Silverado Escondido Memory Care is a truly wonderful facility. I was the live in caregiver for a very dear woman who became one of my most cherished friends and forever family to my young son and I. When it was time to take that next step and her family needed to choose the best option for a memory care facility their search finally ended when they found Silverado Memory Care in Escondido. Now that my dear friend has been living there she is so happy every time we come visit her. We just came to see her last night and she was relaxed while watching a funny movie with other residents. She and some of the others were laughing out loud about this particular movie. Recently one of her daughters attended one of their many fun events when they had an Elvis impersonator. I saw the pictures and could tell they had an amazing time! They were dancing and singing and interacting with "Elvis." Every time we have popped in for a visit and no matter what time of day or night everyone seems happy and well cared for. We have had good experiences with everyone that works there. They have all been kind, warm, friendly and helpful. My dear friend loves living there. She is at a stage of Alzheimer's where she has a need for a lot of wandering and walking and she is free to do so at this facility. She can also go outside in their beautiful yard and enjoy some sun and fresh air. I am grateful we can pop in to see her there anytime and know she is happy and doing so well. Silverado Memory Care Escondido is AMAZING!! There is no better place A family friend that was on his own was diagnosed with Vascular Dementia. We began a very long journey down a path we had no experience in. We first moved him into assisted living facilities. He was in assisted living for 2 months and they said he needed to go to memory care. The assisted living place he was in was nice so we moved him into their memory care. Needless to say the memory care was not treating him well. We noticed he felt very agitated and at this point in his disease he was nonverbal so he could not tell us what was wrong. He was a wonderer would walk all the time being it was a small area he kept trying to escape. We started noticing how others were being cared for and knew we had to get him out of there and find a place where he would be well cared for and would be happy. We researched and made a list of highly rated memory care facilities and we began a 2 week tour of many memory care facilities in Escondido, Vista and Rancho Bernardo. We had a list of things we were looking for to find to right facility. 1. Resident to staff ratio by California law it's a max of 5 to 1 we both agreed was way too many for even a highly trained nurse. 2. The attitude of the staff towards the residents 3. Affordability must stay on his budget 4. Cleanliness of the facility. How does it smell? Are the residents clean? 5. Do the residents look happy, is there activities for them to do. 6. Distance from our house being we will be visiting regularly. 7. Reading reviews on line on many different sources As the tours went on we came to understand there is allot of large companies that own multiple facilities and are bought and sold sometimes yearly. It is big business and with that profits can easily become the priority over patient care. You could tell corners were cut, understaffed, and untrained. High employee turnover is a major red flag. Because Silverado had the highest price they were the last one we toured mostly out of curiosity. As soon as we walked in the front door we could tell it was different. Every business has a culture and you feel it when you enter. Very welcoming staff. Many of the staff members have been there over 20 years. If you retain good people it means they are happy and will go the extra mile for the residents. Silverado is clean, organized, daily managers meeting as a former business owner I know how important this is. The lowest resident to caregiver ratio. All others were 5 to 1 California maximum. He liked to walk all the time. He was able to walk all over the facility and walk around outside in the beautiful gardens with paths, setting areas, fruit tree. It was so peaceful and relaxing. The food is really good and presented to the residents like they were going to a very nice restaurant to eat. Fast forward over a year later and hundreds of visits, nothing has changed. Same staff, same clean caring place. And a feeling when you leave from a visit every time that we made the right choice on his care. read more

Although my story doesn't have a happy ending, given his condition, there is no place I would have rather had my dads final months be spent. My dad has suffered from Alzheimer's for about 4 years; however, the past year he transitioned to late-stage Alzheimer's. The events leading up to his residency at Silverado were very frustrating. We had him in the geriatric ward at a hospital temporarily and then moved him into an assisted living facility in Poway. The facility was nice and they were close, but they just weren't set up to handle someone in dad's condition. In August we moved dad into Silverado after researching multiple facilities. It wasn't inexpensive by any means, but we initially had only planned on keeping him there for a month, or so. After the first month, it became apparent that this would likely be his forever home. We were very pleased with the care that dad received and how the staff made sure that my mom was able to visit and do virtual meetings; however, the cost wasn't sustainable for us. Silverado worked with my mom to get the payment down to an affordable amount and it seemed things were great. Last Wednesday we received a call that it was being recommended that we moved dad into hospice care to make him comfortable in his declining health. Silverado sent a representative who I believe was named Nick to our house to answer all of our questions and to go over the information. Nick was very professional and sympathetic to our situation. The very next day (Christmas Eve) we received another call this time from Kelly stating that dad had tested positive for COVID-19 and we were told that he had been moved to a secluded room and that we could come do a window visit. Although the window visit was difficult for us, I'm glad that we were afforded an opportunity to come see him Christmas Day. Tuesday we got a call letting us know that he was comfortable, but that his health was declining, so we made arrangements to go see him the following day. We again showed up and were escorted to the window where a staff member was able to let us see and talk to dad via FaceTime. Although he wasn't awake, I know he heard everything we had to say. Dad ended up passing away about six hours later. I am so happy the way that my dad was taken care of at Silverado. The entire staff we interacted with here is simply amazing especially during these tough times with what's going on around the world and as I previously mentioned, I don't think we could have found a better place for dad. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart for making dad's stay comfortable and for taking care of him. I want to give a special thanks to Claudia. Claudia was my dads nurse from the beginning until the end. Both my mom and my dad spoke very highly of her and Im glad that you and my dad got to share each other's friendship even if only for a little while. read more

The tour experience was impressive and I have already shared my experience with family and friends! As we walked through the building I saw how they enrich the lives of those with dementia. Some of my favorite things to know about this community.... -The courtyard goes all around the property and it's all gated so your loved one is safe. -I especially loved the calendar on the monitor as you walk into the building. I also love the big paper calendar in the main living room area. -I love the fact that the staff have been there for a long time and I value consistency and teamwork in a community. -The facility was very clean and welcoming and spacious. -The fish tanks, dogs, and bunnies are an excellent touch to the pet therapy that they provide. -I love their outdoor gardening section. it's very welcoming and healthy looking. -The neighborhood of where facility is located is extremely peaceful and quiet. read more

My father has been in their care for 2 1/2 years. He just passed away a few days ago. I can't begin to tell you the love and care and support that he and I received from everyone there. They took such good care of him and loved him so much. Hospice was amazing as well. They checked on him every 10 minutes for days around the clock. Well here I am to write about my experiences at this Silverado Memory Care facility. With a little background I had worked at one of these facilities back 15 years ago in Encinitas. When my mother needed to be transitioned into a facility to support her & care for her well being. I guess things may have changed but what a true disappointment it is to me. I was never heard as a family member in regard to address many situations at Silverado Escondido. We checked my mother in due to the fact that we thought these were the professionals who could provide her the best care for her dementia and that she would be safe. Unfortunately this was far from the truth. I will let you know (some) of the caregivers were out of this world, working with my mother with such care & compassion. But there were some that failed. But across the board this was not the same for me, with the interactions with other staff including the Director/Administrator. I felt belittled and felt like I was chastised whenever I brought issues to her. She also called me "Babe", I have a name and not many people at Silverado/Escondido could pronounce my name correctly. It is so easy to say Den-ah (Dena). I will just list the following impressions I had occur while there. A) Never talk down to me, respect is earned and not just given. I am always a person to apologize if I may have e offended someone's feelings. But to speak to me as if I was your employee was inconsiderate. B) Someone overheard my conversation with someone on the phone, and was upset that I was upset that my mother was left unattended in the dining room with only one staff member watching over the residents. She got up because she thought she could walk & she fell again. I was advised by the administrator that and I quote "Your mother will fall again ". Well that is not reassuring news to hear. In the midst of the hospital visit a nurse showed me my mother's stomach that had a huge rash from lack of care & proper cleaning when changing her. All I heard from Silverado Escondido from the nurses was these things happened. It should never happen if you are properly cleaning a resident. We were charged for incontinence products. Apparently my mother would tear through diapers off in the night I thought someone could provide the pull up's that I asked for over & over again. C) We had a care team meeting, and we were told my mother is declining and we should move her to Amber hills for less stimulus & less activities that would be too much for her. But numerous times I would visit her and blaring music was on. D) I had a male LVN who was upset that I was upset that finally my mother's wheelchair had arrived ( after I called the company to arrange drop off) she was still in the borrowed one and the new one was in her room still. I was berated by this nurse! Very unnecessary. I am a person to apologize if I was wrong. But truly I was not wrong! I gave you the most precious thing, my mother to care for. But she did not receive this. When we transferred her to her new chair the seat cushion was soaked all the way through. With urine still on the wheelchair. It is really upsetting to know that we made the best decision for my mother. Again I am writing this because so much happened & while still mourning my mother's death. I should not feel ignored. I was told to call if I needed anything. All I did was call! I did have some response from some great caring people. But when I asked to be called back, my requests were not answered. Except from a Lisa B. & Leigh (VP of this facility). Every other call I had has been ignored. I had called to ask about a missing heirloom that may have fallen off my wrist, no response & left a message for a hospice nurse at the facility to call me. I did have a conversation with the manager of Hospice Adriana was very kind! I know this was such a long post, but I feel I was not heard!!!!! read more

I recently placed one of my clients with a brain injury at this facility where she was transferred from a skilled nursing facility who's family stated she was "withering away sitting in front of a tv all day, isolated and alone in her room". I had previously toured this facility and built a relationship with several staff members including Rick Topete, Regional Community Ambassador, Jenny Jacobs, Nexus Program Director, Shanyn Chapman, Director of Community Sales and many more. Members of this team have been with this facility for many years. Something to look for when placing a client or loved one. Continuity in care is very important. Now my client is willingly participating in their daily activities, she has come out of her shell and I recently had the pleasure of listening to her sing at a holiday event. It's not shining and new, but the care and the entire staff are second to none . My family like so many others , had to make the tough choice to move my Father from his beloved home into a memory care . We did not take this move lightly, we visited 12 memory care homes . ( Silverado was not one of them ) We had a horrible experience at another brand new, beautiful , resort style memory care . It was a nightmare! The care was horrible , under trained , short staffed and quite frankly unsafe . After many sleepless nights we found Silverado , from day one the weight was lifted from our shoulders . The entire Silverado team is well trained, caring, compassionate, loving and professional. We visited at all times of the day and night , during meals and activities, each and every time he was clean , fed , well cared for and loved . Wonderful place with outstanding loving care. While Silverado Is not one of the newer places in town, it proved to be the best place for my Mom. My Mom just passed away this spring and was at Silverado for almost 3 years. She had no serious illness other than dementia & memory loss and sadly lost the ability to walk - even though she always thought she could. My Mom was a bit difficult to handle at times, but the entire Silverado staff was able to manage her so very well. She was their Jersey girl, with a bit of a Jersey attitude; but she left this world a happy person, and I have Silverado & their staff to thank for that. When my Mom first needed to go into a care facility, my husband & I visited Silverado and decided to place my Mom somewhere else. After three months, and it wasn't working out, I took her to Silverado, and it's the best move I was able to make. When you watch the staff there at work, it's amazing that they're able to keep everything in such good clean order, with all the residents also being very well attended to. There are a lot of special needs people there, and they seem to be able to handle it all. So - If you don't need a new, fancy place for your loved one to live, but you're looking good loving care, Silverado is the place. read more

My father has been at Silverado since October 2018. I moved him out of another memory care facility where his health had rapidly declined over a period of several months. He was over-medicated, due to behavioral issues which the staff could not handle, and unable to walk, due to being overly sedated. Two things impressed me about the move to Silverado. First, when I described his behavioral issues and over-medication to the family ambassador at Silverado, she didn't flinch. She assured me that they handle problems like his on a daily basis and was confident that he would do well there. It was shocking because all of the other facilities (Silverado is the 8th facility that I have toured) wanted to evaluate him beforehand to "see if he would be a good fit in the facility." You can read into that statement as: "we want to make sure he isn't going to be a problem for us." The ambassador's unfaltering reaction to my father's issues, backed up by Silverado's eviction record, which is something you should ask for from each facility you tour, told me that Silverado was well prepared to handle almost anything. Handling behaviors, rather than forcing families to make an awful decision between treating such behaviors with medication or finding another place to live, is something that everyone deserves and should be the guiding philosophy at any memory care facility. The second thing about the move to Silverado that made an impression on me was the presence of an on-site medical staff. There is a medical director (a UCSD doctor), a team of RN's with at least one RN on-site 24 hours a day, in addition to the care-givers who carry out the activities of daily living such as showers, toileting, etc. This kind of hierarchy does not exist at many memory care facilities. My father was started a slow regimen of medication reduction following our first visit with the medical director. The process took about two months during which time the care givers, nurses and other staff members did an exceptional job of handling his behaviors without reverting back to those medications. Their philosophy is copious amounts of patience rather than copious amounts of medications. Not once in the last two months has my father been given a medication to address aggression in spite of the fact that he has displayed some aggressivity here and there. Instead, staff at Silverado have just handled the issues, without medication, and just as the ambassador said they would. As a result of these efforts my father's quality of life has rebounded in a remarkable manner. He is more alert, able to participate in activities, able to once again feed himself and to walk under his own power. These past two months at Silverado have been truly transformative. There are a lot of other aspects of Silverado Escondido that have left an impression on me. For instance, the RN's and caregivers do a lot of charting which helps the staff quickly address medical issues which they can then bring up with the family and doctors. That ultimately translates to a better quality of life for your loved one. I love the fact that the facility is a one-story building with a very "open" feeling. There is a tremendous amount of sunlight coming through the doors that lead out to a backyard area with trees, green grass, walking paths and a rather spectacular view of the east Escondido hills. I've also been impressed with the impact that the resident animals at Silverado make on everyone's lives, especially the five therapy dogs who run around, sleep on chairs, sit on people's laps and make people smile. Surprisingly, in spite of the animals and other health-related issues such as incontinence, Silverado is remarkably clean. The facilities manager and his staff do a great job keeping it that way. And finally, along the same vein, the hygiene of the residents is also excellent, which is not an easy thing to do. It takes a tremendous about of time and effort to do properly and Silverado does it well. My recommendation, for anyone looking into memory care, is to take a tour several places and then compare them with Silverado Escondido. I guarantee you will see and feel a difference. Spend time watching the staff interact with the residents. Get a feeling for the severity of diseases that the staff at Silverado are handling on a daily basis; it will inspire you to have confidence that these awesome people will be able to handle whatever comes their way. Ask to just sit and observe; you will learn a lot. I would have chosen Silverado in the first place, had I toured it, and in spite of the fact that they are a little more expensive than most memory care facilities. However, and I can't overstate this, the care your loved one receives in exchange for that added cost is absolutely invaluable. They get 5-stars for creating a home for my father, transforming his quality of life in a remarkable fashion, and for making a huge impact on my own sanity. read more

The care here is exceptional. Truly, truly exceptional. I cannot begin to thank the folks here enough for the dedicated attention they paid to my Grandfather during his time at Silverado. Alzheimers is a devastating disease for the afflicted and their families. We had such peace of mind knowing that my Grandpa was well taken care of, that we could visit him on a moments notice, and that the staff would treat him with respect. My Grandpa eventually lost his battle with the disease after several years, but he passed away with dignity and in peace. You could not do better for a loved one than Silverado. read more

I have a parent who has been at Silverado Escondido for nearly 3 years now. Finding a place for a loved one is not easy, and it is a maze of decisions to decide what priorities are most important to you. There is no perfect place. I chose and would still choose Silverado because my parent is lovingly and respectfully cared for at each level of decline she moves through. I visited 9 different memory care residences, and if memory issues are the primary need for 24 hour care, you should be specific when looking for this type of residence, specifically memory care. My first impression visiting, was that EVERYONE smiled, and said hello. It has remained a consistent and welcoming environment. This is everyone from the amazing caregivers, the custodial and maintenance staff, chefs-kitchen staff, and nursing staff. This attitude is carried through in the loving and thoughtful care for our loved ones. There is a high level of respect, consideration, and attention provided here. The caregivers are able to focus on caregiving and are not multitasking in other areas like housekeeping. They focus on individual personalities, and the things that are comforting to them. Another quality of Silverado is the philosophy of not just sedating difficult behavior but redirecting that resident. My parent can be very difficult, and is highly ambulatory. Her meds have been adjusted to keep her more alert, versus keeping her zoned out, The nursing staff is responsive, and I always hear when there has been an incident, or there has been a change in behavior, or an accident. I also like Dr. Gonzales who is the doctor affiliated with this location. Silverado also "normalizes" the environment.(As normal as it can be ...) There are dogs, cats, birds, fish, and caregivers' children interacting with residents, (a playground for them too!) This I feel, makes Silverado a more interactive and happy place. The activities and outings are excellent, and the caregivers work very hard at getting residents engaged. The music and various musicians that visit are excellent and this has been another high point for my parent. You actually see the caregivers dancing with residents, even if wheel chair bound, there is the experience of moving arms and getting the residents engaged. This year there are some furnishing improvements going on. Mom's room as been repainted, and also the improvement of a nicer closet. Let's face it, in ANY residential environment for the aging or memory impaired, the furniture is going to be sullied, spilled on and even worse with occasional toileting incidents. The custodial staff is ever present with cleaning the carpet, and the soft chairs etc. I would much rather have excellent caregivers than a place that focuses on new furniture. I have had excellent responses to my questions, and how things are changing for my parent. This is a tough, tough journey for us all. With time, and experience, I find that I am much more compassionate and understanding of how darn difficult it is to do all the things we want to see done to and with our loved ones, and then understanding that the caregivers, and the staff are what you should really be so thankful for. As I have said, no place is perfect, even our own homes. Silverado Escondido has been a blessing, a place for emotional support, and the home where visiting Mom is a happy place despite the unhappy reality of dementia/Alzheimer's. read more

Once you get past the superficial - but important - things such as location, views, appearance you get to the outstanding attention and care that every resident receives. There is always something going on. I spend about five hours a day in this facility where my wife resides and I would have spotted anything that does not meet Silverado's high corporate standards and creed. From highest to lowest on the staff totem pole everyone appears to act from the heart, and are "with" the outstanding Silverado program. Last Thanksgiving we moved to Escondido from a Silverado facilty in Texas and expected this facility to meet that place's high standards. It did, but the food is better here, the view is better here, and we have the world's best caregiver here. I'm writing on YELP and feel a duty to complain, but - Sorry Yelp - I love this place. Silverado Escondido is an amazing community for those suffering from a memory impairment. My husband has resided at this community for the past 2 years. He suffers from dementia and homelife had become unmanagable for both of us. He was wandering at night, not sleeping much and our neighboors were complaining. The police department and I were on a first name basis - they had been to the house so much. This program has provided both of us with a qualtiy of life that I didn't imagine that I would experience ever again. Tom enjoys all of fun programs and believes he is at work there everyday dirrecting everything. He once again has a sense of purpose. I know he is well cared for and have learned that it is okay for me to have a life beyond caring for him. I'm just back from a trip to NC to see my grandchildren and had a wonderful guilt free time. My brother, who was a Silverado Escondido resident for almost the last two years, recently peacefully died due to a debilitating illness. When Don became a widower after 52 years of marriage, my husband and I thought we could take care of him in his own home which would make him happy. It didn't. As his dementia quickly progressed, he became more agitated - more confused - more angry - and to our great distress, terribly frightened. We began researching memory care facilities, but none seemed to come close to meeting his needs until the director of another facility strongly suggested we tour Silverado Escondido. At first glance the facility inside felt very comfortable to us with a bonus of a large beautifully landscaped fully surrounded yard area with a very serene view. There was a feeling of natural calmness among the management, the staff and the residents that seemed like the feeling you would have inside a family home. There were delicious smells coming from the dining room; there were dogs, birds and a fluffy cute rabbit. There was a posted list of interactive, inclusive daily activities. There was an overall clear sense that management and staff were all on the same page. Don entered Day One smiling - as though he intuitively knew that this was going to be a safe move for him - and he continued smiling till just days before he died. No one really knows what goes on when you're not there - and we live out of state, but anyone who knows their loved ones know when they feel secure and happy. We know that Don surely created difficult moments and was not always as cooperative and as pleasant as he could've been, but staff professionally dealt with it and it was handled. We were able to have frequent Face Time and frequent staff updates with his regular caretakers. And Don was the picture of contentment. He expressed to us that he had friends who he cared about and who cared about him as well. He was thriving even in the midst of all his medical issues - which staff also always promptly addressed. He felt safe and valued and happy; he had been given a life of purpose. My husband and I believe 100% that placing him in the care of this remarkable facility was without a doubt the best team decision we ever made. It's a pretty terrific thing to be able to know that you will feel no guilt taking such wonderful care of someone you love when they're no longer able to do it for themselves. Don only had two visitors during his stay (with COVID and all), but we love what he told them when they came for lunch. "Look at where I get to live and look at all this great food!" He had always been a very hard worker who was lucky enough in life for things to have gone well for him, and it was a real comfort to us to know that he clearly felt his life was still charmed. And when it came time within the facility for Hospice care, Don came under the additional care of three of the kindest, loveliest and most skilled people you could EVER hope to find - Jessica, Chaplin Frank and Ashley. My husband Carlos has been at Silverado Escondido Memory Care now beginning his 5th year and beginning his third year on their in house Hospice. I have always been awed by the quality of his care, the flexibility of staff to find ways to keep him content, to administer meds to a man who would refuse them. They were able to bathe him and get his clothes changed when I could not do that at home. Dementia made a difficult man even more challenging and Silverado Escondido was just superb at caring for him. My three girls and I have never had the slightest doubt that he was receiving loving and appropriate treatment. The beginning of 2020 COVID struck and the place shut down to all but caregivers. The residence developed a model of how to compartmentalize patients and provide care to those with COVID, keeping it from spreading to others. They have a regular testing schedule, offer more sick leave to staff than before and generally have served as an example to other nursing homes. I have always been very satisfied with the stellar quality of Carlos's treatment. Even when we could not visit, staff found ways to engage us with our relatives. In the beginning it was a drive by parade, very festive, where we could see our loved one and honor the caregivers as well. Later, it was window visits, FaceTime visits and finally they were able to offer patio visits when they vanquished the virus the first time. In this scary COVID environment I am very grateful for the many people involved in Carlos's care, care I could not replicate at home. I thank everyone there from Kellie Smith, administrator, and her office staff, to nurses, to groundskeepers, to CNAs who work with humor and affection, to Pat and the kitchen staff, who do so well planning and executing meals, to the housekeepers, to the mechanical geniuses who keep things working, to the Hospice of Silverado personnel, all are uniquely caring individuals, highly skilled at what they do. I would like to add a personal thank you to Lucía on day shift , the p.m. caregiver as well as the night shift ones who keep Carlos tended and content, make him say, as he did once, "They all LOVE me here." Silverado is the gold standard for Memory Care in San Diego. This is not just my opinion but what was relayed to me by three independent experts in the field. My father passed away recently and it was only because of Silverado's exceptionally high level of care, compassion, professionalism and expertise that we were able to not only stabilize my father's terminal agitation but provide my father a dignified and loving environment for my father's final days during a very steep decline. There would never be enough words to describe the amazing care my dad received at Silverado. Our family had such a peace about having him there. The staff goes above and beyond for the residents and the families- and not just some of the time- literally ALL of the time! We were so blessed by our experience. The staff is wonderful- from the paperwork beginning the process, to the nurses, caregivers, maintenance and kitchen staff. We were truly amazed by the consistent thoughtfulness and kindness. They first seem a bit welcoming at first. But they give you a run around of what exactly they need in order for you to stay. First it was an advance directive then they change it to power of attorney. Regardless if I had both they completely used it as an excuse to not except us. I dealt with a few very inconsiderate, and unsympathetic individuals their social worker jazmin and their administrator lattiza. Very unprofessional of them to offer help by giving you stress instead. They hang up on you, avoid your phone calls and even give you attitude. This is completely inappropriate for a healthcare type facility. five thumbs down! read more

My mother and father were both admitted to Silverado Escondido today after a gut wrenching search for placement for them both since their recent diagnosis of Alzheimers dementia and my father's recent head trauma from a fall. Today I have been a basket case since my mom was gently lead away from me for a "tour" which was her admission as I left the building. She has spent the past 9 days sitting staring at my father in the hospital and asking what happened to him. My father arrived an hour later from a rehab facility where he has been curled up in the fetal position for days. I just received an email with a photo and update on my parents activities since arriving. In the photo they are playing ping-pong! They have met the other residents, gone to an ice cream social, played with the resident pets, are currently dining together! I cannot believe the change in them. With their disease they had become so socially withdrawn and isolated. It's only the first afternoon, but a miracle has occurred, and I am hopeful that under the loving care of the remarkable people I have met at Silverado in the past few days, they will continue to finally have direction and purpose in their lives again. read more

I can't think of a better place where my mom with Lewy Body Dementia could have spent her final years. After a month of being there, my sister took her to the doctor. On the way back, my mom said "I hope you are taking me back to the new place. It's my home. Don't take me back to [insert name of Assisted Living where she lived before]." ALL of the staff go above and beyond in assisting residents, no matter what. They will drop what they are doing so they can be of assistance. They make everything feel like home and even have community pets. My sister's granddaughters loved visiting their Great Granny at Silverado because they could play with the animals while being with GG. Being welcome to eat meals with our mom prompted us to visit her much more often and we were able to create more memories with her. As a professional I have been in and out of the community several times and work with many clients who have loved ones who have either had respite or have placed their loved ones in the community. I am always touched by how warm the staff is to family members. They really open up and welcome family members and the community is so supportive of the family. (written by Dan's wife) I read that 1 in 4 of us will at some time need care for dementia or alzheimers type symptoms. My father, following the death of my mother (after a two year bout with leukemia), and after 56 years of marriage, had been on a slow downhill slide for several years. But like many seniors, his pride and paranoia about giving up control of his life made it impossible for us to convince him to allow in home care or assisted living, or even help of any kind. Unless you have experienced it, it's hard to express the pain of having to deal with someone who would not do anything to assist with his care or finances, all the while dealing with the abuse that dementia patients can inflict on the only ones in their lives who can help them. We never felt he should be driving, but just a month before he was picked up by the police, DMV issued him a 4 year renewal (at age 92!) Things finally came to a crisis point when he was stopped by police in the early morning hours, on his way to our home, and because of his extremely confused state, taken to a local hospital for what is known as a 5150 hold (danger to self, others, or gravely disabled). If you have a family member who is placed in such a hold, suffice it to say that your options to help them are extremely limited. Nevertheless, we took action, and contacted Silverado Senior Living in Escondido, California, so that he could have somewhere to go when he ultimately got released. Our first contact person was Rick, their family ambassador. And I can't say how comforting it was to have his advice, support and understanding. He helped explain how things would probably go, called us on his own to see how things were progressing (it took 5 days to get him released from the psychiatric hold), and introduced us to Jean the administrator and Sharon, another ambassador. They invited us to visit the facility for a tour. Upon arrival, we saw what can only be described as the "BMW" of dementia care facilities. My husband was an estate planning attorney specializing in elder law, and as such, he had been involved with many health care facilities and "nursing homes" over the years. Many are so depressing it was painful to even visit his clients. He said this was hands down the best facility he had ever seen. The facility is on a hill top over-looking the Escondido valley, with grass out front, trees, and beautiful landscaping. The entrance is friendly and welcoming. When you first enter, you are greeted by the soothing sound of harp music, and after days of running around dealing with all the problems my father left us with, it was such a nice change. This facility is arranged in an open configuration, with wide carpeted hallways, and the patients are allowed to walk wherever they want. There are large windows everywhere, giving the appearance of a home rather than a care facility. When we arrived, they were serving dinner, and it smelled pretty good. The air inside is filtered or cleaned in some manner that is better than the air in most hospitals. Patients are treated with compassion and respect, and you can feel that even though they may not know what is going on in their lives, they are content and comfortable here. There are animals too. Patients can bring their dogs, for example, if the dog gets along with others. Animal therapy is a very effective treatment for children and the elderly demented, two groups that are very similar. When we were filling out the paperwork, one of the older dogs came up to my husband and was rewarded with about 15 minutes of petting. When we came up to fill out the paperwork, the day before his release from the hospital, Jean, the administrator and Monica, the director of resident services, spent over an hour helping us complete forms, explaining the program, and making us feel totally at ease with the process. The facility offers an unbelievable 60 day full refund if for any reason the patient cannot remain or placement does not work out. In short, you can try them for 60 days risk free. They also gave us referrals for a local attorney who was needed to get certain legal papers prepared as my father had not done much to provide for how to take care of him in the event of such a crisis. On the day of my father's release, the hospital was sort of dragging their feet, with some confusion about timing. Rick got on the phone to the social worker, and voila, suddenly a definite time was arranged. It has been such a relief to me to know that my father is now in a great place, where he can be cared for and be safe. It's a hard thing to know he can no longer go home or drive a car, but sooner or later, without this intervention, it might have ended tragically. If you have a loved one in this situation, do not be afraid to take action. You are doing what's best for them, whether they appreciate it or not. I cannot say enough how grateful we are that Silverado was there for us. read more
