Do yourself a favor - if you are going to park at Jacques Ridge, keep going and park at the Bald Mountain Lot. Took the Woods Trail to Barlow Road Trail to Mt. Umunhum Trail. Highlight was the Guadalupe Creek Overlook. 11.2 miles total out and back. Woods Trail is a steady incline uphill. Very dry and not much shade. Barlow Road had mountain bikers on it and the ground was mainly gravel. The Mt. Umunhum Trail was by far the best part. Narrow, dirt road, side of mountain. A few creeks on the way which were nice! Bring lots of water and snacks. No restrooms.

I have taken to hiking daily to beat the boredom of SIP and have been to all the trails in the area in the past 2 months. This is one of my favorites! You get beautiful stunning views of the south bay starting early in the hike. Note that parking is a challenge.

Pretty fall hike. We opted to do this hike instead of Mission Peak to avoid the crowds, and it worked out perfectly. We passed only about a dozen people the whole hike. Rumor has it that 1000+ people come here for a Thanksgiving feast though. -No trouble parking along the street of the Kennedy Road trail head. -Took us 1.5 hours to get to the top (4.1 miles) at "Priest Rock", but you can continue for a longer hike as well. There isn't really a destination at the top; this hike is more about the scenery along the way. -Pretty continuous, moderately steep uphill climb. Not gonna lie, I was pretty tired trying to keep up with tall people legs. And I consider myself a pretty good hiker. -Portapotty at the trail head. -Narrow road driving up, lots of deer skipping around. Again, definitely a great alternative to busy Mission Peak.

Ready to go up the last part of the Priest Rock trail?

What is the purpose of an open space preserve? Preserve flora and fauna, preserve a special feature or view, and/or provide recreation opportunities. Sierra Azul has two out of three; not bad. I'm not surprised that the undeveloped wildland east of Lexington Reservoir is an open space preserve. All my times driving to and from Santa Cruz, I've seen the hills, and although I haven't always thought "It would be cool to find out what's in them thar hills", that thought has occasionally crossed my mind. Well, I found out what's in them thar hills, hence this review. I was part of a guided hike with the Mid-Peninsula Open Space organization, a 10.8 miler on Priest Rock, Kennedy, and Limekiln trails. We parked on Alma Bridge Road. Lots of shrubbery typical of these dry hills, reminds me of Southern California hiking. Occasional forests, especially in the canyons where there are seasonal creeks. The Priest Rock trail is steep, and the top half mile is very steep; bikers, make sure your rear brakes work well. The Sierra Azul preserve is not remote, but because the trailheads *are* quite remote, this preserve doesn't get a lot of use. So it's a good place to get your aerobic exercise, clear your mind, or take the dog for a run without facing the crowds. As for the ridge trail, aka the Kennedy Trail -- well, it has a view of the Santa Clara Valley that made me say "wow". If you're looking for a workout, don't need anything special, and just want to get away from the bustle without driving too far, then Sierra Azul is a good option.

Iconic Santa Cruz Mountains. I hiked 11 miles. It consist of craggy ridges and luch green hills. Trails are very wide (fire road), and there is a creek along the trail in some portions. Vista is great. You can see all the South bay. I also enjoyed rattlesnake, lizard, newt, squarrels. I almost stepped on the rattlesnake!

Do Appreciate the new entrant in bay area open space reserve. It is less crowded, clean facilities, good infrastructure and great views of mountaintop and the valley below. My review is for hike to Mt Umunhum from Bald mountain parking area. Few points: 1. Reserve opens at 7 am (Not at sunrise). Timed gate opens automatically exact on time. 2. NO water anywhere (Bring plenty of water) 3. Easy steep trail good for moderate hike. Mostly shaded , although the views are missing too 4. Views at Mt Umunhum top are breathtaking and so calming. Saving grace from monotonous hike. 5. No Parking Fees

Came here in 85 degree weather just as we move into the summer season. Wanted a spot that wasn't too crowded so my dog could roam off leash for a bit. If you like wild flowers and butterflies fluttering around your face, this is the place for you. Not much of a view. Took the Kennedy Trail Round trip 8 miles. 2 hours up hill (mini breaks every half hour) and 1.5 hours back. My lab was pretty exhausted on the way back, looking for shade every few hundred feet (how do you tell your dog you're going for an 8 mile hike?) Bring: -**plenty of water + water for your doge -sunscreen -a towel because you will get shweaty Pros: -butterflies, lizards, and birds of prey spotted -you'll work up a good sweat on the uphill -plenty of parking available across street on Top of the Hill Rd -wide dirt paths -not too many people (outdoorsy feel without it feeling like mission peak crowded with people) Cons: -not too much trees for cover during summer months. (But I enjoyed working on getting a nice glow on my pasty skin) -reaching the peak there wasn't a final destination point where there was a view, but you can catch some glimpses of the city of Los Gatos and Some rolling hills down Hicks road

At 17000 acres Sierra Azul is the largest Open Space Preserve on the peninsula, and one of the best hiking spots in the foothills south of San Jose, as long as you don't mind hiking on mostly dirt roads. There are actually 3 different trailheads: one at Lexington Reservoir on the west, one at Hicks Rd in the east, and one on Kennedy Road in the north. From Hicks Rd to Lexington Reservoir is about 12 miles one way, so it would make for a pretty good car shuttle day hike. Note that you can't camp in the preserve. Due to its size you can get a large variety of terrain here, from grassy hillsides to chaparral to some amazingly beautiful forested canyons. You might also be interested to know that this is the location of Mt Umunhum, the mountain with the odd-looking rectangle on top (it's the remains of an old Air Force base). It sure does beckon you on, but unfortunately the summit is closed due, I believe, to an asbestos hazard. Maybe someday they'll get around to cleaning the place up so people can go up there.

Mt. Umunhum and a puffy cloud

We had a great hike here last week, about five miles roundtrip on the Woods trail from the Hicks Road lot. It was a beautiful cool fall day with blue skies, puffy white clouds and the crunch of fallen leaves underfoot. Sierra Azul was a notable destination for us, marking the day we finished hiking all the accessible MROSD preserves. The views were good with some valley views, Mt. Umunhum looming over us and beautiful trees all around. Trails were well maintained and not terribly steep. There is a restroom at the Hicks Road entrance. Be aware that car break-ins are known to happen in this lot - there was broken window glass on the ground the day we visited. I look forward to a return trip to explore more of Sierra Azul.
