Make sure you're fully committed and don't have life altering surgery come up that causes you to cancel your appointment because you will not get a refund. I'm from California and I booked with them back in December 2024 for may 1st 2025. I read over their policy and it only says you forfeit your deposit if you cancel 72 hours in advance. Well I'm canceling well over a month in advance and they still refuse to give me $800 back. Which is a lot for a deposit (it was half the price of the tattoo). I see it as unfair as I would totally get my artwork if I were able to travel there and have shamil do it. However they're forcing me to pick an artist I don't know and go with a style I don't like nor trust in a location in California (it's 4 hours away from me) and it's overall unfair, unprofessional and in my opinion just unaccommodating. So just be cautious when booking months in advance as they make Zero exceptions. read more

It has been about ten years since my last tattoo. I always went to NY Adorned. But I believe they are no more or at the very least no longer on Second Ave. So...I went over to Skin Design in Manhattan. The shop is very new and modern, and therefore very clean. The artists all seem to be young and excited about their work... and excited about working together. The tattoo artists are definitely a diverse and eclectic bunch of peeps. One artist from Hawaii had long black hair all the way down to her ankles. Yes ankles. Another artist was female..apparently nude from the waist up with tattoos covering her breasts. And so on and so forth. Lia was my tattoo artist. She was awesome. Beautiful girl with a very gentle touch. I could have taken a nap while she worked. She did the work - written word in standard ink - very quickly. The script was beautiful and the location was perfect. A Perfect experience! I highly recommend the shop and Lia. Everything about Skin Design Tattoo is top of the line. I have been to the location in Hawaii and the new location in Soho and come away more impressed each time. The new location is state of the art and a must see when you have free time to check it out. From the moment you walk in the door to the moment you leave, you feel more than welcome and as if you are family. Jesse initially greeted me and directed me to the front desk to virtually check in for my appointment. Throughout the whole process (two full-day sessions) he made the whole process a lot easier. He is normally based in Cali but hopefully if you visit the shop you get a chance to meet him. It is hard to find genuine people these days but not when you visit Skin Design! I happened to have my first appointment on my birthday and they made it feel more special than immediate family would. Not only did my tattoo artist, Lynn, get me a cake but the whole team came out and sang Happy Birthday. Each member came up to me and introduced themselves and they always act with the utmost respect and hospitality. Luckily while researching for a tattoo artist I came across Lynn and I couldn't be more thankful. I have known her for three years now and I am a firm believer that its not how long you have known somebody that is more important, it's how they show up for you and show you who they are throughout that time that matters the most. She is in an incredible artist and a incredible person. I now have 7+ days worth of art done by Lynn and I love all of it. The amount of compliments I get weekly are incredible. This review is for Luis Farrera. I had a really old tattoo that badly needed refreshing, with some show-throughs from a previous cover-up, places where the linework was sloppy, and overall fading. I also wanted to add watercolor roses to fill in the background and make it more cohesive. It took me a while not just to save up the money for an enhancement, but to find the right artist.   As much as I enjoy the culture of tattoos, the process of finding an artist can be like running through a forest of egomaniacs. I've had the distinct pleasures of opening my eyes and finding out they'd put on a color way outside the palette we discussed, that can't be changed - adding elements on a whim, without taking ten seconds to halt the needle and get my consent first - getting careless with black ink, that lasers don't dislodge - being told "just tell me what you want changed, tattoos are more flexible than people realize, we can do whatever you want" and then two sessions later, "I don't go back over my own work" - a * lot * of boundary-pushing behavior. And this came from artists with gorgeous portfolios, excellent ratings, long tenures in the industry, I did my vetting homework and wound up burned anyway. I wanted to find someone whose ink skills were matched by good energy.   Multiple artists at the Empire State Tattoo Expo backed away from this piece, as well as a couple more artists at another contemporary studio in the area, saying it was too difficult for them to fix. I got online, created a list of artists in the NYC area who had both watercolor and coverup work in their portfolios - a short list! I was terrified I was going to get trapped with bad ink forever. I texted the number on SkinDesign's website asking for a consult with Luis, whose work was stunning, and hoped for the best.   While I was greenlit for a session, they required a hefty deposit for a day reservation. By this point, I was very, VERY wary handing over that much to someone I'd never met - they understood this and set up an in-person consult, yay! Luis was friendly, interested in the references I'd brought in, fine with going with the art I'd selected, and looked at the piece like, "yeah? what's the difficulty? I got this." There was this quiet confidence about him, no aura of the diva at all, no antagonism, no arrogance. Just this calmness, that spoke volumes. The talent that doesn't need to announce itself - it will show you, gradually.   My first two sessions with him, I had panic attacks on the subway on the way over, just from all the past tattoo trauma. But his energy calmed me down. I felt like, this dude is not gonna let me walk out of here with bad ink. Being welcomed into the process, where before I'd been shut out. A very good listener, instead of bulldozing me. Extremely careful linework that not only cleaned up all the old ink into beautiful swirls, but a lavender that gives off a glowing effect. Lots of patience in making sure the placements were just right, a realistic assessment of how what looks good on paper might not work on the skin, a technique where I didn't really feel much pain (I sat for ten hours, a personal record). My aesthetic is more art nouveau/abstract floral watercolor, not what Luis typically does, but I'm so happy he said yes and took me on as a client. His wheelhouse is realism and he really rips it up in that aesthetic. So I really appreciate the time he took to put on my pretty little flowers, lol. He knocked a huge chunk of ugliness off my shoulder, he removed a huge psychic weight and I feel so much happier in tank tops and evening dresses.   My first session had been in the old Williamsburg location, which felt like a chic but comfy living room full of art - the new location in Soho, frankly, was a little gobsmacking to walk into. I'm getting inked HERE?? Tattoo parlor glamour!! Ray and Star were both delightful presences managing the shops and making sure everything ran smoothly. Anthony is another artist at the Soho location who I ended up chatting with, super-friendly and very knowledgable. The place looks high-end but the vibes are warm. You are dealing with professionals here.   SkinDesign HQ were extremely friendly to deal with, texting me for references, check-in photographs of the healing, watching over me through the process. I was truly nervous about the experience seeing as how I already had a piece I wasn't happy with, now to get it covered up.......lets just say I was on edge...
