We were craving some Japanese food and found this place with decent reviews. We came on a Saturday around lunch and it wasn't busy. The exterior is very unsuspecting. I would have never thought a Japanese restaurant was here. The inside was another story! The inside is decorated with all kinds of Japanese pictures and decor. You definitely felt like you were in a Japanese restaurant. The menu was impressive! Everything had pictures which is so amazing! It was just easier having an idea of what to pick based on looking at the pictures. There were all kinds of sushi rolls, bento boxes, noodles, appetizers and plates. We decided to get the ramen, salmon katsu, and tempura bowl. Food came our really quick. Portions were good and everything we tasted wonderful. It definitely satisfied our craving. The tempura was crispy. The ramen broth was rich and noodles nice and chewy. The bento box came with gyoza, salad, tempura, oranges, miso soup and rice. Service was great. They were attentive, and friendly. Eating with our littles ones is never easy and we appreciated how patient they were with us. Sometimes those restaurants that look less-than-inspiring on the outside can be a true hidden treasure on the inside. This is exactly what I had experienced when I paid a visit to "Akira Sushi" Located directly on Greenback Lane and adjacent to Auburn Blvd in Citrus Heights, this place opened its doors for business back in mid-2024. Since then, they have seen a very respectable amount of positive reviews. As I had previously mentioned, the exterior isn't much to look at as this is a fairly dated strip mall that hasn't received any updates in decades. And to those that remember, this is the same building that "Pho 54" occupied from 2013-2023. During my visit which was the afternoon of Sunday 8/3/2025 at around 5:15pm, I parked directly outside as there were no other cars here. Upon entry, there was one other customer finishing dinner. After being greeted and seated, I was given a menu complete with a cold glass of iced water. I will say that the interior of this place is quite impressive, cozy, and inviting. The distressed wooden tables paired up with the tan-colored walls and unique murals add an upscale look to the overall interior. On a packed evening, this place can comfortably seat around 50 guests. I will say that their menu is fully loaded with pure deliciousness. They offer a huge variety of traditional sushi rolls, custom rolls, Bento boxes, seafood tacos (available in tuna or salmon), Poke bowls, and even ramen for the colder days/evenings. And even a nice variety of beverages including soda, beer, wine, and sake. Since I was dining solo, I decided on the "Sunomomo Salad" which was a cucumber salad w/Ponzu sauce and Bonito flakes. My main dish was their "Napa Valley" roll which uses shrimp tempura, cucumbers, avocado, spicy aioli, unagi sauce, and topped with sesame seeds. My salad was brought out in less than 3 minutes while my sushi arrived just a few minutes later. I will say that everything was very fresh and delicious. The avocado had perfect consistency while the shrimp was made to perfection. In my humble opinion, this was an absolute gem of a roll. All in all, "Akira Sushi" is about as good as it gets for quality sushi in Citrus Heights. They have very respectable hours of operation being open 6 days a week; Tuesday through Sunday from 11:30am-2:30pm / 4:00-8:30pm with extended hours on Fri/Sat while being closed for business on Monday. Service was great as the young lady that waited on me was polite, courteous, and respectful. With a great atmosphere, delicious food, and reasonable prices, I am giving Akira Sushi a unanimous five-star rating. read more

We came to Akira Sushi on a Thursday evening before catching the new Demon Slayer movie. It was our first visit, and since it was on the way, we figured we'd give it a try -- and we're so glad we did! Everything was a 10/10 experience from start to finish. We arrived around 5 p.m. and were one of just a few parties seated, so it was quiet and relaxed. The first thing we noticed was how beautifully decorated it was inside. Like others have mentioned, the exterior might not catch your eye right away, but once you step in, it's vibrant and welcoming. Our server was friendly, attentive, and made sure we had everything we needed throughout our meal. We ordered the sashimi nigiri plate, agedashi tofu, and an eel roll (I can't remember the exact name). Every dish was excellent -- the fish was incredibly fresh, and the agedashi sauce was bursting with flavor. Honestly, it's the best agedashi tofu we've had so far! We were too hungry to snap photos this time, but I'll definitely add some on our next visit. Love it. Love it!! I'm actually eager to try their sashimi after my lunch visit today. This is going to be my new go-to Japanese spot for authentic Japanese food. Today, I ordered Chicken Katsu bento and just off the bat, they tenderize the meat very well before flour-ing and panko-ing, as well as deep frying it to perfection. The depth of the chicken meat is very thick and the moistness is absolutely perfect. Just like how Katsu tastes in Shibuya or Chiyoda. Maybe that's a bit of a stretch but the food quality is definitely pointing you back in that direction. The finished product is definitely legit Katsu for anyone who judges Katsu critically. I needed to find a sushi spot on the way to the movies and stumbled upon this hidden gem. I've driven past this place hundreds of times on Greenback and somehow never noticed it. From the outside, it's tucked into an older strip mall that doesn't look like much--but don't let that fool you. Inside, it's super clean, well-kept, and welcoming. The service was honestly one of the best parts of the visit. From the moment we walked in, the staff was incredibly friendly, attentive, and patient. Stopped in on a Sunday for takeout. Service was friendly and polite. Place was clean and welcoming. Had a large flat screen TV on low volume showing a basketball game. No sushi bar that I saw. The tables were booths, a few chair style tables, and they are nice. I ordered sushi and sashimi combo. Was $38 after tax. 2 hand rolls (fried tempura and spicy tuna), 4 nigiri and 6 sashimi. It was not ruined by sauces, garnishes or seasonings. Had lots of natural colored ginger and a small amount of wasabe paste. Came with 2 Lee Kum Kee soy sauce packets (bleh) and a good pair of chopsticks. For the price, it needs to have soup and steamed rice. It did not fill me up. For $40 after a small tip, it better fill me up. Rice and miso soup are very inexpensive for restaurant production even with the extra packaging. I'll have to apply my dollar elsewhere. If only I were born with a house to inherit or a silver spoon in my mouth, or with better timing of life. If I owned my own home and money didn't matter, this would be a good spot. read more

Don't let the location fool you Akira is totally remodeled and contemporary inside. Unfortunately you can't order alcohol atm as their liquor license hasn't been approved yet. Hopefully that gets resolved soon as a nice Japanese beer always compliments Japanese food. We tried several items all of which were presented beautifully. My pork katsu came with a mortar and pestle to grind sesame seeds to be combined with sauce for my katsu. Grinding the seeds released their aroma which made us hungrier. All of our food was fresh and tasty my pork was not dry and my GF's collar was still pink in the center perfectly cooked. Really solid sushi restaurant in the Citrus Heights area at the end of Greenback. It's always really great to see new sushi and Japanese restaurants in this area, and this is no exception. Tucked away in a strip-mall with attached parking, the front of the store is very non-descript, but the indoors is cozy with plenty of nice seating and enough space for family/friends to gather. Would also be solid as a date-style restaurant. The food is solid - overall the options are plentiful, and they have both raw-fish and non-raw options, of which we got a handful of each. The rolls aren't doused in sauce to cover up poor fish selection and overall are constructed well with a good proportion of sushi rice. Their bento boxes and donburi over rice dishes are tasty and well made. The These portions are bit on the smaller side, so if you're hungry make sure you get another roll or side to go with! Prices are a little bit on the higher side, but the quality is excellent overall. Servers are super friendly and down to earth - definitely has the perfect mom-and-pop Japanese/sushi type restaurant. I must say the miso soup was very tasty along with the sunomono (cucumber salad). My family ordered a few appetizers such as the chicken kaarage and soft shelled crab, which were delicious.
