Excellent food and service! We had the thatte idli mix, and the mixed wada plate. The idlis were fluffy and the (six) sauces that came with it were also very good. The sambar hit all the right notes. I followed with the ghee kara masala dibbarotte, my first time. Be aware that this prep takes time, so nurse your wada sambar while you wait! It was a sight to behold! Finished with a gongura mudhapappu pulihora (reminiscent of a bisi bele huli anna). Washed everything down with filter coffees. Don't plan on operating any heavy machinery after this meal! Worth the drive! The reservation system with the QR code worked efficiently and we were seated in 20 minutes. We went with great expectations. The ratings were high. The NY Times listing was an added plus. Reservations were made ahead of time and our table was prepared for our party of 10 for 7 pm on a Sunday. Many people were waiting outside to get in. The ambience is probably the best I've seen for an Indian restaurant. The menu had great offerings and we made our choices. However here's what happened. 1) Appetizers were ordered (gobi Manchurian) but the first item that showed up on the table was a MALABAR POROTTA! 2) Items came in bits and pieces with no rhyme or reason and the servers had no clue as to 'what' we ordered. 3) One bottle of water was placed for the entire table and not a single time was the water re-filled! 4) We ordered two more porottas and the first one came in about 20 minutes but the second one (why would two of one would delay that much time?) came about 10-15 minutes after the first one came. By this time, my son's appetite was gone and he was disgusted. So, politely my son told the server that he didn't want the porotta any more. The server called the manager and he outrightly started 'arguing' with my son. He said, 'every order takes about 20 minutes'. However, when my son asked for the order timing to be checked, they quickly recanted the argument because it was over 35 minutes! The saddest part was that instead of turning to the 'customer' the manager turned to the 'server' but he never bothered to come back to us and even say a 'sorry'! Never did he look back at our table again. 5) Also, the Manager and the server were wearing long sleeved hoodies which is not a professional attire especially in handling food.. 6) I saw a 70mm dosa while being brought in touched the edges of the walls but the server brought it to the customer nevertheless. The servers appear to be very stressed in this place. Either they are untrained or they have too much on their 'plate'. Let me compare this restaurant to 'agas' in Houston which serves almost 5 times the number of customers there. I've been there almost 10 plus times but I've never had a similar experience. The servers efficiently serve at all times. Why wouldn't Indian restaurants learn how to serve? The order of serving food? When a family orders food, bring appetizers first, and bring the food items ordered together. We had no clue as to what was going to be served when! We had a reservation and dined in at Simply South. The restaurant was extremely crowded, which led to slow service--a common issue on weekends. After finishing our meal, we were waiting for our filter coffee when the owner himself asked us to leave. Despite having spent a reasonable amount, the management approached us, insisting that we vacate our table, even though we were simply waiting for our coffee at the end of the meal. Our total time there was no more than 30-40 minutes, which is a reasonable expectation for a weekend dining experience. Never going back there Food was ok though read more

I asked several of my Dallas native friends where they would recommend going for South Indian food in Dallas and every single person recommended I check this place out. We arrived 5 minutes after the doors opened and even by then the place was already packed with people. We were luckily able to get a table without a reservation. The whole menu is vegetarian and everything we got was incredible but I highly recommend the 3 in 1 thatte idly. Our waitress was also very helpful in guiding us through the numerous delicious options on the menu. This may very well be the best South Asian restaurant I've ever been to and I will be back often. read more

A delightful blend of soulful flavors & awe-inspiring hospitality. The decor & the music add to the authentic experience as well. The trick is to get there early if you aren't a fan of waiting as this place is pretty popular & rightly so. We tried a couple of things & 1 topped the other, such true flavors. The thatte idli is a must try & definitely one of my favorites. The feather in the cap was the experience provided by our hostess Harshini, being busy didn't mean there would be a compromise on the service. She took time to patiently explain us the menu & assisted with trying few new flavors. Loved it. 5/5 stars. Quite busy on a Saturday evening but they were able to seat us outside after about a 15 minute wait. Could only sit outside as well due to having a dog. Dogs are allowed on the patio only. Seemed on the inside it was packed plus waitlist only from 6 PM - 9 PM. Extremely busy. Got a masala dosa, thali, and banana leaf briyani. All the dishes were excellent and the sambar was delicious. The desserts in the thali were a bit lackluster to be honest with Kheer and Pongal. Literally 2 lamest desserts in all of South Indian cooking. Boo. They could have done gulab jamun, halva, or burfi. The folks who got the briyani and dosa fi wished their plates. I destroyed my thali as well. It was a lot of food but enough for one grown man. Didn't leave feeling bloated or anything. Would give 5 stars but service was mediocre and we had to flag the server quite a few times for water, food, and bill. I have been here several times, and hands down, this is the best South Indian restaurant in the DFW area. I strongly recommend a reservation if you have a large group or want to do something other than wait. The service is excellent. And the ambiance is nice too. I had too many things to eat here, and all of them were excellent, so I will call out a few. The thatte idly is excellent. Have the 3-in-1 to get three flavors. One of them (the Guntur) is spicy. The Bisebelle bath was great (though I still line A2B) All the dosas are good and their chutneys are outstanding. I can write more, but you get the drift. Starting with the ambience, felt exactly as it would if we were at a traditional restaurant back home. From the decor, seating and to cutlery it was perfect. Next, the food was delicious! Service was fast given it was packed, we didn't wait past 10 minutes and we ordered quite a few. Since the kitchen was closing soon we wanted to order a dessert. Mr. Sesha Reddy promised he will bring it in the end and unfortunately when we brought it up with our waiter she mentioned the kitchen was closed lights off. Our server was able to point out some good recomendacións for us. . We ordered the Paleek Paneer, noodles and paneer Marsala. They tasted delicious The second time we went we ordered same exact dishes but I felt the quality of the food was not as good. A bit salty for my taste but good not great. We visited this restaurant three times, and each time was a disappointment. Getting a table was nearly impossible, and when we finally did, it was shoved into a dreadful corner. The service was abysmal, rude, inattentive, and completely dismissive. The food itself? Mediocre at best. Couples should not bother; the only attention seems to go to large groups. The reception was the worst part: two young women at the front desk who were shockingly rude. On one visit we arrived five minutes past closing after a 50-minute drive, only to be flatly refused even something as simple as idly and tea. No attempt to listen, no courtesy, no care. Furthermore, the Mudapappu with avakayi was unfortunately overly salty due to an excess of avakayi, suggesting a need for better balance in the dish. Silverware was disgustingly dirty. Bathroom reminded me of a Bombay train station. DISGUSTING. Can't even wash hands properly. The dirty dish cart was being dragged and rolled around during dinner to collect dishes. This is trash and the genius who thought this was an efficient move is an absolute PENCHOD. Go elsewhere nothing special here. Kids enjoyed their Nutella dosa. RAWA dosa was horrible, Pooris was ok. Simply south? Being a South Indian none of these flavors were southern . Simply South is a restaurant with nice ambiance where you can take both families and co-workers. Do keep in mind that it is reservation-based only and really busy on weekends. We ordered the onion chili uttapam, thatte idly, Davangere masala dosa, and the South Indian weekend dinner thaali. The onion chili uttapam was fluffy and prepared well. It well with the sambar. Thatte Idly was also delicious! The idlis are fluffy and pretty big. They have a type of spicy powder on top of two of them, but there's also ghee added, so it's not that spicy. The dosa was on the softer side instead of crispy, which I actually liked! The chutneys were also delicious!! I loved the presentation of them. Falooda was also pretty good. It's filling and a nice touch after the spicy food. One thing I wish that was different was that I wish they wrote on the posters that the thaali on the leaf is only offered for lunch. They advertise aritaku bhojanam, and it doesn't say that it's only for lunch, so I thought it was for dinner too. I was a little bummed about that. Poor management. Disorganized seating system- they told 20 groups that their table was ready and none of the tables were ready. Place is understaffed and workers are overworked and mistreated. They ran out of a flavor of a menu item and told us they can't cancel the item off our order and that we must choose one of the other flavors. If you run out of an item, you shouldn't force someone to buy something that they didn't want. I do not recommend this place. read more
