Hidden gem located right next to the Kansas City Convention Center! Got the Chicken Melt and Fruit this time. The bread of the Chicken Melt was perfectly buttered & toasted; the chicken salad filling was decent, nothing special. Fruit was fresh & refreshing. Last year, when I came for a conference, I believe I got a Patty Melt, which was tasty. Prices are so affordable, it's kind of crazy in this day and age. Service is fast. Ambiance is fine: it's a diner. 7/10 would recommend for the unbeatable prices & convenient location! I don't think this is a spot you should go out of your way to come to, but when you're looking for food options near the convention center, this seems like a good one. read more

Cafe with cafeteria vibes? Strange but understandable in a downtown location where many might seek to solve the lunchtime time crunch with something simple. For what you get, the price is alarming - $5 worth of tater tots amounts to roughly 15 tots. We paid $30 for two sandwiches, one fruit cup, 15-ish tots and two fountain sodas. No chips, no pickles, nothing fancy. That said, the sandwich itself was solid. We both got the same sandwich because it was what sounded best. Note that the menu is hour-blocked, you can't get "breakfast" items after sometime after 10am and before 11am, it switches to lunch only. Given the small number of breakfast items even available, this was a bit surprising. What is this place? I wouldn't quite call it a restaurant nor a convenience store, although I think they're probably going for both. We asked if they buy their bread or croissants used for breakfast locally, like from a real bakery, but they were honest by responding all that was bought in bulk at Sam's Club. The food was as expected for being pre-frozen, pre-packaged crap: bad! The biscuits, although I'm sure were frozen before they microwaved them, still felt and tasted raw. Gravy was out of a package: just add water. The croissant sandwich was squished and probably bought that way by the owners, simply to just microwave them for service. The sausage was, well.....you get the theme. The only positive was that my over easy eggs were cooked perfect and the company I was with. Fantastic service! I came for the free wi-fi and a snack :) We were staying at the Marriott across the street and I was tired of salty hotel food that didn't feel healthy. The ladies who work here are mighty friendly and helpful. I enjoyed my Veggie Wrap, French Fries and Naked Juice. Great location (if you're here for convention) with good food with reasonable price. I ordered bacon cheeseburger and it was surprisingly good. I wasn't expecting anything from this place because it was so random but the patty was delicious and the bacon was well-cooked - not crispy but not too soft either which is perfect for burger. It was $4.95 and if you want sides it's $2 each. Wish it was like a dollar more expensive but comes with fries. The buns look sad but they're actually really tasty, I was surprised. I stopped by this morning on the way to work and picked up the Breakfast Special of eggs, 4 pieces of toast and sausage for $3.65 which was ready and in my hands in 3 minutes. The prices are simply amazing and the food is always good. The last item I had for lunch was the Bacon Cheeseburger lunch special which was cooked well and tasted great. The bacon was crisp, burger and fries were good and once again it was FAST. The soups are good and the chili was warm on a cold day although it could use a little more spice for my taste. This is a small locally owned 'diner' with good food, great prices and fast service. If you work Downtown Kansas City, MO there is no place around with a better breakfast and lunch is pretty good to :) read more

This is a nice and completely convenient little cafe in the Trader's On Grand building downtown. I love the super cheap Sunrise Special breakfast, two eggs, bacon and toast for $4 and the completely reasonable $5.25 specials during the week. Plenty of yummy dineresque dishes are available at good prices. Space is at a little bit of a premium especially when they're getting a rush and sometimes it's not the cleanest. It's not dirty by any means, but sometimes when busy the staff won't be able to wipe your table down right away. It's not a big deal for me, but I want to throw it out there in case is a big deal for any of you. If you work in the area (like I do) and you need a nice quick bite to eat, the Silver Spoon is a good place to be. read more

We walked against freezing temperatures, ankles numb and noses runny. We followed the wonderful smells of bacon and eventually reached the Silver Spoon. I've discovered this spot for a few years now due to working downtown. It's very easy to overlook, but thankfully some co-workers showed me. I've had their breakfast and lunch here numerous time since it's a short walk for me from my job. I think their food is honestly the best bang for your buck within my proximity anyways. Also, the prices are very cheap compared to other establishments downtown. It can get a little busy during peak hours though. The staff are extremely friendly! I haven't had a bad time here yet to be honest. I used to always get their special on Wednesday's "Angel Pasta" and it was delicious. This place reminds me of a gas station restaurant out in the country more so than a diner in the middle of downtown. Omelet was decent but the setup was hard to get over. Certainly the most 'meh' dining experience I had during my visit to Kansas City, at least the Silver Spoon was also the least expensive-- so all in all not completely terrible. The breakfast menu here is pretty basic and extremely cheap: a western omelette for $3.50?? I thought it must have been a typo! Nope; the prices really are that low-- but they're also a la carte, so if you want potatoes and toast to go with an omelette, for example, the price goes up a couple of bucks. Still, I got a meal here with (crappy) coffee for about $6 total. This place reminded me more of a public school cafeteria than a diner or "cafe". Queue up at the register to place your order and pay, and after a few minutes they'll call out your name to let you know the order is ready to pick up. Everything is served in cheap styrofoam clamshells with plastic utensils. Honestly, I thought the Silver Spoon Cafe was a step down from breakfast at McDonald's. Well, the ladies at the counter were mighty friendly, but unfortunately you can't blend up friendly and use it to inject some flavor into an otherwise bland lunch. In another life, there was a Silver Spoon in the building I worked in near Union Station. It wasn't great, but there were a few menu items I identified as favorites and the staff knew me by name. I'm guessing that is the compelling case for this place. As another review said, it is exactly like school lunch. It is a long counter and some motherly lunch ladies serving up today's special and some ala carte selections. My visit was during the KC Veg-head challenge, so I went right for the veggie wrap. Perhaps this isn't a fair representation of the place, but it was uninspiring at best. They took some random raw vegetables, seemingly right off the salad bar, slapped them in a poorly-wrapped tortilla and then put a slop of ill-matching honey mustard on one end. When people feel pity on vegetarians, this is the bland culinary afterthought they think of. Oh, and the lentil soup had ham in it. It wasn't billed as ham and lentil soup. I suppose this is some ammunition for detractors of KC's veggie options. We put meat in stuff without even thinking about it, and despite ordering a veggie wrap, the staff didn't mention that the soup I ordered with it contained meat. Lentils are a magical thing, and this was unholy. I might forgive this if it was cheap, but it wasn't. If I would have assembled the same ingredients at a salad bar, it probably would have been a couple of dollars. Poorly wrapped up in this tortilla, it was $5, and adding the soup made it over $8. Do yourself a favor and keep on walking to one of the other amazing options within a few blocks. read more

Good cheap breakfast. Only open on weekdays though. If you are in town for a convention and are looking for a place to eat lunch or breakfast, and want to get in and out, this is the place. Just don't expect to hit this place on the weekends. The owners really should check the convention calendar and stay open on weekends when a big convention is in town. We had 5k people in town for our convention, and were often looking for quick eats on the weekend. This place would have been packed since it was right by the convention center. Anyways, you walk up to the counter (which has a variety of desserts and treats) to place your order and pay, grab a table, and wait for your name to be called out. Their menu is mostly sandwiches, and burgers, with some other specials (the special that day was a cajun-spinach pasta). Breakfast looked good, but I missed by a few minutes since they cut off at 10:30). I thought the prices were reasonable considering the area, and the food was ok. I was hoping the sandwich I had would be awesome, and that I had found a hidden gem that was very unassuming but had great simple food. I would have given it 5 stars had the customer service been better. The girl at the counter was very rude and acted annoyed. The second time I went in I decided to ask her what was wrong and she said it was more crowded than usual and it was just her working the register. The food here is ok, comparable to a hospital cafeteria. My biggest complaint is they have a low quality generic brand ketchup and not Heinz. I guess they get busy so they take your name and your order. They are by the convention center area. I had biscuits n gravy with two eggs on top.. Nice fresh moist biscuits with piping hot pepper gravy (cooking hot). But a little spicey was so tasty and it stayed hot to the last bite! I had to have carrot cake to go but had to taste it and omg...the best I think I've ever had. The sour cream frosting was not overly sweet, perfect. I'll have that later. Hubby had the special breakfast eggs, with potatoes and bacon. Was good but he was disappointed that the Heinz ketchup dispenser had funky (not Heinz) ketchup in it ha ha. He would have taken the packets Ya know?? But then we sitting there and I mentioned that review with the the roast beef n turkey Sammy .. So he ordered that for later ( and a chocolate chip cookie). Well of course we had to test them both. Only half Sammy left! That was the best sandwich we just could'nt put it down!! The toasted bread to meat to fixings ratio is spot on! This place is an incredibly convenient walk from the convention hotels. I was part of an invasion of a rather large group, and I was impressed with how quickly the staff rang people up and processed orders. I had the three-cheese omelette and it was ready in about 5 minutes. It was perfectly cooked through with a tasty mix of cheeses.
