I find myself in the Mission every now and then for a drink. I always can count on Skylark as the spot for locals to get some really inexpensive mixed drinks. If you are looking for dark, divey, and cheap drinks this is the place to be. Pours are quite generous and you're not spending a fortune for a gin & tonic. They have a large selection of spirits to choose from so I'm sure you'll find something. Skylark- A local neighborhood bar in the Mission. Last night I just needed a night out due to a frustrating day. Luckily I remembered my friend throws parties here every Wednesday, so I knew were to go. I don't usually hang out on the weekdays but I hear Wednesday nights here is the place to be. When I arrived, barely no one was there, so my friend and I had a drink. 30 mins later a couple of my other friends joined me and I noticed the place got packed! We were lured into this bar one Friday night after seeing a sign outside mentioning their burlesque show. The environment inside is dark and low key. There was mainly just one bartender there during my visit, but he was able to manage all of the drink orders very well. The cocktails and other drinks are fairly priced. The cocktails taste good, but not super memorable. For unique craft cocktails, there are plenty of other choices within a mile of this place. This place is perfect if you just want to hang out somewhere without any extra frills and enjoy yourself. Some tough security guards at club entrance in search for weapons on body and personal belonging. Once we paid to get in the club, we were greeted by friendly staffs at the bar with full variety of liquors to get our party going so as the DJ's up beat music to get our bodies grooving. This place is awesome. I went last weekend with a couple friends from work and initially wasn't super excited but after being there for 15 min. I started to feel much better and relaxed. The Bartender was super cool and funny not to mention absolutely bomb and on point. I expected her to be stuck up based on how most good looking bartenders are but to my surprise she had me cracking up and laughing with both my buddies. My friends and I waited an hour and a half to get in. While being in front of the line we literally watched security and the promoters letting in random groups in not even VIPS or people with table. They would tell us max capacity and then some random group come, begged the security and promoters they would literally let them in while telling the people that has been waiting for 1-2 hours they're at max capacity. After trying to recover from a difficult pandemic, I think I speak for everyone when I say a fun night out was much needed! Everything was good from getting checked at the door, to walking in, the music was bomb. I get to the bar, and wait for my bartender. A girl asks me what Im looking for, I asked her how much a shot of Don Julio Reposado would be (just got charged $50 a shot earlier at another spot, did not want to do that again) and the girl looks me dead in the eye and mockingly with a huge joker smile on her face and says "DONT ASK ME QUESTIONS LIKE THAT" Ok, whatever, I kept it lit and made a joke about coming back from a pandemic (losing a job, friends, property, all flashing in my mind) I tried laughing it off. So she asks what I wanted, I told her tequila reposado but in a mixed drink. She brings back a tequila Ive never seen before, I try to get a closer look and turn to my friend to see if she approves, and the bartender SNAPS, yelling at me that I need to hurry up that I am "not the only person at the bar", literally snapping at me with the ugliest attitude. Of course, I snap back too and tell her I don't need her help anymore. Is asking prices and what I'm shoving in my body a party foul? Like, I really want know It was an ugly situation and she put on quite a show. I grabbed my friend and LEFT! I told the man at the door "That bartender is super rude" He asked who and as soon as I described her "The girl behind the bar with a white tank top and red lipstick" He immediately knew who I was talking about. So clearly, poor service is her identifier. I also work behind a bar at a fast paced establishment and would NEVER speak to anyone like that. I would've taken a passive aggressive "I'll come back to you, I have a line" and probably been ignored for 5-10 minuets over the way she yelled at my like that. Surprised she has a job. The space is large, ample TVs and great music. Almost every night of the week they have some themed party, but shout out to free burlesque/comedy nights on Fridays! While to some, this may be "just another dive" in the mission.... The glue that keeps me coming back is the service. Jordan and Dino (who I hear is no longer there, Hi Dino!) are engaging, charismatic bartenders that are quick on their toes. Zero attitude and always keeping your drinks filled with a smile.... Ghetto- FABULOUS. This is one of my favorite places to hit up when I am in the Mission. Yes - the crowd can be a bit intense sometimes - people ready to fight outside, bouncers yelling at people, a mob outside, but just be smart and go with a group of people (A group of 3 little girls here would be a bad idea!). Once you get through the initial culture shock of the outside, you'll hit up fast working bartenders; a row of cozy little tables with candles and a dance floor in the back. The DJ's spin a variety of hip hop (mostly) and top 40. The crowd there just loves to groove and boogie and it always puts me in the mood to whip my hair bath and forth. The DJ's are really nice - if you type in your song request on your phone and show the DJ they'll usually play it (a dance part isn't complete without BRITNEY) or if you ask for a BDAY shout out -- they'll do it for you without giving you a hard time! The escape plan out of this neighborhood isn't too bad, getting a cab has been pretty easy around here. Some tables to sit but it's a narrow bar (like the rest of SF haha) with a small dance floor playing old school hip hop CROWD: mixed, kinda ghetto OVERALL: This is the type of place you go to chill or pregame for a bigger place haha, not one to spend all night at unless you really just want something low-key. For better or for worse, Skylark has become the Boones (aka Triangle Lounge) of old. On most nights the crowd is local and therefore chilled and there just to have a good time. And on most nights, the dance floor, with its sparse lighting and overpowering strobe lights are the perfect storm for the beer goggle patrol to come out. Plus, its male and female bathrooms are next to the dance floor, which the patrons are notorious for leaving open. I'm glad I love all sorts of music. Sometimes when I'm not in the mood for some Judas Priest or loungey Brazilian bossa nova, I love listening to hip hop. Back then I used to go to shows in the late 90s/early 00s to check out DJs spinning dope ass beats in the background while b-boys battle each other on the dance floor. Went here last night because my cousin and my other friend were spinning at The Deuce (event that takes place every last Sunday here) and since I'm going to be leaving this beautiful city in a couple days, I had to come out and play and see them one last time! It was pretty chill and laid back and the music (hip hop, including yay area classics, funk and soul) was poppin' (just like my lipgloss!) and the drink special of the night were peach bellinis which I happily sipped the whole night. I didn't get up to dance (food coma---they had birthday cake for some of the DJs and sandwiches) but I had a good time talking to folks and enjoying the music. Sad to say we went here on New Year's Eve and it was a huge disappointment. They charged $5 before 10PM, which okay fine it's NYE, acceptable. In order to make those drinks taste like a normal goose and tonic, my friends had to order a shot of goose and a shot of gin, then separately and pour it into their goose/gin and tonic. That's just all bad. Killed the mood and the experience. Could have just made some drinks at home. As the night progressed, sluttier and sluttier, yet fatter and fatter chicks kept arriving. They thought they were hot ish because they started dancing on each other where people were sitting near the bar. NOT CUTE if you're larger than life. Have some class. It's not a hoe show. The dance floor was packed. After the clock struck twelve and everyone started trickling out a million people tried to exit as two of my friends tried to head to the dance floor o the right side of the road. Everyone was stuck in a jam and this fattty mcfat fat (seriously huge) decided to yell at my friend, saying "move your fat ass." This coming from her to him when he is a stick. Hilarious! Went in here a few months ago with some friends for happy hour during the day. The waitress was friendly and made strong drinks. My friends and I were one of the few people in the bar. The best thing that Skylark has going for it is the music! You might not think it from outside, but they always have some bangers to play here! Aside from the music, it's an OK environment. Nothing super special though. Their selection of drinks is pretty nice; they always are able to make my favorite couple of drinks for not a lot of money! The prices are pretty decent here, especially considering its location in the Mission. It's a really nice place for an after-work or school drink with coworkers or friends. The thing I don't like so much about Skylark is how crowded it is. It's a pretty small place with a small dance floor, which doesn't allow for much movement or dancing for that matter. It's pretty dive-y, which is great for people who like that a lot, but I'm not the biggest fan of that, but I'll still go sometimes for decently priced drinks, good music and pupusas next door! One thing that sticks out to me was that the people at the door seemed pretty damn unprofessional with charging cover. When my two friends and I got to the entrance, I got that vibe that they just started to just $5 cover when we got there. Maybe it was $5 all night, but I still got a vibe that we got owned and they just wanted to spite us.
