We have a good Vietnamese restaurant much closer to our home, along with a lot of other great restaurants (Petaluma is known for being an excellent restaurant town), so we hadn't been to Simmer in a long time, But we happened to be in that area when hunger struck, and my wife and I opted for dinner there. First, let me say, the whole place was immaculate--tables, floors, display areas, everything was spotless. Second, on a weeknight, the place was nearly full, another indication they're doing something right. Third, we were waited on almost immediately by a nice young guy who seemed happy to be helping us and very knowledgeable about the food. And finally, there was the food itself. We started with some fairly good Spring Rolls & Pot Stickers, but then it really got good. I had the House Special Vermicelli Bowl, loaded with several kinds of pork, lemongrass chicken, beef, prawns and so much more. It was so good I ate way past being hungry, and still had more than enough to take home for another day. And my wife had the same experience with her equally good Lemongrass Chicken Vermicelli Bowl. I was even able to pair my meal with a very good raspberry wheat beer. Bottom line? If you're in the mood for an excellent Vietnamese dinner, at a very fair price, give Simmer a try. My husband is from Vietnam and unfortunately this area is very lacking when it comes to Vietnamese restaurants and businesses compared to other parts of California. We had never been here before, but live down the street and wanted to try it! The restaurant was beautiful inside and the atmosphere was very relaxing. Also very clean. We got the potstickers as an appetizer and they were yummy! For main course, my husband got the beef brisket and meatball combo pho and I got the lemongrass chili chicken. We both really enjoyed our dishes. I'm a spicy food lover and have a high tolerance for heat. The spice in this dish was perfect as it had a kick in each bite, but wasn't so spicy that you had to stop eating after a few bites. I ate about half and took the rest home because I have a small appetite. Our waiter was a tall and young gentleman who was very polite and gave us attentive and great service!! He made us feel very comfortable and valued. I enjoyed my leftovers at home and my cat must've thought it was smelled good because he wouldn't leave the box alone lol. I have been coming to simmer for several years. My husband loves their calamari, fried, and fresh rolls. We have had them many times. I don't know what happened, if the supplier or the chef, but this time it was inedible. I asked the waitress that knows us if they switched suppliers, she said no. I had the Lemmongrass Chicken with noodles which seemed liked it needed something... turns out, after eating half my meal, I should have been given the sauce and oils with my food. After adding in some of the sauces I was very satisfied with my dish. I would normally write it off as a simple mistake however our server forgot to bring out the drinks, didn't offer a refill, and never apologized for bringing out our sauces late when it was obvious we had eaten about half of our dinner. Too bad we were in a hurry I would've loved to try more dishes but the tofu spring roll with avocado was delicious and the peanut sauce was too- it tasted similar to how I make mine, with all natural ingredients. I have had better, but the better would be a 6 or 7 star type of place. It would not be fair to use those places as the standard against which I compare all others. I have been living in New Jersey for about 1.5 years. There are a few Vietnamese restaurants. They make a good effort, but the outcomes were mediocre. The places I have tried can hold intense cravings at bay. I lived in Sacramento for 2 years prior to moving to New Jersey. For anybody who does not know, Sacramento has pretty great Vietnamese food. So, I've been dying for some good Vietnamese food. I wasn't trying to find something as good or better than what was readily available in Sacramento. I was just looking for good effort and good outcome. I was in Petaluma for work, and found this place. Of course I ordered pho, and spring rolls. The spring rolls were decent. There was nothing to complain about. I would eat them again. You choose what type of protein/protein substitute goes in them. The star of the show was the soup broth. The flavor was great. It is very possible that my taste buds have just been so deprived of good pho broth that anything will impress me, but I really don't think that is the case. I ordered a side of egg noodles. There is an option to substitute the egg noodles for the rice noodles, but I wanted both. I have found very few restaurants that offer the triple threat: pho with egg noodles, rice noodles, AND wontons. So, I usually attempt to recreate a bowl of over-indulgence by ordering/adding extras. read more

Filet mignon pho was phenomenal. The meat was tender, noodles were solid, and broth was amazing! Would definitely come back if were in the area. It is a little on the pricey side for $16/large bowl. I was very please with the food here. Fantastic bowl of Pho with fresh noodles. Their fried rolls are great as well. I had the steak pho and really enjoyed it. The broth had great flavor and was very filling. I would have given this Restraunt five stars, however the service was lacking. I have been to this restaurant many times for lunch during the work week. I REALLY like their pho. It is all about the broth, and theirs is one of the best that I have had. I have also enjoyed their spring rolls, clay pot chicken, crispy egg rolls, pork belly skewers, onion wrapped beef, mango salad, and shaken beef. All we're executed very well and tasty. The decor is nice and muted, very welcoming. Parking is adequate but the spaces are a bit small. The staff is attentive, courteous and helpful. The place was packed with a good atmosphere, but we still got a table quickly & in no rush. The service of the staff was on point, polite and conscientious. I like spicy, so I went for the Lemongrass Chili chicken with vermicelli [spicy] it came with lettuce for diffuse. Probably too spicy for me so I would just request milder next time, but it was very good & flavorful. I'm eating the leftovers now. So recommended to us spice fans, and this is healthy food too, no greasy stuff. My mother had the Ginger Chicken with rice and liked it very much. The presentation of each plate was also pleasant. This place is so delicious! They have amazing pho and chicken vermicelli. My favorite is the seafood pho with the clear glass noodles. They have large portion sizes and the staff are all very friendly. Be aware they they close at 3:00PM and reopen at 4:30 PM for dinner. They are also closed on Tuesdays. Overall, I really enjoy coming here to eat with my family their food is delicious I highly recommend trying out this place if you love Vietnamese food. read more

Super bummed that the front of house staff was not properly wearing masks when we picked up dinner last night. The only young man out front was properly masked. A young woman with tattooed arms and servicing tables was properly masked. 4 other young women at the register, accepting take out payment and phone calls all wore masks under their nose or chins. We enjoyed such a wonderful birthday lunch for my sister at Simmer. I love the comfortable, light, airy dining room. Both the food and service were excellent. Jorge B was friendly, warm, and just-right attentive. My sister meant to order the J1 Ginger Chicken instead of the R3 Lemongrass Chicken bowl. Both are great but she really likes the chicken sauteed in ginger sauce. My question is how is it possible to layer so many flavors in the Pho broth? Delicious! Can't wait to return! read more

Food: Simmer was much needed in Petaluma. The food is delicious and very fresh. I am addicted to their spring rolls (shrimp or pork) and the delicious peanut sauce they are served with , their Vietnamese salad, and their pork chop rice plate. It's all sooo good and you don't feel guilty eating it because it's balanced, crisp, fresh food. Ambiance: It's a tranquil and very clean place, but could use a bit more decor elements to make it more date worthy or business lunch appropriate...The fish tank is quite beautiful (and no, the place doesn't smell like fish tank). Service: The servers all act like they own the place in the sense that they're super-friendly and attentive. Pricing: Their prices are quite good. When my mouth starts watering for a particular type of food.I generally go on the hunt for the Best i Can find. Well here recently i have been having my Asian side of me wanting Vietnamese. SO i had it a few days ago in Cotati (see review) and its Damn Good. But this busy corner of the Mall in Petaluma brings a bit of a California flair to it. Now its not like this bridge dweller hands out five stars very often.So its gotta really Knock my pants off to hit the Five Star.. Place was crowded at lunch as it should be. We got seated right away and service was very attentive. I started w/ the shrimp spring rolls (4) very fresh and killer peanut sauce. Secondly was the Salt/Pepper Calamari... let me stop the little bus right here my gnome friends. I am giving them one star, because they lack in overall service and execution. I'm OK with the Americanized Vietnamese food, as it is what I would expect in a suburb like Petaluma. The problem lies in the fact that they routinely screw up orders and I wind up having to go back-and-forth when I'm ordering takeout. This has now happened twice, and it makes the overall experience underwhelming at best. Ultimately, there doesn't seem to be a manager who takes accountability and ownership of the operation. My wife and step daughter love Simmer, their Pha is very good, I have had some of their food but I do not think the Potstickers are not fresh made in house and that takes it down a star for me, The restaurant is always clean and seems busy which is good because the young owners do a great job with the cuisine, and the service is very good. The owners are supposedly Vietnamese, but the decor and lack of Vietnamese speaking staff will throw you off a bit. Nonetheless, the guys were very friendly and courteous, checking up on our party even when they weren't our server. Looking through the menu, the prices are a lot steeper than traditional Vietnamese restaurants. The quantity that they serve aren't that much more than other Vietnamese restaurants I've frequented either, they may look deceiving due to the shape of the bowls. But as far as quality goes, this has got to be one of the best pho restaurant we've been to. My friend could not believe how delicious the pho dat biet, and I couldn't fathom how they made the com thit nuong so amazing. This is the only time I've had com thit nuong without the edges being burnt. The vegetables were also really fresh compared to the ones I'm accustomed to. I think my only complaint was that they served the dish without the broth soup that usually comes with it. read more

Just moved to Petaluma recently and had to get my Pho fill. This is the place! Such NICE people, too. I have only been here a couple of times - for dinner and for lunch - and it is always very busy. A good sign. I really love the quality and flavor of the food -this is now my Vietnamese go-to without a doubt! Update: May 2018: I was blissfully enjoying my weekly Pho alone the other night when I overheard a guy a couple tables down telling the server: 'I'm Vietnamese and this food is so amazing. I visited Simmer for the first time the other night. It was delicious! We enjoyed the egg rolls and two rice plates, one with beef short ribs and the other combo plate including, BBQ meatballs, pork, chicken, onion wrap and the bbq prawns. All of it was delicious, but I especially enjoyed the meatballs and onion wrap! We ordered calamari which mistakenly came after our meals.. but no complaints because it was some of the best calamari I have had. I was hesitant because it looks like childrens fish sticks, but no.. it was so good and even better with the spicy mayo. I actually got lucky this came after the meal because my boyfriend was getting full, we took the rest home and it was a delicious snack later in the evening! Monica was our waitress, she was very polite and attentive. The inside of the restaurant is well decorated and I love the fish tank. We will definitely be back! read more

This is our go-to place for Pho and Vietnamese. Fresh, delicious and reasonably priced with great service, you can almost always find this place packed on any given night. We often order take out and its just as good as eating in the restaurant. I consistently order the steak pho, its perfect for a cold night. The steak is thinly sliced, the noodles cooked just right, the broth perfectly seasoned and the regular size is just right for a filling meal. The crispy rolls, and spring rolls are our go-to for appetizers. The yellow curry is another one of my go to dishes. It has a good amount of kick to it and not at all bland like some other curries I've tried. My fiancé likes to order the spicy lemongrass chicken with noodles, it'll make you sweat! All the other dishes we've tried are just as great, but we're creatures of habit and have our favorites. read more

Been coming here for three years now. Never had a single menu item that wasn't deliciously pleasant. The pho soups are amazing and reasonably priced. When I'm sick I have my man bring me home a cup of their broth. My only constructive criticism is that I don't think they have a veggie broth option. I'm not a vegan or anything. The food here is pretty good. However, when I picked up food recently inside the restaurant, 2 workers, 1 male and 1 female, had their masks below their noses. There were 2 other workers there with masks on correctly, but did not say anything. All 4 were talking to each other by the register, within 6 feet of each other. For starters I ordered potstickers; they were ok nothing special. Service was good; waiter was friendly and attentive even if was a busy afternoon. Excellent food, excellent service! We had a date night and chose to go somewhere new! :) we love Pho! So this seemed like a great choice. He got the p7 and I got the p1 on the menu! The meat was cooked perfectly and was tender and flavorful, the rice noodles were perfect and the broth was to die for! We also got two appetizers, the shrimp spring rolls and the pot stickers! The pot stickers were amazing and the sauce they give you with them was a sweet and savory soy based sauce. I was at Simmer this evening and I have to say that it was awesome. I had the Spring rolls with BBQ pork and the Filet Mignon and Meatballs Pho with added steamed veggies. Both were exceptional and what really stood out is the service is really good for a Pho restaurant and the staff are polite and attentive. I would like to see a bit more BBQ in my spring rolls, but that was about the only issue as I will definitely be coming back. read more

What a place to find, so on our 5.5 hour drive home from Humboldt, we were starving and wanted pho. Found Simmer from the moment we walked in greeted super sweetly. I've ordered here a bunch of times and I've always had a good experience. Their pho is delicious! But today, I ordered a steak pho, and when I opened it (I ordered it to go with my coworkers, so we had a big order) I noticed that there was no steak! I just ate the soup with noodles and veggies because it still tastes good, and I didn't want to call or drive anywhere, but it's still a little disappointing. No matter what, I'll still eat here, as long as the food continues to taste this good! read more
