Sadly it was not as good and it's going downhill :( They changed new management so lots of new faces. I got the salmon donburi and it was quite odd. First of all, I got a silver spoon which was interesting. The salmon was partially warm so I was concerned about the freshness. The rice's texture was so so but the pickled veggies were nice. Lunch bento: The tonkatsu pork was where the batter just fell off of the pork which didn't look like tonkatsu at all. The salmon was also overcooked. The reason why it lost stars was because the person who made the sashimi for us also took the trash, cleaned up tables, served water and am wondering about the sanitary problem. I'm glad that I'm okay but I'm concerned about the cleanliness. One good thing was that the miso soup was not as salty as the previous owner of Shoten! read more

I've been here many times in the past and it used to be one of my favorite spots. Unfortunately, the last three visits have been disappointing. The fish didn't taste as fresh as before, and overall the food quality seemed off. The rice was warm, but not hot, which made the meal less enjoyable. The service also felt different--staff didn't seem as upbeat or engaged as they used to be. This place used to be my go-to, but something has changed. Another local gem we stopped by for dinner in Beaverton. It's a nice cozy local spot. I was shocked to see how large the nigiri were! The 503 roll was really loaded and lots of flavor, I'd get this again! The chicken katsu curry was also really good, the curry paired really well with the crispy chicken. This spot has really been hit or miss lately, depending on what you order. When the original owners ran the place, the food was much more consistent and generally very good. Since the change in ownership, a lot has changed -- and not always for the better. Service has also been inconsistent. Sometimes it's great, other times it's slow or inattentive. Sometimes a good test to see how fresh the fish is at any particular sushi establishment is to simply order sashimi... with nothing to hide. Nothing covered in sauces or fusion-whatever. Just the sashimi itself. Honestly I just wanted to taste the fish by itself. Shoten opens at 11am and now on Sundays as well and it's the perfect time to go there for a nearly lunch with friends. The staff have always been polite, courteous, and helpful with anything you may need. They have recently changed their menu and I wanted to see how they were doing. I was pleasantly surprised that they are doing very well. My friends ordered various things, but I had one thing I needed to get out of the way. They simply nailed it. A plate of basic sashimi. Presentation was pretty, the slices thick, and more importantly fresh. Each fish, the Tuna, the tataki, the hamachi and the salmon. Perfect... pared perfectly with the warm bottle of sake I had ordered as well. You cannot go wrong with something so simple and perfect as this. I enjoyed every single bite. With that out of the way, I will come back to try their nigiri-zushi at another time. Well done Shoten. I will be back! read more

We ordered scallop volcano, this is a really good dish and fully cooked, very yummy sauce over baked scallops with spicy mayo sauce and on top of california rolls. Yaki udon was disappointing because it was drenched in sauce that was too sweet and chicken was over cooked. It was enough wok to be considered stirfry, would not recommend anyone ordering that. Live nearby and have been a regular for a couple years. They have changed personnel at least and as others noted likely mangt. And like others noted, can confirm the place has gone downhill. The quality generally isn't what it was Last visit the rice in the sushi was so gelatinous u couldn't pick out the individual grains- probably not the right rice. Ramen is still pretty good and fish isn't bad. I'll try one more time but running out of patience with the place. Eat at Desi Bites next door is a good recommendation. read more

Love their bento box combinations, and is my go-to bento box resto on this side of town. There's plenty to choose from and don't do what I did and order another side of sushi, it was too much food for me to finish, but hey I took the extras to work the next day. I got the salmon teriyaki and the sashimi, and everything was on point, and delicious. A bento box for dinner, and it only being $17, is a screaming deal, in my opinion. I ordered mine to go, sat down outside a few doors down at the Craft Pour House, and enjoyed my bento and a cold pint in the shade on a warm sunny day. read more

My parents love coming here with their friends and my friends in HS loved this place too. They have a lot of takeout orders and are a little understaffed during lunchtime so it took maybe 10-15 mins to get seated with no one else waiting in front of us. Awesome Roll - pretty tasty, nothing super memorable since it's just seared salmon with shrimp tempura but large rolls make you feel like you're getting your moneys worth Sashimi Deluxe - enough to split among 3 people, thick cut sashimi and tasted fresh Eel Avocado Roll - my personal favorite, really flavorful and the eel was deboned well, didn't eat any of the fine bones you sometimes get elsewhere (would order again!!) All I got was the California Roll with tons of sauce and scallops. Probably one of my favorite sushi dishes I have ever gotten. The price for it was about 15$ and it was so worth it. The service was good but I just picked up my order. They said it will take 50 Minutes to complete my order but since I only ordered one dish I checked in after 25 min and it was ready. Before the pandemic, I went there for lunch and they were always busy. Decent service, and they gave you a lot of food. Lunch combo was always good, so you can try from bento style to sashimi. During the pandemic, we like to pick some sashimi and hand rolls for lunch and add some appetizers for dinner such sbbacon wrapped scallops. Or chicken karaage. Monster sized sashimi portions! The Sashimi Deluxe entree portion was very generous. I should have taken note of that fact prior to ordering the entree along with additional appetizers, including sides of Uni. The Sashimi slices were cut very thick and was ok. The Sunkist Salmon appetizer was the best dish with the salmon sashimi aided somewhat by the acidic flavor from the orange flavored sauce and orange slices. Continuing the overall theme the uni was pretty impressive in size but had a disappointing metallic flavor. This was one of the few times I've left uni behind as bad uni just isn't worth it. Not a lot of places capture the Izakaya feel like Shoten does. With a very classic, homey decor, wide menu selection, and great food, Shoten brings Japanese dining beyond just your paltry western sushi joint. Too often do Japanese places of this price point forego small savory dishes like the humble Salmon Collar, or will heat up 3 small frozen gyozas and call that a side. However, the devil's in the details with Shoten, who prepares those classics from their kitchen, which tipped me off to the quality and care they have for their food. Of course, their sushi and don selection is primarily what people look to for their order, which so far has not disappointed in terms of size, freshness, and taste. Shoten is my favorite spot to go. It's most affordable and the fish is pretty decent. I always get their Chirashi bowl, it's the best deal for your buck. The Chirashi bowl comes with a miso soup. If you go with a group 3 or more and all of you agree on the raw fish, definitely get the Chef's Sashimi. My husband usually get their Alaskan Roll, they give a good amount of fish in their rolls. read more

Another yelper wrote a pretty negative review of Shoten last week. This prompted two reactions for me and my teen: 1) outrage, because we love this place. 2) cravings, because we love this place. So when teen's dad offered to pick up dinner on Friday night we sent him here. It was smooth AND contactless. I ordered and paid over the phone. He went to pick up at the appointed time and our food was on a table stuck in their doorway ready to go. When he brought it to us everything was fresh and tasty. The hot foods were hot, the cold foods were cold. We ordered three bentos, $14 each and we got a 15% discount for picking it up ourselves. Each bento comes with salad,miso, perfectly cooked rice, two gyoza, and 4 p of fresh yummy California roll. The only thing off was the tempura had no dipping sauce, so we made some. And there was no soy sauce so we got some of ours out. My ex cleaned his plate ( er bento box) which NEVER happens. Teen and I both had leftovers. A completely successful quarantine takeout experience. And we have had some not great ones lately. We look forward to eating in again soon in their cozy space with the fun 80s music and the green tea ice cream beloved by my teen. read more

I was a little skeptical about this place because it's in a strip mall. We walked in and were seated right away, but that is where the customer service stopped. We waited for about 20 minutes before we flagged someone down and asked if we could place our order and get water. We ordered a couple rolls off the happy hour menu. While we waited for those we picked some other rolls off the dinner menu. It took about 30 minutes for our happy hour rolls to come out and another 30-45 minutes for the rest to come. The restaurant wasn't that busy and we didn't order complicated rolls. I am very disappointed in how bad the service was. The food was good and the portions were large, but I don't feel that it was worth the wait or the price. I likely won't be returning. read more

I used to come here semi-frequently with my family a few years ago. We revisited Shoten for takeout recently and had a great experience! The staff was friendly and our order was ready on time. Our order was good quality and good value - you get a ton of thick sashimi in each dish. I've never had a Philadelphia roll with so much fresh salmon on top! The waitress was very unfriendly and the policy of the restaurant is no substitutions even when my husband stated he was allergic to avocado and as far as California roll without it was a battle just to get that done.
