Omakase, a Japanese term that translates to "I'll leave it up to the chef," is meant to be a showcase of seasonal specialties. Yet in many Japanese restaurants, I've found that no matter when I revisit and order their omakase, the dishes, from appetizers to sushi and sashimi, all remain the same. Thankfully, this was not the case at Shumi. Here, the chefs truly strive to create edible masterpieces. I had the pleasure of enjoying innovative appetizers along with nigiri that simply melted in my mouth. Shumi's omakase was once priced at $150 per person, but in a thoughtful move to accommodate their customers, they adjusted it to $95 per person without compromising the quality of their fish. I will note that the pieces are smaller, but they still deliver the freshest taste. The staff is exceptionally gracious, dedicated to ensuring a wonderful dining experience. They are quick to replenish your tea or fill your glass as soon as it's half empty. I did, however, find the restaurant a bit chilly, and the music was a little too loud, making it difficult to hear the staff as they described each type of fish. For those who followed Master Chef Kunihiko "Ike" Aikasa from the original Shumi in Somerville, he sold that business before opening this new location in Ridgewood, which has been open since 2017. Here, he has partnered with owner David Seo. The aesthetic of the new restaurant remains clean and bright. In a competitive town like Ridgewood, where locals expect restaurants to bring their A-game, Shumi has obviously stood the test of time. I wish them many more years of excellence. Shumi Leonea has gone NYC upscale, providing an innovative and unique omakase dining experience in NJ. In April 2025, we stumbled on the "soft opening" of their new omakase offering, presented in a dedicated, elegant, 8 seat bar room off of the main dining area. We were lucky enough to be served by both Master Chef Aikasa and his now Sensei, David Seo. I'll not try to explain the many courses that were created, explained and presented by the chefs, but each was striking, across a well-paced evening sitting. I recently had lunch at Shumi with my boss, and unfortunately, it was one of the most disappointing sushi experiences I've had. When we arrived, we asked for a larger table instead of the tiny two-top we were assigned. We were told larger tables were reserved for parties of three or more, despite two women seated next to us occupying a four-person table. After pointing out the inconsistency several times, they reluctantly seated us at a larger table. Things only went downhill from there. Several specialty rolls we wanted were unavailable, including the Toro roll, and we were told they had no tuna at all--even though many items on the menu contain tuna. The rolls we did receive were very small, lacked flavor, and seemed skimpy for the price. Service was equally disappointing. After receiving only two rolls, we waited a long time for the rest of our order, only to have the waiter check his iPad and tell us there were no additional rolls ordered. After I reminded him that we had ordered two more, he checked again and casually said, "Oh, you didn't get those." Since we were still hungry, we ordered more food, but the portions continued to be tiny. The strangest part of the experience came when I told the waiter we wanted to order more because we were still hungry. Instead of simply taking the order, he questioned me about how full I was, asking if I was "50% full." I've never had a server interrogate me about my appetite. By the end of lunch, the bill was $230 for two people at a BYOB restaurant, and we both left still hungry. Between the inconsistent seating policy, missing menu items, tiny portions, service mistakes, and odd interactions, this was not the upscale dining experience I expected. Awful location, I ordered their Sushi deluxe set and the fish was not fresh, tasted freezer-burned, and the rice was falling apart and poorly shaped. The service was poor and slow, very unaccommodating and rude. Solid omakase and definitely a spot where you're going to get some bang for your buck (if you're having the lunch omakase here at least). My wife and I dropped in on a relatively normal Friday afternoon at 12 and, well, in reality, it was anything but a normal day for us because it was our wedding anniversary! We were definitely looking forward to an omakase-style meal because it had been a longgg, longggg time since we had one (or any meal without our kids being present for that matter). The restaurant serves 2 omakase meals, with one being more expensive than the other and, of course, since it was our anniversary we HAD to go all out. We chose the Shumi Omakase, which was actually a very reasonable $110 per person during lunch ($140 for dinner). It came with 5 appetizers and a ridiculous 21 pieces of sushi!!! Rarely are there that many pieces of sushi served during an omakase because you'll be there for 2+ hours, so we absolutely made sure we arrived verrrrrry, verrrry hungry. When we arrived for our reservation (which was not really needed since the restaurant was pretty quiet), we were seated immediately. The waiter who greeted us did not even check for our reservation and was going to sit us at a regular table, but, in my reservation request I had asked to be seated at the bar, which he obliged after we asked if we could sit there instead. The omakase experience here, at least during lunch, was a bit unusual according to our past omakase experience. If anything, I'm not even sure if you can even call it an omakase? There was no interaction at all between customers and the chefs and, unlike typical, popular omakase restaurants, the sushi was brought out 5, 6 pieces at a time on a plate instead of being served the usual 1 at a time by the chefs. Don't get me wrong, all of the omakase sushi was amazingly delicious and so were the tasty appetizers, but there was no feeling of it being an intimate experience. No special attention for sitting at the bar. To be honest, other than seeing the chefs making the sushi for many different orders up close, we might as well have sat at a regular table because none of them paid any attention to us. Overall, we still enjoyed our time here and, like I said, all of the sushi was really fresh and tasty. Each piece of sushi was dressed and set up beautifully, but they were all a bit on the small-ish side and could have used a bit more size. The waiters that served us our sushi all did a great job of explaining what we were eating too. Traffic throughout our 1 hour there was moderate as lunch goers came and went. Reservations definitely were not needed for lunch. At the end, we saw some room for improvement, but our stomachs definitely left pretty happy still. read more

My partner and I have been coming here for a few years now, since discovering it in late 2020. Since then, we've had wonderful experiences and enjoyed Shumi's excellent service, quality, and ambience. This recent visit was no exception, but I did notice a change in menu and I believe certain chefs. Busing is super quick, keeping your table clean and uncluttered. But they will not rush you out!! It's BYO so we brought sake this time and enjoyed it for a bit after finishing our meal. I feel like with the change in menu the quality is starting to slip a bit. Certain rolls that I have always loved are no longer my favorite in favor of others on the menu. This time we tried and loved the fatty tuna crispy rice! For rolls we shared the Ridgewood, Shumi, and Seard Salmon Yellowtail rolls. I noticed the last of these no longer has both fish on each roll and is split half and half. I come to Shumi pretty often - for both omakase and standard menu. Very solid fish and Japanese fare for a restaurant outside of NYC. For appetizers, their agedashi tofu is prepared so nicely. If you're not into the big sushi sets, I would recommend checking out the a la carte menu to just pick and choose the fish you like. No matter what I order, I'll also get two a la carte Otoro sushi or sashimi :) Lovely place to have date night or even to celebrate special occasions. Though you might want to skip out on their ramen. I've ordered the katsu tonkatsu ramen which is pretty good, but nothing to write home about. Service is always nice and attentive. Our table ordered 2 Shumi Omakase along with other dishes for the rest of the party (Mother's Day) and for $95 per person the omakase was the worst we've ever had and we've had many omakases in the past. Each sushi was extremely small and thin and the rice underneath must have been about 1/2" ball. Taste wise they were all subpar. The menu course for the omakase was also very unimpressive and we've never had an omakase where the waiter did not provide verbal explanations of each dish. The first course of the omakase was a miso soup with 2 old tuna rolls inside the soup, half undone. It was as if they were trying to create a dish by just including old left over rolls in a soup and calling it a special soup to be part of an omakase. They would have been better off just bringing a plain miso soup. The tuna roll inside was very fishy/smelly. The omakase started off on the wrong foot. The second dish was the egg soufflé. It had a one small quarter or a moon fish cake that we can buy at the grocery stores. The last dish of the omakase was a bowl of ramen. Again, it's a very unimpressive dish for an omakase at $95/pp. It was just a plain ramen with broth and noodles but it had just a few corn kernels that also made it feel as if they just put left over ingredients to make the dish seem a bit "different." Overall it was an extremely disappointing and upsetting experience. For that price I expected a more high end dish curation as well as higher end taste and service. Service was also very subpar. One of the waitresses was very rude, rushed through clearing the table and was rough when setting down or clearing the table. We were taken aback by such behavior from a restaurant at that price range. Nothing in the menu was cheap or affordable. It was definitely a 3 dollar sign type of restaurant and yet the music was so loud that we had difficulty hearing each other and the servers were not trained for a restaurant that charges so much for their food. My brother surprised me with a birthday dinner at the chef's counter at Shumi, which was truly enjoyable. The restaurant was beautiful, modern, and completely packed, which gave a great first impression. We decided to order the "Regular" Omakase, which was the more affordable ($110 vs $140) and shorter of their two chef-led options. We figured that we could always order some a la carte items if we wanted anything else. Our meal was to include 3 courses of appetizers and 14 pieces of the chef's selection of sushi pieces. The experience started with a mind-blowing soup that included what I believe was a cooked albacore tuna sushi roll. The maki had opened up, releasing its flavorful ingredients into the rich broth. It was so unusual, and we just adored it! Next up was a tofu stew with mushrooms, which could have used more fragrant mushrooms for a richer flavor. Surprisingly, the appetizer courses were separated by a platter of the first few pieces of sushi, including tuna, toro, o toro, salmon, and yellowtail. The fish was very fresh, but the pieces were a bit small. In regards to that plate, the dark pink tuna was our favorite. Then, the chef went back to the appetizers with a scallop tempura, which had a well-seasoned, crispy breading surrounding a perfectly cooked piece of shellfish. Next, it was back to the sushi with an array of different kinds of mackerel with little dollops of various sauces on them. A few pieces were fishier than others, but all were tasty. The final round of sushi included an egg patty, monkfish liver with scallop, monkfish liver with spicy squid, another monkfish liver pair I cannot recall, and a piece of eel. These were clearly the more unusual bites, which was totally fine, but they could have included more variety. At this point, we thought we were done with our meal, but we received a full-sized bowl of vegetable ramen, which was just OK. The noodles were harder than al dente and the included corn kernels were crunchy. I assumed that they had not been steeped enough in the broth, which was also not overly flavorful. It was an interesting end to the experience, which was presented a bit too quickly by the stoic staff. The chef had not said one word to us, and the waitstaff presented each plate uniformly and without much other interaction. Was Shumi's omakase adventure the best I had ever had...no, but it was definitely full of fresh ingredients, creativity, and elegance. read more

Guys, I was super impressed with the amount and quality of sushi here. Placed in a town-like neighborhood that has a great walkability score, the food hit the spot. When we walked in, the space was half full and they sat us at the sushi bar. It was pretty cool to be able to sit up close and watch the chefs as they plated their sushi masterpieces. We ordered several different dishes but I didn't have a chance to take a pic of those - they were SO yummy that we dove in. I think most of us know what that feels like. :) The sushi and sashimi deluxe was A LOT and the additional Salmon Poke Tartare and Chefs Special Bluefin Otoro Roll was **chefs kiss**. Although the Otoro roll was EXTREMELY delicious and refreshing, a couple of us favored the salmon poke tartare because of the savory flavor. Highly recommend trying both at least once though! I would have preferred some more tea options but that's ok. The food more than compensated for the lack of beverages. The service was half and half. One of the servers seem to be in a rush to clear our plates the moment we had put our utensils down, which, perhaps I'm too unrefined but I could use a couple of minutes before someone reaches over my shoulder to grab my plate. But the water was kept full by another server and we enjoyed all of our dishes as well as the ambience. 9/10 would recommend and definitely want to try again with different servers. The MasterChef is Japanese and generally is only one day in ridgewood, the rest of the time in Leonia. My only gripe was that there were tablets blocking the view from some angles. The restaurant itself was consistently busy. The waiters described every dish that was brought over down to every detail. The fish was super fresh and paired very nicely with a certain sauce. Unfortunately, there were so many dishes, I could not remember all the names. Looking back at the pictures has me wanting to go back for more. You'll definitely leave on a full stomach and well worth the price. It's too bad, I used to really like this spot- but our last experience with management and staff was really chaotic, and frankly a little embarrassing It was my parents' anniversary so we made a reservation for us and their friends pretty early on. We got a call that there would be a time limit of 1 hr and 45 mins.. which is plenty of time and we were okay with it. When we showed up, the host and the waiter kept reminding and rushing us! We finished in like 45 mins with an hour to spare but everyone was hovering over us like hawks. Later on, there was a moment when it was clear everyone had ordered a separate dish and one waiter combined two of the Shumi rolls. It was so baffling, but the waiter did do a good job of going back and handling that. Also a heads up- most of the waiters and hosts are these young kids that don't really look like they know what they're doing haha. On the other hand, I liked my sushi deluxe but as the other reviewers said - the nigiri sizes are noticeably small. I remember getting pretty hungry later on. While we enjoyed the sushi appetizer (the Salmon Mozzarella Roll) and my boyfriend enjoyed his 3-Course Dinner Special (The Salmon Teriyaki Bowl was his entree), the ramen was just ok. The pork was dry and there was too much ginger in the broth. It almost made it spicy at times. While I'm typically a fan of spice, this was even too much for me. I also am not the biggest fan of corn in my ramen personally, and this bowl had a bit much for my taste. Overall, this ramen was unimpressive. The service was pretty good--the staff was attentive and would regularly come to refill our waters. Decided to do takeaway omakase deluxe (two), unagidon, and the 3 course dinner special m with salmon teriyaki and was super impressed by their packaging. There were a few downsides to take away: I was told that the price of the omakase deluxe is now $140, and that while there are four additional sides that comes with the meal, they would only be giving us 3 because the egg custard could not be packed to go; no change in price and no substitution :/ Aside from that, wow the amount of packaging that goes into all this is incredible! I really did appreciate it all, even though I had to spend a bit of time piecing together what items went with which food. The sushi was fresh and I was particularly impressed with the quality and texture of the sushi rice. (I think - again we had to guess which went with what) Omakase deluxe ultimately came with 21 assorted pieces - all great except the sweet egg sushi, which I always think is a cop out, ramen, one meat type sushi, miso soup, a scallop on top of eggplant, hamachi collar (which was dry) and three pieces of tuna sushi. The unagidon was simple but good and not too overly sweet like other places. The 3 course dinner came with salad, miso soup, assorted sushi, teriyaki salmon with veggies in a bowl. A fun take away experience that no doubt would be different eating at the restaurant but I appreciate that we can try it this way safely at home. read more

This must be a joke, right? We just moved to town and decided to go to shumi for an omakase date night and it was the worst "omakase" I've ever had in my life. Even the quick $75 omakase joints in NYC are heaps better. And this is me walking in with 0 NYC omakase expectations. I just wanted fresh fish. Nothing had a wow factor and this place ruined so many traditional Japanese dishes. 1) miso soup - why in the WORLD did the put cut up minced toro sushi IN the soup? That was so gross. Imagine your child throwing all your sushi rolls from takeout into a big pot of miso soup for you to drink. Sounds good? I hope not. 2) chawanmushi/Japanese steamed egg - listen, if you are going to do "omakases", don't ruin such a delicate dish and turn it into a fast food joint egg. The chawanmushi was decent until I got to the bottom and found a piece of naruto in there. You don't do that. 3) the sushi pieces - so many repeats and the slices and amount of rice were the smallest I've seen. The fish was so thin that I couldn't feel any of that buttery silky fish texture. I give them props for fresh fish. But I also don't need 3 different monk fish pieces with random sprinkles of seasonings on top. No standard ikura, no uni (except for the pinky pinch w the wagyu). Sad. 4) the ramen people rave about? Ok, please go to mitsuwa, hmart, 99 ranch, whatever ok? And you will find better instant ramen. The broth literally tastes like my Nissan instant ramen at home and it took them almost 40 minutes to bring this last joke of a course out. And and with the sliced Naruto's - This is not what you put into such a marked up "omakase" meal. One of the worst meals I've had. read more

We enjoyed the appetizers octopus legs and dragon balls. The Shumi ramen's broth was good but the pork tasted average. The sushi rolls were smaller in size. Though I liked the spicy dragon and shumi rolls, but the shrimp tempura roll was sort of plain. We also had to wait for an hour to get the Ramen dish of Omakase. Even though we pointed it out, we were told the kitchen is backed up, and there was no compensation for such unreasonable delay. We didn't even get a break on one of the green tea pot. Others with me had the special omakase ($140), but I did not. This is not a traditional omakase where the chef serves you. The server will bring out the plates one-by-one, and some will tell you about the dish (definitely about the sushi plates!) but others won't. It's less of an omakase and more of a five-or-so-course menu. If you're looking for a traditional omakase experience, you won't find it here. The course was still delicious, with ~21 pieces of sushi as well as miso soup, ramen, and grilled fish included in the experience. I personally chose the chef's choice chirashi ($45). Each fish had around 3 pieces, some with only 1 or 2 but were different (i.e. raw shrimp). I enjoyed eating at a slower pace while others had the omakase, and was full by the end. The fish pieces were fresh and had a great flavor profile. Like most sushi places, this restaurant is on the more expensive side, but good and high-quality. read more

4.5/5 Easily made a reservation for the bar to experience the Omakase which has been raved about on multiple forums. The owner and head chef, David, prepared each dish for us and was friendly enough to describe each course in detail. For the price, you cannot find a better value for the quality and amount of fish. Some of the dishes in the later half of the course are similar with multiple types of white fish that differ only in name with similar garnishes and sauces applied. The pace at which you are served is also quite fast. He stated because it was not busy he would do a single piece at a time (the traditional omakase way) as opposed to a plate of 4-5 pieces at a time, however it still felt a tad rushed as you would not get to even clean your fingers before two or three pieces would be prepared and waiting on your plate. Plenty of servers to help clear dishes promptly, everyone is professional and the restaurant is very clean. Byob, so remember to bring you're own sake or beer. There is a bottle king 6 mins down the road if you forget. Located in a very cute downtown strip, great area, easy street parking, plenty of police around to make it very safe.
