I am so pleased with my visit to Side Show! I got a groupon for an hr session. I called to set up my appt, telling them about the Groupon. Two days later I got a text from Pin to schedule the session. I sent him about 6 inspiration pics to help. I won't lie, at first he didn't completely get the idea (butterflies mingling probably wasn't the best description), but then as he probed more on why and I spoke more on the inspiration, he got it! I wanted it small, but sharp, bright and detailed. He wanted to be sure I had realistic expectations for such a task, and was very thorough with showing me what he could and couldn't do. My wife and two sisters decided we all wanted tattoos. Everywhere we went was too expensive so we decided to go to the beach and see if we could find a good tattoo place that was reasonably priced. We saw this jewel on Yelp and stopped by. Next thing you know, we got 6 tattoos. Pin was awesome (Pin is our tattoo artist name). He was professional and kind. The vibes were nice. He was playing music jams in the background, had a restroom for customers, had an iPhone charger so you could charge while you waited and he was very conversational with us. It was most of our first times getting a tattoo, and he made us feel comfortable and his artistic skills were on point and clean. I plan to get another tattoo and this is where I will be going. My only tip is to bring cash. The ATM machine is $5 for a withdrawal. Also, if you like his work, don't be afraid to tip. I wanted a simple heart on my finger. The artist I got couldn't even draw a heart and after 4 tries I drew it for him. I should've just stopped then but I told myself he knew what he was doing and let him do it. My friend asked him how long he's been tattooing and he rudely told her to 'give him a second' and covered my finger. At first look, the heart was uneven and one of the sides was a squiggle. I recently traveled to Los Angeles for a book signing and before leaving was purchasing a few Groupons for me and my friend to use while there. I saw the one for Sideshow and thought it would be a great way to remember this trip...plus, there were two tats I'd been dying to get for a few years. After picking my friend up from the airport, we headed to Venice Beach. Parking is easy and right around the corner in an underground garage. When we went in, it turned out the person I'd been emailing with had failed to tell them I was coming. But since we were on such a tight schedule with the singing, they fit me in. Christian did my artwork and he had such beautiful tattoos himself. he is an artist extraordinaire and the body art came out exactly as I wanted and pictured in my head. He was so friendly, personable and a gentleman. He kept checking to see if I was okay and to make sure everything was going exactly as I wanted it. The conversation was excellent and the three of us all learned something about the other. A tattoo is a spiritual experience as it usually marks something important in your life. This was to celebrate my writing and finally publishing books...and the experience of this special signing where I got to meet one of my best author friends for the first time. I asked if they sterilize the needles and was informed they are thrown away after use with the other piece being sterilized, so it was a very clean and safe place to get inked. Someone said the guys here make you feel like you've known them for years and that is so true. We had a great time, and I ended up with my two favorite of my five tattoos. I hope I get to go back and see my friend in California in a couple of years or so, and when I return I plan to visit Sideshow again and mark that trip with a new tattoo by Christian again! When I got married in 2013, my mother and husband and bridesmaids prevailed on me to remove the hoop earring from my cartilage, as it didn't quite go with everything else I was wearing. I promptly misplaced the earring and failed to replace it, as it's weirdly difficult to cram any old stud through that hole. At some point in the last two and a half years, I let the hole close out of sheer laziness. I missed that piercing, though, and wanted to redo it when I got the chance. That chance came during a walk along the Venice Beach Boardwalk last week, when Sideshow Tattoo presented itself out of the clusters of weed doctors and T-shirt shops. I walked in and Zulema helped me immediately. I told her what I wanted, and she took me in back and repierced my cartilage, in the exact place it had been pierced before. She was very friendly, professional, and efficient, and the process was sterile and painless. I was nervous that it would hurt, but it was just a quick clean shove of a needle, almost nothing at all. It cost $35 before tip, and included the earring--a stud this time. The whole thing took about five minutes, in and out. I think I'm probably done with piercings at this point (I have six in my ears and am not about to start on the rest of my body at age thirty), but I'd definitely recommend Sideshow if you're looking to get something done. And if you're checking Yelp because you're walking along the boardwalk with a vague impulse to mutilate your body, well, you certainly have my blessing. read more

As someone who is really picky about where she goes to get a tattoo I decided to keep an open mind as I went to check out a tattoo show on the boardwalk of Venice. It's a small, simple shop, but these guys have sanitary practices. I started the process of getting a memorial tattoo in honor of my niece a little over a month ago with Jesus. From day one he was extremely accommodating especially in terms of me testing a couple of placements. Then on the day he worked with me with no attitude when I wanted to tweak my design a couple of times. I was really nervous about asking him to change up his whole initial design because I felt that I might be wasting his time, but hey this is something that is permanent and you have to be 100% about the design. He quickly sketched up something that I totally fell in love with and again we spent our time with size and placement. I never felt like I was in a rush to make a decision with Jesus. We finally get to the tattoo part, and he made sure to ask me if I was doing ok and gave me breaks when I needed it. The tattoo itself didnt hurt more than expected, and it healed quite spectacularly. Most of that has to do with the artist's technique coupled with the aftercare. I highly recommend Jesus and the shop altogether. All the guys there are cool. I will definiately come back for my sixth one :) read more

I got my second tattoo at SideShow yesterday. The first was actually last August when I was moving up north and my friend and I got matching tattoos. I've been wanting another tattoo for a long time and I was in the area. Sadly, my man Jesus was not there, but everyone who was made me just as happy as the first time. My tattoo was in a more painful place, but I never felt uncomfortable or disrespected (I've felt that way in other tattoo shops.) I always feel comfortable and confident in SideShow and I cannot wait to move back down towards the area soon so I can get more tattoos from these lovely people. Well for starters it's on Venice beach, who wouldn't love getting a tattoo beachfront on a beautiful day? The guys are super sweet there, and I think their website may say appointment only but they will take you if they're free. I saw they were having a special on Groupon which is why I chose the shop. I called and Chris answered the phone and told me I didn't have to buy it through Groupon, it was okay to just come in and they would honor the price anyway. I like that I was able to come in the same day and have my tattoo drawn and done in a CLEAN and COMFORTABLE environment. Jesus did my tattoo and he was very cool.
