My first time at Shogun Sushi was utterly embarrassing. I picked the All-You-Can-Eat (AYCE) option and ordered way too much sushi. To make things worse, the restaurant had a Leftover Rule which required me to pay an additional $40 ($5 per four pieces of leftover sushi) on top of the $26 AYCE fee. I was getting punished for my gluttony. And deservedly so! However, the server talked to her manager about my situation, and they both decided that I was only a hungry soul who had just come from playing three hours of volleyball, and that I had no bad intentions. Instead of paying $40 for my leftover, I was asked to pay only $20. I got to take my sizable leftover home, of course. Needless to say, I had to give the server a generous tip. Lesson learned: Don't be a glutton when it comes to AYCE! Lol. Shogun Sushi is located in Southeast Boise. I've been there a few more times after my humiliating experience and have been smarter with my choices. Most recently, I skipped AYCE and ordered pork teriyaki. It was a little bland, in my opinion. But props to them for being generous with the veggies. I am a huge fan of their baked salmon. It's my go-to sushi.  I'm giving this place four stars because while food is decent, the sushi is rice-heavy. Not a lot of seafood or meat. It's mostly rice. Staff was pretty friendly on all occasions. Restaurant is tiny. Only 10 or so tables. Bathroom was decently clean. Just a final note about Shogun Sushi's Leftover Rule. It states, "More than 3 pieces left per table will be subject to additional charge." The additional charge is $5 per four pieces of leftover sushi. Pace yourself if you're doing AYCE. Must have been an off night. Usually very good sushi and meals here. Tonight we ordered a set menu of 3 rolls and 3 appetizers to go along with a grilled teriyaki chicken plate for pick up to bring home and watch the Denver / Seattle football game. I'm a huge fan of sushi, and have eaten at almost every sushi place in Boise since I moved here two years ago, but this place keeps me coming back! The sushi speaks for itself, as the fish is as fresh as you can get in Boise. The manager and chefs are constantly challenging themselves to push the boundaries of flavor to bring the very best to your plate! So make sure you give the special a try when you get there! But the food isn't the only thing that's special about this place. The service is second to none, and I'm not just talking about speed! I was stunned as the servers and managers actually remembered me and followed up on conversations we had had a few weeks ago! But if you are more of an introvert don't let that dissuade you as it seems they are very keen at reading a table. If great service and great food doesn't tickle your fancy, rest assured the price will! The "Set Menu" is essentially all you can eat prices, but without the pressure of trying to gorge yourself "trying to get your money's worth". I like this restaurant, I only wish they had more seating. The booths were reserved for four people, so we had to sit at a table in the middle of everything and it did diminish the experience a star for me. We started with an Octopus Salad. It was very good and a nice sized portion. Our next selection was a Spider roll and eel on the side. It was fresh and well prepared. They have an option of an All You Can Eat menu, but it's not my style, so I can't speak to this. I mean A LOT of rice and not much else. it wasn't worth eating or buying. pretty disappointing. they also put the crisp rolls in the same box, as the alaskan rolls. The must tries; Saipan roll, cherry blossom roll, red dragon roll, all nigiri (trust me), salmon skin salad, seared tuna salad, cucumber salad, jalapeño poppers, gyoza and bulgogi bowl. My favorite sushi joint in Boise bar none. I have to get the AYCE bc it's just too hard to choose one or two things and impossible to stop. They also include appetizers as a part of the meal. There is also quite a wide variety of choices. I always have to start with that seared Ahi salad because it is so amazing! It is a little spicy so if you don't like spicy please know that. Their jalapeno poppers are to die for as well. And I love tempura any way I can get it, and they do it so well. They just do everything so well. As far as rolls go my favorites are the Ichiban Crystal crunch, and cherry blossom. But there are so many really really spectacular rolls here. Loved this place! There's a lot of sushi out there and I live in the Seattle area so there are a lot of options here. Who knew there would be a place better than the majority of the places we have here in Boise? I was driving back from UT and I was talking on the phone with one of my eating buddies as I drove through ID. I mentioned that I was jonesing for some sushi after a week in UT and WY. He is a guy who travels a lot for business and he immediately told me to try this place. I went in with marginal expectations. I have a place I love at home and no one anywhere has ever come close to it. This place nailed it. The prices were reasonable for sushi and the food was fresh and delicious. I loved the garlic shrimp roll and kind of want one right now. I tried a bunch of different items and they were all awesome. I particularly enjoyed the cheesy corn, which seemed very out of place at a sushi bar but was so good that I didn't spend much time thinking about whether or not it belonged on the menu. Came here recently to try it and out and all three of us really enjoyed our meal. We went for an early dinner to avoid the crowds and paid dinner price for the all you can eat sushi. It was around $25 and well worth it. As for the restaurant in itself, it was a bit "cozy" but very clean. We were helped by a very nice waitress who attended to our every need. She was very attentive and provide excellent service. In one of the reviews, they mention the seared tuna salad and how they could eat that daily. I would have to agree. Only on the dinner all you can eat option can you have the seared ahi salad. It was excellent. It had a great salad dressing and the tuna was very fresh. The sushi was very well done as well including fresh fish and creative combos. Their all you can eat also included appetizers which were really good. All in all, I would definitely come back. I do have to mention that the seared ahi salad makes this review lean towards excellence. Since it is not included in the all you can eat lunch, I probably would only come back to pay their dinner prices so that I could indulge on their salad. My new favorite sushi place in Boise. They do nigri right! Lots of fish that covers all of the rice. My last favorite place started over filling and use the rice as a stuffer and less fish. I sat at the bar and it was a pleasant experience. The sushi chefs are great. The saki was also very good and I tried some I have never had before. Rolls were great and they have an all you can eat special. It is a bit far out from where I live but wayyyyy worth it. Best Sushi in the Treasure Valley, family owned and operated. The staff is friendly and the food is amazing. The family is from Saipan and Korea, they are some of the kindest people you will meet.
