I went for lunch on a Saturday. The food was outstanding. For some reason Yelp isn't loading my picture. I got the spicy beef soup. Ordinarily, I don't care for the texture of shredded beef, but that's not on them, and the food was terrific. The banchan were plentiful and tasty; the cabbage kimchi was a standout. So why only 3 stars? From the beginning, the waiter, an older gentleman, was unsmiling. That's ok. I don't need him to smile or be friendly. I just need him to be a good waiter. But he wasn't -- at least not to me. He didn't check back on me even once. Never asked if I needed water, more banchan, another beer, never even glanced at me. He passed me multiple times, however, to dote on the other 3 tables that were occupied while I was there. I was the only one he completely ignored. There are three possible explanations that I could come up with, since when I spoke to him he assured me I had not offended him in some way. The first explanation, although unacceptable, isn't sinister. The other two are problematic. 1. I was the only one sitting by myself, and he thought he'd get a bigger tip at the other tables. It's not an ok thing to do: ignoring solo diners. But it happens, and I know everyone's got to make a living. This is the *most* benign explanation I can come up with. Or . . . 2. I was the only non-Asian in the place. 3. I was the only person with a visible disability in the place. I gave the waiter a chance. I calmly and quietly asked him to explain why he had ignored me completely and served the other tables to my exclusion. His answer: "I didn't want to disturb you." No, I didn't buy that either, and I told him so. I'm not quick to jump to conclusions like #2 or #3, but it's not looking good at this point for Kim's BBQ. I have friends who live and eat in PV, and God help this restaurant if I ever conclude that either of those is the reason for my treatment today. If I ever conclude that, I will not let it go. My wife and I visited this Korean BBQ restaurant on a Monday evening around 6:30pm. The restaurant was only about one-third full, and after a short wait, we were seated in the middle of the dining room. Unfortunately, that was the last interaction we had with the staff. After being seated, we waited approximately 15 minutes without a single server coming by to greet us, take drink order, or acknowledge our table. We then began trying to get someone's attention. Between the two of us, we waved multiple times at each of the three waiters on the floor, as well as an older woman who appeared to be the manager or person in charge. Every time, they looked directly at us and then continued doing whatever they were doing without coming over. We spent another 5-10 minutes trying to flag someone down, but still not a single employee came to our table. At that point, we were honestly in disbelief! We've never walked out of a restaurant before, but after waiting 25 minutes with zero service and repeated attempts to get assistance, we finally got up and walked out. What makes this even more disappointing is that we had come intending to support a local business and order the mid-level $150+ bbq dinner combo for two. Instead, we left feeling ignored and unwelcome. We understand that restaurants can get busy and that mistakes happen. However, this wasn't a case of slow service--it was a complete lack of service despite multiple efforts to get anyone's attention. I was in the area and really hungry, so I searched for highly rated Asian food nearby and decided to give Kim's BBQ a try. I arrived early for lunch and was their first customer of the day, which made for a very relaxed experience. I was able to choose a comfortable booth and was helped quickly. I ordered the bibimbap and asked if they had hot barley tea. They did, and I was genuinely excited because a lot of Korean restaurants in California don't offer it. I love having hot barley tea with Korean food, so that was a big plus for me. The banchan came out in generous portions. Everything was tasty, especially the seaweed dish and the sliced fish cake, which I really enjoyed. The kimchi was on the mild side -- personally I would have liked a little more spice -- but it was still good. The bibimbap itself was flavorful, filling, and satisfying. The only thing I didn't care for was the side of rice. It just wasn't very good, which is unusual because rice is usually one of the easiest things to get right. I only took a couple bites of it, but fortunately there was plenty of other food, so it didn't really affect the meal overall. What stood out most to me was how comfortable and relaxed the restaurant felt. They have spacious seating, comfortable booths, and a nice sound system that gives the place a good atmosphere without being overwhelming. Went here the other night for the first time and the experience was mediocre. Pros: Great side dishes, friendly staff, clean facility, & quick service. Cons: Extremely overpriced for basic meats & meals. Arguably predatory. The cheapest combo was over $100 for 2 people. You would think that for the price, you'd at least have more variety within the combos and/or all you can eat options. I've been to several KR BBQ spots over the years (including Koreatown), and I promise you, this was far from spectacular. But I understand that the extremely high price of the food has little to do with the quality of the food, and more with the location. As another reviewer mentioned, its the only KR bbq spot on the hill. So if you live or work near Kims BBQ and you're ok with spending hundreds of dollars for average KR bbq, then go for it. If not, then drive 15 mins to Torrance, and you'll have way better options for way cheaper. read more

Having kbbq in PV is insane. Never did I ever imagine this happening, all the kbbq and anything asian would usually be in Torrance or Gardena. Anyway, that's not to say this isn't a welcome addition. Contrary to that, Kim's BBQ is a huge welcome to PV. It's not AYCE and it's pricier but it works. They'll cook the meat for you and yadda yadda. The one quip I do have is that the standard stew and steamed eggs are add-on options instead of being included with the combos. Now they serve non-Kbbq food as well and also have lunch specials if you want that instead. We'll have to try that next time, but everything overall was pretty decent for what you can get in Palos Verdes. The restaurant is a little small but it can get real busy especially on weekends. The good: I got the combination platter of bbq meats for 2-3 people that was $88 and included bulgogi, jowl, pork belly and brisket. It also came with 3 pieces of mushroom, 1 asparagus and a slice of white onion. They have a la carte options too as well as speciality dishes that aren't bbq (ex: bibimbap). I thought the gold metal dishes were pretty and unusual (usually Korean restaurants have the silver). The interior is modern and sleek with a really cool wood wall with built in lights. We got a side of rice that was very moist and yummy. The meat quality was nice and the presentation was excellent. They cook the meat for you in front of you on your individual grill. I came on a Monday and we were seated right away. We also had grape soju that was enjoyable. The bad: I wish the front door were open for ventilation because the fumes inside made me cough. It was interesting how you only got one asparagus spear. The food took longer than expected to come out. The food is all raw so I was surprised that it took so long. We finished the combo with the 2 of us but I think we would've been hungry if there were 3 people. I've had combos for 2-3 at other Korean bbq places before that offered a larger quantity. First time there was Christmas Day. It was good food what bothered me the most was that we waited 30 minutes for someone to bring the check and boxes. The older man was giving more attention to the family of 6 or 7. We were the only other table in the whole restaurant and it was just two of us. The older man was literally cooking the food for them (never been here but been to other Korean BBQ places & usually the cooking is done in the kitchen or by the customer on the grill) he paid zero attention to us. Until finally a server noticed I was staring at them. She asked if I wanted the check I said yes. Still didn't get the check until someone else clocked in which was an additional 10 minutes after the girl noticed me. Here's the deal - with every bone in my body, I cannot recommend coming here as the price to quality ratio is not worth it. I spent around $100 for KBBQ that was overcooked, low quality, and tasteless. It saddens me to even write this review because I promised to never write something below a 3 again. Obviously, this review is based on my own experience, where the staff cooked for us (just like at Baekjeong and other KBBQ spots). But in truth, even if I told them I wanted to cook for myself, which I usually do, the meat quality+sides+sauce wasn't going to improve my rating any higher. I was there to observe their process for this review, which is why I did not intervene. ***STORY TIME*** I found Kim's BBQ before they even opened. I was driving around PV last year and their sign caught my eye. Kim's BBQ? In PV? Does KBBQ even exist over here? Intrigued, I pulled into the plaza. The parking lot is huge, and seeing that it's PV, I had a feeling they would be a quality BBQ restaurant. Two weeks later, they opened. I walked in for the menu, took a photo and immediately uploaded it to Yelp so that everyone could see the prices. The prices seemed fair, if the quality was high. I followed them on Instagram and constantly checked their Yelp. Reviews were positive, so I felt good about coming some day. Fast forward months later, and I'm ready to try Kim's BBQ out. It was a Tuesday night, right before I was planning to watch the new Mario movie. Looked at the menu and settled for the COMBO MIXED - $88. We were a party of two. The price is in line with what I'd expect for premium KBBQ. Except it wasn't. ***REVIEW TIME*** Alright, time for the food & service review. For reference, you get thinly sliced brisket, pork belly, pork jowl, a choice of bulgogi or beef belly, and rice. Of course, you get the classic side dishes (banchan) as well. BANCHAN REVIEW: Oh my god, I would have been okay with selection being BORING if it wasn't for it also tasting extremely normal. It's kimchi, pickled radish (ssam mu), and macaroni. No potato salad or cubed potatoes, just straight up macaroni. And it was forgettable! Now, before I get into the meat, let me begin by saying the waitress/waiter (there were two) cooked for us. I did not ask them to cook for us, but they immediately just started cooking. I personally hate this, but some KBBQ places do it so I let it happen. Usually if someone is cooking for you it means they'll pay attention to your meat and make sure it's an amazing experience... It was not. Here's why: They did not give us time to eat/chat; they just straight up started throwing on the next meat after the previous one was (over)cooked. One waitress walked away, where I immediately started scavenging the grill to throw meat onto my plate before it overcooked. Another time, a waiter came by to cook pork belly and then walked away for 5 minutes before flipping. Pretty sure it was ready to flip the moment he walked away. Again, I was here to observe just like any other restaurant customer, so I did not want to step in for the sake of experiencing their service like everyone else. Thinly sliced brisket: This is your classic KBBQ meat. I was already extremely hesitant because the meat came out all at once and the brisket had NO marbling at all. It was all red with no fat - so I knew it would be an extremely lean cut. I wished I had taken a photo of this, but they already threw it on right when they came to my table. Pork jowl: Wow, I usually love pork jowl but it was extremely tasteless and overcooked. Even with the jalapeno brisket sauce (which was very poorly done), it was probably worse than a $20 AYCE KBBQ spot. Pork belly: Overcooked, the waiter literally disappeared. Beef belly: This is why my review has TWO stars. The manager/owner (an older fellow) came by and probably noticed the look I had when his employees were cooking. He did not speak a single word and just started throwing the beef belly on. Beef belly (photo attached) was thin like expected, but this time it tasted GOOD! I felt like I finally had a glimpse of what their food should actually taste like. Except... that ends the combo experience. Honestly, so glad that the beef belly was the closer. But considering everything I had experienced up until then, I was already just trying to pay and leave. I forgot to even comment on the poor attempt at veggies, too. Onion + asparagus, awkwardly there on the grill. $100 down the drain, truly. I cannot stress how much money I could have saved if I had just went to H-Mart and cooked everything at home. Here's my advice: Don't let your staff cook for people if they're not even going to be competent. If you have "expensive" quality meat, then don't treat it like it's not... A relatively new restaurant on the hill. It's Adjacent to Bristol farms. This hill is a hard place, the population here has a high percentage of Korean nationals , so a Korean bbq better be good to survive. 1- ambiance The ambiance here is all Class. This separates Kim's from the other local options * Gen is an all you can eat place Korean bbq down the street , but it's a dark and trendy place * Gyu-kaku (ironically adjacent to gen) is a Japanese version of the same bbq. Dark and trendy. What sets Kim's apart is that this is an upscale version of a Korean bbq. Appropriate for the hill, I'd say I was a bit surprised to see that they will actually cook your food for you at your table. I'm a bit on the fence for this , part of the fun of a Korean bbq is the self cooking nature of the event. But , I think that's part of their superior service. 2- food This is not an "all you can eat ". The usual downside of those establishment is their cuts of meat are a lower quality. These locations usually dial up the spice to cover the quality. Kim's food is top tier. The presentation is amazing. You really feel like you're getting the best of an experience here. We got the mixed combo. That's enough for two. You get a mixture of both beef and pork- which is exactly what we wanted. The sides were very good, not as spicy as I'm used to I ordered a Cass beer based on the server's recommendation. It was to totally adequate, not a watery American lager. Overall- yes, I will go again. You may balk at the initial prices , but remember - the price is feeding two people. When you do the math you find that you get a super classy experience , top notch food, for about the same price. And you dont feel like you're rubbing elbows with a bunch of twenty year old hipsters. read more

We had 3 people and were stuffed at the end. I think the combo can serve 4 as long as everyone doesn't come starving. Parking is excellent. Located in a plaza. Service was great. As someone who usually needs to drive all the way to LA for Korean BBQ, I am so relieved we have something on the hill. Not only is this closer this was so much better! We were in the area and had a sudden urge for KBBQ, so it was the perfect opporunity to try out Kim's. Got there around 7pm on Saturday and waited for about 30min, not too bad? Interior is a nice modern space and definitely looked premium. We decided to go with Mixed Combo, which came with prime brisket, pork belly, pork jowl, and either bulgolgi or prime beef belly. All the meat quality were really good actually and we actually really enjoyed the pork jowl. We went with the prime beef belly and really liked how they added black pepper, which just created this nice flavor when grilled. We also ordered the kimchi jigae and steamed egg. Kimchi jigae was very good, and steamed egg while good and fluffy, we think they forgot to add salt. Solid banchan and we actually really enjoyed them all! We did expect a premium in pricing since it was PV but man, the combos doesn't come with the stews or steamed egg and it's all add ons so the bill can rack up quite quickly if you want the usual offerings that come with KBBQ. Salad re-fill is an add on as well. Normal offerings of soju, beer, and even some wine. Service was pretty solid although can be a bit hard to flag someone down when it is busy. Overall, solid spot for KBBQ with a nice space to enjoy but do expect a more hefty bill by the end! read more
