So an interesting note as to visiting the Point Reyes Station area, places like Side Street Kitchen open for brunch, so not breakfast & they don't open until 11:00am. There's a bakery nearby to tie you over, but this place & others seem to open a little later & only on select days. So if you're in the area & it is not Friday, Saturday or Sunday plan ahead. This was a quaint find, you order first, take a table & wait for staff to bring out your food. The staff is on it, the host made some good suggestions the cashier followed up ... We both tried the veggie hash; hubby had it with a side of pork belly, not what he expected, a bit on the too fatty side. I substitute out the soft boiled egg for some avocado. My mistake for not reading that the Chimichurri sauce was made from Serrano peppers; way too spicy for me, perfect for the hubby. The overall dish was a tad too greasy for me. We were on a road trip from San Francisco to Mendocino on CA-1 and decided to stop at Point Reyes Station for lunch. Found this place via Yelp. Small place, known for their chicken, big rooster on their branding. We skipped the chicken dishes. I had the Sesame-Crusted Local Rock Cod. They were out of cod and substituted it with halibut. It was a fantastic dish. The fish was beautifully crusted with sesame seeds and tamari, adding both texture and flavor. The fish is complemented by a medley of pea shoots, savoy cabbage and rice noodles. And the wakami/seaweed was a spot of genius, bringing just a dash of sweet-and-sourness. My partner had the Lentil Salad. We also had some bread and their sauce board with 3 sauces - Salsa verde, chimichurri rojo, and curried yogurt. All 3 are very good. Used to come here a lot after rock climbing in Stinson Beach and always used to like the place. Today, I bicycled here from San Francisco. Ordered their half roasted chicken and was expecting greatness again ... but somehow it was all dry, the skin was not crispy, too much seasoning. If a grown man who did not have any breakfast and just biked 40 miles over some mountainous terrain does not enjoy his lunch ... I don't know what's wrong. I was pleasantly surprised, I honestly don't ever expect much from these types of places ( smaller towns ) . The customer service alone had me a happy camper. EVERYONE seems to be pleased to work there, from the hostess to the busboy. The food was pretty good, too. Their popular rotisserie chicken did not disappoint, and it was very different, in a great way. I could almost taste a subtle flavor of fresh lavender ( I could be wrong) . One of the most wonderful things about life is finding an unexpected delight. That's what I found at Side Street Kitchen. I dropped by after making the much delayed trip to see the lighthouse at Point Reyes, a visit that's almost mandatory for any true Bay Area resident. The setup was rather unusual for a full-time restaurant. Almost all the seating was outdoors on a rough pavement area by the street in front of the restaurant. Then we were shuffled in one group at a time to place our order at the counter and given a number. We were told to grab any table we wished. Looking for a quick drink and bite after our hike, we ordered some light fare, some apple fritters, a chicken quesadilla, and an open face veggie sandwich. As a devout meat-eater, I've had to grudging admit that veggie sandwiches are often even better than grilled animal flesh, no matter how lusciously juicy. I suppose vegetarian cuisine just has to work harder to be appealing, and this sandwich was such an exemplar. Starting with a base of butter toasted artisan bread, they piled on sliced cucumbers, toasted almonds, pumpkin and sesame seeds, sprouts, and smothered it all with pesto hummus. The combination of different crunches and light seasoning was a sheer delight. After savoring every bite, I even got the signature vegetarian side-effect, a real boost in energy instead of looking for a quick nap. Everything else we had was just as well executed, if not as memorable. Prices were quite low, just under $50 all in, including a tall glass of sauvignon blanc. I usually don't regret giving up meat, but this was one of those times. They have a dog friendly patio, and they're also kid friendly with a changing table (with chucks!) in the bathroom. I had the Gem Salad which was underwhelming, and was just lettuce coated with dressing and some cherry tomatoes. My family and I were driving from point Reyes and decided to stop for lunch. I am SO glad we did. First off, the ambiance is great. Fun, colorful and bright. It was the perfect day for outside seating and I enjoyed all of the flowers they had out there. The service was excellent, we had our order taken by a super friendly and knowledgeable employee. Delicious food at a quaint little local establishment. The downtown area is really fun to walk around if you have the time. I'll start with dessert. ThButterscotch pudding was to die for! It was one of the best puddings Ive even had. I had the bratwurst which was really good and flavorful. For a few bucks more they throw in a second brat. After a nice hike, we stopped by Side Street Kitchen where we could sit outdoors. We decided to share plates since it was our first time. The Brussels sprouts were done to perfect crispness. The arugula, apple, cheese sandwich had a quince mustard dressing which was further perfected by a crisped baguette. We left feeling very happy about our choice of restaurant and thought we'd found a gem. We didn't realize how right we were! After arriving home, I realized I had left my purse hanging on the chair outside But by that time they were closed. The next day, I received a call from the owner of the restaurant who had was concerned enough to find me down on a day the restaurant was closed to let me know that they had found my purse. She ensured me she'd mail back my purse and sure enough, I received it the next day with my cash and credits cards safe and sound. They open at 11am. We arrived around 11:30am on a Monday holiday (Presidents' Day), but a line at the cashier was already forming. You pay as you order at the cashier. Their menu was small and simple, which is great so you can get decided quickly! The prices were reasonable. For a party of 3, we ordered: Whole Rotisserie Chicken ($24) - I think this is their specialty. It was really well-sesaond and cooked all the way through! The skin was crispy... so go have it and feel guilty later. It already comes with 3 sauces... chimichurri, curry yogurt, pesto olive oil. It's a nice variety. Mac and cheese ($7), Roasted Potatoes ($5) - they were alright. We had to have side dishes with the chicken, so... Chicken Liver Pate ($9) - it's a loooot of pate, so don't be fooled by the small jar that it comes in! It comes with crackers, of course. It's a light and a really smooth pate, but I don't think I'd have it again. If I go to Point Reyes again, I would probably come back here to try their other dishes. I have been eating at this unique establishment, since it was The Pine Cone Cafe. One cold blustery afternoon there, I was sitting at the counter and the cook served me up a bowl of veggie bean chili, it was a unique assortment of different beans. I've never had a Chili like that before. I really missed it when they closed. :( Lucky for me when Side Street took over they created a new better version of that dish. They even kept the original counter! The new version is their Heirloom bean Cassoulet with fried tofu on the top, paired with a drizzle of Chimichurri rojo sauce. So many yummy and healthy choices on the menu! Then throw in their amazing staff, the natural splendor of Point Reyes and you will be experiencing a little slice of heaven! We eat there a least once a month, it's a short trip from Mill Valley. It's where we go to decompress and visit with the sweet staff at the Side Street KItchen. read more

We came in about an hour before they closed at 6:00pm. We weren't feeling chicken, so we each got a pork belly sandwich and a mac and cheese to share. I didn't expect the pork belly to be so good from a sandwich/chicken place. The pork was deliciously salty and perfectly done with that melt-in-your-mouth feel. It's almost a shame that the sauce, a "goat cheese-aioli," had very strong flavors that competed with it. My suggestion? Try it with the sauce on the side. Or maybe the restaurant should come up with a more complementary sauce. The mac and cheese was very normal and served hot - just what we needed on a cold December evening. However, they were out of all chicken items and the rock cod by 12:15 my husband and I must have ordered the last rock cod and 1/2 order chicken. We could hear them telling everyone who came in after us that they were out. The rotisserie only had 3 chickens on it. Seemed to us they needed to be cooking more to fulfill the demand. We enjoyed the smoked oysters. We expected to have this as an appetizer- but everything came out at the same time. The food runner brought us some wrong items- but we were able to correct our order before she set them down. Hoping they made it to the rightful owners. I would have loved more spice to my noodles with the rock cod- but the 3 employees working the front seemed so busy. Wishing I had some hot sauce in my purse. The rock cod had 3 tiny bites of fish. Wonderingly it's always that small- or just because I got the last order. My husband said his chicken was very moist and delicious. He said he felt badly for all the people who came in asking for chicken/ but were told no. Next time we are in point Reyes, we will try some other places. So many had great reviews. This one did have a nice outdoor patio, and several people had their dogs out there. Seemed like most people sitting outside were locals and they all knew each other. Circling back to the food, the sandwiches 9/10, the Brussels 10/10, and rotisserie chicken 8/10. HOWEVER I paid 18 dollars for cod and was given 2 chicken McNuggets size fish sticks.
