Sizzle & Crunch, you are the banh for mi! I've been meaning to check this restaurant out for awhile and got the chance to finally visit with a friend. Right off of 42nd, Sizzle & Crunch is in the heart of the University District community. This is definitely more of a take-out versus dine-in sort of restaurant with its minimal seating and tables. We managed to snag a "seat" by the window, which was really a table placed right by the window sill. It was clear that Sizzle & Crunch was a popular choice for the area as the line wrapped it's way through the restaurant and out the door. But don't worry, the line moves fairly quickly. :) As others have mentioned, Sizzle & Crunch specializes in made-to-order banh mi and rice bowls. I went for the Grilled Pork Rice Bowl and got to add various toppings like lettuce, cucumber, carrots, fish sauce & an egg for extra. Definitely catered towards hungry college students, the price is great for the quantity that you get. For around $10, you get a generous serving of rice, whatever protein you chose and the additional toppings. Only downside was how hectic it got inside the restaurant - it seemed like there was almost too much activity for the staff to keep up. We were seated right by the trash, which was overflowing at certain times as staff members struggled to change it out. I think I also saw someone wiping down the windows at the same time? Imagine making your own custom Vietnamese vermicelli bowl, but with rice and a bunch of toppings at your liking. The portions are large and generous, while the taste is close enough to authentic Viet. The cilantro aioli green sauce is BOMB...add a sunny egg for a small extra charge...don't skip these options. I enjoy how they offer fish (or soy) sauce to down your bowl in the end. Some downsides, it's a smaller space and there are not enough tables inside. Not all the side toppings were available when we stopped in for a Saturday lunch; didn't see any peanuts or daikon. Did they take fries off the menu or just run out at my visit?? I walked in asking if any of the sandwiches had Pate and the owner who worked there seemingly didn't even know what Pate was. I was a bit surprised since it was a banh mi place. It's really a crowded ass assembly line, almost like a chipotle style restaurant, so your quality of sandwich assembly will vary depending on who you get. The BB special is delicious, as is the beef. Be sure to get the jalapeño-cilantro aioli (green sauce). The banh mi itself is extremely flavorful and delicious.. One of my favorite non traditional banh mi places in the Seattle area. I would describe Sizzle & Crunch as a Chipotle, but a Vietnamese version if that makes sense. Vietnamese broken rice dish has been my favorite Vietnamese dish ever since I was young. I've only ever had this dish either in Orange County or homemade by my mother. Switching from an omnivore diet to a pescatarian diet, it was harder to find a place that served this dish to my liking besides my home. Needless to say, my expectations were high. I ordered the rice bowl with tofu, a fried egg, cilantro aioli, cilantro, tomatoes, romaine lettuce, carrots, cucumbers, and green onion oil. Despite not being quite a traditional Vietnamese broken rice dish with an egg meatloaf, shredded pork skin, and/or a shrimp cake, I really enjoyed the rice bowl. With tofu dishes, sometimes the tofu is too hard and dry, but their tofu was really soft and marinated well. I also really like both their soy sauce and fish sauce. The soy sauce is not overly salty. It has a sweetness to it. The same can be said about the fish sauce. I really like that their rice bowls balance carbs, protein, and vegetables. It makes me feel that I am eating a balanced meal. In my opinion, the portion size is pretty big so for $10, I am basically getting two meals. For the rice bowls, you choose your grain (white rice or brown rice), protein (pork, beef, chicken, tofu), and veggies (carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers, jalapenos, cilantro, cilantro aioli, and romaine lettuce). There is no limit for how much veggies you want. Then, you can choose either soy sauce or fish sauce. Regarding the atmosphere, this location is pretty small. It has a small seating area. Not a good place for large groups. However, all the times that I've been here, there aren't many people seating so if you did want to dine in, you definitely could. Yummy, quick and casual Vietnamese lunch near University of Washington. I had a meeting at UW, so ventured off to the Ave for my lunch sitch and found Sizzle & Crunch. Soon after I entered, I kid you not, the place became packed on a Tuesday. Get here early if you want a seat 'cause the place is small and limited on seating. But more importantly the food was awesome! I like the simple concept where you build your own entree, choosing a base, protein and toppings. You can choose from a banh mi, rice bowl or a salad bowl. I went with the House Pork Special, which came with lemongrass pork, pork belly and a fried egg over steamed rice and a side of salad. You can also choose whatever sauces and toppings you want to add. I basically chose everything, and it was a hefty amount - easily two meals in one. The lemongrass pork was by far, my favorite part of the dish. I love the tender, flavorful, well-seasoned pork with all the goodies. And the fried egg over rice is just true comfort food. For the sauces, I got fish sauce on the side, but the sauce you'll want to definitely try is the jalapeno cilantro aioli! Yummmmaaaayy! It was a nice, cool, creamy sauce with lots of fresh cilantro flavor to it. I added jalapenos to my meal, which had lots of seeds with, so had that extra kick and complemented the aioli. My House Pork Special certainly hit the spot and can't believe for all that I got it was less than 10 bucks! Deals for dayzzz! The sandwich was much better this time! The bread was a bit softer but not soggy. It was stuffed with meat, veggies and the egg of course. It was also just huge! I love this place! It is definitely in my top 5 places to go to on the Ave when I go out. It's like vietnamese chipotle where you can choose a bowl and whatever meat and add ons you want! I always order the pork belly bowl as its always flavored so good and taste great the rice. The green sauce is also a must try with the bowl and it just brings everything together nicely. They are also quick in making the food if you need to order and take it to go! There are a few tables to eat at but are full at times especially during lunch time. Troi oi, this is like the Vietnamese version of Chipotle, except probably healthier considering it's Asian cuisine. I'm Vietnamese and I can vouch for it having authentic flavors. Super duper easy concept, it's quick & easy with reasonable pricing. You order at the counter and it's pretty much self service. You pick your base; rice/noodle bowl, salad, or banh mi. I got the rice because it's kind of rare to find broken rice anywhere and when you find something rare, you don't let it go. Next is the selection of protein which you can also add an egg. You just go through the assemble line adding whatever toppings of fresh veggies that you want. At the end, they ask if you want fish sauce or soy sauce which if you want the full Vietnamese experience, get the fish sauce. Why can't you come to Bellevue?! I decided to get the "BB Special Banh Mi" because for some reason pate sounded good to me and glad I made a wise life decision. All the meats were pretty tasty, the carrot & daikon was good, some cilantro, fried egg on top made it that much better and the bread was nice and crusty, overall the whole sandwich was pretty darn good. They have other things if you don't want a bahn mi such as rice bowls and salad bowls. My coworker enjoyed her grilled chicken rice bowl and the portion was pretty huge. Prices are great! Super college student friendly, I think my bahn mi was under $7. Bowls are under $8 depending on which meat you choose. Staff was nice and pretty quick to fix up your order. I arrived there at about 2pm in the afternoon, but still a lot of guests waiting in the line! I had half chicken and half beef, but the price is counted whole beef brisket. However, I don't think their beef could called brisket, since brisket are supposed to be in chunk for most of time, they had it sliced. The flavor was kind of like teriyaki. The chicken is grilled with slightly smoked flavor. They provide more choices of topping, that's wonderful! Try their jalapeño, is fresh and spicy! And I love their green sauce and cilantro, really nice! They got better toppings than chipotle, but they only give you a small spoon for each topping you choose. And the proteins are way worse than chipotle( in my opinion) . Although they have wonderful topping, I would more likely to choose chipotle. The Chipotle/Subway style of dining is taking over and Vietnamese food just joined the party. As a student, I'm all for anything that's fast, cheap, and arguably healthy. Sizzle&Crunch sure knows their audience. For less than $8 each, we ordered the Grilled Pork Salad Bowl and the BB Special Banh Mi. I can't say much about the banh mi because my boyfriend gobbled it up before I got the chance to really try it out. It just seemed more bready than most banh mi's I've consumed. My salad bowl was pretty enjoyable. There was a good amount of different ingredients and the aioli (green onion and jalapeño, I think) was definitely a flavor highlight. I wish the meat wasn't as chopped up/greasy and that the egg for an extra $0.65 wasn't so sad/cold, but I still ate everything anyway. For two months into opening, I think S&C has made pretty good progress solidifying its signature flair on the Ave. That said, some of the infrastructure will need some TLC moving forward: The soda machine was broken, the utensils station was a dusty mess, the trash can was stuffed in a corner opposite the recycling bin and dining space, and there are fairly few seating options. I'm sure I'll be back again to order a sandwich for myself next time, really hoping to see some improvements by then. read more

TLDR: Vietnamese Chipotle. Egg is not that special. Small place with a few tables and standing tables. Walk in, look at the board and put together your meal like you would at chipotle. However, this place is definitely not as organized and efficient. Expect to wait for your order after the person behind you. Toasting the bread backs up the line. BB Special Banh Mi: tastes pretty good and has lots of flavor. I personally like the cold cuts. The bread is more "airy" than "bready". Pickled carrots and daikon radish are not as crunchy as I would expect and there is barely any radish--heavy in the carrots. The egg is meh--nothing special. If anything it's a hassle and messy to eat. If you don't want it I suggest you save $0.65 and get the the Classic Banh Mi. Lettuce was slightly tinged yellow from wilting. Banh Mi Fries: currently not available yet! It's on the menu board but there is no sign saying that it's not available--they haven't had their grand opening yet. read more

I've been here a few times now, and never been disappointed with the food! Spicy pork is to die for and the eggs are cooked really well! I don't know what it is about some of these rice bowl places, but they can never figure out how to cook an egg. Service was quick and friendly and the ambience was very nice with lots of great seating areas. Only thing I wish is that they had more drink options. I always get the chicken bowl with Eggs, greens and EVERYTHING!! if you're ever at the Ave and you just want something quick, spot-hitting and just delicious Sizzle&crunch is where its at!!
