I went in for a cut and color with the owner and walked out with a cut that was a lot shorter than I expected in the back, wasn't shown the cut or the back - just went right to bleaching, coloring, coloring again because the 1st result wasn't anywhere near what I asked for, then the colored a 2nd time which also came out too light. Left with a darker color but not really where I wanted it, being told to wash in the color depositing shampoo to add more color in and one of my sideburns was only half colored with the darker color appearing shorter than the other side. I went to a different salon to fix the very expensive cut and color I left Skull & Combs with. read more

I didn't have a good experience here at all. It took a while for someone to actually acknowledge me when I walked in for my appointment, and that was the only staff member that I felt like had a welcoming attitude. Unfortunately I didn't catch her name, but the general vibe here is very nonchalant, blase, and apathetic. My haircut with Val was disappointing and also painful. She cut off way more than the length I specified and she pressed the buzzer against my head way too hard. It took more than a month for my hair to start looking okay again, and I was really unhappy with the result. Several friends of mine have had the same experience unfortunately. read more

Not only is this establishment super swanky in the most welcoming way but they have they talent to back it as well. I've been coming here for the past couple months. First brought here by a friend who found a stylist off of Instagram (shout out to the talented Eva) I was just a mere observer turned believer. Eva did a phenomenal job listening to my own needs when I decided to sit in the chair. As you spend quite a bit of time in the salon you see how the other stylists get along and deliver quality hair styles. I drive 50 minutes to come here every 6 weeks. The only bonus is we get pizza in New Haven afterwards. But we mostly come for the hair cuts, company and service is always phenomenal! Highly recommend! read more

Yes, my name is Karen and yes, I'd like to speak to the manager but it's not what you think. I can't say enough good things about this salon or about Jemma. This was really one of my first ever salon experiences. I went on a few consultations at different salons because I wanted to be COMPLETELY confident in my stylist choice with what I wanted to do. I wanted to go from black to as light as my brittle damaged crazy curly hair would allow me. I was excited but omg so nervous. From the moment I stepped into Skull & Combs on State Street in New Haven, before I even sat in the chair, the energy in there alone told me I'd found the right place. It is SO clean, SO cool, and SO friendly. Then I had the absolute pleasure of meeting and consulting with the queen that is Jemma. She was so adorably funny & sweet, made me feel sooo comfortable, laughed at my jokes (always a way to score points in my book), but most importantly.. I could tell she really frikkin knew her stuff. After a "test" on my hair, I left there with a much better idea than I got any other place of what I could (& couldn't) realistically do with my hair. I booked my big change for two weeks out from that day with Jemma. Well.. my appointment was this past Sunday. OMG.. I can't even adequately express what an experience it was. Not only did the result absolutely blow my mind & I'm now currently utterly obsessed with myself but, my time spent there that day was just awesome. I felt SO comfortable, I felt SO cared about, and I felt SO appreciated. I not only recommend the heck out of this place but.. I can't wait to go back!! It ticks every single box you'd look for in a salon, I swear: clean, professional, friendly, easy to find, i had zero issues parking each time (believe it or not this was one of my biggest concerns with it being in new haven). UPDATE 7/8/2020 I had a haircut with Christie yesterday. I was nervous for a few reasons--it was my first time to a salon since the pandemic started and I was asking for a dramatic change, chopping my hair off into a pixie. The salon is taking every precaution to make things safe. They took my temp when I entered, asked me the usual covid questions. They sprayed my hands with sanitizer, then sprayed the chair where she cut my hair. And right before she washed my hair, they sprayed the chair at the wash station. There was a plastic shower curtain separating the two wash stations. They've changed the lounge furniture from upholstered sofas to vinyl couches, easier to clean and sanitize. Everyone wore masks. There were maybe a total of four stylists and three clients in the place, distanced apart. During the haircut I kept my mask on the entire time and Christie worked around it. She only asked me to take off one ear loop and hold the mask to my face while she trimmed around my ear, then the other side. As for the haircut, it was fantastic. I have really thin, straight, unmanageable hair due to some medical issues, and I had to get it cut. Christie thoughtfully considered my hair, we talked about what I wanted (something super short and no fuss to style). She took her time with the cut and gave me a great style. It was a huge change for me, the first time I've had short hair since I was a toddler. But I love the 'do and have no regrets. Many thanks to the salon for making me feel as safe as can be and huge thanks to Christie for tackling my difficult hair and turning it into something I love. Previous review: Eva was so great with my daughters. I FINALLY found someone to give my five-year-old a true pixie cut. Until now, every stylist has talked me out of a pixie cut. They seems to think I don't really want super short hair for my little girl. But Eva finally gave me exactly what I asked for and she did a perfect job. She also cut my ten-year-old daughter's hair and gave her a stylish shoulder length cut. She's so happy with her hair. The price makes mama happ too. We live a 1/2 hour away but it's worth the drive, we'll definitely be returning. read more

I went here for the first time and Jemma was a magician! I've never been happier with my hair. She took her time and was friendly and professional. Temperatures are taken and hands sanitized at the front door and common areas sanitized after use, so it helped put me at ease that they're following zCOVID regulations. I went for the first time recently, and I was blown away! I gave my stylist (Veronica) a heads-up that I had a LOT of hair. She quickly adjusted my appointment in order to accommodate my excessive amount of hair. I went for a total "transformative" hair-coloring session - and the results WAY exceeded my expectations! Veronica took her time to make sure my whole new look came out *just* right. I'm thrilled! Same as other reviewers, I walked by Skull & Combs a few times and commented that more women's hair salons should have such a cool interior. When searching for a new hair salon, I found out they also do women's hair. I booked an appointment online (very handy) for that night with Veronica. My haircut looks amazing, Veronica was so nice to talk to and gave me a KILLER blowout, and the entire staff was extremely kind. I ended up hanging around after my haircut talking to the owner about the history of the building and getting tips on the area (since I just moved here). Phoebe gave me the best layered cut/balayage/style I've had in New Haven (and I've been here for six years). My hair is super thin, so that took some magic. Sam did a fantastic job! It was the first time I've ever colored my hair and she took me from black to a rose-toned chocolate brown. She first lightened it using an extra additive to keep it healthy and then used a toner to get rid of the orangey undertone. I'm planning to go back so I can gradually transition to blonde. I totally trust her to get me there without damaging my hair or having to look like a backstreet boy in between lightenings. This girl knows what she's doing! And from what I saw of the other clients who came and went during my four hour session, the others there are also pretty expert. Ladies: Don't be fooled by the playful, laid back, tattoo parlor type vibe of the place. It's not just for rainbow-colored Mohawks and lumberjack beard trimmings. I've been going to Skull & Combs for a few months now as it was recommended to me by a friend in the industry. I am so glad I took that advice because Veronica makes my hair look amazing. She listened to what I was thinking about changing with my red and recommended I try balayage, which came out absolutely gorgeous. This shop is like a supercuts trying to be cool. You pay for the atmosphere and blasting music, not the quality of the cut. For the past week, I have been finding uneven bits of hair or places they missed (behind the ears, back of the neck). Staff was friendly and chipper. Greeted me and brought me water. During the consult i'd asked for 3/4 inch off my 3-4 inches of hair on top and a trim on the sides. Gave several reference photos and specifically called out that I wanted to keep the shape I had now. Haircut with Ari went well until she asked if I wanted more I wanted more off in the front to match the back. I checked them length with my hands. She'd taken the middle of my head down to 1/2 an inch and completely reshaped my hair style. It was asymmetrical and framed my face poorly. The owner shaped up the front to even it out and offered to comp the haircut which I declined. It's a job and stylist deserve the feedback without a financial hit. Will not be returning to Skull and Combs. Edit: The owner made an immediate effort to reach out and correct the issue. It's clear the company is not a bad business, but it's difficult to remedy a situation like the one I've been put in. read more

Great salon. Great people, great conversation. All I can say is they definitely know what there doing. One of the only salons you can take your whole family to and get your hair done. My man, my son, my daughter and I all get our hair done here. You normally have to go to different salons to get your entire family's hair cuts but not here. We all go. It's just a great place. So if you need a place to get your hair done and want just a regular old not good hair cut dont go here. But if you want a hair cut or hairstyle that people will compliment you on, skull and combs is the place to go. Go check them out for yourself. You won't be disappointed. Had my hair cut by Jason today and it was a lovely experience and I'm super pleased with my hair!!!!! He has great ideas and is willing to listen to what you want. He also took his time cutting my hair and at no point did I feel rushed. The salon is nicely done and the online booking system is a huge bonus. Easily the best place to get your hair cut near downtown. I've bounced around to several barbers/stylists (e.g. Phil's, Capture) before Skull and Combs and I feel as if others just give you a standard haircut at not-insignificant prices. The very first haircut I got here was, without doubt, one of the best I had. I'm bad with names but I believe Tyler cut my hair that time. It was very thoughtfully done. I sat down and he took time to assess my hair, wash it before the cut to see how it naturally is, and ask for clarification about exactly what I wanted to make sure he and I were on the same page. I returned a month after this haircut and the following one with a different stylist was just as pleasant and thoughtful. Will happily come back for future cuts. read more
