3/23/25 Ate List: Chicken Spring Rolls - 6.2 Chicken Red Curry (Spice Level 4) - 7.8 You never forget your first time. And my first time, eating red curry, was with Silk Elephant. Haven't had it since 2018/2019. I love the dish. Super delicious. Wish there was more Chicken included, maybe asking for extra chicken is worth it. Also spice level 4 has a bit of burn, felt it a little later. Maybe a 2 or 3 for some heat but not in an overwhelming way. Additionally, tried the spring rolls. These were surprisingly thin. Were close is size to a taquito. Tasty, helped hold me over because I was so hungry. Not essential but fine enough. Solid spot though, will order (dine in or take out) from here again. read more

The food here is good, but never order catering. First, we were hosting a client. We had a strict business schedule and our food was delivered 30 minutes late! We scheduled this delivery days in advance! Second, we didn't receive plates with our catering order. We only discovered this after the delivery guy dropped off the food half-heartedly on the ground next to our serving table. So I called Silk Elephant and said we didn't get plates, but we got chop sticks and forks. The person in the background said, "They didn't ask for plates." No, you wanted to cut corners and save a few pennies by not providing plates. Or you forgot them. Or you were grossly negligent, late on your delivery, and cost one of your customers reputation with one of their customers. Either way, we didn't get an apology and the cashier clearly had no idea how to handle the situation. I will never eat at Silk Elephant again. And any business event that me or my colleagues host (for which we have ordered Silk Elephant a minimum of 3 times so far this year) will be catered by a different restaurant. One of my favorite Thai restaurants in Pittsburgh. Their tapas selection is great and unique. The rack of lamb with the green curry is flavorful, and their Thai crab crowns are always a must. The traditional fried rice and mango salad are perfect for a warmer day dinner. Love the ambience in the dining area, food is always consistent, and attentive service. Juicy food. Juicier people. Came around 6:15, sat immediately tbh p empty. Prices are normal, protein is +2$ for some dishes. Pad see ew is solid, he's like a black tshirt- nothing too flashy but gets the job done, your reliable guy. We enjoy the food, WHEN IT ARRIVES! The past two times we have ordered directly from their website, through their preferred delivery service we have been severely disappointed--one time it NEVER arrived, and I eventually had to go to the restaurant myself since they did not have a driver, and the same thing has happened again tonight, except we had to cancel the order because they still did not have a driver TWO HOURS AFTER WE PLACED OUR ORDER . The food was ice cold last time, as it would have been tonight, if it ever arrived. Receiving cold food is not acceptable. Not having drivers available for a "preferred ordering platform" is not acceptable. When we called to cancel, the restaurant made no apologies or accommodations. It seems this is not a problem to them, however it is a problem to their customers and they should be concerned. We will not be ordering delivery from Silk Elephant again. And as the restaurants ambience has declined over the years, I do not see myself eating in the restaurant any time soon either. read more

I ordered takeout from here. The food came out hot. The tea was a little too sweet for me. Moo and goong dumplings were just okay. The texture was kind of weird, almost sponge like. Couldn't taste the shrimp and was definetly well grounded, not minced I also got the pad kee mow. Level 5 spice level with mixed meat. The pricing is deceiving. You have to pick a meat that adds extra to the price shown. That's an additional $3 ($17 total). The meats tasted off and the noodles seemed old. Looking at one of the pieces of chicken, there was a weird grey/green stripe on it. Not sure if it was mold or what. I found a few more of the same and no longer ate anymore. Thai food is one of my favorite cuisines, and this was my first time trying Silk Elephant in person after having gotten takeout a couple of times. The food is delicious! I had a spicy tom yum soup (super flavorful & filled with a ton of veggies) and a lamb curry on the waitress's recommendation. The curry was thick & spicy & the lamb was super tender - I will definitely order that again! We went as a big group and shared a couple of appetizers as well. My favorites were the beef satay (super tender with a really good peanut sauce) & the salmon dumplings (a combination that I was surprised to like so much). The restaurant also has a bar, although I opted for the guava tea (free refills!). My friends who got drinks said they were delicious, though, and they have an interesting cocktail menu. The only downside about this restaurant is that service is very slow. We were one of only two tables dining in, and the waitress took a really long time to visit us to get our orders. Very good thai food! We got this last night when a lot of local places stopped delivering after 8pm. Silk Elephant came through and we loved the food!! The only reason I took away a star is because we ordered calamari and it only came with like 5-6 rings on calamari and it wasn't my favorite and the sauce with it wasn't good Our meals were delicious and piping hot! We got the Red Curry and the Spicy Basil Fried Rice. The spice levels we got were perfect and had a nice kick without being too much. My boyfriend raved about the curry. We went here to get out of the heat! We were seated right away and immediately got water. The food and the service were both good. I ordered the fried calamari and it was awful - limp and chewy. We also tried the Pad Thai with beef and that was very good. The restaurant was very nice, and a great break from the summer sun. read more

While in the area I was craving Thai food and my friend mentioned she knew of a good place nearby. We stopped by around 1130 on a Sunday and it was almost empty when we got there. We were seated right away and ordered a bunch of different foods to share including mussamun curry, pad see ew, pad kee mow, Thai noodle soup, chicken satay, and Thai iced tea. I'd say everything was really good with the exception of the kee mow. It had veggies in it that I've never had in it before and I just didn't love it as much I have at other places. The mussamun was delicious and the noodle soup is something I've never had before but will definitely be on my radar from now on. The inside was nice, the staff was really friendly, and the food came out pretty quickly. Overall I thought it was a good experience and I would go back! read more

tl;dr: decent Thai food in squirrel hill with large portions, slow service but nice ppl. Probs better as takeout. ---- Walked in at 7p on a Friday and was sat immediately. Decently busy but not packed. The menu was extensive and they had a large wine selection. Got the tom yum soup which was $5 for a small bowl. The flavor was okay but I felt like I could have made it myself with the paste from the store. Wasn't as flavorful as I usually expect from a restaurant. The veggie spring rolls were delicious! Noodle Curry was beautiful and a huge serving. I got spicy level 4 which wasn't very spicy at all. The flavor of the curry was okay but also not as strong as I would have liked. The crunchy noodles on top were yummy but then they started getting soggy which I didn't personally enjoy. My fiancee got the curry fried rice which was also a huge portion. She said the flavor was good but "nothing to write home about" Prices were fair though. Overall was only 40 bucks. I have a feeling they do more business for takeout. Got takeout during COVID. My go to is usually pad see ew, and it was definitely tasteless and boring tasting. I was so utterly disappointed. I wish I'd gone to Thai Noodle Outlet nearby. I am sad that I strayed from them and gave the Silk Elephant a chance. The only good thing about the Silk Elephant is the indoor ambiance, but that's not an option right now without catching COVID. Don't be like me, full of regrets. Get great Thai food from Thai Noodle Outlet or from Kiin Lao & Thai Eatery. So much better, much more flavor. read more

Great Thai food! There are loads of Thai options around Pittsburgh, and tons of Asian food in Squirrel Hill. This place has some really interesting and unique options as well as a diverse menu. I decided to stick to my go-tos. Ordered the pad Thai (mild spice) with extra sauce and tofu as well as the Thai custard with coconut sweet sticky rice. Wow, they give you a huge portion of noodles for pad Thai! And it's very tasty as well. I asked them for some extra sauce so it wouldn't be dry, and they did not disappoint. This was a satisfying amount of sauce. Also, they gave me lots of peanuts (much more than most places) and perfectly followed some of the other instructions for my order. And, they added in large chunks of fried tofu. It was decently well soaked in the sauce and pretty tasty. Decent amount of eggs and bean sprouts. Overall, quite good. The Thai custard was also quite tasty. The custard itself was absolutely excellent. Good portion, perfect balance of sweetness, not too eggy, just a great treat. The rice was sticky and decent. Oddly, there were kernels of black rice in it (I've not seen this before in Thai sticky rice). There wasn't quite enough coconut topping/sweet milk. All in all, a very solid option for Thai food in Squirrel Hill. I definitely prefer their pad Thai over Thai and Noodle Outlet. Portions are quite large, prices decent. They have loads of unique tapas options, like corn cakes, mussels, and more. I'd recommend. read more

Tasty and competent preparation. Missing some glaring ingredients. A Thai basic, Nam Pla Prik was beyond their capabilities. Nowhere on site were Fresh Thai Chillies (Prik Kee Noo found. Their version of Larb (Ground meat salad was missing Mint leaves, short on Lemongrass, short on Roasted Rice powder and unlike 90% of Thai Restaurants World Wide, no large lettuce leaves were available. I do know what I am talking about, having worked in 1 best Thai Restaurant in Hawaii - Keos. I was schooled at the Mandarin Oriental Cooking School in Bangkok, owned and operated 2 Thai Restaurants for 18 years (just in case the restaurant responds condescendingly, which I already experienced. Love that this spot has Thai tapas! We enjoy sharing small plates and trying a variety of options, so this was perfect for us. The Siam Paragon was presented in a cool way with the jumbo shrimp being wrapped in crispy noodles. It was also my first time trying coconut sticky rice and I was pleasantly surprised. There are a lot of textures with the fruit, custard, sticky rice and coconut milk and the flavors combined into sweet, savory, and juicy. Definitely try if you haven't before! read more

I was in mood for authentic Thai food. I gave this place a chance with an order to go. Restaurant was dead when I went. Two young boys working. I am sure they are nice enough kids. But, their manager never taught them how to engage with customers coming in especially when working at a nice restaurant. Basic things like even a smile or a thank you for coming in would have been nice. But, not my restaurant and weak management. Not the boys fault. Next this restaurant is very hidden. Unless you have it on google map you probably will drive past it. Put a sign out that people notice. Again weak management unless they weren't allowed to do it. Now the food. I was very disappointed. Very plain tasting and almost tasteless. Now if you never ate authentic really good Thai food. Then you might not think this is any different than plain American pasta with an average pasta sauce. But if you want incredible Thai food this is not the place to go! The pros- They do give you big portions. Each dish is enough for two people. The location is safe. The food here is great. Very traditional thai food at a slightly higher price point. Their pad thai is a must try. The service is quick and you can get takeout from here very easily as well. I also think the restaurant is well decorated, it feels like an upscale restaurant inside. *Review for takeout during Covid I ordered the pad kee mao noodles with fried tofu and was surprised at how big the portion size was! It was enough food for 2-3 meals for me. My spice tolerance is pretty low and I hadn't eaten here before so I played it safe and got a spice level 2. The noodles were not spicy at all and the sauce had a bit of a sweet flavor to it so I'd recommend going higher to at least a 4 or 5. I liked how soft the noodles were and the tofu was well cooked too. -1 star because there weren't vegetables in my dish and the noodles were a bit too oily for my liking. When I finished my food, there was quite a bit of oil left dripping at the bottom of my takeout container. Next time I go, I'm going to remember to request extra vegetables in my entree and more spice. read more

Pad Thai + Thai Iced Tea is sometimes all you need and when I stopped here the other night with my friend we had a great meal. With COVID restrictions I felt that this place was safe, clean and really cared for their customers. They take your temperature with a touch less thermometer, employees were all wearing masks, they offered hand sanitizer and marked areas on the floor for foot traffic and social distancing. Now that I have lived in Bloomfield for several years, I often think about those places I miss going to on a regular basis when I lived in Regent Square. Walking up to Squirrel Hill for some of the best food in the city is one of them. Sure, I can still get there but you know how it is when you switch neighborhoods. I do get to Squirrel Hill now about once a month and it's so nice to revisit my old stomping grounds and fave spots. Silk Elephant is an excellent source when you have a Thai craving. The pad thai is some of the best in the city as is the pumpkin curry with grilled chicken. In addition, they have a nice tapas menu. The pesto and brie crostini is really yummy. Been coming here for a while now and the food is definitely their strong suit. I got their PAD THAI and PAD SEE EW and both were very good! However I ordered the Pad See Ew with shrimp and I only got 3 pieces of shrimp, which was extremely disappointing. The lunch special is also what makes this restaurant worth going to, since the price is pretty high regarding the amount of food they give. You get a mini salad/soup/spring roll with your lunch order. The service was also pretty bad. Our server was extremely unfriendly and rude, especially when taking our order. I am a fan of the food here and have been here several times. There is street parking close by and usually easy to find a spot.The curry is decent sized and spiciness is average. I have had several appetizers and never disappointed.The beer and wine selection is great. Silk Elephant is an average Thai restaurant, nothing unique in the food variety. However the thing that makes the restaurant is the atmosphere. The lighting and the set up is very pleasant and comfortable for evening dinners with friends - this is what stands out and I like most about this spot. But I must say if you go here on a busy weekend night like I did this past Saturday - the waitresses are very cold and super unfriendly. They had disgusted looks on their faces and our waitress barely came to our table twice. My friend asked the waitress the difference on the Thai beers offered and the waitress simply shrugged and gave a dirty look. We were never asked if we needed more beverages or how the food was. The prior time I was here I had great service. I don't know what it is but this last time made me not want to come back.
