Restaurant smelled overwhelmingly like raw meat. Probably should only get Szechuan food here. Cumin lamb was almost as good as nyc

I was so excited to order take out here based on the reviews. I purchased the Szechuan beef noodle soup and was very disappointed. The beef was only fat and the noodles looked like simple spaghetti you purchase from the grocery store. There were no spices, much flavor, or any veggies. The customer service when picking up my food was great but definitely do not order this dish.

I have some great friends, and this outing proved just that. I planned a Sunday field trip,…read moresomething I'd like to implement monthly, to the African American Museum for the Ruth E. Carter Afro futurism in Costume Design exhibition (Sinners, Wakanda Forever, etc.). And what do you need on a field trip? Lunch! We looked at the options around us, considered dietary restrictions, and decided Penang was the place for us. And they did not disappoint! Service was great... We were immediately seated. The weather was a bit chilly, and when we requested a new space away from the door, we were accommodated without incident. When I tell you the roti with curry changed my life?? I could eat that everyday and not get tired of it?! It's sooo perfect! Sheesh! We ordered a lot of different dishes, so we kind of shared around the table, leaving nothing to be desired. The green curry seafood in clay pot was delicious! I mean, every variation of curry I tasted was somehow the best curry. Haha The mango fish was sooo good! The fried vegetable dumplings were amazing. I will surely be back. I don't even care if I have to get it delivered, I will be enjoying this food again!

The food quality has noticeably gone downhill over the past few months. To start, my party of four asked for a pot of hot tea. The server told us it would be $5, which is fine--especially since it was freezing outside and the restaurant itself was cold (the heat didn't seem to be on). But near the middle of the meal, I asked for a refill (literally just more hot water), and the server came back with the owner/manager and said it would be another $5. That's ridiculous. The tea is already made--charging another $5 for hot water is wild. The service didn't help either. The server was pretty stoic, and the whole interaction felt awkward, especially while I was trying to order off a QR code menu that had zero descriptions of the dishes. That lack of explanation definitely caused issues. For example, we ordered the Singapore rice noodles expecting something curry-based, but it tasted like a sweet-and-sour ketchup sauce instead. Not good--and totally avoidable if the menu actually explained what the dish was. As for the food, the roti canai was disappointing. The curry was watered down and lacked flavor compared to previous visits, though I'll give credit where it's due--the roti itself was nicely toasted. I don't know what changed, but something clearly did, and it feels like a leadership issue. Overall, this visit was really underwhelming, and I won't be coming back anytime soon unless things seriously turn around here.

They had this amazing Malaysian pulled milk tea called Teh Tarik and Kaya Toast. The Teg Tarik was sweet but not too sweet. It was interested how they stirred the tea similar to in India where they move it from one container to another in a juggling type fashion. The Kaya Toast was crispy and had this amazing coconut custard in the middle.

Kampar is close to home, so it's been on our list for a while, especially since our Malaysian cuisine experience is scant. We easily made reservations with friends for a Friday night. The reservation process is a little confusing since you can make res for downstairs or upstairs; the downstairs area features rotating chefs and their cuisines vs the upstairs area is true Kampar. We were happy to dine in the upstairs dining room, which had great ambience and vibes. It was dark and moody with simple candles and artwork around, plus a chill playlist. Our server was helpful in walking us through the menu and providing suggestions on number of dishes, etc. We started off with drinks. I love how their menu was separated into various types of drinks (light & bright, spirit forward, fun & fundamental, etc.), and I was blown away by all the unique pairings in each drink. It was a tough decision, but I opted for the Karbonat, which featured beet, sweet potato, and mandarin flavors - it was so fun and delicious! For round 2, I went for the coconut clarified whiskey tarik, loving the inclusion of banana leaf and Japanese vermouth. All my dining partners also really enjoyed their drinks, having a mixture of cocktails and wines / beers (something for everyone!). For eats, we debated just getting the Kenduri, where the chef simply cooks for you, vs ordering on our own. We ultimately decided to choose our own adventure, ordering the goat rendang, sayur goreng, ayam goreng berempah, and chili pan mee to split. We each got our own nasi lamak to soak up all the goodies. Every dish was beautifully crafted with quality ingredients and was so delicious. I lvoed the presentation of the nasi lamak, and my standout dishes were the rendang and ayam goreng berempah (a surprise hit). We all enjoyed each dish, and we were sufficiently full with this shared order (too stuffed for dessert, though). The price is reasonable - we spent less with our method of ordering than we would have with getting the tasting menu. The cocktails were a little on the pricier side, but given the uniqueness of the drinks, I get it. Kampar did not disappoint, and it was a great meal to share with friends. I was (and still am) shocked to hear about the devastating fire and prolonged impact, so I am keeping my eyes peeled to hear about their hopefully soon reopening!

I was WOWED by the shrimp with lady fingers (okra), seamless service (reminiscent of a well-oiled machine), and an unexpectedly large interior. --- I dined as a party of two for lunch on Sunday. When we first entered, we were shocked at just how large the interior of Banana Leaf was as compared to the exterior. It is also decorated very fun inside. We ordered the mama's chicken, shrimp with lady fingers, and homemade roti canai. Just a note that the most updated menu is online instead of the photos here. (Also rice is not included with the entrées, but needs to be ordered separately.) (1) Shrimp with Lady Fingers- I would come back for just this again and again. It was not too salty, and it was very flavorful (just the right amount of fishy), and the okra was cooked just perfectly. I am a little bias as an okra fan, but I LOVED this dish. My only issue is that the shrimp wasn't deveined. (2) Homemade Roti Canai- The roti was very flaky and had an excellent texture. I guess it's no surprise that it's the biggest thing advertised on the menu. The curry was pretty standard that came with it. It was just a little strange to me that the roti canai was completely cold when it came out. (3) Mama's Chicken- The chicken was dry for us, probably as a result of the smaller pieces being fried. Overall, it was pretty OK, but we wouldn't order this again. The service was excellent- food was quick to come out & anytime we finished a dish, needed water, or needed the check, the servers were at the table before we had to say anything. Totally streamlined!

We got seated immediately and they had a variety of Malaysian items on the menu that had a little of everything and ones similar to other Asian cuisine dishes. Roti Canai - The piece of roti was huge, a big portion for 2 people which we enjoyed. The curry was light and a little sweet paired with the thin and chewy roti. Pad Thai - A very classic dish. It was mildly spicy which gave a good kick and it had the classic flavors being sour, sweet, savory and nutty at the same time. The noodles were a nice texture with the crunchier bean sprouts, the tender shrimp and chewy tofu. We also tried the Hainanese Chicken which was a bit different than what we were used to but it was still tender and soft. A solid place for dinner in the Chinatown area if you're wanting to get some different dishes.

Pasar Malam lives up to the stellar food of its predecessor with service that is much better than the former. On a Saturday evening, there were several patrons. We ordered Thai chicken lettuce wraps for an appetizer. For main entrees the Drunken Noodle and Kari Mee with Redang Chicken. Everything was delicious, flavorful and plentiful in portion size. The menu seemed similar to Penang. However they have added bubble teas and more drinks. Prices were very reasonable. The interior was not as dark. Perhaps, the addition of more overhead lights of just some fresh paint. I will definitely be back to try the lunch specials. Note: credit card service charge added to bill.

We especially enjoyed this taro vegetable dish we ordered - the taro comes in a deep fried ring shape surrounding all the veggies and shrimp. The drunken noodle was also really good - really nice sized shrimp in their dishes. The Hainan chicken (they call it PM chicken) is not as flavorful as other places we've had this at. I wouldn't order the curry beef next time - it's a bowl of curry sauce (although delicious) with a few pieces of beef stew; you really need it eat it with a bowl of rice and we're trying to reduce our carb intake. Overall good service. And also BYOB!

We ordered the sarang burong, seafood scramble egg chow fun, hainanese chicken over rice and the roti canai. The roti canai came out quick. The roti was cold but crispy. Guess it was just sitting there and not freshly made. Thankfully the curry dip was hot. The sarang burong came out next and it was very bland. No flavor what so ever. It was just stir fried chicken shrimp and veggies topped with cashews. Wish it was flavorful. Salt would have been nice or some sort of Malaysian flavor. The fried taro was cold also. Guess it was just sitting around til someone orders it. The hainanese chicken was also bland. Not even the dark soy sauce or the water downed hot sauce on side could have saved it. Only thing flavorful was the chicken flavored rice. The seafood scramble egg chow fun was the saving grace. Flavorful and tasty. Don't think I will come back and stick with going to West New Malaysia from now on.
