I remember having a Side Street Steak years ago and loved it. I ordered this via Door Dash, along with loaded mashed potatoes, and fried cheese. The steak was very disappointing - ordered it medium, and it was very rare. The bernaise sauce was seperating and tasted "off". The loaded potatoes were good. The fried cheese triangles had little or no cheese - it had leaked out while cooking I suppose. For what I paid, it was very disappointing overall. read more

Once again i have tried another place I really love. This was my first visit and the food and drinks were excellent. The really like the atmosphere if this bar. It wasn't full of smoke and the music wasn't over bearing. I recommend this place highly. We will be back. read more

We came by here late one Friday night to celebrate my friend's birthday. It was a group of us. I have been here several times before but have never reviewed. All in all, this place is solid. Food and drinks are good. I have some Buffalo chicken nachos that were awesome and a martini I rather not name here. I have good news for Side Street fans. After burning down a while back, the place is all set to reopen in less than a month, with an expanded menu, no less. I'm excited to see what they come up with. I've always considered Side Street as more of a bar than a restaurant, but that's not a fair assessment, because the food is actually really good. A couple of my favorites are the Artichoke Dip (can't get enough of it) and the Jamaican Pork Tenderloin, which is simply prepared, but spicy and delicious. They have an extensive martini list and Monday is $2 import night. read more

I came here last Wednesday night for the steak special (seemed like a good idea at the time), and it was...disappointing. It wasn't very busy, but everything took forever to come out. The ahi tuna appetizer was incredibly bland and felt like a waste of what was hopefully good quality fish. The Caesar salad, without croutons, was a sad heap of flavorless wilted lettuce. My filet, ordered medium rare, was more of a medium, at least in my opinion, and I had multiple encounters with the toothpick holding the bacon wrapped around it -- can't they take that thing out before they serve it, so I don't end up sawing through it with my knife and then picking out the pieces? The spinach on the side was the best part of the whole meal, which is a pretty sad statement. Our server was nice, but gave no indication that she was aware of the long wait time, and since the food is brought out by any random person, I didn't feel like I could really complain that my steak was more done that I would've liked...and now that I think of it, I don't recall anyone asking us how our meal was. My boyfriend just suggested going here for dinner tonight, and I said no -- why come back here when he can make me a much better steak at home? read more

Side Street is a bar first, so if you want a drink - especially a martini - then come here. In other cases, i.e. you favor a large selection of beer or you are looking for creative approaches to food, I would go elsewhere. I had the regular Side Street steak, medium rare. I wouldn't know if it actually was, since it was covered in Bearnaise sauce, consider asking for it on the side if you want to alter between plain steak and sauce-on-steak bites. The Caesar salad felt generic, I couldn't find hints of anchovy or other signs of the dressing being home made. (Their drinks did look like they received the additional effort though.) My wife enjoyed her burger, but I am not sure I would return for the food. So again, if you are looking for a stiff drink, this would be a fun place. Cigar smokers are fond of sitting outside later in the evening or in the smoking section, which can draft into the main section at times. read more

The atmosphere of this place is great. Not as busy as the rest of the square can get. A great place to share a bottle of wine with friends. Food is average but at a better price than most places. I had the bacon wrapped fillet which was excellent except my mashed potatoes were dry. My friends had the blackened chicken pasta which was huge, but a little bland. Thursday import beer night is fantastic value - $2.50 bottles, and also some domestics have found their way on to the "import " list. Food is decent. I usually get the portobello sandwich, which is tasty, and the fries are good. I've also had it with a side salad, which is basic but tasty. The crowd is a nice mixture, and the servers are usually very friendly and relaxed. It's a great place to have a chilled evening out. read more

I decided to stop by for brunch based on a very good recommendation and maybe my heightened expectations contributed to the low score, but that wasn't entirely the problem. I ordered the steak and eggs Benedict and it was incredibly underwhelming, specially for the price. (Just over $16 when it was all said and done, no drinks.) I've definitely had much better eggs Benedict for much less but the steak didn't help much either. The service was not terrible but a solid "meh" at best. Might still give this place another chance on a regular meal or a drink since it's been around for so long. read more

Upon arriving, several of the better tables were labeled "reserved," but they were not filled during our visit. The server stated she had only worked at the establishment for several months and appeared unaware of the availability of alcoholic drinks that were not listed on the martini menu. Although, she did not offer any specials, the food was delicious. As an appetizer, the Buffalo Chicken Eggrolls were tasty, but there were only two pieces. This seemed a little overpriced. What looked to be a great find, ended in strong disappointment. Food was just ok. White wine for my wife was served in a hot/warm glass right out of the dishwasher. She specifically asked if the pasta dish could be made without mushrooms, only to have about a dozen in it after the server confirmed it could. When I asked if they had grinding pepper for the Caesar salad, another server pointed to the pepper shaker.....which ironically was empty. Finally, I ordered the steak medallions with Béarnaise sauce....the steak was decent but the sauce was more along a hollandaise without tarragon. Her pasta was merely warm. For starters, the place is pretty laid back. Pretty much everyone but us sat at the bar. It took a while for someone to come to our table, and a decent time to get our food. The food and drinks were great. We came on a Monday so the martinis (with juice) were $5. They were in these really tiny 4oz glasses. My bf found a bug in his drink and when the waiter replaced it, there was less in it than the little he had drank prior. I'm pretty sure the waiter was tipsy. The cocktails are delicious and large, but definitely a bit overpriced. Food is good but not deserving of 5 star. I like that they have spicy options (and they are true to their word when they say spicy), but sometimes it feels like they use spicy as a substitute for flavor. This place has really gone downhill over the past few years. I recently dined here on a Sunday late morning/early afternoon. We were seated (inside) and then pretty much ignored for a long time. There were hardly any customers there, so it was not as if the servers were overwhelmed. Our server was working a table or two outside and seemed to be concentrating on them. While we waited (and waited and waited) for someone to take our order, we had to listen to the incessant banging of slamming doors as servers went from outside to inside and back again. This was quite annoying. We finally were allowed to order our food - salad for one of us and pancakes for the other - and the food was ok - not great, but not bad. Unfortunately, I lost my appetite as there were gnats flying all around us and we constantly had to swat them with our hands. So I couldn't finish the salad. The bathroom was out of soap. I've been to side street a lot because I have a group of friends who just love it. The patio is cool and the interior decent. I feel like side street has a little bit of an identity crisis - TVs around airing sports but light music on the sound system, hmm. The menu is very eclectic but leans more towards the dressy casual night spot - I think. I really like the appetizers and usually make a meal of those - especially the buffalo egg rolls. The identity crisis is odd but doesn't bother me, what does bother me and is the reason for the star deduction is the drinks. I have tried their delicious sounding cocktails twice and both times had a "cheap vodka hangover" the next day. At $12 a drink I expect big girl vodka, not the crap I was drinking in college. Their wine selection is weak and thus I'm usually sober when there - it will never be my choice weekend spot. read more

Okay, so this place is super cute. With the patio and everything. And the food was pretty good. We went for Valentine's Day and they had a pretty affordable special going. The app of baked brie was great, but if you are serving baked brie with honey and almonds, bring out some wet naps, cause honey is sticky. He had house salad, I had the Ceaser salad. He didn't like the spring green mix. I thought the dressing on mine was blah. The croutons on both were tiny, tasteless, store bought afterthought type croutons. My dinner was pretty good, some blackened chicken pasta dish that wasn't that tasty and i thought the chicken was pretty tough. My husband had the salmon which he said was fabulous. For dessert, we chose the fried cheesecake. Ugh. Maybe just a bad idea altogether, presentation was nice but tasted more like a leftover cheese danish from a fry shop than what i would expect in a place trying to pass as upscale. When the bill came, there was an discrepancy ( in their favor) ... the Valentine Price Fix meal was $50 for one app to share, two salads, two entree's each with a side, a dessert to share, and two glasses of champagne. We don't drink at all, so we didn't have the champagne, but i didn't mind paying for it as it is part of the price fix. However, they charged us for two sodas at $2.04 each when only my husband had one, as I had attempted to order iced tea but they don't have that, so I had water. I've no doubt that for catering etc, this place is probably really great. The service was attentive and polite. For me, though, and this did truly ruin my opinion of this place (though nothing could ruin any outing with my amazing valentine) is that this is a liquor lovers smoking bar. They don't have iced tea, and there is smoke everywhere. When we walked in the door, it wasn't smokey, and there were children in there, so it never occurred to me. But soon after we were seated, people all around us lit up. They didn't seem to have any fans or air filtration at all, as it is a smoking establishment. I think that should be posted on the door. I had to shower again as soon as we got home and we had to take our coats to the dry cleaner this morning. So all in all I'd say this restaurant just wasn't a good fit for me. Very cute inside. Looked to be a decent bar. Good people watching. Service was quick and accurate, hostess came around about three times to check on everyone, but somehow service just didn't seem very "warm". But the food was just so-so, how can you have a restaurant in Memphis, TN and not serve iced tea? Nothing wrong with this restaurant, by the time the bill came my nose was burning from the cigarette smoke and we didn't even take the time to fix the problem on the bill. I went in for the steak and martini special. The steak was very undercooked and yet tough and the martinis were awful because they were made with cheap ass gin. I figured, you get what you pay for, right?. Wrong. Apparently, we did not order the "special deal" steak and martinis we ordered the regular version. Why would the waitress not say something? What a scam. If I had not just had two martinis I would never have paid that ridiculous tab. Also the place is run down and gross. read more

Food was great, but beware being told that you have to pay in cash at the end of the meal. We had a great time and really enjoyed our dinner (steak, salad, drinks). When the bill came and I tried to give the waitstaff my card, she told me that their reader was down and it was cash only tonight. She brusquely requested our IDs when we had to leave to find an ATM in Overton Square. The staff was not warm when we returned to pay. A pretty bad way to end a night--cannot recommend to anyone and we won't be back. This could have been easily solved by just telling us before we ordered that we must pay in cash, or in this day and age, the restaurant having a square for accepting cards. There are too many good restaurants in Memphis who know how to treat paying customers to waste time and money here. read more

I had the Cajun pasta. I couldn't eat much of it at all. I was very spicy hot, but no flavor, which just isn't cajun. I was disappointed. The sausage in it was like rubber- had something like gristle in it. A lot- had to spit it out, weirdest thing. I didn't like that at all. I saw other people's food that looked good, though. Perhaps the Cajun pasta is just not their best menu item. Might be worth a revisit. I'll think about it. read more

This place is easily overlooked since it's on a side street to Overton Square. Don't be fooled though, just because it's on a side street doesn't make it any less deserving than the other fabulous places in The Square. This place well exceeded my expectations. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. It's not a huge place, however they manage to feel intimate without feeling like you're on top of other people. They have a fabulous bar and bartenders that are so awesome!!! Cocktails were well made and presented beautifully. Biggest surprise though was how outstanding the salads were. Huge portions, fresh veggies and meat seasoned beautifully! This place has their quality and customer service on point! Good menu and atmosphere. It was a little too bright but still comfortable. The Italian spinach is amazing and so are the drinks.

Service was very slow...on a slow night! Took an hour to get food. Loaded fries not very good. Hamburger was tasty, but dry. More of a bar, than a grill. read more
