Been wanting to have dinner at this place for some time, I always pass by on my way to my studio. It was a huge discover!! Very nice cuts, freshness, savory dishes, nigiris are out of control!! First let me start by saying the service was very friendly and very good. I've seen a lot of negative comments here but at least my experience was very good. I went for meatless Monday and had an assortment of small appetizers so that I can try a lot of small plates at one time. The least liked was the cauliflower wings, it just didn't impress with really no crunch and what looked like small clumps smothered in Hawaiian sauce. I had the tofu buns which I did enjoy and would like to see just a bit more pizzazz in them. Next I had the vegetable dumplings...these were very good. Last was the yasai roll which was such a different experience with ground peanuts and a spicy mustard already in the mix. It was certainly out of the ordinary. This place has indoor and outdoor seating and has a modern vibe to it. They do offer free parking but unless you know where it's at you'll probably be parking on the street. It's an all around nice location just north of the Design District. No ice tea was a let down, the only option here was matcha green tea which is a turn off. Expect moderate prices and on heavy traffic days I do recommend a reservation as seating is limited. They are true to vegetarian and vegan dishes using true veg/vegan ingredients and cooking methods. This is my go to places if I want really good Asian sorbet dessert. I came here initially intend to try the ramen noodle, as I still struggle to find decent ramen in Miami and saw this place on Yelp. I ordered spicy tuna tartar on crispy rice as recommended by our waiter, and of course signature ramen. I did not like the former, as tuna tartar plus crispy rice formed an interesting texture combination that doesn't really work together. The ramen is above average , I really like the simmered eggs and the pork, but the broth is a bit oily. The appetizer and ramen is pushing me towards a 3.5 until I tried the dessert, which I could give about 3500 stars. The taro based sorbet is perfect sized to share, and has different goodies that the waiter will mixed them with taro paste, taro ice cream and shaved ice. Our waiter disappeared the entire time we dined. The food was good but there were a couple things that were just OK. We wanted to order more food but our waiter never came back so we just couldn't. We ordered a bottle of Prosecco because it turned out to be more cost-effective than ordering drinks. Overall, for two we spent $108 without tip. This place is just alright to me. What's cool about this place is that it's down the street from where I live , so I can easily walk here. As I walked in, I was easily greeted by a Spanish woman( which threw me off, because I was in a Japanese restaurant). This place has a nice setting to it but, I felt it was a little jam-packed in there.(no one likes that feeling). As for the service, I was greeted once again with a Spanish woman and spoke to me in Spanish. I had no idea what she was saying and felt confused. So then, after she caught on that i only spoke English , I think the manager took my order. The service was a bit slow. Took about 15 minutes to get me my water and tea. The food came out faster than my drinks. For the food itself, I am a DIE HARD IKURA LOVER and totally enjoyed my Ikura! I ordered the Shio Ramen and to be quite honest, it was way too salty for my taste. I compared it to the ramen at Ichimi and Ichimi was way better. The broth here at Shokudo could tone down the salt. Herd a lot of good things about this place so I Stopped by for dinner. The place was surprisingly empty, Sat at the bar and enjoyed watching the sushi chefs at work. The food was good. Ordered the shrimp/ pork dumplings (good- the tobiko was strange and unnecessary component) the spicy tuna roll (awesome, probably one of the best spicy tuna rolls I've ever had, very flavorful and the added crunch of the tempura flakes was killer! The blue crab avocado roll (good) The rolls were great, very little rice. I've noticed that Most sushi nowadays serve these over sized giant rice rolls with barely any filler, shokudo rolls are filled with fish rolled to perfection with a nicely thin rolled layer of rice. Last, I ended up with salmon and toro sashimi. Very fresh, melted like butter and simply delicious. My least favorite thing was the eel nigiri. Something was off with the eel it had a really weird taste. Flavor was off putting. Also I wish the menu had some more chicken, beef appetizers and entrees. A lot of the dishes are very standard and common (find them in a lot of Japanese restaurants).. there was nothing special or unique about the dishes... I've been on a quest for best Miami Ramen for a while and though I do have a favorite place, I believe I haven't found it yet. Came here looking for that Ramen and this was actually the worst Ramen I've ever tried in my life. I guess since they're a sushi place, their specialty is sushi or else but why have this item in your menu and not make it at least decent. First of all, the broth had no depth or even that much flavor, kinda bland. I can say the same thing about the three small pieces of pork belly that had no flavor at all and for $18, one would expect a little more than a mediocre "soup" if that. I ate this because I was really hungry and it was in front of me so what choice did I have. The service was actually really good and waiter was friendly and attentive. I can only rate them for the Ramen, maybe their sushi is good and that's why they have a 4 star rating on Yelp but who knows, the place only had one customer on the countertop and two tables occupied and I was one of them. After doing some Yelp research for Thai food we ended up here. The place is not that big but we were able to get in on a Sunday night with no reservation. We ordered the kalbi rice which wasn't what I expected. It was a lettuce wrap with rice vs. a rice dish. It was good but not what we thought it would be. The chicken potstickers were as good as anywhere else. The pad thai with chicken was very tasty and a large enough portion that I had the leftovers for lunch. For me it was ok! I've had eaten in plenty of sushi places around Miami and this is ok, they have some signature plates that are really good but in general it's nothing like to die for. If you go there I'll definitely recommend the octopus appetizer is a 5 star on the menu and the salmon carpaccio. We had 4 different dicho plates and none of them were extra good that I would remember the name to recommend but it's decent good fresh sushi. The only thing is that there's not much parking around and it's really hard to park, there's a valet parking like a block away but sometimes the bakers are not there and it's like confusing because you can't see it from the restaurant but it's there and it's available at a 5$ flat rate which is fine compared to valet parking prices around Miami. Shokudo is such a sweet addition to the neighborhood! I went in a Friday night for my dear Tashi's bday dinner. At first I was a bit unimpressed... trendy, modern Asian decor, hmmn.. usually too much trend overcompensates for food *or* service in the area these days. That said, it is gorgeous, comfy, not-insanely-loud and no pretentious staff (thank gawd!). We had a group of five and were sat a table that was plenty roomy. Another instant big plus... we were sat before our entire group had arrived. Big ups Shokudo for not making us hover awkwardly and stare from the hostess stand, longingly, at drinks and appetizers on other diners' tables. I promise, this group will get right to the drinking and eating (the stragglers can play catch up). The drink menu was interesting with the usual Asian beer suspect, with some new-to-me sake and plum wines. It took me a bit to settle in on a drink, but after reviewing the menu, the waiter asked me what I liked and he actually came up with the exact wine that I was thinking of ordering. Perfecto!!! An educated staff goes a long way with this girl right here. After as few sip sips of some yummy sake wine, I started to look over the menu.. okay, well, drool over the menu. I was trying to eat light, since it was later in the evening, but there was about, ohhh... I'd say everything on the menu, that I wanted to order, so that went out the window fairly quickly. That's the great thing about dining with my peeps tho, because we are a sharing kind-of-bunch. This ensures that no one gets the dreaded "order-envy". This night, I was particularly pleased to try (not only my spicy maki trio) some noodles, rice, skewers and dumplings. There are so many other items, I cant wait to try. I loved this restaurant so much that I was very tempted to go back the very next day. Amazing and delicious dishes. Not your typical flavors. We ordered the daily appetizer special which was the lobster dumpling. I usually asked for them steamed, but totally forgot and boy am I happy I did. It wasn't fried instead it was softly pan seared which gave it an amazing texture. The filling was spectacular, they should definitely add it to their regular menu. We also had the Momo dumpling which had a smooth potato filling and amazing curry sauce. As the entrée we had the special which was a fried pork shank served with different toppings like mangoes, red onions, cucumbers, and tomatoes and a side of something that looked like tortillas, forgot the name, but the combination of the pork and mango and all the fresh toppings was unbelievable. Shokudo may not be the cheapest when it comes to Asian fusion restaurants, but their food is consistently great or good. They seem to get a lot of take-out orders, which can slow down the flow of food to your table. I really like the cozy dark interior, and the staff is friendly and helpful. The sushi rolls are the most reasonably priced on the menu just over $10. The Buena Vista Roll with eel and crispy salmon skin had some great crunch to it. A favorite appetizer is the Momo- steamed dumplings filled with yam puree, served in a tomato sauce. Sort of a Tibetan version of Ravioli. We opted for the daily specials: Grilled octopus with sweet potato puree appetizer and spicy Hunan lamb with stir fried noodles and veggies. The octopus was perfect: tender, great seasoning and crispy char. The only complaint I have about both octopus and potato puree- there wasn't enough of it. $14 seemed a lot for the portion size. The BF really liked his spicy lamb dish, and believe me, he is picky when it comes to meat, or food in general. For $20 it was a generous portion with a good amount of lamb. In general, they know how to season and grill their proteins here, so kudos! For dessert, I absolutely loved the coconut pudding. It's served parfait style, with pudding on the bottom, a layer of brown sugar soaked soft bread, topped with a pile of whipped cream and coconut meat. Reminiscent of Tres Leches, only better. The banana spring rolls were a miss. They were ueber hot in the center, almost like they'd been microwaved, puny and the spring roll skins were dried out and hard, not flaky or crispy as they should be. Definitely not a $9 dessert, maybe $4 if you're feeling generous. Will know to stay away from that next time. read more

Having been around the block a few times in my life, I don't surprise easily. However, having dined in and around the Design District, I was surprised by the appearance of Shokudo one night as I was driving down NE 2nd. I thought that I must be seeing something, or that what I was seeing on the edge of gentrification was something akin to a (How do I put this lightly?) shit hole. Yet, over the past few weeks I have continually had thoughts of this place called Shokudo, wondering what it was, who went there, and was it a place to try. Finally, today for lunch, I broke through the inertia and tried what was a beautiful place with a lovely terrace and well-trained staff. For those of you who knew World Resource Cafe, you will find a more tightly curated (ergo smaller) menu that provides access to various Asian regions: Thai, Japanese, Chinese, etc. The concept is one of Asian street food...without the need to travel to said Asian streets. Today, I had a wonderful pad thai, which while a staple at so many places is so often ketchup-y, overly sweet, and more of a side dish than a main course. My dining partner had the bento box with perfectly made shrimp and vegetable tempura, and what he described as expertly cut sashimi that was fresh, delicate, and delicious. It must have been. He didn't even offer to let me try it. The decor is tasteful with ample seating and settings. If the whether is cooperating, may I suggest the terrace in the back that removes any recollection that NE 2nd is just steps away. This place was my GO TO lunch spot when I was in midtown Miami for business until just recently. I would go on my own, with friends, for business meetings, and even took family. I loved their lunch SO MUCH that I would even order to go. And during dinner I would also order to go if I was in the area. I mean, they make their bagel rolls with scallions, and I loved their miso soup. But something is wrong with their service. I don't know if it was because they saw me there often, and got comfortable with me, or because they are just like this. I just know two incidents happened and I just don't think I want to go in for a third one. The first incident was during a lunch business meeting with someone who is also my friend. My friend is rather pretty, and as we were leaving the server that was helping us stood behind her and told her, "If you don't move from in front of me, you can blame for what I will do behind you." Yup, he basically sexually harassed her. And it was so subtle and close to her that the sushi bar and the another sever sort of just muffled a laugh in disbelief. I was on my way out the door and barely caught what had happened until we left and she told me about it. And then it made sense what I saw as I was walking out. So after the incident I decided to talk to the owner, a really nice lady that was close to my age. She said she would take care of letting the staff know that was inappropriate and I decided to move on. But about two weeks ago something else happened. This time it was with my brother. We walked in for lunch and were in a hurry, I had to make it to a funeral. And I quickly ordered and so did he, and I rushed to the rest room. Soon after I came back the food arrived. And the guy said he didn't care what my brother thought. At which point he threatened to call the police on my brother. My brother got upset, and they almost got into a fist fight in the middle of the restaurant. Honestly, my brother did nothing wrong and this server was completely out of it. We left super distraught. I was truly upset about this. So I went back to try to talk to the manager a few times during the week. They blocked all my attempts, saying the manager wasn't there and that she would call me back. She never did. So neither did I. Word to the wise though, if it's a one time thing maybe it will be fine. But this place is not somewhere for a returning customer. It's customer service really is terrible, staff was rude, manager was unresponsive after that horrible last incident. I'm never going back. read more

We went on a rainy evening after a yoga event. The place is super chill no need to dress up. I asked about 3 waiters what the most popular meal was and the all recommended the orange chicken. Miso soup didn't seem warm enough, I don't know how anyone can mess up a version of ahi tuna tartare but they managed to serve something that feels like leftovers pulled from a fridge with stale chips. I really can't wrap my head around how someone could serve a bad tuna tartare but they seem to have The Korean BBQ was so par and the dumplings felt like they pulled it out of the fridge from yesterday's dinner service. on a basic level I ordered a beer and they forgot about it had to remind him 3/4 through the course so I just skipped it. I would say the octopus was not that good either again not fresh but they did serve it with this mashed potato that was actually very good. I would not come here again I would recommend at this restaurant just minimize their menu two things they can actually cook well versus trying to be everything to everyone with the menu and I do one thing totally right except for those mashed potatoes read more
