I've been going to Silhouette Salon for at least 10 years now at the recommendation of my family members. Ken has been cutting and coloring my hair and more recently, Teresa did this color. Since my hair is fairly dark and I went with this lighter color, Teresa recommended me a shampoo to help retain the color. Both are great at their craft and are a great team. First off, I just want to say Teresa is a one of a kind. To me, she is like a gem that's really hard to find... I got my hair permed from her with a cut and she did a fantastic job!.. What I love about her is she's not like other hair stylist, when she asked me if I part my hair one side or sometimes other stylist don't even asked that question and just part it anyways, I said no cause I love flipping my hair both ways and she cut my hair evenly and I know its not often for someone to cut layers evenly on both sides, especially with curls! So when I flip my hair both ways, It was perfect! I've been looking for a salon that does big curls cause I know not a lot of places provide that service and I can't stand tight curls. Lol .. A friend recommended me this place to get my bang cut. I went on a random day because my bangs were too long for comfort. I don't know who helped me, but I went in around evening, and there was 2 women. It was quick and simple. I think at the time I was debating to get the asian bang cut or just side swept like I normally have. I went with the norm-- and for the first time I loved my bangs :D There's so many girls that have awesome bangs, and I long for theirs. I still have yet to get the right cut like them. Anyway, I believe my cut was $6. :D It was my first time there and the lady gave me a card with stamps for the next time. Not sure if they still do that. Or if it was a 10% card lol. The 2nd time I went, was quite recently. It was my day off and it was quite hot. I went to get my tap fix and went to the clothing store next door to L&L. Afterward I thought of passing by the hair salon just to see the costs. $20? Hell yeah! My boyfriend likes short hair more than long lol. Soooo I decided to get a short hair cut! The woman who helped me, I don't know her name. But she was nice to hear my requests and make sure what I wanted to have. I thought I was being annoying because I wasn't sure what I wanted. First I wanted it just straight across... Just to see how it'd look like. When I did that it looked kind of weird. But she suggested I layer it a bit to give it shape. I've always had layers in my hair, so I was kind of uninterested-- For my bangs I wanted it kind of straight across but long enough to side swept. I've always had side swept bangs -___- so I wanted something different. Well after me being indecisive and second guessing what I wanted for her to do... She finished the cut! So my bf and I were bored one day so we decided I should change my hair. I used to dye it all the time and get it highlighted in high school and college, but after awhile I grew out of it. But like I said..we were bored on a Sunday afternoon. So I yelped and googled hair salon in Union City. I read some reviews and decided to pick this one. When I got there, there were kids screaming, but the staff was VERY friendly and immediately welcomed me. I only had to wait 15 minutes and luckily they sat me down with Ken. I had no idea what I wanted so even though I was really iffy he suggested a couple of things here and there and showed me some samples without being pushy or indecisive at the same time. I had no idea what I wanted, but he was very patient. My bf showed him a picture of me that he really liked and after looking at the picture for less than 3 seconds...TADA he was able to replicate the cut. Not only the cut, but the color was even better than I had expected. He gave me a new color which wasn't brown or red,a more a RICH tone, and then he added highlights that were more golden than blonde. He always made sure to double check on the foils so the color would turn out nice and even. At first I was scared I was going to hate it, but after he dried it I was 100% happy. For a very good haircut, full hair dye, and highlights it was only 130. He was also very friendly and fun to interact with. He took both my bf and my comments into consideration and gave me the perfect look. I just hope it doesn't grow out too quickly! I'm 35 and have had the same hair stylist for most of my life "Tina from perfect cuts in Sunnyvale :)" Since residing in east bay I got horrible haircuts from all over...you try to shrug it off though when you hate your haircut your days feel so much worse...Silhouette didn't show up at the time I was searching, and was lucky enough to walk by this diamond in the rough. They have been cutting my hair since for a few years now, and I've never been disappointed. Even hesitated to write a review to keep the secret lol, though reading some of these negative reviews shocks me, never in my time with them have I experienced, or witnessed anyone walk out in a lesser mood than when they walked in. I'm pretty tolerant of mediocre hair cuts because as long as there's enough length to tie it all back I'm fine. With that being said, I have only cried once in my life while leaving a salon from a traumatic hair cut in jr. High. Now I can say I've cried twice thanks to this salon. I had long hair (past mid back) and wanted a medium A-line bob. I booked an appointment with Ken because of yelp reviews. I repeated to him numerous times that I wanted it long enough to tie back and showed him a picture. He washed my hair and then told me where he was going to cut. I said okay to proceed with cutting. Throughout the snipping I found him to not be detailed and rather dare I say lazy with his cutting. I repeated again that I wanted my hair to still be able to be tied back but he said it won't look good and kept cutting and cutting and cutting away. Until I told him to stop. I was unsure whether I would be able to still tie it back so I took out my rubber band (he even had the audacity to sigh loudly in deep annoyance) and tried it and it BARELY made it. That's when I told him to just stop cutting. I was mortified. I told him that it's nothing like the picture. He then insulted me by saying that the reason why my hair looked so short is because I was standing. So to prove my point I sat back in the chair, and what do you know? My hair was still short. Shocking. He also told me that it looks different because I needed highlights to match the picture. He was definitely pulling for any excuse at this point because the girl in the picture was blond. Not only was it more than 3 inches shorter than what I had asked for, it was noticeably uneven. I showed it to him and he said the only way to fix it was to cut more. I said to him, "I'm sorry. I really don't feel I should be paying for this because it's nothing close to what I had asked for." But I still ended up wasting $25 for an unfinished cut. He also told me that he's done this cut many many times before. And sure, he may have done this cut, but this cut is not what I had asked for. In conclusion, if you want someone who is detailed, listens to what you want, and is able to cater to your needs do yourself a favor and heed my advice. Do not go here. read more

This is the second time I have been to this place to get my haircut. Both the times, wait time was zero. I got the same stylist, Irene, both the times and she listened to what cut I really wanted. For the first few times during her cut she kept asking if it was ok and then after that she kept on working on my hair and transformed to what i had pictured in my mind. The first time I was here was 6 months before. She, then, cut my hair taking her sweet time for almost 25-30 mins. And I was really happy with her work. Then I came back after 6 months and not weeks..eekk, I know.. I wanted just trimming but I had lots of splits and my hair really looked dried and fried. But she took her time even just to trim it. Now my hair looks healthy, tame and perfect for summer. She told me I should come back every 6 weeks to get rid of my splits. Will go back again and ask for her. read more

So i called Silhouette to make an appointment with Ken and got an appointment on the same day! yay!! I brought a pic of the hair style I liked. Ken actually was very nice. i even told him what i wanted....seemed like he listened. But he ended up layering my hair too much. It didn't look like the pic that I brought. Disappointed I only tipped $2 since I won't be coming back. When I got home i washed a blow dried my hair. It actually looked pretty good....way better than I thought! well...now i regret giving him so little tips. Anyway, I got some compliments from my friends today so I decided to write a review on yelp. Even though the hair style didn't look like the pic i showed to Ken at all, nevertheless I do like it. The cut was $18(didnt get a wash), I don't trust these salon and i prefer to go home to wash my hair. I also had someone waxed my eye brows for $8. The lady was very nice, but it took her a while to shape it the way I wanted and I am normally not too picky with my eyebrows. so overall experience was good coz of good customer service. That's what counts!! Prices are reasonable. The salon is not really clean. Ken didn't sweep away the hair of the customer that came before me. I had to step on the guy's hair to sit down. I thought Ken should have at least cleaned up a bit before asking me to sit down. read more

But I was so impressed by her skill that I sought her out once my hair was long enough for the style I wanted. All I had to do was show her a picture. I would say 3.5-4. The place is generally clean. Service was decent, a little chit chat here and there. My hair cut took about half an hour, a lot shorter than i thought it would be. I thought it would take a least an hour. I like the hair cut I got, but it's not exactly what I asked for or wanted it to be. (I gave an example picture of what I wanted my hair to be like.) He just took a glance and eyeballed the rest of the hair style. Skills, not bad...but I wish he spent more time really understanding the hair style I wanted and a hair style that suits my face, instead of just sort of rushing it. I came here on a whim and they immediately took me in. Granted, the place was somewhat empty. Anyways, I came in for a full color and highlights. I wasn't sure what color would look good on me so I asked Ken for advice. I wanted a subtle and natural look. The sample for the base and highlight color he suggested slightly differed from the end results. It was a bit lighter... But at the end, it still looked great. When he shampooed my hair, he totally massaged my scalp. It felt wonderful! He didn't really make conversation with me, but it didn't really bother me since I'm not a big talker myself. Though it felt really impersonally and made me a little edgy. At the end, the total cost for my hair was $165. That's because my hair is thick and a bit long. Kinda iffy about the price but I guess that's the average price around the bay area. The place was clean and not cramped up like some other salons I've been to. I've been here once in the eighth grade for my promotion ceremony.. I'm 20 now. But I vividly remember going there thinking I'd look super cute for promotion. My parents have been coming here on and off for awhile for haircuts. I've gotten haircuts as well from Ken in the past. I usually don't do anything too drastic, just a trim, so I was pretty satisfied with the haircuts. As my big day was approaching, I was in search of a hair stylist and make up artist. My maid of honor had recommended a friend who worked at Mac. She lived in S.F. and if I wanted to have her do my hair and makeup, I would need to go to her, unless three or more of my bridesmaid used her. That was a problem since my venue was in Emeryville. I didn't have a preference as to how my bridesmaids wanted to do their hair or make up. Most of them wanted to do their own or go with someone they already knew, which was fine. My only request was that they do an updo. Anyways, I didn't want to head to S.F. on the morning of my wedding and rush back, so I decided against using her. While getting haircuts at Silhouette before, I vaguely remember seeing some signs about bridal make up and hair, so my mom and I decided to head over to inquire about this with Teresa. She was very friendly and explained the process. We decided to book her on the morning of my wedding, which was in October. Teresa wanted my mom and I to come in two days earlier to do waxing. since she knew i had sensitive skin, instead of waxing, she just did plucking. I showed her a picture of my dress and veil so she could see what would go well with it. I had been growing out my hair for quite some time. We decided on a natural look with and classic updo with some loose hair hanging down. My appointment was set for 9AM on the morning of my big day. The salon didn't open until 10 but they opened up early for us. There were some other customers there which were finishing up. Being that October 6 was a good Chinese wedding date, most venues used for weddings must have been busy. We waited a little bit before our turn. Make up was done first. She used colors that went with my tone. Teresa also put fake eyelashes, which looked great. She put hair rollers and let it sit for awhile. During that time, she worked on my mom's hair and make up. Since I didn't have a headpiece, she recommended to go to Safeway's to buy baby's breath to add some design for my veil. During the wedding, I got many compliments about how beautiful I looked that day. When photos came out, some even said they didn't think it was me. Even to this day, I still hear about how nice I looked on my wedding day. I've also had people ask who did my make up and hair. All in all, I think choosing Teresa was a good idea and I'm happy that I had her as my make up artist and hairstylist. read more

I've been going to Silhouette Salon to get a haircut ever since I moved to Union City. Price is great and I love all the haircuts I got. Teresa gave me my first haircut there and she gave me really good looking bangs!!! Better than what I had in mind and lots of people gave me compliments. Another lady also gave me a quick cut/trim and that turned out pretty well. On my last visit, I finally decided to get a perm (been putting it off for a while), and it turned out well. Teresa did the perm for me and when I showed her pictures of what I like the hair to be like, she was very understanding and know what needs to be done to get the effect.
