In Spring 2025, system stopped working. Shumate tech informed me that the 6 y/o heating coil that THEY installed was leaking coolant. There was none left. Put in 5 pounds of coolant, charged me $900. Two days later, that coolant had leaked out, too. (What did the tech THINK would happen?!) Needed to order materials to replace heating coil, should arrive early next week, then the week after, then the week after that. Meanwhile, I have no HVAC at all. Called another company, and was up and running in 2 days. Avoid. Avoid. AVOID. read more

My air conditioner was set to cool at 73 degrees. Noticing my home seemed a bit warm and muggy, I checked my thermostat: 74 degrees and 49% humidity. Uh oh! Something's amiss, and I got that sinking feeling, fearful that my AC was also sinking. Time to call Shumate and find out. I was referred to the nicest young man who patiently took me through the troubleshooting step by step, including, "Is your Humidifier turned on?" So sure I was that it was not, I said, "No, but please hold while I make sure." Oops! "Sir, it was ON." I corrected it, and immediately noticed the comfort level was already changing. I thanked him. My point in sharing my story is that a lesser person or a lesser company might have said, "Ma'am, sounds like you need a new compressor," or something similarly catastrophic. This employee was honest, and his integrity reflected well not only on him but also on SHUMATE. I forgot to ask for his name, but please check your records -- it was close to 5:00 PM today, June 27. Shumate installed an HVAC unit for my loft in the middle of 2023; It worked for approximately two months. They had to replace the entire unit. And the second one has had repeated issues with leaking coolant. I used another company to replace the unit coolant two more times! Last week, the unit quit working once again. Since Shumate installed it, I called them. Shumate told me a part was leaking. Although I have a warranty for 5 years, because I did not have a service agreement with Shumate, they are charging me close to one thousand dollars to make the latest "repair" on a unit less than two years old. Shumate, you have lost my business and the other 75 units in my building. You were the preferred business on our condo recommendation list but no more. Do not use this company! read more

Last year Shumate didn't call to schedule my fall/winter semi-annual system checkup that I prepaid for. They did show up - unannounced late in the fall which was a bit surprising. It's now July 1st and I had to call them to schedule my summer checkup. Tech said, I must have been overlooked - Yet Again. Had issues with a - not the brightest tech 2 years ago. Had a HVAC tech come to my home 7/31/24. He told me that the part was no longer under warranty and that it wasn't worth fixing and they would send out someone else to give me an estimate for a replacement. Actually, the part was under warranty, confirmed by two other companies. The replacement proposal was for a $15k Daikin system. My home is 1260 sq ft. I've used Shumate for Heating and Air for at least 20 years. I can't recommend them enough. They are so responsive. I usually get service and a fix the same day. They're knowledgeable and always explain to me what the issue is and what they did to fix it. I recommend getting on the premium plan. They'll come out 2x a year to perform maintenance on the Heating and the Air conditioner. And they have emergency service (which I've had to use for the AC). Worth it. read more

I've heard Shumate ads on the radio for years. My AC went out overnight and I remembered they advertise emergency service, so I gave them a call. Was told they only have emergency services for existing customers and people on their yearly maintenance plan. So much for emergency service..... Shumate has been taking care of my HVAC system for almost 20 years. Twice yearly service (furnace in Autumn, AC in Spring) and has kept things running nearly with a hitch. When a problem rarely arises, Shumate has someone there to fix it on the same day I call . Yesterday, after AC maintenance a week ago, my AC refused to come on. I called at 11:45 am and within two hours, the same tech who performed last week's service, Derek, was here. (The drain hose had slipped loose and was dripping into the pan.) Derek made sure the hose was secured ( I heard drilling) and in ten minutes or so, the AC came roaring back. At the end of the day Derek returned to briefly double check the repair. On a previous service call, an observant tech, Gary H., noticed rust holes in the 60 + year-old flue pipes for the furnace and water heater and in a day or so, came back to replace them, so I wouldn't be breathing CO1. Shumate also replaced my water heater in 2013, and I will choose them again when it needs replaced next time. Prices reflect the service and expertise. read more

DON'T USE THIS COMPANY. We're not a family that is rolling in money. We're not destitute, but we don't have a lot of extra money so when we turned our AC on for the first time and realized that it wasn't working at all at first we thought we could tough it out. But, by the 2nd week of June, it was 86 degrees in the house and it was unbearable. I called Shumate because our home inspector gave me the recommendation. They sent someone out. A guy named Mike. I was so grateful when the gentleman arrived. I have literally no clue how HVAC systems work and my husband had to work so I trusted the technician to help us by -- you know -- doing his job. He told me we were out of freon. He said it would take 6 units to refill it. I thought freon was something like gas in the tank of one's car, when you run out you refill it. I asked how much it was and was told it was $199 a unit. Ouch. Painful. But, I said to go ahead and fill up the whole thing as it was hot in the house and there was an upcoming heat wave. He did not explain that the reason we were out of freon was because there was a leak in our unit. He mentioned nothing about doing a leak test or anything. Just took advantage of the fact that I knew nothing about HVAC units and how they work and charged me almost $1400 for freon that was literally gone in two days. When I finally received the invoice (I had to track it down by calling the office because he didn't input my email address correctly) I read the notes he had entered, "Customer knows about the leak." I DID NOT KNOW ABOUT A LEAK. If I had known there was a leak I would not have pulled money out of our savings that we had worked so hard to save to literally BLOW IT AWAY. I naively trusted this man to help us and instead he effed my family and I over and now they're avoiding our calls and I am so sad and I'm tears because not only is it now 88 degrees in our house, I'm now out $1400 because of this company and their sh*tty service. I can't afford to be out $1400. We've spoken with a different HVAC company since then, and a contractor, and they've all said that Shumate screwed us and that we should stay on them to get our money back. And we will. Let me start off by saying, Jennifer is fantastic. She is very helpful and kind. The one star in this review is for her patience and professionalism. She is, solely, the ONLY good aspect of my experience with this company. Michael and Matt, the supervisors, DO NOT ANSWER their office phones at ANY point throughout the day. Not do they return phone call even after leaving NUMEROUS messages. I have a warranty on my Lenox, which was confirmed by the fantastic tech who came out to my house to service the system. Previously, all the system's parts have been covered whenever they were serviced. After the technician's departure, I received a bill for the part that was confirmed under warranty. Slimy move. I called the office and Jennifer confirmed that the part should have been covered even though Matt or Michael sent over a bill. I would have NEVER decided to service the part if it was not covered under my warranty. BEWARE of this penny pinching, unprofessional company. ****Side note: I have ALWAYS payed my bills onsite and never disputed a bill before this scam. read more

This company advertises on NPR (daily listener) so I hired them to service my HVAC as I was selling the property and I wanted to get an idea of the condition of my unit. They squeezed me into an 8:00 AM slot on a weekday morning. Glad they could accommodate but they sent the worst technician. Jaydon S. was clearly recovering from an opioid binge and could hardly string two sentences together. He attached gauges to my system to tell me I had a leak and needed Freon but my system was to old (1997) and my only option was replacement. During the buyer inspection it was noted that the sediment trap at the turn of the gas supply line was improperly installed and a missing cap on the air handler condensation drain line is allowing the escape of conditioned air. These are precisely the two issues that Shumate should have diagnosed during my tune-up/ inspection. Later that day I received a call from Shumate asking if I wanted to schedule an engineer to visit the home to determine the best replacement unit for my home. No thanks! The unit blows hot/cold for 22 years without a problem and I purchased a home warranty for $600. read more

I have used this company for over 2-years. One technician improperly installed our Smart Thermostat. When another technician came to repair it at our next appointment they informed us that it was not possible based on the way the previous installer had handled it. On our most recent maintenance visit we had been using our furnace for over 2-weeks. The technician did not come inside, nor ask us to turn off the unit at the thermostat. Our unit stopped working. When we realized what had happened, another technician was dispatched and told us our circuit board was fried and it would be over $800 for the part, not including labor. These people have cost me more money and headache than should ever be the case. This string of recent bad reviews is consistent with my experience of this company. Also note that they charge 2x the price for a single filter for the same 3-pack you can get on Amazon. One of many ways this company rips off their customers. read more

I used this company after buying my home four years ago. I purchased a new upstair's AC unit per their recommendation. The new unit has broken a few times, needed new parts and rarely works after season changes. This is always my fault bc I didn't purchase a service contract. I bought a brand new AC for over $4,000.00 less than a month from them. The unit is crap and today is the second time I have had to have them come out because it keeps knocking out. They scheduled an appointment for 3PM and didn't show up until almost 9PM. Today, I am still waiting for them for a call since 10AM and it's 9PM right now. I am annoyed and clearly hot at this point! Needed service on the unit they installed 7 years ago. The unit was low on charge and had a leak in the Coil. These coils were the subject of a class action law suit if replaced in 5 years, so not surprising that I would have a problem. The unit is a higher end model and has a big sign on it that says 10 year warranty. The first thing they told me was that since I didn't have an annual service agreement they wouldn't honor the warranty unless I could produce receipts for annual service from other HVAC service providers. I had two other companies say they would contact Lennox to get the part under warranty regardless of the service agreement As it turns out Shumate didn't register the unit when they installed it and that shortened the warranty to 5 years instead of 10. I'm replacing another unit in the house and having this one repaired by one of the other companies that tried to help me after Shumate let me down. On the plus side, the Shumate install was top notch, just let down by the home office that should have registered it and the service department policies. read more

I called Shumate to come out and give an estimate on duct repair. The technician came out and within five minutes, which was barely enough time to get into our crawl space, told me we needed all new duct work installed. He did not have one spec of dirt on him from being in a literal, crawl space; not one, yet he stated we needed all new duct work. I called Shumate because I wanted a second opinion after having another company provide an estimate. The other company, which was Coolray, was here for over an hour and I could hear them in the crawl space moving about assessing the work. That technician gave a very specific quote and listed the repairs, and at no time was I told that we needed to have all of our duct work repaired. I followed up my concern about the technician to a supervisor at Shumate. I left a voicemail after the technician left, and I have received no response to my concern. read more

In March 2018 we hired Shumate to replace two very old furnace units in our house. In May 2018 we brought them back to replace two very old AC units. In both cases we were very impressed with the professionalism of the team of guys who showed up to do the work. They arrived on time, kept everything clean, and stayed until the work was completed. I cannot say enough good about our experience. These guys are the best! I also want to put in a word about the "sales" guy, Shaun Hoover. Shaun is very knowledgeable and helped guide us through the options before providing a quote. In both cases Shumate stuck exactly to the quote even though I think they encountered some unexpected difficulties that caused extra effort. read more

Very nice and professional however, either the product or installation of our two units was poor. 2nd evaporator coil that has gone bad in the 5 years we have owned the two Lennox units. We have had the maintenance contract since the beginning but the services fees over and above the maintenance costs have been substantial. Despite me giving Shumate 2 stars, I've actually been pretty pleased with them when they don't send Tino to my damn house. Yesterday, the air was acting flaky. I called. I asked them to NOT send Tino out because every time they do, it ends up with me getting pissed off and calling and bitching someone out. To be fair- I will put the pros first and then the cons. Pro- When they don't send Tino to your house, they are awesome. They are fast, they are on point, they take care of you and you couldn't ask for better service or a better buch of people... However.. . Con- When they send Tino, prepare to have your blood pressure go up and prepare to be told that there isn't anything wrong with your air even though there damn well is! The first time he came out was the first fall after I had gotten a new AC. He fiddled around with stuff for FOUR hours and was never able to fix it and had to call someone else who fixed it (when they put the AC in, something in the furnace was too big so when we started using the heat, there was too much air and the fire was getting blown out. ) This was also the time he just left the door open and didn't bother to tell me that my cat, who only lives inside had gotten out. I didn't know he had gotten out until I saw him out the window. He came out a second time and couldn't fix whatever the issue was. Again, someone else had to come out and fix it. In March, I turned the air on for the first time and everything was fine until the temp outside would go down some and then the unit would make this weird noise (a buzzing sound of sorts) and the air would not come out as much as normal. He told me it was because the temp outside was low and I should call when it got warmer. Basically, I've been dealing with this weird noise half ass air thing since then and finally got around to calling them. I specifically asked for them to NOT send Tino. I told them that every time he came to my house he was never able to fix anything. Who did they send? Tino. What did he do? He puttered around and then said because of all the rain lately, there was an issue with the compressor. I know we have been having a lot of rain lately and I know it messes everything up, but DAMN! This has been going on since March. I called and they sent someone out and he determined that I had a negative pressure issue and you know what? He was right! Since I dealt with that problem, the air has been working perfectly. Thanks for nothing Tino. In a nutshell, if you call Shumate, make them swear that they will not send Tino to your house!! read more

The representative just said their scheduling system was messed and offered no remedy. (That must be a lie because I received two confirmation calls prior to the appointment.) Tech Savvy Tim Is Tops! The vents were blowing hot air from my 20-year old builder grade A/C unit. I did some research and called Shumate for an appointment. Tim came out to our home on-time and with a great attitude on a very hot day. He diagnosed the leak problem and added enough Freon to keep me going through the remainder of the summer. He didn't try to sell me a new unit. He didn't try to convince me the end was near. He simply fixed the problem and gave me some advice and options. No pressure. Just a laid-back nice guy with tech savvy air conditioning smarts who was extremely helpful and honest. A rare find these days. Wish all service calls could be handled just like Tim. read more

Called Shumate to perform annual evaluation/maintenance on 4 A/C units at my dental practice. The Shumate representative stated that she did not schedule the appointments for this but would have someone call me to schedule an appointment for the service. For the second year in a row, I was not called by Shumate to make an appointment and the technician just showed up at the office for the service the next day when the office was closed. I was called by the technician asking where we were and I told the service technician that we needed to SCHEDULE the appointment (like I was told by the Shumate representative) and not just spontaneously show up as we had patients in the office and needed to schedule a time when there would not be a technician in patient care areas when patients were in the office. The technician then called back to Shumate's office and had the Shumate representative call me with an attitude as if it was our fault for not being at the office. I gave them the benefit of the doubt the first time this happened but when it happened twice, I realized they were very disorganized and I will not use them again. read more

Shumate was scheduled to come for AC repair for a specific time, I left work early to meet the worker. I waited at home for about an hour after he scheduled time and no one showed up. I called Shumate for an update only for the rep to tell me the worker "didn't know what door to use to get into the building so he left." The worker finically showed up about 2 hours after the scheduled time, did not speak when he came into my house and proceeded to slam the from door open and shut while going in and out the house without saying a word. After about an hour of working, he left out and never returned. He never told me the issue was resolved, he left a mess, and took out the ac filter but didn't replace it. He had to come back the next day to replace it but came and left he filter by the door for me to replace myself! Overall, the issue was fixed, but the service was absolutely terrible. read more

Just had Shumate out to fix my air. They were quick, efficient, polite, and friendly. All I needed was more refrigerant. Phil, the technician, informed me of my options and was quick about his service. I'm much happier with the service at Shumate - I've tried others and they not nearly as quick or friendly (and even got things wrong and had to come back out). The only downside is they give you a 6 hour window for the tech to come out - too long! They do give you a warning call, which works for me since I work 5 minutes from my house, but if I wasn't so lucky that is much too long. They somewhat made up for it by being able to come out 2 days after I called. read more

I got several quotes to replace the condenser and coil on two hvac units at my home. Shumate was 30-50% less expensive than every one of the other quotes. I almost didn't believe the quote was correct, but it was. The techs came out to replace the units and did a great job. They went above and beyond because they also had to add another breaker box. The techs were really nice and explained everything to me, and the installation itself was better than before, because they improved some things that had been shortcutted by the original builders. And the best part, they didn't even try to get more money out of me. Their job was to put two units in, and they did everything necessary, even what they hadn't planned for, without complaint. Spent big money on a new furnace and AC, and while the brands they sell are good, their installation is a joke. Salesman "Dennis" told me I had to buy a new sump pump from them and couldn't use my 1-year-old one, but the installation guys just used my old one and charged me 80 bucks for a new one. I had marked the old one thinking they would do that, and they did... SHADY. Next, the installation guys made the easy-to-see front of the furnace look very professional, but the hard-to-get-too back literally had wholes in it, letting crawlspace dust into my house. Had to call them to fix it. Next, Dennis promised my 2-year-old "whole house humidifier" would be re-installed on the new furnace in working order. It's not. Now that winter is here, my house is dry because the installation guys wired the humidifier similar to how a child makes macaroni art. Random wires are jammed together and other wires were cut and left hanging from the crawlspace ceiling... STILL LIVE WITH ELECTRICITY sitting on top of aluminum foil air ducts! Speaking of which, their installation used that cheap Home Depot flex duct that any HVAC blog will tell you, no professional would ever use, yet my crawlspace is littered with it. Sandy Shumate must be Irish because how this company hasn't been sued for incompetence is just pure luck. Woke up in the morning and noticed water around bottom of my hot water heater. I have a finished basement and did not want to have a leak turn into a swimming pool in my house. I worked with Jeff Johnson at Shumate and he had his guys out within 2 hours to replace my 13 year old unit with a new water heater at a very reasonable cost. It was installed in less than 1.5 hours and the tech guys were very professional and wore a mask. I cant say enough good things about Shumate! They are the folks to call if you need a new Water Heater. read more

An hour later someone called, asked what the problem was, I told him and he informed me they were booked up until the end of the week. Dillan came out, seemed very nice. I Told him we had a home warranty since we just bought the home. My upstairs air was making a very loud sound and we had to shut it off. It was 84 upstairs. They couldn't come for 2 days on a supposed 24 hour service. He literally was up there for two min in attic... told us our motor and wheel was out... he hadn't gone to side of house yet and said our coil was leaking coolant?? That my coil was obsolete. Told me we needed a whole new unit... called Dennis, said "hey man, I have a lead".. kind of a red flag. He waited while we called home warranty people.. home warranty people willing to give us basically nothing since unit is passed their shelf life. At that point i was so stressed because a new unit can be a pretty penny. Had another company come after Schumate.. told me coil not leaking, wheel is fine... and yes you need a new blower/motor. They quoted me 400$ less than Shumate to repair just that item(motor) . So that company left and my dad found the part for a total of 127$ while Shumate was ready for me to spend 5k-10k for a new unit. We never had the sales guy out so not sure the exact amount to put in a new system.. always always get second opinions!! We will have to replace eventually but not today! Thank god. read more

BEWARE PRICE GOUGING: Called Shumate HVAC to repair a 2 year old 3.5 ton Goodman HVAC that stopped cooling during a week of 100+ degree temps. Went several days without AC in 100 degree temps and had to pay the $75 extra for a Saturday service call of $175. Technician immediately knew it would be the capacitor. Here's the problem: technician says you want the basic capacitor for $269 that'll last 2 years or the 5 yr capacitor for $369. I took the better $369 5 yr option. Then later I googled the Goodman 3.5 ton capacitor part and realized the most expensive 60,000 hour replacement capacitor was $59.99 on Amazon. I overpaid $300 for the capacitor and an extra $75 to be robbed on Saturday. If your AC is out buy a new capacitor and plug it in yourself for less than $100 and about 30 minutes. If that's not it take it back. No more gigantic HVAC companies with huge staff, overhead and payroll for me. One experienced AC guy working out of his truck is the only way to avoid this. read more
