The food, service & the surroundings was wonderful. Our server was wonderful, friendly & made us feel so welcome. The food came out hot & steamy every time. It was not a long wait & it's a BYOB & perfect for girl's night out or a date night. I will be back very soon.

I make it a point to dine here whenever I visit since it has one of my favorite dishes in Philadelphia! I used to live in West Philly and I always got the naam lettuce wraps; they're traditionally made with minced pork but they have a vegan version that is AMAZING. And everything else on the menu is also great. I love that it is BYOB. The dining area is bigger than it looks since it extends to the back, but you do often need to make a reservation during peak times. Parking in the area can be difficult, especially right outside on Baltimore avenue.

I've been coming to Vientiane for YEARS! My mom was Thai and used to bring me when I was a child when they only had space for about 5-6 tables! They've grown so much but the staples have remained the same, thank goodness. My mom passed away a few years ago, but whenever I come here I feel a sense of nostalgia for the flavors I had as a kid. My personal favorites every time I come are the homemade Laotian sausages and the beef jerky with sticky rice!

    Penang curry and pad Thai

So my friend and I went to this restaurant at my suggestion bc I saw that it had good reviews, and we had a meeting to go to after dinner that was close by. We ordered the Penang curry with beef and the pad thai with chicken to share. The Penang curry had a good peanutty flavor and creamy consistency, but the beef itself was very tough, which made it pretty unappetizing to be honest. The pad thai didn't have a strong sour tamarind flavor either. The chicken in it wasn't necessarily juicy either, but it wasn't as hard or dry as the beef in the curry. I was a bit disappointed, given that the food came out to around $50 with tip. I will not be coming back.

Vientiane is another of several restaurants that was popular among my classmates when I was in college that I never got around to trying. So of course it's another restaurant that my partner was very interested in, so we recently made it one of our pandemic dinner takeout selections. The menu is quite extensive and vegetarian-friendly, and we both liked our entrees so much that this is definitely being added to our list of West philly restaurants to return to. I decided to go with a Laotian dish that I was unfamiliar with, Lad Na with tofu, while my partner went with one of his Thai favorites, Pad Kee Mao (also with tofu). While the containers were the same and looked similarly filled, the La Na is a MUCH bigger portion, even the half portion I ate was quite generous. And so good! The rice noodles were kind of sticking together, but still tasted great, the tofu was perfect- fried just to the point of creating that perfect crisp edge without being TOO fried - the brocolli greens were a good complement, and the sauce was spicy and flavorful. I was worried it might be too sweet but it wasn't at all. My partner really liked his Pad Kee Mao too, and was able to finish the smaller portion in a single sitting. While the prices are a bit higher than we're used to, the quality and portions make them quite reasonable (even without considering the Baltimore Ave markup). Looking forward to trying something new next time!

Bring Cash! First time having Laotian food, and I love it. This has quickly shot up to one of my go-tos, because of its location near University city, and its absolutely delicious array of food. I had the Sticky Tamarind and the Penaeng Curry, and both were super delicious. Not only does Vientiane provide great food, but it also has so many gluten free and vegan options. Definitely recommend for anyone living nearby.

The food was quite good, but it didn't live up to my expectations unfortunately. I would have liked if they called the foods by more specific names to see which lao or thai foods they are making, because I couldn't tell which soup the King Soup was trying to be (it was still not bad, could have been spicier and more flavorful) and the jerky was a bit dry. My friend also ordered a curry that honestly just looked like watery curried vegetables, so I'm glad I got the soup at least. The service was nice though, and they didn't rush me and my friend out even though we stayed till practically closing.

Got delivery from Uber eats from Vientiane tonight. The city is shut down this thanksgiving eve, so it was so comforting to get delivery from this consistent restaurant and eat such delicious food. I had the Penang curry with chicken and sticky rice.. silky, peanut-y, spicy...I ordered a combination so it came with the vegetarian naam salad. So delicious! My kid ordered the Kings soup with tofu. So tasty and comforting! Try this place! They've been putting out delicious, consistent food since 2000 when they were a secret restaurant just two streets over from me. They always deliver great food!

Curry rich in flavor - a little too much in my opinion. Came with a red thai chili pepper on top so a little kick Head on shrimp - a must get for the apps. No picking required. Eat it full on. I never ate head of shrimp prior. No regrets and would go for multiple Banh Chow Salad - a little too much mint, the dressing is really tangy which I really enjoyed Khao soi noodles - rich, creamy. Not overpowering. Nice crunch from the fried ramen and has a hint of spicyness that pleasant and not overbearing. Duck noodles - cold noodles, strong in pb. Not something I necessarily enjoyed All star fried rice - Seafood cooked nicely, it has 2 pieces of scallops and one uni on top. Flavorful. Like the flavors. The sauce on the side isnt spicy at all - more like a sweet chili. Best main of the bunch I tried. Would get again

After hearing so much about MAWN, we decided to celebrate our anniversary here. Thank God we were…read moreable to get a reservation because this place absolutely lived up to the hype. From the food to the service, every part of the experience felt thoughtful, intentional, and genuinely memorable. It's the kind of restaurant that reminds you why dining out can be so special. The space itself is cozy, intimate, and full of character. The unique design creates a warm, welcoming atmosphere that makes you want to settle in and enjoy every course rather than rush through the meal. The service deserves every bit of a 10/10. All of the servers were incredibly attentive, knowledgeable, and passionate about the menu. Since several dishes and ingredients were unfamiliar to us, they took the time to explain each one, answer our questions, and offer recommendations without making us feel rushed. That guidance gave us the confidence to step outside of our comfort zone, and every recommendation paid off. We ordered the Mawn Noodle Soup, Grilled Saht Koh, Mahope Samut, Steak and Prohok, Thai Crab Fried Rice, and ended the evening with the Funnel Cake. Every dish was beautifully plated and packed with bold, balanced flavors. The Steak and Prohok was refreshing and full of flavor in every bite. The Grilled Saht Koh had a perfect char and was cooked beautifully. The Mahope Samut was exceptional, with tender, perfectly seared scallops. Both this and the Saht Koh were perfect starters. The Mawn Noodle Soup was incredibly comforting with layers of flavor and easily one of the highlights of the meal. The Thai Crab Fried Rice was another standout--light, fragrant, and loaded with fresh crab, making it much more than just a side dish. And somehow, after such an incredible meal, the Funnel Cake still managed to steal the show. It was the perfect ending: crisp, indulgent, and not overly sweet. It's easy to see why MAWN has earned such a loyal following. Exceptional hospitality, creative dishes that are executed with precision, and an atmosphere that feels both relaxed and special make this one of the best dining experiences I've had in Philadelphia. We'll absolutely be back, and next time, I'll be ordering the dishes we loved while making room to explore even more of the menu!

Things will definitely get a lot busier as the season goes on. Frankly you can't really go wrong with anything here, so I just wanted to leave some best practices as someone who's iterated a few times here: - If getting skewered meat/papaya salad, just get it at whichever booth has the shortest line with what you want (and if you don't want anything in particular, just hop in the shortest line). There might be a slight difference between stands, but since it's so common, you can't really go wrong with anyone who sells. - Stir Fry Noodle Lady! Grab the chive cakes on the side too. - Skip the sugar cane and go for the simpler drinks on the menu. Passionfruit, lime honey, and things like that will be much more refreshing. - Bring a picnic blanket, as there's plenty of space to gather and eat adjacent to the booths, and you'll avoid eating on your feet all the time. Make sure to bring cash! Venmo/card is beginning to be accepted but may have a surcharge.
