    Traditional Fried Rice
    Ches D.

One of my favorite Thai restaurants in Pittsburgh. Their tapas selection is great and unique. The rack of lamb with the green curry is flavorful, and their Thai crab crowns are always a must. The traditional fried rice and mango salad are perfect for a warmer day dinner. Love the ambience in the dining area, food is always consistent, and attentive service. Reasonably priced as well.

Juicy food. Juicier people. Came around 6:15, sat immediately tbh p empty. Prices are normal, protein is +2$ for some dishes. Pad see ew is solid, he's like a black tshirt- nothing too flashy but gets the job done, your reliable guy. They have a good variety of thai tapas, the chicken is infinitely than the beef, delicious really good char. Service is what it should be and decent street parking around. I had a great time with some really good friends, def would come back. Strengths: empty

I've been coming here since 2017 and it is my all time favorite Thai restaurant. I get the basil duck and it never disappoints.

I ordered takeout from here. The food came out hot. The tea was a little too sweet for me. Moo and goong dumplings were just okay. The texture was kind of weird, almost sponge like. Couldn't taste the shrimp and was definetly well grounded, not minced I also got the pad kee mow. Level 5 spice level with mixed meat. The pricing is deceiving. You have to pick a meat that adds extra to the price shown. That's an additional $3 ($17 total). The meats tasted off and the noodles seemed old. Looking at one of the pieces of chicken, there was a weird grey/green stripe on it. Not sure if it was mold or what. I found a few more of the same and no longer ate anymore. Would not order from again

Thai food is one of my favorite cuisines, and this was my first time trying Silk Elephant in person after having gotten takeout a couple of times. The food is delicious! I had a spicy tom yum soup (super flavorful & filled with a ton of veggies) and a lamb curry on the waitress's recommendation. The curry was thick & spicy & the lamb was super tender - I will definitely order that again! We went as a big group and shared a couple of appetizers as well. My favorites were the beef satay (super tender with a really good peanut sauce) & the salmon dumplings (a combination that I was surprised to like so much). The restaurant also has a bar, although I opted for the guava tea (free refills!). My friends who got drinks said they were delicious, though, and they have an interesting cocktail menu. The only downside about this restaurant is that service is very slow. We were one of only two tables dining in, and the waitress took a really long time to visit us to get our orders. If you aren't in a rush, the food is worth the wait! Food: A- Drinks: B Service: C Ambiance: B-

Very good thai food! We got this last night when a lot of local places stopped delivering after 8pm. Silk Elephant came through and we loved the food!! The only reason I took away a star is because we ordered calamari and it only came with like 5-6 rings on calamari and it wasn't my favorite and the sauce with it wasn't good Our meals were delicious and piping hot! We got the Red Curry and the Spicy Basil Fried Rice. The spice levels we got were perfect and had a nice kick without being too much. My boyfriend raved about the curry. We will definitely be ordering from here again but will skip the calamari next time

Amazinggggg Thai food I love it here !

The food is so good, servers are so attentive & it's a quiet & thoughtful environment.

While in the area I was craving Thai food and my friend mentioned she knew of a good place nearby. We stopped by around 1130 on a Sunday and it was almost empty when we got there. We were seated right away and ordered a bunch of different foods to share including mussamun curry, pad see ew, pad kee mow, Thai noodle soup, chicken satay, and Thai iced tea. I'd say everything was really good with the exception of the kee mow. It had veggies in it that I've never had in it before and I just didn't love it as much I have at other places. The mussamun was delicious and the noodle soup is something I've never had before but will definitely be on my radar from now on. The inside was nice, the staff was really friendly, and the food came out pretty quickly. Overall I thought it was a good experience and I would go back!

Came with family to Silk on a Sunday evening and was greeted by beautiful decor, delicious food, and no wait time. Highly recommend the panang curry, crunch noodle curry, fresh rolls, and tofu rice. The Tom Kha soup was okay - a bit more on the sour side. But other than that everything tastes great and spice level 8/10 was perfect for us!! Definitely would come back!

tl;dr: decent Thai food in squirrel hill with large portions, slow service but nice ppl. Probs better as takeout. ---- Walked in at 7p on a Friday and was sat immediately. Decently busy but not packed. The menu was extensive and they had a large wine selection. Got the tom yum soup which was $5 for a small bowl. The flavor was okay but I felt like I could have made it myself with the paste from the store. Wasn't as flavorful as I usually expect from a restaurant. The veggie spring rolls were delicious! Noodle Curry was beautiful and a huge serving. I got spicy level 4 which wasn't very spicy at all. The flavor of the curry was okay but also not as strong as I would have liked. The crunchy noodles on top were yummy but then they started getting soggy which I didn't personally enjoy. My fiancee got the curry fried rice which was also a huge portion. She said the flavor was good but "nothing to write home about" Prices were fair though. Overall was only 40 bucks. I have a feeling they do more business for takeout. But we'll probs stick to our usual Thai place. Glad to have tried it tho after so many years walking by.

Got takeout during COVID. My go to is usually pad see ew, and it was definitely tasteless and boring tasting. I was so utterly disappointed. I wish I'd gone to Thai Noodle Outlet nearby. I am sad that I strayed from them and gave the Silk Elephant a chance. The only good thing about the Silk Elephant is the indoor ambiance, but that's not an option right now without catching COVID. Don't be like me, full of regrets. Get great Thai food from Thai Noodle Outlet or from Kiin Lao & Thai Eatery. So much better, much more flavor.

    Pad Thai with fried tofu

Great Thai food! There are loads of Thai options around Pittsburgh, and tons of Asian food in Squirrel Hill. This place has some really interesting and unique options as well as a diverse menu. I decided to stick to my go-tos. Ordered the pad Thai (mild spice) with extra sauce and tofu as well as the Thai custard with coconut sweet sticky rice. Wow, they give you a huge portion of noodles for pad Thai! And it's very tasty as well. I asked them for some extra sauce so it wouldn't be dry, and they did not disappoint. This was a satisfying amount of sauce. Also, they gave me lots of peanuts (much more than most places) and perfectly followed some of the other instructions for my order. And, they added in large chunks of fried tofu. It was decently well soaked in the sauce and pretty tasty. Decent amount of eggs and bean sprouts. Overall, quite good. The Thai custard was also quite tasty. The custard itself was absolutely excellent. Good portion, perfect balance of sweetness, not too eggy, just a great treat. The rice was sticky and decent. Oddly, there were kernels of black rice in it (I've not seen this before in Thai sticky rice). There wasn't quite enough coconut topping/sweet milk. All in all, a very solid option for Thai food in Squirrel Hill. I definitely prefer their pad Thai over Thai and Noodle Outlet. Portions are quite large, prices decent. They have loads of unique tapas options, like corn cakes, mussels, and more. I'd recommend.

We had a really great time there this past week! Our group was of 10 and they were able to accommodate us well and our food came out pretty quickly! Everything we had was delicious. Despite it being very warm in the restaurant, it was an overall good ambiance and experience. I'll definitely visit again to try more curry!

Not only do they look great, they taste great. It's always great to find a location that takes pride in their mixed drink selection. The only flag I have is if you order the Honey Bee Martini be prepared to feel like a bee is stinging you every time you take a sip. I enjoy spice, but even this had enough kick to make me savor it periodically. Disclaimer: Taste the flower at your own risk. Remember the saying, "Curiosity killed the cat". - Food: 4 / 5 Appetizer - When you think American cuisine, what do you picture? A hamburger? Hot dogs? An American Flag on the back of a Ford F-150 with a bald eagle in the driver seat? Even though all those can be true, I think of Crab Rangoon. Even as a non-crab person, I do enjoy popping one of these bad boys into my mouth after dipping it in the provided sauce. Nicky's uses a homemade pineapple sauce that adds just a slight tang on this small delight. Entrée - Bread wasn't the greatest creation of mankind. Actually, it was spice because that allowed Thai food to flourish. It has always been of my opinion that if you know how to use spices, then you can make any dish pop. We had the Pad Phet and Basil. Both dishes were absolutely flavorful and made each bite as enjoyable as the last. If you get a box, make sure to get two and a paper bag for reinforcement because if you have sauce left, you are going to want to pour that over your leftovers. Dessert - The sticky rice mango is definitely an interesting dish, but it had something in it that tasted like half and half and ruined any flavor that the mangoes held. The ice cream saved that sweet taste, but the sticky rice that lay below reminded me of a Rice Krispie treat that you found in a corner of your kitchen that was there for months and a friend dared you to take a bite. Disclaimer: You cannot eat the banana leaf...don't ask how we know. - Service: 4.25 / 5 When dining with someone who has a food allergy, you always worry about cross-contamination. Luckily, at Nicky's, even without disclosure, we had no issues at the end of the night. However, as the restaurant gets busy, the service definitely becomes slower, but if you have a great companion you honestly don't notice it. Nicky's also does a great job of not rushing you out the door as soon as the dessert has been finished and it seems each server helps the other servers if it becomes really busy, which isn't a bad system. It's worth noting there are standard charges including a pre-calculated tip, which is fairly common for restaurants of this style. - Vibe: 5 / 5 Nicky's is the exact reason why I started doing food reviews. By that, I mean I wanted to find interesting restaurants where you could sit down with other people, have a great conversation, enjoy some good food and just relax in the unique ambiance. - Overall: 4.25 / 5 My momma always said, "Thai food is a great indicator for a vibe check" and for my own personal add-on, "Great Thai food is how memories are made". If you are ever on the fence about certain people in your life, take them to Nicky's. By the end of the meal, you'll know where they stand. Recommend? Why is this even a question? Of course!

We had a horrible culinary experience the past couple of days driving through West Virginia, Ohio, and western New York. Pittsburgh was our last stop before heading home and Kiin Lao and Thai Eatery made up for all of the culinary disappointment this weekend. Let's talk about the ambiance first. Everything about this restaurant was quite beautiful. When I say beautiful, I don't mean it in an elegant way, but an artsy street vibe way. It is hip, clean, and we'll put together. You can tell a lot of love went into the decorations and into every piece of art on its walls. The service was pretty good. The server herself was attentive when needed and left us alone when needed. The food was AWESOME. We got the papaya combo with the Thum Mak Houng option, curry puffs, grilled pork shoulder with sticky rice, and Pad Gra Prow Street Style. The papaya was "lao-style" made with fermented shrimp paste. If you love deep umami flavors, this is it for you. The papaya salad was pungent and sour and savory spicy and just so satisfying. We asked for a 6/10 spiciness and they came with the heat. The chicken skewers that came with it was flavorful too. A little bit of char on the chicken would've brought it over the top. The curry puffs were so comforting and had that south Asian flavor profile that was very welcomed. The curry and spice blend did not overwhelm the potatoes. Instead it enhanced the earthy potato flavors in the best way possible. The menu said that it came with a cucumber sauce but I don't think we got that. What we got was a more like a honey sauce. The sauce was good in itself but didn't pair well with the puffs. The grilled pork shoulder was delectable. The meat was tender and it was seasoned perfectly. Again, more char on the meat would've brought it to a new level. The only gripe I have with this order was the sticky rice. The amount of sticky rice you get with it was so small I thought it was a joke initially. Nope, it was not! I thought the Pad Gra Prow Street Style was OKAY. I would've made it a little saucier. Despite this, my significant other absolutely LOVED it. Pad Gra Prow was my significant other's favorite dish when she lived overseas. She said that this was the best Pad Gra Prow she has had on this side of the world. Overall, it was a wonderful experience. We would definitely come by again when we are back this way.
