We made a decision to try this restaurant again after our last experince. It was not great last time but this time they redeemed themselves. The service was great and the food was prepared well. I had a bowl of venison chile and a sald. (see pics) We like this place because you can get "odd" cuts of meat at times. (venison, antelope, etc.) It is located on the north side of Newark so you also do not have to deal with University students. Happy hour prices are great and the atmosphere is good too. read more

My wife and I went to Skipjack restaurant and enjoyed the experience of the ambiance of nice pictures of different boats. Our server was pleasant and friendly. The food was average. I got a shrimp pasta dish and the shrimp was not completely unshelled. It got very messy to eat. My wife enjoyed her meal and appetizer was okay. Excellent lunch spot off the beaten path in small shopping mall. Edilicios crab cake sandwich with jumbo lump and wonderful toasted bun with light butter . House salad with balsamic ...perfect . Wife had Asian flank salad to die for. Finely chopped Brussels sprouts , salad , tomatoes, Parmesan crisps all incredible flavors and portion size. I don't usually leave restaurant reviews, but felt compelled to do it this time. The 1st time we ate here, the food was average, but we wanted to give it a 2nd chance. Unfortunately, we will not be back. We had dinner reservations on a Sunday night and were seated right away. The restaurant was 3/4 empty, so we assumed the service would be prompt. We sat at our table for about 15 minutes until a server approached us. She gave us 2 waters, that were actually glasses of weird tasting flat club soda that came from a pitcher she thought was water. Anyway, after that was rectified, we ordered our dinner. My wife ordered a salad with a salmon topper. She said it was ok, but the portion was very small for the price. I ordered appetizers for my dinner - sea-cuterie, crispy brussels sprouts and crispy buttermilk calamari. The sea-cuterie was advertised as BBQ oysters, shrimp cocktail, seafood cake, and prosciutto-wrapped scallops. What I actually received were 2 scallops that were NOT wrapped with anything, shrimp cocktail consisting of 3 medium sized shrimp with weird tasting cocktail sauce, 3 tiny baby crab claws smothered in white aioli that I needed to rub off to get to the miniscule meat, and an inedible dry and black charcoal burned seafood cake shaped like a meatball. My guess is that they ran out of BBQ oysters and chose to substitute them with the tiny crab claws. I asked the waitress if she could get me an unburned seafood cake, which she did without question after looking at what I had in my plate. She came back with another seafood meatball that looked good from the outside, but was cold, hard as a rock, and dry as sand on the inside - again inedible. I gave up at this point on this plate, which was way over priced at $25 for the quality I received. My other 2 appetizers tasted good, but the crispy brussels sprouts were not crispy and they were swimming in loads of oil. The crispy buttermilk calamari tasted good, but was more mushy than crispy and many pieces were fused together. When the check came, the waitress offered to replace my clearly uneaten seafood meatball for another order of shrimp (3) cocktail, so kudos to Crystal! So clearly not a good dining experience. Come on Skipjack Dining, you should and NEED to do better than this. read more

While in Newark for work, my coworkers and I stopped at Skipjack b/c of all the great reviews. I have to say, however, that I was not a fan. The service was a little spotty/odd and the food just wasn't that great. I got the Crab Cakes entree and I really found the crab cake bland. Given that we've been visiting Newark for the last month, I've tried various crab cakes in the city, and this was did not compare at all. Simply not good or flavorful. I will not be back. read more

Happy hour - yes! $1.00 off drinks and a happy hour menu $5 dishes that are dinner if you want it to be. I elected to mix menus. I would have tried everything if I could. Tonight was Game night--So that meant duck, bison, rabbit, boar, venison served in a variety of ways. Meatballs, charcuterie, burger, reubenesque. I went seafood tonight from the mixed menu. One off of each menu. Happy hour-$5 seafood melt (what's in it? Whatever! Tonight was crab, shrimp and I think that was it along with melted cheese, mayo, Dijon and tomato on an English muffin), game night-$10 conch fritters with a mango chutney and plantains, and regular menu-a Mediterranean salad with chick peas, kalamatas, tomatoes, feta, picked onions over romaine. Are you hungry yet? I'm here for a week and I'm going back because I want to try the charcuterie board-cheeses, game dishes with the regular ecoutrement! And yet the place is SUPER casual with plenty of regulars. At one point the bar cheered because one of their own had just given birth to a beautiful baby (saw pictures from hospital) during happy hour :) It's for sure a locals place. We've been here several times over the years, always having something not go so well. Here for dinner. Got seated right away, even it was crowded. Our waitress was a little disheveled & very inattentive. I got a side salad & the beef tip cheese steak sandwich. Wife got a side salad with romaine lettuce that was brown & looked 3 days old. Her salmon was served cold/raw in the middle. Our Creme brûlée's were served cold and did not look or taste fresh. I think we gave this place our final consideration. Went here for Thanksgiving dinner and it was awesome! We had the cauliflower scampi and it was delicious. We also had the butternut squash ancho Chile soup and it was great! I had high hopes for this place. My friend has been talking them up, but they left me underwhelmed and disappointed. I ordered the fish tacos and it was inedible. It was incredibly salty. As it turns out, someone in the kitchen mistook Old Bay for cajun seasoning. Yikes. The kitchen apologized and remade my order, but even then I was not happy with the dish. The other menu offerings weren't bad. But why should I eat here if I can find more compelling menus a few short miles away on Main Street? Our server was the highlight of the visit. Funny, friendly, and knowledgeable. But wait staff typically isn't what attracts someone to a restaurant. I have a friend who swears by this place. His faith in them would be the only reason I give them a second shot. I hope your experience is better than mine. read more

Skipjack Dining is a great place to have a good meal away from the crowded E.Main dining near the U of D campus . It is located in a small shopping plaza just a few minutes north of Newark. The comfortable dining room and ample parking lot along with an outdoor dining patio makes the short ride worth the trip. The menu is limited but changes frequently. We enjoyed our seafood entrees and the excellent service that our waitress , Tara, provided. The cocktails and wine we also enjoyed with our meal were great ( terrific Peach Sangria). A shared dessert of Canolli Cake topped off the meal perfectly. This is a nice quiet dining room, perfect for a date night dinner. Make reservations, this is a small but popular place. read more

We live nearby and keep trying to give this establishment the benefit of the doubt, but we always end up disappointed. Almost every dish is so incredibly salty that they are inedible. Ordered the Manhattan Lobster Chowder and were told that they had run out of lobster and were substituting crab. Thought we'd give it a try. Was supposed to be a tomato broth but it was a dark brown broth with a bunch of overcooked vegetables with a few pieces of crab thrown in. We sent it back due to the extreme saltiness. Ordered the happy hour cheeseburger sliders which were good. Also got the Crab Imperial Potato Skins which were not bad but looked like they had been sitting around and were reheated. Expected the cheese on top to be fresh and bubbly but it was dried out and unappetizing. I order to be able to get the happy hour specials, one has to sit in the bar area which is small and very, very loud. I don't think we will be going back. read more

I enjoyed the atmosphere. The food and the pricing. We sat at the bar and Shelby our server was attentive. One of the staff was eating there and highly recommended the burger which I did have and thoroughly enjoyed. It was cooked to a perfect temperature. We had the Brussels sprouts as an appetizer and my husband had the French onion soups which had an amazing depth of flavor. First of all . Loved Donny Merrill's abilities as a chef since Krazy Kats . Been getting takeout at Skipjack's the last few months. Great Tuna , Swordfish, Halibut , etc. I work Sat til 6. Called for takeout . Message is this phone number is not taking calls. Called 27 times (believe or not )finally answered. Girl that answered said I don't think we are taking take out orders let me check. Comes back no take out. The phone problem has happened 2 other times. Unacceptable for a business! Too bad like I said this guy can cook, but he won't be doing it for me anymore cuz I'm done with Skipjack. read more

Just a quick note to share my appreciation for you, Colleen and the Skipjack.  Everything worked out well yesterday at Jim and Millie Prechtl's 60th anniversary.  Colleen was wonderful.  From the beginning, when some of us showed up early and immediately requested to change the table arrangement to one big table, she was very accommodating and flexible, quickly bringing in an additional table as we maneuvered the beautiful, heavy tables into a new configuration.  Through out the day she was pleasant, always available and willing to go above and beyond with anyone's request.  She has a lovely sense of humor, too!  She was patient with our diverse crowd, even accepting people changing their order with a big smile. She never showed signs of being stressed or "in the weeds." Above all, service was great!   Being a restaurant manager myself, I am acutely aware of the challenges of a 20-top:  too small for more than one server, but too big for one, unless that one is Colleen!  She was quick and accurate.  The food was delicious as well, particularly the Brussels sprouts and I know Millie particularly enjoyed her scallops.  Our thanks to the kitchen staff and chefs for their efforts.  Their cooking and service was very timely, even with additional add-on requests for more Brussels sprouts in the middle of finishing the entree/ main course preparation. Again, our appreciation goes to you and your staff.  Colleen and the chefs provided a wonderful meal and great service, an added tribute making the Prechtl 60th Anniversary even more special. read more

It was my turn to pick out a restaurant. So I picked Skyjack Dining. I even read the reviews on some of the items that was served. They had good reviews and very bad reviews. We were excited to go. I am one of the best food critics ever, I don't know why I am not working in that field, from texture to taste, I will break it down. I love flavor and good eating. Well let me get to the point. I was not satisfied whatsoever. Any restaurant that sells seafood, please know what you are doing. I love a crab bisque and it has to be right for me to enjoy. This has been the worst crab bisque I ever had in my life,(The can tasted better) It was a step away from being cold, I don't know what the hell that was. It tasted like it was gravy with this white stuff for garnish and a couple of crab morsels in it. I must say that the jerk wings was a win, I will get them again. My short rib entree wasn't bad, the mash was nuke warm and so was my meat. That gravy is just not a good one, it has this after taste that wasn't pleasant, I couldn't finish it, I ask for a to go bowl which I should have just left because I know that I will not eat it! My friend Gloria got the shrimp with noodles dish, she said that she will get it again, it just needs a little more sauce. I speak the truth, I know that everyone taste buds are not the same as mines. I normally do good picking and choosing the best, they depend on me for this, I am glad that it was only 2 of us, I would not of heard the end of it!!!!! So..went here based on Yelp reviews. Was pretty disappointed. Service was extremely slow (2 hour dining experience). Food was average, at best. Lobster bisque had one piece of lobster but was tasty. Tomato bisque was very good my friends tell me. After the soup and a 45 minute wait, entrees came and were mediocre. My Elk burger was good. My friend's beef Wellington was overcooked and the pastry was undercooked. Lobster grilled cheese was lacking cheese and the lobster was overcooked. Came to try the frame brûlée but ran out of time. Really enjoyed dinner here last Tuesday! The restaurant was quite busy but no wait for a table. Very great drink menu and had a Mad Hangar that didn't disappoint. We started with the fried Brussel sprouts in chili oil which were awesome; not drenched in oil like some places and with great flavor. I had the crab cake sandwich which was respectable. My daughter had the roast beef sandwich and really enjoyed it. She also got a key lime cheesecake to go and thought it was very good. I would return to this place. A nice classy environment and half of the customers have wine bottles on their tables when we came in. We came in around 7 pm, ordered the food and started the wait. The mini wellington was very delicious, and my surf n turf was OK. I personally don't like fried crab cakes so I didn't like what my friend got. The biggest problem was the wait. We actually set a timer and it took a good 50 minutes till we got the main courses. For two hungry guys, that was not acceptable. Despite the okay food, it was just not worth that wait. read more

Having adopted Low Carb Healthy Fat as a way of life, the ubiquitous carbohydrates are difficult to avoid but Skipjack was very accommodating! I had their 5 oz. Fillet with sauces on the side and double vegetables to avoid the potatoes that came with. The entree included a salad which they made Low Carb friendly. The grilled asparagus was perfectly seasoned and properly cooked. The fillet was a shade more done than the "rare" I prefer but it was also perfectly seasoned and the side sauces were wonderful complements. We tried this place for dinner with another couple and had a nice time. The food was good, and the service was excellent! The place does get a little loud with the bar really close and the tables are a little small as others have said... but based on the size of the place, it all works. My wife tried the crab cakes as they are supposed to be famous for them... she said they were good, but not the best she has ever had. The one thing I would recommend highly you try are the tater totes.. Not sure what they do with them, but WOW they are good.. We will def get them, even if just going for drinks. The food is always good. Despite being fairly pricey, you get a type of food that you can't really find anywhere else. The decor and set up is as unique as their menu. Bringing great flavors mixed into classic items, you can enjoy a great meal and some great drinks. Their specials never disappoint. Having dined at Krazy Kat's a number of times in the past few years (and loved it), I was very intrigued to hear that Mr. Merrill had decided to start his own venture. My girlfriend and I both enjoyed the crab soup, with generous chunks of lumb crab, as well as the Blue Point oysters - cold, fresh, and well paired with a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. For the entree course I had the Seafood Pasta - house-made pasta, a plethora of fresh shellfish, and a sauce that married everything perfectly. I recommended my lady try the crab cakes, knowing that if they are Chef Donny's recipe, they'll be phenomenal. Her plate was empty before mine! In short, you have to give this place a try. Seafood is the name of the game, but I would bet two crab cakes that the other fare is just as tasty. Our first time here. Smaller restaurant with about 20 tables and a bar area. Service was excellent. Attentive but not invasive. Allie was our server. She was very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. Food was delicious! We had the Red Snapper special which was cooked to perfection. My other friend has the Lobster Bisque, which too, was a special. Highly recommend trying it. It was creamy and delicious with a nice amount of lobster. From the soup to the crab cake sandwich, everything was awful. Crab soup was cold and had two slivers of crabmeat(?).Too much Sherry. The crab(?) cake for $20, had not one piece of jumbo crabmeat. It was all filler and wasn't fresh coming from the smell...It was inedible. I had a coke. When the waiter asked if I wanted a refill, he brought me iced tea. Save your money. read more
