Definitely recommend making a reservation. This place is very well lit and the volume for music is phenomenal. I'm able to hear the folks I came to be with without shouting and at a comfortable volume. The music is also so good! I am a big fan of the fact that there were numerous gluten free options on the menu that created an inclusive feeling with the friends I went out with. The drinks are very good and something fun, they've all got their own twist to them that I really enjoyed. My only complaint is going up to the bar to order when it's packed is a tough challenge and just feels like you're in everyone's way when there are people seated all around it. My wish is that there was a clear ORDER HERE section that didn't put me in another patrons way or space. Besides this, I like that after I do get my order in and go back to my table it is brought out to me at the table I've found myself at. Checked out Silk Road for the first time and had a great experience. Everyone liked both their drinks and their food. I have the tofu and it was perfect! Will definitely be going back just for that dish. The menu is pretty small but what I had I liked. The dumplings and noodles were enjoyed but others in my party. The setting is intimate and dark. Not a good option for large groups but would be a great date night location. The service was order at the bar which isn't my favorite but didn't have to wait in any long lines as some places with that type of service can be. Omg, this was my top dining experience during my trip to Portland! The dim lighting, edgey bar, amazing food, and friendly staff made for such an enjoyable evening! We were greeted by a super helpful host who found us seats at the bar, and even in their busy Thursday evening bustle, the bar staff were extraordinarily accommodating and kind. And, the drinks were crafted perfectly (I suggest the Sesame Street Colada..yum!). Our plates were all sooo yummy but the hand cut Chow Wow noodles are a must-try. Portland's bar scene is top notch, and this scene has food to rival its drinks. Silk Road makes this list. With the same owner as Lulu bar in SE Portland, I was excited to see this expansion. The interior is beautiful with booths, tables, mirrors, and a beautiful, arch display of their spirits. Lighting was warm and dim, but not too dark. We got the Salt and Pepper Calamari, Silk Dumplings, and Chow Wow Noodles. The food was great! It reminded me of a Thai-Chinese fusion and I was not mad. The rice noodles were a bit too mushy for my liking, but the flavors were great. Portions sizes are great for sharing, but also enough for a full meal. This was on a Saturday night. You order at the bar, and they'll bring you your food and drinks over. I would say my favorite was the drinks. I got to try their Taipei Milky Way (non-alcholic), Pandan Express, & one I forget the name of with chrysanthemum & lychee. The Taipei was creamy and delicious, perfect sweetness. The Pandan Express was a little more spirit-forward, which I like, but the special flavors weren't very strong. I loved the cocktail with chrysanthemum & lychee! The flavors lingered well after my sip. The food was pretty decent. The 6 of us ordered the wok'd rice, the chow wow noodles, the tofu, egg rolls, calamari, general tso's chicken, and the dumplings. Though the food was just your average Chinese cuisine with fancy names, I adored the amazing ambience they provide for the guests. The reason why I give such a negative score is because they charged us a 20% tip the next day without disclosing us beforehand, creating a lot of confusion to our party. They required us to order and pay for food at the bar BEFORE we even got the food, so we didn't think tipping was an option. We would've left a tip if they had provided us a receipt at the end of the night, but the bartender didn't even give us one upon the payment. Such a misleading way of practice. I've heard great things from friends as well as comments on SM about Silk Road and I was not disappointed. I was surprised by what I thought was a small but limited menu, only to discover that while short it was absolutely delicious. Not having to deal with pages of food items on the typical Asian restaurant menu, SR hit the mark. We ordered the cucumber salad and let me tell you this isn't your father's cucumber salad. It will definitely be a staple on our return visit. We also ordered Chow Wow Noodles (I thought I was eating Waygu), Silk Dumplings and Chili Wontons ( and both were killer). There are no waiters, but rather you cozy on up to the bar and give the bartender your drink and food order. The bartender asked if I had been to SR before, but if not, you are going to love your choices and he was absolutely right! The ambiance was great and the only other comment I would add is the cocktails which were expertly made and delicious were rather small for the price, but the rectangular shape clear ice cube was cool. Aesthetic and the lovely service team reign supreme at Silk Road. For non-locals, finding Silk Road may be the most significant challenge when hoping to spend time here. The nondescript sign and narrow space make it difficult to find for even neighborhood locals like me and my friends. The large patios at neighboring cider houses make it even more confusing at first, but, I like that they are somewhat conspicuous, since who doesn't like a journey?! The team says they will soon have an outdoor space, too, so these challenges should abate. Once inside, be prepared to awe at the aesthetic and warm design. The booths are cozy, and the bar top is ample for crowds. However, if you are spending time here during popular hours, you will be required to push through bar crowds, since counter service is the only way to order food and drink. To me, this is the most significant miss. Most other spaces offer QR code ordering for tables in this scenario, and, since bartenders are doing triple duty as drink makers, food senders, and number givers (for orders), there are quite a few misses that can occur during high stress and busy moments. Don't get me wrong, the team is talented, and I'm sure they can handle it. It's just... there are better ways to make this experience even more abundant for the guest. The food menu offers some of the best Chinese food that I have come across in Portland. I've had the chance to spend a few days here, and each time, everything was perfect. However, on busy days, be prepared to wait 20 minutes for drinks, and almost an hour for food. I'm sure things will improve with time, so my rating only reflects the benchmark for which things can be bettered. Unfortunately not a great experience for a lot of people tonight. I got in line around 9 pm. Got in the door around 10 pm. Almost all the food was sold out with a cucumber salad, Wok'd Rice, and ice cream available to order. I am willing to wait in very long lines for food/drinks. I understand that they are new. I understand that Eater just posted an article about them and gave them a lot of attention 2 days ago and they got slammed. Some of the issues are understandable, some are just plain negligent. Logistics: - From the outside it was obvious there were a few booths open, so why make people wait outside? - Following up on the above, it wasn't because they were trying to load balance the wait staff because you need to go to the bar to order. - Let people know you're running out of/are out of food. People can grab food somewhere else and come back for the drinks. It was very clear after getting inside that everyone had planned on ordering food. Letting people find out inside after waiting 1+ hours outside sets a bad tone. People will forgive growing pains if you at least communicate with them. - The couple in line behind me got more food than me. The couple in front of me had fewer options than me. It was all kinds of messed up. Food: I ended up ordering the Wok'd Rice and the Malaysian Fried Ice Cream dessert. I wasn't feeling the cucumber salad. - Wok'd rice ($16): A little on the dry side, had some nice bits of Chinese sausage, but honestly mediocre. The Eater article mentioned that these portions were meant to be shared, but the portion size was maybe 1.5 the size of a standard small rice bowl - Malaysian Fried Ice Cream: The outside of the dessert was similar to a churro. Fried nicely with a light texture, but otherwise bland in taste. Drinks: I ordered the Midnight Collisions: spiced rum, Jamaican rum, lemongrass coconut milk syrup, lemon, and soda water. I could only taste the soda water, lemon, and some rum. It was not good. I didn't want to try another drink. I ended up drinking a quarter of my drink and leaving the rest. The bartender and the woman bringing food out were friendly and nice. Hopefully, this is good for them in the long run. If they can fix all these things before the hype wears down they have a chance of being a new hot spot in The Pearl. I wanted to like this place, but I'm not sure if I'd give them another chance. I left thinking that I would have been better off going to Taco Bell and then heading to Pink Rabbit or Teardrop Lounge for drinks. I've had Lulu on my radar, but now I wonder if I should bother checking it out since it's the same owner. If you feel inclined to go to this place, I'd recommend waiting at least a month to let them sort things out. Maybe six. If they survive, they should have ironed out all the issues.
