I heard such good things about this place so I figured why not give it a try. Boy do I regret it. I got the orange dragon and jazz roll. The orange dragon roll wasn't great but nothing to really complain about just subpar. the jazz roll on the other hand, was inedible. I had to spit it out. I could tell from first looks that something was off. the spicy tuna on top looked nothing like the photo, it was gray and brown in color. The roll that has shrimp tempura didn't have any ends/tails on it and tasted like it it could've been cooked days/weeks ago, tasted like the inside of a fridge. Everything was extremely fishy and old. I called up to let the Owner know, but he didn't seem to care or worry about the food safety. Do not recommend. Edit to respond to owner: I want to note that the tone of your response here is very different from how the conversation went on the phone. It feels like you're trying to present things more carefully now, which was not my experience during our call. After speaking with you on the phone, I did not feel that my concerns about the fish were taken seriously. I eat sushi 2-3 times a week, and I have never encountered fish with that kind of taste before. Additionally, the shrimp tempura did not seem fresh - it was soggy and had an off taste, almost like it had been sitting in a refrigerator. People reviewing the place based on its egg rolls or other Chinese cuisine are in the wrong place. Go to Hunan or some other Chinese eatery. But if you want the freshest fish, best Japanese uni in the world and buttery king salmon and toro, paired with a very good house sake... this is the best I've been to. The service is also excellent. Love this place. I've searched high and low throughout Nassau County for decent sushi place that meets my demanding palate. This simply designed place with a small sushi bar and a handful of tables, has proven by far to be the best I've come across outside of and perhaps including the City. The fish is the best I've had and even their rice is superb. The service is always exceptional and very friendly. Prices are beyond reasonable. My only hesitation about posting this is my fear that I may make it harder to get a table. If so, then I've done my job and hope Umami is around for years to come serving the same food. read more

An enjoyable sushi spot for in-office days in Huntington. Umami is conveniently located right in the central area of Main Street in Huntington making it accessible from the main parking areas and walkable from other hot spots like The Paramount and Main Street Board Game Cafe. It is small and quiet, with quick service for to-go and in-house orders. The staff are very friendly and accommodating when it comes to squeezing in an order at lunchtime. I have never waited more than 12 minutes for mine to be ready. I typically order the 2 roll lunch special and have enjoyed the Tuna Cucumber, Philadelphia, Salmon Avocado, Salmon Mango, and others. The soup that comes with it is a large serving and always piping hot - perfect for a freezing winter day like today while I am writing this! It wasn't Japanese owned-which is fine...but the premium items were not available and it was mediocre sushi at best, nothing special. Food was just ok, not bad but nothing that was memorable. Service was fine, we had a hard time understanding the servers with their accent but they were friendly, and the ambiance was just low key and low maintenance. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED On Monday, November 18th, I hosted a dinner for 8 at this relatively new and modestly priced Japanese/Asian Fusion restaurant. It is a small storefront restaurant. There is a convenient back entrance from the Gerard Street parking lot. Park there. Our friendly young waitress could not have been more pleasant, attentive and helpful. She supplied our group with complimentary Edamame and a complimentary taste of something I could not identify. Both were delicious. The Kitchen and Sushi Chefs did a great job getting dishes out quickly. I started my meal with "Crispy Spinach". Think of fried Brussel Sprouts and you get the texture. It was a yummy way to eat a healthy vegetable. I then got four pieces of Salmon Sushi (sake) for $3.00 a piece. The Salmon was amazingly fresh and the Sushi Rice was flavorful. I concluded my meal with General Tso's Chicken ($16). It was a great version. It tasted light with very little breading. While some of my fellow diners enjoyed Ice Cream, I did not have dessert. My fellow diners enjoyed the General Tso's Tofu, Orange Chicken, the Soft Shell Crab App, the Sashimi Deluxe Platter ($25.00), Shrimp Gyoza, the Wet Dumplings and a very wide selection of Sushi Rolls. BOTTOM LINE: Many times, hype for new restaurants on Yelp is the suspect "pumping" of friends and family. Not the case with Umami Japan. Trust the prior reviews. If you like fresh sashimi, I highly recommend giving this restaurant a try! I am pleasantly surprised at how tasty everything was. I ordered take out and got a little bit of everything to taste test/try this restaurant, and my parents and I loved each dish. We especially loved their sushi rice. At most japanese restaurants, their sushi rice tends to be dry and not as flavorful. But at umami, there is a bite to the rice and it tastes like it's been slightly seasoned - nothing like I've had at other japanese restaurants. miso soup: feel like it's hard to mess this one up, it was good - but nothing outstanding from what I've had before. Sushi/sashimi combo: sashimi was so fresh, honestly not sure what kind of fish for the sushi was included - but the salmon and tuna sashimi was so buttery soft and FRESH! Sweetheart roll: visually appealing, tuna sashimi on top of roll was so good. Inside the roll was slightly sweet and salty combo. Tobiko (flying fish roe) sushi: fee like this is hard to mess up. It's seaweed laver, rice, and tobiko eggs. if you like crunchy, salty, and sweet - definitely give this one a try! Tamago (egg omelette) sushi: delicate, soft, and sweet. Always a great piece to end the meal after having all the salty/savory flavors of sushi/sashimi. Toro (tuna belly) sushi: the priciest a la carte because it's market price - but it. was. worth. it. every. single. penny. The toro literally melts in your mouth and it is buttery smooth in texture. Sad I only got two. Spicy tuna hand roll: It was good, but not my fave from the dishes we got. It was what you would expect from title of dish. Spicy scallop hand roll: my FAVORITE of the dishes we ordered. It's chopped scallop with spicy mayo and tobiko eggs mixed in. It was exactly what I was craving! The interior is a little smaller than I expected, but there are three(?) booths, several regular tables, and seating in front of the chef by sushi bar. I feel like once word gets around about this restaurant - seating will be limited especially during peak days/hours. My only complaint is that the restaurant is a bit darker than I'd like for dining in experiences. The owner/manager seem really sweet and friendly - I was greeted immediately as I walked in the door. They also included a free salmon dish to sample on top of everything else I ordered, which I thought was really nice of them to do. Their service was really great. In terms of price: I would say it's definitely fair for the quality of the sushi/sashimi you're getting. I definitely found a new favorite restaurant I'll be frequenting when I have my next sushi/sashimi craving! The presentation of all the dishes were so beautiful. If this is what their presentation looked like for take out, I know their presentation for dining in will probably be even better.
