time. The waiter Hendry was awesome and out cook Willy did a great job! The food was cooked in front of us and was delicious! We had a great time, the service and food were amazing. Sushi was fresh and melted in my mouth just the way it supposed to. I decided to treat Shogun this evening. We used to go there often before COVID. This is our first time since COVID. We informed our server that we are on a low sodium diet and I'm allergic to tomatoes. The salad came out exactly how I ordered it. I ordered the tofu delight no sauce. Just pan fried. Our server even told our cook that we didn't want sauce and salt on our food. Our cook asked what sauce I wanted. I said none. Just plain. Yet he added salt and pepper to my tofu. I told him I don't want any salt. He then went salt my tofu again. I didn't want to make a scene because I was with two other families at the table. I ate only half of the tofu. It was very salty.
