Had a very positive experience here and did the AYCE dinner option. Definitely a smaller place but we went at more of an off time. When I do AYCE sushi I have a little different expectations compared to when I go to a place for a few rolls. They had a good variety of options, were quick with the producing of food, and food was very good. I liked the different appetizer options. We just did the ahí salad, gyoza, and egg rolls and all were tasty. The ahí salad was especially good! I liked the baked roll variation which I haven't seen before. Im terrible with the names and it looks like their menu on yelp is slightly different than what we had but the rolls we had were all tasty. The "sublime" was my favorite. They tell you upfront that you basically order in rounds...after first round you can't order another round until you eat what you ordered from the first round. Shogun has a busy, big city sushi place vibe to it. The servers are all professional and accommodating despite the consistently full tables. Their garlic aoili sauce is unique and unlike the straight up, overused spicy mayo and eel sauce combo most places deploy. The seafood here is consistently fresh and for what you get, the dinner AYCE is a deal. You not only have their great maki options, but you have several side dishes to mix things up among the sushi. It's disappointing that the current menu is short a few options they had a year ago, but I'm happy to report that the sides aren't throw aways, they taste better than most a la carte places. The sushi was a little thin and the rolls were mostly rice. The tempura was is pre-made and frozen, not crispy/crunchy. But I didn't come for the Japanese food. When I heard they did Korean also, I came the very next day. It wasn't much of a selection but was good. The Gaibi was pretty tasty but did not seem like it was made to order. To be fair, I've eaten most of my sushi in LA and Portland so I've been spoiled with very good experiences. After reading reviews on YELP I decided to try this place for the AYCE lunch. Restaurant was pleasant enough and the service was excellent. I did not even look at the regular menu so this review is only based on the All you can eat lunch menu. There were plenty of appetizers to choose from but I came to eat sushi so I went directly to the main menu choices. The nigiri was all quite good. I would stick with just this next time. Although it first appears as though there a ton of choices in terms of the rolls, upon closer examination, you will find that almost every roll contains either Tempura Shrimp, Imitation Crab or Cream Cheese or a combination of these three ingrediants. I was slightly disappointed in the lack of variety and imagination by the chefs selections.I felt they could have done a much better job in creating a more diversified selection of rolls. read more

Hadn't been here for a while, but decided to visit it again. First off, I was disappointed that it is no longer all you can eat and instead doing a combination meal with three different options. For about $28 per person (2people) we had 16 pieces nigiri sushi, and 6 sushi rolls, and it also came with a cup of miso soup-you can opt for all sushi rolls and get 4 rolls, or you can get 3 appetizers instead of one roll. For me, it was enough food but my friend could have eaten more. The sushi came out in a timely fashion and the service was great as our waters were frequently filled and ginger and wasabi topped off. The sushi was fresh and flavorful, but their menu could use an update with new rolls, and the portion of fish in each roll seems like less than that at other sushi restaurants. Still a good value for the amount of food and rolls are full of flavor. read more

I went in for lunch. I was especially interested in their sushi and Bento lunch after reading all the reviews. I wish I could have both but I was there by myself, I have only limited space in my tummy to try one thing, so I tried lunch sushi AYCE this time. This little restaurant was packed with people during lunch hour, but I find a shot at the sushi bar. They have lots of options on their AYCE sushi menu. They basic deliver whatever you order until you are done. I honestly wanted to try the rolls, but knowing 1 or 2 rolls may full me up quickly, I decided to go for the appetizers, nigiris and hand rolls. As for appetizers, I ordered shrimp tempura, seaweed salad which were great. I also had cucumber salad which had chopped shrimp and imitation crab meat in it, and it was surprisingly good. Nigiri sushi itself was alright. The rice is cooked perfectly however the rice was not mixed with sushi vinegar to give sushi rice the stickiness and the flavor. The sashimi was great and thinly sliced, looks great when sitting on to of the rice ball which is not to big. That's actually great. Many sushi places have huge rice balls and you will be stuffed after 3 pieces. The rice ball was tightly shaped but no rice was smashed (I think I can give a short lessons on how to tell if the sushi chef is good. Ha ha), that means the chef did a great job. However, there is no wasabi in between the sashimi and the rice ball (some chefs add a tad bit of wasabi to add some flavors), and because the rice was not seasoned with sushi vinegar, thus the nigiri tasted pretty plain. I also tried a hand roll (sorry I forgot the name of it). Because it has some sauce /dressing so it tasted very good. Wait staff is very attentive. Always stopped by when I was about to order more. As busy as they were, my food came quickly and nicely. A bit disappointed with the sushi rice and no tamago nigiri (sweet egg) included in AYCE lunch (only available at dinner AYCE). Tamago is my favorite. So 4 stars it is. As for the price, I think $17.99 for AYCE lunch may be a bit more, but it is not too bad. I will go back and try their Pork katsu don Bento next time. Also it seems to be a Japanese/Korean restaurant, and the owners seem to be Korean, I may also try some of their Korean dish in the future. read more

Wow! What a hidden gem! My husband and I love sushi and we frequent one located downtown. However, we happen to be around the area and hungry! Behold an AYCE sushi!!!! We were pretty ecstatic! We didn't even anticipate the packed place early dinner (we even thought we were playing smart going in early trying to beat the dinner rush). I ordered the Bulgogi bowl, which comes with miso soup for $8.99. The food came out very quickly and I tore in. The miso and the bulgogi bowl were very good, but the bulgogi was a little too sweet. Shogun Sushi needs a bigger location, as by the time I left there was a line forming outside waiting to get in for the all-you-can-eat sushi. The food was really good and we really enjoyed ourselves. There was nice Island reggae music playing as well which was nice! My girlfriends picked up my tab since my birthday was in January. One thing which I was hugely disappointed at was towards the end of our meal, I asked for the menu to order a separate togo order for my husband and daughter who was at home. I order 3 items and when I received the bill, there was a 18% gratuity. I questioned the waitress about the gratuity and she said it was apart of our table. This one sort of advertises an all-you-can-eat deal, but doesn't seem to push it heavily once inside. Décor is very cool, definitely a nice comfy place to spend time. It has a lot of Korean dishes on the perhaps overly extensive menu, but oddly no fusion of flavors with the sushi rolls. Rolls are mostly fusion style, though, which is a pity as they have some talent in their sushi chefs. Crystal roll was a bust, but taking a chance, I also went for some nigiri, which was quite good. I should have just stuck with that. On the less good side, the Korean dish I had was acceptable, but nothing worth ordering again. Part of that was a server issue, but flavoring was somewhat off on the spicy pork. Vegetables were the better part of that, which should not be on a meat dish. Green tea is also a bit weak. Despite the miscues, service was overall on the strong side. This is more of a 3 going on 4, but I definitely need to try more dishes there, particularly on the sushi side. read more

I have been a frequent partaker of this restaurant over the last 2 yrs, but today was my last visit. Either they have an issue with black or disabled people or they have hired some rude employees. I met my sister for lunch today. I was a little early and grabbed the last booth because I brought my little one with me. A waitress swung by and dropped off two menus... and then kind of never came back. I had to wave her over and asked for a highchair and ordered a water and a coke. They brought the drinks just as my sister showed up with her boyfriend. He doesn't like sushi (just wanted to see the babe), so she and I order some rolls. The waitress starts to put our order in, stops halfway back to the cooks, comes back and asks of we're aware of the charge on extra food. I say we are and we'll be fine. They bring our food. We eat. The whole time we're eating, we're being watched. Not the smiling-checking-if-you-need-something watched, but the are-they-about-to-do-something-illegal watched. It starts to make me uncomfortable. My sister's boyfriend asks me if they have a problem with disabled people, since he's in a wheelchair and thinks it might be him. I tell him to give them the benefit of the doubt and it's probably not him. My sister orders two more rolls. I go to the bathroom and ask her to request our check. I come out and she tells me they said they can't bring our check until there's less than 3 pieces of sushi on her plate. I wait for her to have less than the three and ask for our check. The lady brings two over, saying, "you wanted two right?" I say, "No, one please," and hand over my card. She makes a face, chats with the other waitress and brings my bill back. I asked her if she has a problem or something with us, because we've been getting attitude the whole time we've been here. She says, "No. I just didn't know if you wanted one check or two. And there's no sharing." I'm over here like- if we all (who are eating) get all you can eat, why can't we share? I've never had an issue with that before. I leave a 20% tip although I haven't had such rude service before there in my life. Either they assumed we were going to "illegally" share our plates with the guy who playing with the baby, or they have an issue with black or disabled people. This was an amazing little surprise of tasty asian goodness in Boise ID in a strip mall towards the end of a very long roadtrip across the US. The bento was huge and I had to take about half of it home to eat. Good miso, tempura, and sushi. I ordered the korean beef entree, aka bulgogi, and it was tasty. They have typical tables and booths that sit four. Restaurant capacity if i remember correctly: they have 5 booths, 6 tables? It's not a huge place. I would visit again. If you sit in the front people will be standing over your table as they wait to be seated.
