Indeed, 3.8 . We went to visit our friend who lives in a retirement village near the place. It was the Holiday. I don't know it was early and just one cooker, they attended a family on the grill table, after he made our sushis. We waited a little longer. This was the place to go. In Chino Hills and after they closed it we followed to La Verne. The restaurant lost it appeal, carpet looks like it hasn't been clean in 6 months, grills need a detail, bathroom needs to be tidy more often, staff attitude needs to be adjusted and food has gone mid. Prices have gone up, but now they short you on quality and presentation. If you go at night, even the lighting outside is poor. Looks like you can get mugged it's so dark. The sushi wasn't as tasty as I had hoped (but to be fair I ordered vegan and there aren't many options only Avocado or cucumber roll and vegetable roll) the inari roll however, (which is made of sweet soybean paste) was made exceptionally by Happy. DO NOT GO HERE!!! This place deserves zero stars but it's not an option. This place has so many problems. First of all, we went for lunch at 12 noon and we filled up the only table that had customers . All other tables were empty. One of our table mates understandably had a complaint about her sushi. It did not look appetizing at all and she said the eel sauce had a nasty flavor. When she politely asked for a California roll instead she was told no. "You ordered it, you pay for it. It's not our fault you don't like it." That really killed the vibe for the whole table. Additionally, the cook provided no entertainment. No onion volcano, no beating heart fried rice and not one smile. He did not provide the two sauces that are usually offered, especially since we ordered both shrimp and filet mignon. When we asked for them, he acted like he didn't know which sauces we were talking about. He finally figured it out with the help of a different table mate. At other Teppanyaki style restaurants, they give them to you at the beginning of the meal. Apparently, they are called Yum Yum sauce and Ginger sauce. I never previously needed to ask for them at all, certainly not by name. The chicken fried rice ($3.99 up charge) was not made with fresh chicken and onions, but a pre made ground chicken mixture of some kind. It was bland. The vegetables I received were mostly onion with very little zucchini or carrots because the cook did not try hard enough to give a good mixture of vegetables to each person at the table. The filet mignon was tasty and so was the shrimp. It was the bright spot of the whole meal. The lunch special on the menu lists a soup or salad option. But the woman who waited on us said it comes with soup which was a mushroom soup with little flavor, not the typical miso. On our way out, the woman who waited on us made snide remarks, shook her head at us. I told her to stop being so rude, she told us to get out. We waited for our table mates. Apparently, they were also told to get out of the restaurant. After reading previous reviews, this is a common behavior of the staff at the restaurant. The business at this place is dwindling. They have few customers. Most likely, they will be out of business soon. Please go to Shogun instead. It's right down the street and there is a reason why they have a wait to be served while this poorly run restaurant is empty during the lunch hour. I hadn't been to this restaurant since before Covid. This is nothing by like I remembered and was a waste of $75. Not a good experience for my friend's birthday lunch. My wife and I decided to stop here on the fly for some sushi. When we walked in the door, there was this musty odor that just threw us off from the start. We were the only two people other than the woman (waiter) and the man (chef). We sat down at the sushi bar and just we were astonished how empty and desolate this place looked. When we refused the roll, he got upset and was angry we wouldn't pay for something we didn't order. He was very rude so we decided not to tip. Went here on a Saturday evening and noone was there eating. So disappointed we took my grandsons girlfriend who is from El Salvador and had never been to a tapping grill. You pay this price for the entertainment and there was none. No rice beating heart, volcano onion or anything. Also they no longer do garlic butter either. Food was ok not very flavorful as it used to be. Salad was way smaller as was the soup that is made using plain water and 2 tiny pieces of mushroom plus a pinch of onion. It was completely tasteless. Their bathrooms stunk and were dirty. This place i think is about to go under. No people the day before Fathers Day even? Maybe it's how expensive they are out ticket was over $450. I came in here for lunch with a friend on a Monday and we received amazing service. The restaurant was empty but likely because of the day and time of day but to say we enjoyed having the place to ourselves is an understatement. We shared the pepper salmon sashimi, and ordered scallop and filet mignon teppanyaki lunches. The food was cooked to perfection and the filet was incredibly tender and tasty. No need to go to the big chain teppanyaki places because Wabi Sabi is doing it better. The salmon sashimi was so fresh and tasty despite not coming in with the intention of getting sushi, now I know where to go when I'm craving it. I have never had such poor quality fish in my life. I told the sushi chef that I did not like it and they would not even give me a discount even though I barely ate the food. Awkward! The whole night here was soooo awkward! We were never told that they don't do the live cooking shows. They sat us down, took our order and my husband noticed that they were cooking behind us. Had we known they wouldn't cook in front of us, we wouldn't have eaten here. Why did they stop cooking at the table? Because Covid. However they have no problem sitting people from different parties at the same table. That makes no sense especially when there are tables that are completely empty. Speaking of the sitting, they sat us directly across from the other party so we were either trying to avoid awkward eye contact with them the entire time or we were staring at the wall. I ordered my filet mignon rare and I know the joke how they get a cold uncooked piece of meat and act like they're going to give it to you. Then they laugh and put it on the grill. When I got my plate of food, the meat was so red and cold as if they didn't put it on the grill long enough to even get warm. I couldn't eat it but they did fix it for me. After our meal we waited about 15 minutes for the bill which isn't a long time but it can be when your back is to the restaurant and you're staring at a wall! 3 stars because the owners are hospitable and trying to make it work with the small amount of employees that they have. We were there a couple of months ago, and did notice some not so good changes... This is the honest to God's truth; it's like they raised their prices again, overnight. Returned a couple of days ago and our chef really had no personality. They really don't put on much of a show for you anymore. They really do not engage with their customers. The manager/Asian lady is not a very personable person. She does not seem happy. Which is really sad. Anyways back to our dinner ...For the 3 of us our total was about $160. NOT INCLUDING THE TIP!!!!Not worth it at all. The filet mignon is delicious and the shrimp are pretty good however, it's not worth the price that they charge now. They now charge an additional $4.99 plus tax for the fried rice and the fried rice is pretty plain they don't add much egg to it. They also charged us for hot tea which is ridiculous. Every other place does not charge you for hot tea. It's simply hot water on a cup with one teabag inside of it. They charged us an additional $4.00 plus tax for hot tea. WOW! We ordered edamame which is nothing fancy and they now charge almost $9.00 dollars for that. Needless to say we spent almost $200 for the 3 of us. The service was so very poor. My family and I went here on a Friday night. We got seated right away, but waited almost 35 minutes before our Teppan food got started. When the chef finally arrived and got started on the grill, we didn't even get a show. He started cooking right away. The food was mediocre at best. My son ordered steak with his entrée and I couldn't believe how chewy it was. The vegetables given for every entrée had more onion than any other vegetable. Unless you like overly salty food, I wouldn't recommend it here for you.
