Can we give this meal 10 stars? Seriously the most delicious omelette, skillet potatoes, and melt-in-your-mouth biscuit ever to bless a breakfast plate. Was more than enough for the two of us to share, and the coffee, tea, and homemade jam added just the extra dose of glee to spruce up the morning. The only downside here is the longggggggg wait time for one of the limited seats in this small cafe. Delicious breakfast/brunch spot. Service was slow, but the food was tasty. They do not have any indoor waiting space and the place is tiny, so keep this in mind if you go when it's really cold outside or rainy. They literally will make you wait outside in the rain for a table. We went on a Monday morning around 10am and had a 20 minute wait for a table of 4, in the rain and cold. If I could give no star I would. This is the worst place I have every been. Im not going to say they are racist but.... they probably are!! I walked in the door and instantly felt as if they did not want to serve me. I was never greeted and the people were looking at me like I was a crazy person from the moment I walked in. Sky Blue cafe is like seeing the blue sky after a week of rainy days - I'm so glad we found this eatery. We visited Nashville over a long weekend and were staying in an Airbnb a block away. It was so convenient for us to walk over. The wait was 45 minutes but you get COFFEE while you wait! There's seating outside to grab a cup of joe and mingle with other Airbnb'ers, locals, and people who come all the way across the city to have breakfast here. Coffee tastes how coffee should taste (local roaster, no wonder). Staff is kind, helpful, and approachable. I ordered the Tuscan 2.0 which is a piece of thick bread topped with an over easy egg, tomatoes, chiles, pesto, and Parmesan cheese. Maybe a weird thing to have for breakfast but I couldn't get enough. I actually asked for another piece of bread with pesto on it to keep eating the leftover tomatoes. I would go back just for that. My boyfriend got Em's bowl which he said was tasty too. This was our favorite breakfast in Nashville. read more

I have no idea why this place is rated so well. Everything I had was either bad or on par with your typical diner. I ordered French toast, grits, home fries, and eggs. The French toast was basic and tasted like it could've been from the microwave. The batter definitely could've used more seasoning. The grits were watery and mealy so I sent them back. The home fries were just fried potatoes that came out cold, so I asked for another batch, they clearly just microwaved the old batch I had. And the eggs were so runny that there was a pool of liquid around them. Everyone at my table had some kid of complaint about everything except the orange juice, which is freshly squeezed. Although he motored through his meal like there was a Jericho Trompete overhead, I was in the trenches with a pretzel bun that was about as soft as Henry VIII on Cialis. After assessing the base of the bun was the perpetrator, I circumvented the Maginot Pretzel and tussled with a mediocre piece of beef with forgettable accompaniments. Interesting location. I've lived in Nashville for about a year. Sky Blue was the first breakfast spot I went to in Nashville, from Portland, Oregon -- land of breakfasts/brunch. I've been seven or eight times, and I've been pleased every time. The restaurant is a little tight, but I get that they have a heavy brunch crowd that they're trying to squeeze in, and I've always had enough space to eat and be merry, so I can't complain too much. I have almost always had to wait here, but they're generally pretty good about estimating time so it's never been too horrible. (Might I suggest a coffee station outside on the weekends?) I've had scrambles and the stuffed french toast with bacon, eggs and cheese (which was INSANE to order SO MUCH FOOD but really, really good). On my last visit, I ordered the croque monseir, which was SO, SO GOOD. I immediately wanted to come back the next morning and order it again. The service has always been decent, attentive and polite. In my opinion, Sky Blue seems to have turned into a Sunday morning gay mens brunch club and liberal salon - where gossip and policy are shared over chai teas and eggs. Needless to say, I'm a fan of this as I enjoy policy, gossip, and eggs but not chai. I had brunch there yesterday and it was a life changing experience. Perhaps I over-reacted because I was hung-over and the combination of biscuits and gravy, eggs, hashbrowns, and cheese served in a large bowl blew my mind wide open. I literally could not stop talking about how good it was and making sexy noises. On another note, my friend Deb commented throughout the entire meal on all the tall drinks of sexy water that would sadly never be for her. If you go for brunch I would strongly suggest sticking toward the heartier dishes. Unfortunately the wait is always an hour, so know that going in. The restaurant is really small so there isnt anywhere to wait inside, so you will also want to make sure the weather is decent. Once you get past this lets say its worth it. The menu isn't extensive, mostly offering classics, bowls, omelettes and basic benedicts, however unlike so many Nashville places, the prices are fair and a proper reflection of what you get (breakfast). It trips me up to see so many places offering $18 canned crab benedict. The food itself is really good. I got a hot chicken benedict special from the local winner of the hot chicken festival. It was a really odd dish that they made work really nicely for $9 or $10. The best part was the perfectly seasoned, heartily complex home fries. I live on the east side in walking distance and will be visiting again, pronto. read more

News that made my week (and came to me courtesy of the Yelpy words of our very own Marcia M.): Sky Blue Cafe now serves dinner! Of course I had to go at the first possible opportunity. We ordered many delights, including the pesto and sun-dried tomato torta (with perfectly toasted toasts and not those overly crusty 'crostini' that cut your mouth), roasted chicken with salsa verde (and rosemary shoestring fries and a mad delicious aioli sauce), and the stuffed pork loin with walnut pesto (I only got a bite of this one and man, was it good). I can also now say that I've fulfilled my destiny as a Southerner, as we tried the fried oreos with a delicious mug of cappuccino creme. Yum, yum, yum. After our meal, the chef, Dylan, came out to check on us and tell us about their new dinner venture. I'm most excited about the butternut squash lasagna-with fresh, house-made pasta rolled out with the herbs in the noodles-which he promised to make special just for me next Tuesday night when I return. :) read more

In Nashville for just one night, I knew I wanted some kickass brunch before I left in the morning, so I dragged my husband along on an adventure to a part of town not on the tourist map. Once again I used the ever-useful Yelp app for iPhone and found Sky Blue Cafe, which serves crazy-good food with a ton of vegetarian options. But I've got to warn y'all, the Google map directions are ever-so-slightly off. If you're a Nashvillian, then you'll be fine but we, both being directionally impaired out of towners, were a bit thrown off and too turned around for me to describe here what exactly one should do differently. But, eventually, we made it! It's really just across the bridge from downtown; not far at all. (All over again, I'm feeling abashed for my lack of navigation skills.) Our wait for a table was about twenty minutes, give or take. There really isn't anywhere to sit to wait; you kind of just huddle by the door, in the way of anyone else entering. You could wait outside, but not if it's hot as Hades, as it was on this particular morning. I was also afraid that, since there wasn't an official wait list and there were a few parties before and after us, that the two folks working the front of the house would forget about us. In retrospect, that may have been the hunger and recent near-death experience talking. What near-death experience, you ask? Well, there I was, in the not-so-great part of town, when I was cut off by a Buick that had seen better days. Having only two weeks earlier been hit by a car in a very similar situation, I hit the brakes and the horn. The car, full of four twenty-thirtyish women, cut across three lanes of traffic, narrowly avoiding a collision with my front passenger's side bumper, then laid on their own horns, each taking turns to roll down their windows, and cuss me out and flip me off with vigor. "Eyes on the road, Helena K., eyes on the road!" I thought as the women continued to drive alongside us. A woman in the backseat opened her door and, hanging with two appendages outside the door and two in, cussed at me with a passion that would, under different circumstances, be quite admirable. I sped up and the ladies---I use the term loosely---turned off. Whew. Too much to deal with before coffee! So, yes, but the coffee at Sky Blue is fantastic. And the breakfast burrito made me want to cry, it was so delicious. The portions are reasonable, too (not too massive), as are the prices. This is a charming little neighborhood place. read more

I'm a huge fan of breakfast food, and any independent restaurant that serves breakfast all day. My friend and I stopped in for brunch on a Thursday. We were promptly greeted and told to sit anywhere. We took are seats and were offered coffee immediately. The coffee was steaming hot and super tasty. It was hard to decide what to get. The menu was very diverse and each dish looked creative a delicious. I went well the stuffed french toast pancakes with nutella and bananas and a side of bacon. My friend got the breakfast burrito. While we were waiting on our food we sipped coffee and had fun with the Trivial Pursuit cards we found on the table. We also were amazed by the wonderful local art that hung on the walls. Our food arrived and we were amazed at how delicious it looked and smelled. The french toast pancakes were enough for 2 people. It was a pancake topped with a slice of french toast topped with nutella and banana and another slice of french toast and another pancake. It was ridiculous, but so good. The breakfast burrito was a spinach tortilla stuffed with home fries, eggs, peppers and onions, cheese and tomatoes. The whole thing was topped off with vegan chili and more cheese. We ended up trading plate 1/2 way through brunch. Everything was incredibly fresh and oh so yummy. I will be back and here and often. read more

The waitresses who work here are pretty rude but I didn't even care the food was so good! lol. My only complaint was I got an orange juice and it was like a quarter full. The French bread for my BBB was absolutely perfect and paired with a big ol' cup of coffee with sugar-free hazelnut... this broad was hap-pay. They refill your cup like it's going out of style at no additional cost. Service was friendly and efficient and who doesn't just adore the charm of this place? Trivial Pursuit on our table and lingering conversations make Sky Blue the perfect spot for a low-key hang. My only complaint is being the reigning self-titles tater tot queen, I couldn't understand why they offer cheesy tater tots here but couldn't adjust my order to exclude the cheese. My friend and I enjoyed a delicious mid-day meal (I had lunch, he had breakfast) at this cozy cafe. I wasn't feeling well, but my two lunch sides were fresh and delicious (the vegan chili hit the spot... although I do love to slather my chili with tons of sour cream...the fresh tomato garnish was still good). The breakfast looked DELICIOUS and the portion was out of control giant (the little nibbles that I stole proved that the tasted matched the looks!) The freshest, and I mean FRESHEST, navel orange juice I've had outside of central FL. I was raised on fresh orange juice growing up near orange groves - not that "from concentrate" crap in the stores - and all mass produced OJ is the same ground up rinds filtered and called real juice, by the way. After a long weekend of partying at Bonnaroo until the sun comes up, copious amounts of weed and alcohol, and making questionable choices with total strangers, this was my saving grace to get rejuvenated and back to the daily grind. The portion sizes will fill most anyone's stomach, and the special with the sausage gravy is so good it'll make a grown man cry. Plus, it's in hipster East Nashville. Several people had told me that this was a great place for breakfast/brunch so fiance, myself and a friend went to have what we expected to be a delicious meal. We got there and found out the wait was an hour. This was to be expected. We weren't super hungry and so we didn't mind waiting a bit. There was some complimentary coffee outside which was great and the hostess was very friendly and nice. We finally enter. Our server was very kind and asked us what we wanted and I think it took us a few minutes to decide and so he came with our drinks. But between the drinks and our actual order it took him a while. Granted it was busy and Sky Blue is rather small, but still I compared our wait time to the table next to us and there was a bit of a difference. Anyways, we ordered and maybe I should have ordered some breakfast food but I wanted a burger so I ordered a burger, my fiance ordered the hot chicken benedict [special of the day] and our friend ordered the breakfast sandwich with bacon. Our food took forever. And I mean about 20 to 30 minutes. I'm not sure why it took so long but by the time I got my food, I was starving and though I noticed that my burger was cooked well done despite my order of medium, I decided to let it slide because I wasn't about to wait another 20 minutes for my food. The burger had sounded so good but ended up begin rather mediocre. The home fries were pretty good. I tried some of the hot chicken and that was rather average as well. I also sat next to the garbage can and so I wasn't super happy about that. Oh well. Anyways, it would have been fine if this had ended there but afterwards both my fiance and I started to feel sick, him worse than me. Not sure what the cause of it was but it really ruined our experience with Sky Blue. [We did not eat anything other than Sky Blue that day] Needless to say, it just wasn't our cup of tea. As in, French toast, covered with bananas and Nutella, stuffed between two pancakes larger than my head (caveat: I have always had a rather small head). Yes, this is a thing, and it is glorious. When I am not feeling in touch with my inner obese person, I lean towards the varied egg options available at Sky Blue; my particular favorite is the Space Captain, and this is not even solely because of its fantastic name. The Space Captain is an omelet featuring spinach, mushrooms, onions, veggie sausage, and pesto. And as I am pretty sure Albert Einstein once said, "Only two things are infinite--human stupidity and the greatness of pesto." Excuse me if I'm paraphrasing here. Be ready for a long wait if you intend to come here. On average, I have waited for about 45 minutes to an hour. Recommended to come on nice days, so you can sit outside and imbibe the free coffee in massive amounts (I figure I am drinking the value of my lost time). Just like good ol Roy "Booze Til Ya Loose" Acuff, my favorite meal of the day is breakfast, and this is my favorite place to eat the previously stated meal (breakfast). Sky Blue Cafe was founded in 1886 (the same year President Abraham Lincoln was elected 17th president of the United States of Union (the name would later be changed to The United States of America after the British were defeated at the Battle of Alamo). After the initial opening, Sky Blue became the most popular destination for happy travelers of the Oregon Trail. They would enjoy pumpkin spice lattes and mimosas while studying the Big Dipper and following the North Star. At the turn of the century, Sky Blue Cafe expanded their seating from 4 tables to 8 tables (and 2 booths). This massive expansion was indicative of the Industrial Revolution and the wealth that was brought to Nashville by the Grand Ole Opry's first broadcast in 1916. "Yoo hoo hoo! Everybody eat at Sky Blue!" That was the original radio advertisement that ran from 1916 to 1973 (this ad would later be replaced by a disco-themed tune citing all the delicious reason to "boogie on down to Sky Blue Cafe...the Studio 64 of the South" With such a hallowed history, this honored hall of hospitality has housed memories of dining experiences that will continue for years to come. I've been here several times during the last few years. I've kept going back because I want Sky Blue to be a good local option. However the "breakfast" I experienced Sunday AM is the final straw. In addition to the floors and table being kind of grimy, the food was bland and the coffee was watery. The egg on the croque madam I ordered was not just runny, it was as close to uncooked as you could get. My wife ordered a side of bacon that was also undercooked; not chewy but actually not cooked enough. Unless someone buys this place and replaces the kitchen staff I won't be going back. read more

And yes the swarms of flies were disgusting, but those are only icing on this terrible cake. I went to Sky Blue last Sunday with a group of 5 people and I can safely say not a one of us plan on ever setting foot in this establishment again. The service was terrible, food was mediocre and the tables were literally covered in flies (wish I had taken a picture). We waited 90 minutes, no joke, for 3 omelets and 2 eggs benedicts! I have never in my life waited so long for some eggs, stale dry white bread and dry nasty grits. The grits were the absolute worst I have ever had- I cannot tell if they sat on the stove for the 90 minutes we waited for our food or if the chef just forgot to cook them. And our server, well she just said they are really busy on Sundays- there was no apology, no comped beverage, nothing, just unapologetic 'tude. But the icing on the cake had to be the hair that came on my friend's fruit. Unless you like bad food, terrible service and enjoy swatting flies, do not bother with this place... although my guess is they won't be around long. Thanks to Groupon I found this little gem of a cafe. I was there for breakfast and had a really difficult time deciding what I wanted to try. Ultimately I chose the Stuffed French Toast Pancakes with eggs, cheese, and veggie sausage. It was a good decision for my taste buds but probably not the best for my waistline, as it's a lot of food! It's two pancakes, two pieces of french toast, 2 eggs and 2 (or maybe 3) patties of veggie sausage. I also had a very unique drink called a Watermelon Basil Agua Fresca, which wasn't on the menu, so I'm not sure if it's something special for the day or they just haven't updated the menu. I don't recall ever having basil in a drink, but it was a tasty and refreshing experience. Ask for it! Parking is mostly on the street, and the place was a bit crowded for a 10:30 breakfast on a Saturday morning, but we didn't have any problems finding a parking place or a table. Also, as an added bonus, they have Trivial Pursuit cards on the tables for conversation starters. Note: They're only open until 3pm, so catch them for breakfast or lunch. read more

I was apparently not the only one with the place on my mind, because it was pretty crowded when we arrived at 10am on a Sunday morning. We waited about 40 minutes for a table. The interior is small, but not cramped. It's warm and cozy with work from local artists on the walls. They have a pastry case displaying all their baked goods against one wall. The menu is amazing. It took a while for me to decide on just one dish. I ordered the breakfast burrito, filled with scrambled eggs, sauteed peppers and onions, and topped with chili, sour cream, cheese, and pico. I was so excited by the prospect of vegetarian chili. The meal did not disappoint; it was filling and delicious. AM ordered Em's Bowl, and the waitress was very helpful and accommodating with some special requests she had. Our plates were both clean by the end of the meal, so that's a good sign! Who can resist breakfast all day? I'll be the first to admit that I love me some fancy brunch at Marche, but sometimes simple is better, and that's where Sky Blue comes in. You'll find the usual breakfast repertoire here - Eggs, potatoes, meat, a stuffed french toast or two, and Trivial Pursuit on every table. On my last trip I tried the Mediterranean omelet. It wasn't the best thing I've ever ordered here, but it wasn't bad. The salty olives were a little overpowering and it could have used some melty cheese in addition to the feta cheese. The hash browns were delicious and perfectly seasoned, and my friends both enjoyed their meals. I do have to say, I miss the old Sky Blue. It seems more inconsistent these days under new ownership. I've never had a bad experience here, but I know a few people who have. I miss the old menu with the Frito pie and those breakfast burrito bowls. Still, I keep coming back for a cozy, cheap, comfort food breakfast, and Sky Blue hits the spot for that. Pro tip - Sky Blue is tiny, and it can get hard to get a table on the weekends during peak brunching hours (there's not much room to wait for your table inside, either). Went here for breakfast today and was immediately put off by the apparent "don't give a damn" attitude. While waiting, I went to use the restroom and left my 11year-old son at the small foyer of the restaurant. When I returned he was nowhere to be found. Then I saw him...standing outside, alone, in the 14-degree weather! When I asked why he was outside in the cold alone, he told me that they made him wait outside because it's so small inside the place. I checked with the person keeping the names in the list and they verified. We left immediately. Sky Blue won't be getting my business again nor that of anyone who will listen to me. I don't think I need to further explain why, but isn't it basic common sense to NOT send an 11 year-old out into the frigid temps without a parent? You blew it, Sky Blue. read more
