Everytime we come down to the Annandale area, we're reminded of Silver Diner which we started eating at years ago. It seems, since the 90s and Jerry McGuire times. While staying nearby, I was ready to write this place off again. I'm glad I didn't. Service was great and more importantly, breakfast was plate-licking good. I had the bison huevos rancheros. The eggs were delicately and deliciously done on top to run into the hash of meat, beans, veggies, queso fresco. Mix it all up and you've done one heck of a breakfast dish. Okay, here's my confession. Oldie diner style, in silver chrome building, not my taste. I avoided this place, because quite frankly, its a diner. One day, my friend posted pictures of her food from this place, and i thought, well, it must be good then! I went and saw brussel sprouts as one of their appetizers and I was hooked! I loved there was a good size portion of it, even though it was $8.99, with slices of dried apricots and cranberries. One thing I would say, it is not something you want to eat at your desk at work. Wow, this place has really revamped their menu since the last time I was here couple years ago. I was hungry, so I decided to come over to have dinner around 10 pm, drawn in by the glamorous Yelp food pictures. Parking was easy at this time of night--the front side of the restaurant has several speed bumps and a metal plate, plus mostly handicap and takeout customer parking, and a couple of regular spots. I didn't see the backside, but I'm assuming they have plenty of parking there too. Outside the restaurant, if you listen carefully, the seemed to be playing an interview of some chef describing how they prepare the food. On the inside of course, you get to hear whatever music they happen to be playing at the time. They had some holiday decor still up near the entrance. After waiting a few moments, we were greeted by the host and quickly brought over to our table. Looking over their new menu, I was deciding between their Pesto Burger and their Teriyaki Portobello Mushroom dish... Eventually the want for the burger won out. Also tried a cup of their Corn Crab Chowder. The chowder was meh. But the Pesto Burger--the Pesto Burger came with sweet potato fries and red onion and pickle slices on the side. The buns were lightly spread with pesto on top and bottom. Beneath the top bun was a slice of tomato--it was there, but didn't seem particularly useful other than to help balance out the pH of the whole thing. Below the tomato was the layer of greens sitting atop the goat cheese covered medium burger. The roasted red pepper hunk finished off the bottom with the bottom bun. Definitely a great tasting burger the way the flavors melded together so nicely. Yes--I want more! Their sweet potato fries were pretty nicely done too--a touch of salt, and not overly fried--not too crispy like a double fried chicken wing or a Jason's Deli Flatbread Cracker, and not soggy like an orphaned floppy McDonald's French Fry. Okay so I was SOOOO excited to get milkshakes tonight, spent the whole day talking about it to my coworkers, I was so hurt and sad by my experience. We ordered milkshakes at 11 and they didn't come until we asked at about it at 11:45 and the wrong ones came so we requested our right ones and they were made very poorly because they server said the desert chef went home so he made them. After the shakes were dropped off we discovered a bug, with no wings so it didn't just fly on top, crawling in the whip cream, and the other was made incorrectly. Then our salad came out about 11:50, almost an hour after ordered, JUST A SALAD but we had requested blue cheese dressing and it came with none but the bug had ruined are appetite. Let's be real. Silver Diner is an excellent place to visit after a night of heavy drinking. And if you get the right server, it leads to a really entertaining brunch hour. I have a hunch that the breakfast food tastes better than the lunch food---kinda like a burger at IHOP (don't do it!). I have no complaints about breakfast though. My friend who got a reuben didn't like it due to way too much sauerkraut. If you want a car, they will give you a car--even if you are a bunch of twenty-somethings; you just have to ask! I gave them another chance after my last experience. I'm pleased to say that, this time, I had a great experience! I came in this morning for breakfast before a long day of teaching. I ordered eggs sunny-side-up, bacon, and buttermilk pancakes. The eggs and bacon were cooked perfectly, and the pancakes were huge and fluffy! I was so pleased. The portions were so generous that I wondered if I was going to be able to eat everything, but I cleaned my plate. I also had coffee and orange juice, both of which were perfectly delicious. The staff was attentive and delivered prompt service, so even though I had a limited amount of time to enjoy my meal, I did not feel rushed in the least. Silver Diner is a cut above a typical diner. This place is fast, friendly, fairly inexpensive, and it has surprisingly good food. Unlike most diners, this place doesn't just reheat frozen products. They serve most of your typical diner fare, but do go out of their way to make the food fresh and with higher quality ingredients. There is usually a rotating seasonal menu, and they make an effort to tell you from where the food is sourced. Unlike other diners, Silver Diner also make an effort to provide a number of healthier menu options, too, including fresh salads. There is a gluten-free menu as well. Like most diners, they serve breakfast all day. The atmosphere is a sort of retro-50s feel, with chrome decor and a mini-jukebox at each booth. This place always feels clean and you can see the kitchen. The service is fast and very friendly. Even on late Sunday mornings, we haven't waited more than 10 minutes for a table or booth. On weekends, the restaurant is full of families after sports or church, and there is a pretty extensive kids menu. They also offer shakes, which are absolutely enormous. If I had to provide one critique, I would say that for a diner, their coffee is only OK. They offer bottomless refills, which is nice, but the coffee isn't the most rich or flavorful - it's basically your standard diner coffee. Some of the menu items that I would recommend are: -The American Favorite Breakfast (basically a homemade Denny's Grand Slam) -Eggs Benedict -Biscuits -Triple Decker Club (surprisingly high quality) -Sliders But this is a diner, you can pretty much order whatever your favorite standard menu item is, and it's typically very good. Great place for breakfast! Even though it was busy, we were seated within 5 mins. The waiter was very friendly and made us feel right at home. The atmosphere is really fun and casual. My daughter loved the old fashioned jukeboxes. The food came out fairly quickly and it was delicious! Probably the best breakfast potatoes I've ever had hands down. Came here with my parents the other day. I got a milkshake (very berry shake) and the eggs benedict. Food was good and what I would expect for a diner, more on the upper end. But the service and attentiveness really shined in the visit -- despite them being really busy for a Saturday at noon I was sat quickly and was checked on a couple of times before my parents sat down who joined me late. The server was also very very nice and helped work through options on the menu along with making sure waters were always topped off. We came to Silver Diner for brunch on the recommendation of our friends. My husband and I grew up in NY/NJ, which are two states with lots of diners, so we were pleasantly impressed with our first diner experience since moving to northern Virginia. The menu is extensive, with clear notations of vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free items! The food was delicious, and service was attentive. My husband loved the caramel french toast (challah bread, salted caramel drizzle, powered sugar), which he drenched in maple syrup. I ate the tomato-mozzarella sandwich (fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, romaine, basil pine nut pesto, balsamic drizzle, roasted red pepper on ciabatta bread), along with a side of roasted vegetables. The roasted vegetables consisted of roasted brussel sprouts, sweet potato, and beets. YUM! Side note: I really appreciate that the crispy fries and sweet potato fries are not marked as vegetarian or vegan on the menu. I've been going to Silver Diner for years and mostly this location lately. While I know I should appreciate their efforts to be healthier, the food just doesn't taste as good. I used to love their open faced turkey sandwich but when I got it recently, it was so disappointing. They need to bring back the old bread! The old fashion bacon! The type of food you would expect from a 1950s style diner! And my final gripe, please turn down the air conditioner!! They make the place sooo cold!! I love going to my local Silver Diner and the service and food was consistently excellent. When I went today with my family, everything was as normal, but our server seemed almost awkward. I didn't mind at all because they were a very friendly person and I understand they could have been new to the job which is fine. However, the problem occurs when our server incorrectly labeled my father's wife as my and my siblings mother, which made us extremely uncomfortable because she is 100% not a mother/motherly figure to us. Although our server was trying to be friendly, and it may have seemed as if we came in as a traditional family, I believe it was a tad bit out of line to assume such things, especially in this day and age. Not only that, but our server completely forgot my sister's order. They took her order, and inputted it into the tablet, but only brought her food once we flagged them down again. It wasn't the biggest problem as the establishment kindly paid for her meal due to the inconvenience, but of all my times eating here previously, I've never had such an uncomfortable experience. Before I say anything and although I love this place, I was not expecting to spend as much money as I did so make sure you READ THE MENU. They've really jacked up their prices and overcharge you for every little thing. I got a create your own egg white omelette with spinach, peppers, onions, and tomatoes. Each topping was a whole extra dollar which was outrageous, and they gave me cheese although I didn't ask for it. The side of potatoes were good and I got a fruit cup which cost $4 for like 8 little pieces of fruit. I also got a side of sausage which was good, but it was also expensive and they need more options. Overall I ended up paying close to $27 including a cup of coffee but not tip. Everything tasted good per usual, but the food is not worth the price is marketed for. Just went to the diner last night. Not our first time, but we rarely go and everytime we do we find the same thing. This time: we ordered the turkey with roasted vegetables. The roasted vegetables were excellent, the mashed potatoes were ok. salad had frozen (again) cucumbers in it. they delivered our main courses 2 (exactly the same) well one was the turkey we ordered, the other was chicken nuggets.... sent that back. We usually go to Silver Diner in fair lakes but this one was closer this time. Generally we love Silver Diner because it has vegan options as well as options for carnivores like me. I asked for the flank steak like I usually do, medium cooked. It actually came out extremely well done where I couldn't even chew it. I asked for a new one and they brought me another well done steak well maybe medium well but definitely not medium. Not only that but my friend had already finished eating. So I was basically left to eat by myself. Lastly, this was one of the worst steaks I've had. The meat was full of nerve endings and extremely hard to chew. I am not sure what happened to the quality of the meat but this is subpar. They did offer me a discount for the steak. Eventually I did ask for a full refund though Because the steak did not even come with the onion straws. This time it came with caramelized onions! Silver Diner is a chain restaurant with a very serious determination for all of their restaurants look and feel very much the same. As far as I can tell, they have succeeded. Thus, the only real way to distinguish one Silver Diner from another is the service quality. I don't believe I have ever had a bad service experience at this SD location, but I have had several very good ones. The Yelp rating process does not allow for a 3.5 rating, but that is right where this rating would be. When I ate here on Monday evening, I happened to have a good server, but everything else was very average for Silver Diner because that is what they are aiming for. Wow! What can I say? This Silver Diner is by far the best one I've ever dined at! I was greeted by the host who was extremely polite and seated me at a booth. Our server, Jacob, greeted us with extreme enthusiasm which put a smile to my face. Went here for a late night date with my husband. Our server, Daniel, was exceptional! He went above and beyond to provide us with recommendations to our preferences (we're picky), knew the menu inside and out, was fast and efficient making sure all of our needs were met. The food was good. Not great - but good. Burger was over cooked (medium rare turned into medium-well) but overall the presentation and professionalism was present. Great service always at this location. My son loves the kid's menu here and there are alot of healthy options for the entire family. I love the new farm to table options. I got the goat cheese omelet with wheat toast, very yummy. The menu will please kids and adults alike. They even have some good virginia wines by the glass and some nice beer selections. We come here about once a week and always are happy with food and service. If something is not right, they will fix it. One time the fish I ordered was a bit underdone. Was here for dinner last night, and was disappointed by the service here. The dinner was fine, but the wait staff was awful! Our waiter, Chris, asked for our drink order, and took that and as soon as he came back, he wanted to know if we were ready to order yet. We told him to give us a few minutes since we only just opened our menus. He comes back and takes our orders which wer the Adobo Chicken with Pasta and Veggies. They were great, but watching not only him, but the most of the wait staff just hanging at the different stations talking to each other and not taking care of the customers who were waiting to place their orders or pay their checks. Not sure if they were just High School or College Students on Vacation, but the management team needs to step up and set things right with the wait staff to ensure that they will get repeat customers in the future.
