This place has a GREAT ambiance and feel to it, with twinkle lighting and framed photos of Sinatra and others on the wall, you feel comfortable and relaxed dinning here. Our bartender, Paul was attentive and friendly and mixed an awesome margarita. My wife and I tried the Jamaican Jerked Chicken Skewer appetizer and it was delicious with just the right amount of spices to give it some zing! The fact that they have a cigar bar attached to it with a separate entrance only makes it a win win for me. Restaurant was super clean and staff were professional and friendly. The daily specials make Side Street what it is. Point blank. Martini Monday ($5 regular/$10 jumbo), Tuesday Pasta Night ($22 for two pasta dishes and an appetizer), and Wednesday Steak Night ($34 for two steaks, two salads, two sides, and an appetizer). I believe there are two beer nights too, but I hard pass on beer. Liquor, please. Anyways, without these specials, I'm not sure there would be anything - no pun intended - special about Side Street. The food is okay, but the portions are large. The service is okay, but it's a friendly environment. The restaurant has an interesting (read - not always great) smell and is often quite cold, but it's a neat space. Give it a go, but make it one of the specials night. I came at night during the cold period and it was hellah cold. Overall, the dishes was flavorful ! The ambiance is warm and intimate. The restroom was very warm haha! But all areas were clean. My party of 7 went in to have brunch and we were greeted at the door. We were told the kitchen could not handle another party. That may have been true but we should have been asked if we wanted to wait as it would be a wait...very disappointed by the way this was handled. read more

They have a truly kick ass black & bleu salad partnered with strong as hell martinis. These two facts keep me returning. Oh, and I like that it is midtown. I guess technically Overton Square...but farther back, quieter, away from "the scene" found at Local and Bar Louie...parking is easier to find here and the people are more laid back. This ain't a fancy place but I always leave here with a buzz. And their food is definitely good. I truly love their bacon-wrapped filet and could sing a love song to their brie drizzled in honey served with apple slices (I skip the nuts). The martinis are a teensy bit on the expensive side...but trust me, they'll knock you on your a**. I mean that in the best way possible. Side Street is one of those places I rarely think about as an option for dining in Midtown. It is, after all, located on a side street and not easily visible from the cross streets of Madison or Union. We were looking for a place to enjoy a meal with a few friends before heading downtown for a party. I don't know why Side Street entered my mind on this occasion, but I'm glad it did. We sat near the bar at a high-top table; no waiting. Our server was quick to get our drink orders and tell us about the specials. I'd say the menu is fancier than 'casual' but not quite fine dining either. You will not find nachos or chicken wings listed among the appetizer, but you will find bacon wrapped shrimp and grilled chicken skewers. They also serve salads, sandwiches, pasta, and entrees of pork, beef, chicken, and seafood. Two of my friends were sold on the special which was a pork loin entree. They decided to share. My boyfriend ordered the New York Strip and he agreed to let me have a few bites. I ended up ordering the bacon wrapped shrimp appetizer for my meal. We all ordered side salads. I had the house side salad which was actually pretty similar to the Cesar salad. Not very exciting but it was fresh and the dressing was good. The shrimp were awesome. I loved the spicy remoulade dipping sauce. The steak was also excellent. I didn't try the pork dish but it looked tasty as well. We had great service on this evening which was definitely an improvement over a previous visit that I decided not to yelp about. Sooooo I was excited to try this place. Even though I had heard some sketchy things about it. So we went. When I walked in, everyone in the restaurant turned around to stare at my friend and I. We were wearing jeans and tops, nothing special. So I already knew from that point on, there was nothing going on here besides people watching. I had to literally grab the waitress to ask is it seat yourself to which she replied "uh huh". So outside we went. And we waited. And waited. Until finally this bubbly personality appeared and took our orders. She made recommendations and I ordered the Red Head Bitch and my friend had something called Sex with an Alligator I believe. They have an extensive cocktail menu and she said the prices range from $11-$14. The small martinis look like about a 4oz glass. Too small. The jumbo martini turns out to be just a regular martini glass with supposedly 4oz of alcohol. I doubt it. My cocktail was decent but it wasn't worth $13. Also we ordered the buffalo tenders and somehow the buffalo nachos came out. They were pretty tasty but my friend was not having it. I like the laidback atmosphere and great quiet outdoor seating. Inside it smells very smoky because the adjacent bar is open to the restaurant. Servers are very friendly and appropriately attentive. Ordered Salmon Picata to go while enjoying a nice Hob Nob Pinot Noir on the patio, listening to music from the Square's 45th anniversary celebration. Hubs didn't much like his top shelf margarita but sitting outside on a breezy Friday afternoon on quiet Florence St during happy hour is pretty sweet. I was going to side street before the renovations and long before I was old enough for one of their kick ass martinis. Side street is a great place to dine alone or meet friends for good food and cocktails. The wait staff is attentive and very friendly. If dining alone I promise you after a few martinis you will make a friend or two at the bar. They have amazing appetizers and it's hard to choose just one so I suggest getting a few different things to try. I personally love the Memphis Fries and the egg rolls. I'm a midtown girl so take out from Side Street was always a must for me and when I did I usually got their Philly cheese steak and fries...omg soooo good and very filling. I love a good steak and Side Street definitely delivers the New York strip cooked medium is a great choice and I enjoy it with the creamed spinach. When we lived in Memphis we loved hanging out here with friends. We came to visit and came back to this restaurant. We walked in and ONE nice staff member told us to seat ourselves. The first thing I noticed was that the bar area smelled sour..... like the drains at the bar needed cleaning. The rest of the staff just looked at us, and I felt like I was looked at as a bother because I was there. We sat ourselves ( I managed to touch the lovely gum collection under the table while adjusting things for our party), and the place was just dirty. I went to wash my hands after unfortunately accidentally manhandling chewed table gum, and the bathroom was dirty and the paper towel dispenser was broken. I came back out to the table and our group went unacknowledged for about 10 more minutes. We left and took our business to a more welcoming place. I used to love this place, and it makes me sad. read more

I am all about one rule when it comes to dining out with my family. Always be sure to try a new place, before returning back to somewhere we've been. Well tonight was my choice, and I seen the reviews and how interesting the food was!!! The appetizers we chose were amazing. The loaded fries and the Buffalo nachos were great! Where it took a turn for the worst was the salad and the main course! I normally take my phone with me but tonight we had a rule no phones at dinner! So no damn photos of the food. Our salads one Caesar and two house were lack luster, the two house salads were with wilted greens. Which we ended up not even eating but 2-3 bites before the main course came out and our salads taken away. My mother in law ordered the bacon filet as rare as possible! Which they got the temp correct and the it was very rare! However, to call a filet an actual filet... it is considered the tenderloin of beef! Not the most gristle filled extra hard, with the silver strip attached and a knife can barely cut through it! My husband ends up cutting off pieces and pushed what appeared to be about 2oz worth of inedible gristle. We waited patiently for our server Courtney who was accommodating and very friendly! We advised her of the issue, not once complaining or rude. We simply stated that she needed to show this to her manager so he could see that this is not what they claim was a filet. She walked away with the plate and we watched as she went to her manager Q! He not once came to speak with us, not once turned to even acknowledge us, he walked with her to the back while she held the plate! First off as a manager he should of grabbed the plate, and came straight to the table and apologized asked what recommendations or how he could better the issue! Nope! Instead our waitress come back and says, I am so sorry about that, he asked if you would like a dessert on the house! Hmmmm... nope! But thanks for the offer! Still no sign of the manager! She asks are you ready for your bill, okay no problem! We paid $94.77 and had no issue with paying this price! However, we asked if the manager would consider comping maybe $9 dollars of what we felt was fair for the so called filet that was all gristle! Our waitress then goes back and here comes the manager with a chip on his shoulder! First words he said was "WHATS THE PROBLEM"!!! Your asking for a comp on a steak that you ate almost all of, and now your complaining it was horrible! (Mind you he didn't have the plate with the evidence on it). Hmmm.. total ass backwards if you ask me, your willing to give a free dessert that was around the same price of a comp and yet we are paying $94.77 for a damn meal and you have that attitude!!! It was like talking to a brick wall, with no care in the world! Came out with a bully attitude and a piss poor excuse to be combative with a 70 year old woman! Long story short! If your looking for a bar with decent food, this may be the place you wanna come to! Be sure your 80% wasted so you don't notice your food! Don't even bother asking for a manager because it a HUGE JOKE! You are better off getting help from the security who watches the parking structure! For the price we paid tonight LONG HORNS or OUTBACK would of been a better deal! False advertisement of what they call a filet, it was road kill strips! Hanging on by strings! Service is great and they also have waffles, breakfast sandwiches/wraps, eggs your way, etc. and of course Bloody Mary's and mimosas. They have a parking garage right across the street that's free until 6:00pm. They open for brunch at 11:00am. Definitely recommend and will be coming back again. read more

First time here. We had been by this place many times and since we were going to a show at Theatreworks, we decided to check it out. They had open seating and we were quickly greeted and our drink orders were taken. The cocktails were both great (Manhattan and Mango Tango). The jerk chicken appetizer was good and generous. Side Street is one of my favorite places to hang out in Memphis, so I actually can't believe that I never wrote a post about it. It has an awesome patio, good drinks, a friendly staff, and good food. There is such a variety of food to choose from. If you want to try a new drink, they have an extensive martini list, basically every flavor imaginable. They're a bit pricey, though. However, they have many daily specials. And on Monday, they have martini specials: $5 for a regular and $10 for jumbos. On Tuesdays, they have pint night and pasta night. I'm not sure what the deal is for pint night. For pasta night, you pay $20 and get two pastas and an appetizer. My favorite day is Wednesdays. You pay $28 and get any two steaks and an appetizer. The meals also come with salads and a side. Their spinach is the best. On Thursdays, you pay $2.50 and you get any import bottle. Unbeatable price! They have happy hour during the week from 4:00 to 7:00. It has a full bar. Well drinks are about $5. They have a variety of salads. You can add chicken, steak, or salmon to them. Lots of people love their chicken skewers. They have great fries. They also have cheeseburgers and of course, I had blue cheese on mine! They have a variety of desserts. I love this place. read more

Side Street Grill is cool because every time I go, no matter what day, there is some type of drink special that works to my advantage. I like this. I've been 3 or 4 times, but always sat outside on the patio. Not sure really how it is inside, but I really like sitting outside there. Even with all the construction in front of it (Side Street is located near what will be the Overton Square parking garage), it's a good place to hang out for a while. I really like their salads. The buffalo chicken salad was pretty good, but I really liked the Black & Bleu salad. Burgers are awesome. I went with my mom here once and she still talks about the burger she had that day! They have an extensive martini menu...and two sizes for martinis. It's very evident you should just get the larger sized martini. More bang for your buck. The smaller ones are like slightly bigger than shots, and not all that cheap. Good beer and wine selections from what I've seen. Service is always good. Sometimes on the patio it can be a little slow, but they are always really friendly. Good, affordable dining and drinking in Midtown. I do like this place a lot. read more

Okay here is the unspoken thing that we all know about Side Street. it is a "creep" bar. By creep I don't mean creepy people. I mean I have a boyfriend/girlfriend BUT I am sorta seeing someone else on the side. It's dark, cozy, and basically on a side street. So, imagine my surprise when I walk into the remodeled,after the fire,Side Street Grill. It was REALLY well lit. I mean REALLY well lit. So much so that if you were going to "creep" you needed leave your sunglasses on. Now that I got that out of the way..I still love Side Street Grill. I especially love it when it's warm outside and you can sit out front with one of their yummy martini's and catch up with friends. Their drinks are still good and their food is still good. Brought my mom here for her birthday before an Orpheum show. After about 10 minutes, group of ladies came in and sat next to us in the back corner. They were celebrating, totally understandable, but 8 women screaming full volume was too much for my 65 year old mother so we moved and let our server know. Apparently we were in another servers section, and she came over to tell us essentially we had to move back over next to the party. I said no that's ok just cancel our entrees (we had ordered 6-7 mins before). She walked off and minutes later someone brought our food. After that got to eat while several of the girls walked past and glared lol. The food runner seemed to know what happened and apologized but the whole meal was uncomfortable after that. The food was decent, and Trish was nice, although no other mention was made of us being told to get out of this servers section by her. Watched several people walk in (it's seat yourself policy there) go over towards the back area, and turn around to sit elsewhere because of the noise. I say that to be clear - I don't mind loud restaurants but I also dont want to strain to hear my dining companions voice while we eat our meal. As a "lifer" in serving I was pretty appalled. People had told me not to go, but I loved Side Street in the past so I went anyway. Lesson learned I guess. read more

I was intrigued by the reviews, so I had to check this place out. The shrimp skewers were good. The remoulade makes them. I had the Side Street steak--medallions with Bearnaise sauce, spinach, and garlic mashed potatoes. The sauce was separating by the time it made it to the table, so the saucier needs a little practice. But the flavor was good. The temperature wasn't quite right, but the meat was also tasty. The spinach was this very odd scoop of overcooked greens with something, maybe cheesy, in it. I won't be doing that again. The potatoes were fine. They seemed to have a system of serving non-alcoholic beverages, including water, in styrofoam cups. That was very disconcerting. It's a tremendous amount of waste and is also aesthetically unpleasing. I hadn't seen or been served in a styrofoam cup in over a decade. If I want to go for drinks, I'm likely to go back because I enjoyed myself. And I may even eat there again because it's fine. read more

Great little place off of Overton square. We parked in the ihop parking lot and walked over. I had the Cuban and hubby had the Portabella sandwich with Gouda. Cuban was great, but the best is the sweet potato fries. Tossed in cinnamon and sugar, they could be dessert. I didn't have a martini since I'd drank a lot so far this weekend, but I'll definitely be back to try some of the extensive martini list. This place isn't the same.... The remodel was necessary after the fire, but you made the place look like some upscale-wannabe snooty Collierville joint instead of the midtown/square staple that it always was. It's way too noisy in there now, all the original woodwork that managed to muffle the echo and racket is now replaced with fine finished glass, hardwood floors, and perfectly flat walls/ceilings, making it a sound chamber from hell... Food's still good though, I'll give them that much, and the server was literally drowning me in drinks, kept replacing them when I got down to a little less than 1/4 glass. Still like going here, and will continue to return, but I'm just not pleased with the new look/feel of the place, doesn't feel like "home" anymore... read more

I really appreciate wildlife and love spending time observing animals in their habitat, however at Side Street Grill, perhaps the wildlife should be just a little farther from the dining experience... specifically 2 large rats, the presence of whom wrecked our appetites. On the plus side, the service was good. The server was attentive and the food came out fairly quickly. I had a breakfast burrito, which was good, but to be fair, it wasn't anything I couldn't have made at home. The two biggest killers here that wrecked our experience are: 1) we were seated next to 2 moist, mildewy floor mats that stank and didn't do much to inspire a clean atmosphere (to be fair, we seated ourselves, but it was the only free table in the shade and it was 90 degrees out. We didn't sit inside because it smelled like smoke) 2) *the nail in the coffin* Two large rats, one under the propane tank and the other in the garden less than 3 feet from our table. With the above factors, how can we trust that the food we're eating is safe? read more

I enjoyed my girls night out with friends. The food was wonderful, the environment & service was nice (although our sweet lil red-hair female server who accidentally spilled a drink on my friends' black coat). I can't remember her name, but she was very kind and considerate of what had happened and put forth an effort to speak with her Manager "Rick" about her offering to pay for the coat to get it dry cleaned or discount my friends' meal ticket. It all worked out at the end of the night and I must commend "Rick" for visiting our table and being so truthful and kind to us. And kudos the red-hair female server because she was very attentive to our needs and she demonstrated very professional CUSTOMER SERVICE SKILLS! This is my 10th visit and I will continue patronizing the Buisness with my family, friends and co-workers.
