Came here for a late birthday lunch with the family and was pleasantly surprised! The food was amazing, and the chef Andrew made a great impression on everyone and brought out a special dessert for me. Staff very nice and sushi rolls ordered were well received. The "ramen" was terrible - way too spicy and with no vegetables (other than a sprinkle of green onion), fish cake, or sliced pork. When I told our waitress the ramen was way too spicy for me, I could tell she was at a loss and only said that's how we do ramen. All I could do is take it home or leave it there uneaten. I am finding more and more restaurants embracing a more spicy or more sriracha topped or based offerings. Japanese ramen is rich and flavorful - either a beef, miso, or a seaweed broth base. If people are "demanding" spicy ramen, then please put sriracha or togarashi seasoning on the tables. read more

I can only speak about the takeout as I've never eaten in the restaurant. Ordering is easily done by calling. They're typically ready faster than the set time expectation when ordering by phone. The food is delicious and they have always gotten our order correct (have ordered at least 5+ times). I love the chicken teriyaki bento box and my wife loves the same, but adds vegetable tempura. This has easily become our go-to Japanese restaurant. read more

I just tried this place for the first time and it was so good!! I recommend the lindsay special, it was my favorite roll and super fresh. Our server with the gages was beyond helpful with the menu and super friendly! He provided excellent service even though it was super busy which made the experience even better. read more

I DoorDashed a roll while I was at work and it was absolutely delicious and so incredibly fresh. I typically have to have all the things lemon slices Sriracha low sodium soy sauce in order to be completely happy eating sushi, but that was not the case. It was perfect just the way it was and I enjoyed it so much. I had the Mikey special and I definitely recommend trying it. ;) read more

I try to come here at least once a week. I found this gem one day working in Carmichael, and the food does not disappoint. The sushi is really tasty and the price is great. The inside has two rooms so they can serve plenty of people and every single roll i ate here is delicious. Their lunch special is the best bang for your buck and you can get hamache kama for $6!!! Thats unheard of. Will come here for dinner. read more

My family went there after Kaye eats did a video on it on IG, and it was everything you want in a local sushi spot -- fresh, flavorful, and super friendly. The fish is was top quality, the rolls are creative without being over-the-top, and the service makes you feel right at home. We just ate here last night. It was okay. We ordered 4 different rolls. All the rolls came smothered in the same exact pink/white sauce. It made them all taste exactly the same, but with different textures. First couple were decent, after it wasn't great. Towards the end it actually got pretty gross. The restaurant was pretty cold inside, and the table we sat at was super wobbly. Also the lighting was pretty bright. We used to go here before it was recently sold. It had its issues, but the food used to be legit! I'm not trying to S on this restaurant. I hope they are able to get better.. although, if the masses like the same tasting roll covered in the same sauce, more power to them. read more

Came here for a friends birthday and had a great first experience. The sushi was delicious for starters. We ordered Boat C & Omakase Sashimi. The presentation of both was 10/10. Our waitress was really sweet and made great sake recommendations and even brought us two free rolls to start. My only complaint was that it took a longgg time to get water refills. I had two rolls the Tokyo and housewife. Both were very good and fresh. My girlfriend had chicken noodle plate which is massive and very tasty. The server was very thorough and check on us frequently (not every few minutes) which I like. The ambiance of the restaurant was amazing, nicely decorated walls (with lights) and floors. As of early December 2013 Shogun Sushi is under new ownership. Head Chef and proprietor, Jimmy Kil strives to make sure that his customers enjoy only the finest quality Japanese food available in the Sacramento area. Jimmy has been both a fish market buyer and expert trained head sushi chef for countless years.

Meet the Business Owner: Alex S.

Hello there! My name is Alex, I am the owner of Shogun Sushi. I have always dreamed of opening a restaurant specializing in my passion for sushi. I have been in the restaurant business for 11 years, but my passion for delivering quality food started in 1999 when my family moved to the United States. I worked hard alongside my mother and father at a teriyaki restaurant which sprouted my passion. The former owner Jimmy and I have been close friends for the majority of each other's lives, Jimmy offered me the opportunity to take over Shogun in early 2024. I had a vision for Shogun like no other. We wanted to create a special atmosphere that transports you into a different world while you experience new flavors of high-quality ingredients.

The Fire Pork Gimbap has spicy pork, pickle radish, cucumber, carrot, burdock, and egg. The Teokbokki has rice cake, fish cake, cabbage, green onion, and a boiled egg. The Sotteok-Sotteok is a skewered treat with sausage and crispy rice cake alternating with a few sauces. The chicken katsu was perfectly fried, nicely crispy, with the chicken being tender and juicy. They began with a focus on their awesome hot pots and some appetizers and have expanded to have a wide array of food options. I love a good soup, but I have to admit their rice bowls have become my new fave. The pork belly with quail eggs and the popcorn chicken bowls are our go to entrees now. We stop by after every pickleball game we have and our group can't help but order what we consider the "necessary" BA bites. AKA most of the menu. Salt and pepper tofu (my fave), grilled mackerel (yum), shrimp skewers (a classic), cucumber salad, garlic mushrooms and more. Never went wrong with trying something new from the menu. This place has always been a vibe and I've celebrated many an occasion here. But it's also one of our fave can't decide on anything dinner spots. Boiling Avenue will always hold a special place in my heart. Cheers!

As is typical with sukiyaki, the broth becomes very flavorful at the end, absorbing all the flavors from high-quality ingredients, but my udon got a little dry while waiting. Since I tried both set, the wagyu sukiyaki broth became a little too sweet at the end. My favorite is definitely the seafood sukiyaki broth. Would I try these pricy sukiyaki again? Probably not. Would I go back to Azayaka again? 100%. This would not discourage me from going back there any amount.

Came here for dinner a couple of times, the first time I ordered the rainbow roll ($15) which is my barometer for sushi at restaurants. Decently sized, the fish was fresh and the roll was filling. Daughter ordered the ramen ($18) with the red option, which she enjoyed with the plethora of toppings. Dinner the second time, I got the teishoku set with salmon ($21). Two decently filets of salmon came with rice, miso soup, salad, deep fried egg roll and salad. You also get a choice of either croquette or chawanmushi. The chawanmushi was a highlight for me! I missed eating this savory custard when I used to live in Japan. Their version did not disappoint! This has spot has become a rotating staple for me and am looking forward to trying out more of their sushi rolls.
