The food at Siamese Bay is very good. It compares well with food I've had in Thailand. While every dish I've tried is good, I think the dumplings and the green curry are especially delicious as is the chili lime salad dressing. The host and owner, Sam, is attentive and aims to please. It is definitely one of the best, if not the best, Thai restaurant in the Monterey area. The dining room is artfully decorated with traditional Thai wood carvings and statues, all presented in a colorful modern design making for an attractive dining room in which to enjoy the delicious food. We were visiting Monterey and chose this place because it was a short walk from our hotel room, Yelp maps took us to the Trader Joe's lot behind the actual restaurant but when we were finally able to find it using Google, we could tell it was definitely a 'locals' spot and were pleasantly surprised because those places always seem to have the best food! The restaurant was very clean and welcoming and the service was great. We ordered the deep fried spring rolls, the beef thai fried rice and beef pad see-ew which ALL looked super appetizing and the flavor was right on point!! Wasn't sure about this place from previous reviews but was pleasantly surprised at how good the food was. Pad Thai was spot on, and the seafood "boat" (#68) was delicious. Everything was very fresh with just the right amount of spice. If your palate is used to heavy spices, this place probably isn't for you. Our family of 6 has been eating at Siamese Bay for decades, as have so many locals on the Monterey Peninsula. The food is outstanding! Every dish is different and each one offers so much flavor, from tangy salads (Thai Chicken and Spicy Shrimp are our favorites) to rich curries (Panang Chicken, Kai Curry, Curry Noodles). Bangkok Duck is bursting with sweet/spicy flavor and the duck meat is always tender and juicy with crispy skin. Garlic Broccoli - yum! Pad Woon Sen noodles are a savory treat. Do not go here! Hands down the worst Thai food I've ever had. The Pad Thai was flavorless and the noodles were stuck together in a giant blob. The hot and sour soup just tasted like lemon juice with sliced mushrooms floating in it. And the sweet and sour chicken was dry and the sauce tasted like broccoli and celery juice. Location of restaurant is great but I can't say the same for food and service. We got there an hour before they closed, so plenty of time to order and eat. The whole time though I felt like our waiter (who I think was the owner) just wanted to get rid of us so they could close. We definitely got the sense that our business was not appreciated. I ordered the spicy mint noodles, which were supposed to include mint leaves, and they came with basil leaves. I asked our waiter and he said "oh yeah, we make our mint noodles with basil." After I pointed out that he should change the description on the menu, he offered to add mint leaves to my dish but I told him to forget it. So we were all gung ho for this. The food was terrible! We both were so sick after! It made for a miserable afternoon. We were shocked. My co-worker and I were craving Thai so we decided to venture to Siamese Bay for a quick lunch. Generally, I am not a fan of buffets due to the lack of quality control for you never know how long the food has been sitting out and collecting bacteria. However, buffets are great for allowing a person to sample a variety of dishes without paying too much. In the pursuit of culinary adventures one may have to endure the consequences of suffering from stomach problems. The lunch buffet at Siamese Bay was a pleasant surprise. The serving portions were smaller than most places which shows that they constant are replenishing their stock as it runs low. Their were some decent flavor profiles characteristic of traditional Thai food. A good blend of sweet/spicy/sour. As mentioned before, I have never gone to a bad Thai restaurant. In that, I mean the food is always delicious. It was delicious here too... we got Siamese curry (yellow curry), tom kah kai, pad thai, veggie spring rolls, chicken skewers and rice. The yellow curry didn't have pre-cut chicken which was a bit of a hassle, but it was well flavored, moist and perfectly cooked which made up for it. The soup (tom kah kai) had way too many mushrooms... though my family likes mushrooms so it was good to them. Also, my sisters were complaining the consistency of the soup was too powdery (but I had no problem with that). The part I took two stars away for was the gratuity. 18% gratuity for a 6 person group is not so surprising but the way they went about it was very deceptive and rather rude. They handed us a sloppily and almost illegibly written check with abbreviations and such where nothing was labeled, not even tax. We tried calculating out the total ourselves (including tax) and came up with a total about 11 or 12 bucks lower than the one they had calculated. I mean if you are going to go tack on $11-12 tip you should be clear about it. Most people don't study the receipt or even try to do the math, they just hand over their credit card. And when the server comes back with the credit card receipt it has a line for tip. Like, really? You already added it on without telling us or marking it clear and you leave a spot for tip in case the customer didn't pay attention the first time? The food is overpriced and of low quality (i.e. $16 for a fried fillet of fish), but unfortunately, this was not the worst of our experience. Neither my husband nor I liked the entrees we ordered, so after consuming only one bite we informed our waitress. She became defensive and did not offer to exchange our food with a different dish, so we asked for the check. To our dismay, they did not remove the entrees from the bill, and we had to pay $38 for food we did not consume. The owners of this restaurant appear to be more focused on the immediate financial transaction than providing good customer service. If they were better business people, they would realize the long-term financial advantages of, at minimum, meeting the customer's expectations. If you choose to eat at this restaurant, make sure you know you will like what you order, because once the order is placed, you're stuck with it. read more

The one star does not reflect the service and especially not the food, which is beyond good. Siamese Bay had a promotion going with a website advertising $50 off when you spend $100. After a meal with the family, the owner told us they could not honor the coupon. He pointed to a tiny sign in the window. He attempted to tell us the story of why they could not accept the coupon, but the fact is we bought the coupon an hour before we got there, and spent well over $145. Ownership should've honored the coupon and stop trying to blame the 3rd party website. The small sign in the window was impossible to see at night. In my opinion, this restaurant owes us $50. On a recent visit to my old hometown, a friend took me to Siamese Bay. Let me start by saying if my friend had not been 87 years old I'd have gotten up and walked out before ordering. She has seafood allergies and simply requested that the utensils used for seafood not be used for her chicken dish. While there may have been a slight language barrier, that does not account for the five minute conversation required to get the point across. I mean, you work in a Restaurant for Pete's sake--you must have Some idea.... We both ordered the Siamese Barbecue Chicken. I swear they barbecued it in Siam and sent it regular post to the restaurant. It was by far the driest chicken I've ever had in my life. Completely inedible. I think my friend may not have wanted to complain because I was with her. If I'd been alone there is no way I would have paid for this meal. Did I say meal? What I mean is Pile Of Chicken On Plate. That's it. With a cabbage carrot garnish. She took her chicken home to her dog (I hope he's okay!) and I just left mine. There was one other customer while I was there--which was dinnertime on a Saturday night. The (owner?) man was lamenting the lack of business. This was my first time eating Thai food since my visit to Thailand in January. I had the lunch buffet ($8.95 and doesn't include a drink, just water) and found the food to be okay - definitely not authentic Thai. However, I really didn't expect authentic Thai food in a buffet so I wasn't too disappointed in that. I did appreciate the sign on the sneeze guard in the buffet line that warned diners of a $2 charge for any food left on their plates. I've been to too many buffets where I see people waste food. Two things disappointed me: 1) They allowed people to re-use their dishes when going back for more food on the buffet line. Someone in my party asked the staff if we should re-use our dishes and we were told that it didn't matter. Allowing people to re-use their dishes in a buffet situation is unhygienic. 2) They charged an 18% service charge just because we were a large group even though we all chose the buffet. I don't mind paying for good service but when I have to pay someone else for the privilege of serving myself, that just isn't right. Siamese Bay Restaurant got the best reviews of all the places in my area, so I decided to check it out. It was a Monday, they had the lunch buffet out and were pretty busy. It took a while to get anyones attention, and when I did they didn't welcome me in Thai, boo. I really don't like buffets. I find the food to usually be bland, cold and unfulfilling so I skipped that. Instead I ordered coconut soup, thai basil chicken and a thai iced tea. I've spent quite a bit of time in Thailand and I was really really hoping for excellence. Unfortunately, at least on this occasion the food was no more than average. The chicken was overcooked, just so slightly so that it lost a good portion of its moisture. The dish included carrots - I don't think I've ever seen carrots in Thailand. It was strange. The soup was a thicker consistency that is typical for coconut soup. The iced tea was good - but how can you go wrong with condensed milk?! All in all, I think this restaurant has modified its palette to suit most dinner, hence the high reviews. If you really are searching for something authentic and you're in a picky mood, this probably won't be the place for you. read more
