A lot has changed at Slice since my last review. The jukebox is gone (supposedly no one was using it), the regular DJ sets have vanished (which is a good thing because most of the DJs they booked were crap), and a live jazz band has a regular spot on the first Friday of every month (some very talented students from the nearby GSU school of music--highly recommended!). Another change (and this one is a biggie) is that they FINALLY got rid of that fucking smell! For those who are unaware, one of the biggest challenges facing this place was a foul sulpher/sewer smell emanating form the basement. At first they thought it was drainage problems, then the old plumbing was the culprit. Then, they just decided to live with it. Most days it was just funky, some days it was stomach-turning. Turns out, the cause of the mystery odor had something to do with the AC unit. It was repaired a few weeks ago and the smell has been MIA ever since. There is still an interesting and diverse crowd of students, downtown regulars and tourists and the food is as reliable as ever. Now that the stench is gone, there's no reason anybody should choose dark, dank, musty-old Sidebar over clean, sleek and odor-free Slice on Poplar. read more

I went to Georgia State for school and got my degree in music. Slice is a 30 second walk from the music building so most of us music majors could be found there. Pretty convenient for college kids: pizza and booze. Nice thinking Slice. It took me a couple of times to warm up to this place. First time: sucked. Sucky salad and even more sucky service. Second time: didn't get anything but drooled over my friend's calzone. Third time: Friday afternoon lunch. Got a calzone, which was great. Their pizzas, calzones and lasagna are completely customizable, which is pretty cool, especially when you see their topping list. It's HUGE. But the service sucks. Every single time I've been, the service is super slow, even when the joint is empty. One particular time I waited 45 minutes for my food and ended up being late for one of my classes. But I really like their calzone! It's also kind of expensive though. A plain cheese calzone that comes with a salad is $9.50 and toppings cost extra. But the calzone is huge and I always have leftovers for dinner. So I guess it's worth it. Another thing, this place turns into a club or something late at night. It's usually slammed then, especially if a game just got out at the Georgia Dome. Not to mention it's pretty much the only restaurant within a 15 block radius that's open after 6. Which, in all actuality, is great when you get stuck at school late practicing for a recital that you have in 2 weeks. Not that I know from personal experience. All in all, a pretty decent place but not my favorite. read more

Despite walking around downtown quite a bit in search of interesting new lunch spots, I managed to miss this place entirely until Friday. I was headed to meet a friend at the 5 Points MARTA station after work with about 35 minutes to blow. I saw the menu and thought... hey - quick sandwich and I'm on my way - sweet! WRONG. First, the good. I really like the space. Open, trendy, but comfortable. Felt like a friendly neighborhood establishment. I also like the $2.50 PBR tall boys. Nice touch. It feels relaxed. They also have free WiFi which is pretty sweet. Food was pretty fresh and tasted pretty good. Nothing to write home about, but it was solid. I got a BLT, though, which is pretty difficult to screw up. Now for the below average. I sat at the bar for quicker service (so I thought). The bartender was nice enough, but seemed to be actively ignoring me. It was 5 minutes into my speed-dinner that I was acknowledged with an "I'll be right with you." Of course, I had to *literally* wave him down 5 minutes later after he obviously forgot about me. When he brought my salad he said he had to go get silverware. He did so and, of course, returned with no silverware. I ended up having to procure some by my own means. (He never remembered and apologized, either.) Not having long to eat, I scarfed my sandwich and asked for the check. He said 'ok' and then proceeded to ignore me again. I finally started waving my credit card around to remind him and let him know I was in a hurry. He took somebody else's order first then brought me the check. Then realized he rang it up wrong. Re-rang it up. Needless to say, I was late meeting my friend. I would go again, but mainly for a comfy happy hour - a few drinks and maybe an appetizer after work. If you're downtown and looking for Pizza, Rosa's is definitely good, but Slice is _much_ better. The food is brought to you vs. standing in line, and you've got more toppings and menu options. Slice has quite and interesting location. I wouldn't have even noticed it, however a bloke next door at 'sidebar' mentioned it. We sat at the bar. The bartender was pleasant and helpful. I think his name was jason? He gave us two free drinks and some shots! My mates ordered the 'my baby' pie. The sausage was quite tasty, but I really wish pizza parlors would have fresh pineapple! While we were at the bar, there was an intoxicated man, who turned out to be an employee! He started chatting us up and talking about music and such. When we tried to turn to ourselves to talk he pushed his way back into between our chairs! At one point he put his hand on my thigh! I understand a pub is a 'pick-up spot,' but who do you complain to when its an employee. He keep pulling at his beard while yelling instructions back into the kitchen. Then smiled back at us, claiming he was going to have to 'get rid of a couple idiots back there.' What a creepy geezer! I would go back to see the Jason the bartender, but not if I saw that manager(?) there! read more

Good pizza, stromboli and calzones. Good prices on cheap beer. Nice corner location downtown. What else do you need? 1st and 2nd stars -- the food. Pizza, stromboli, calzones, salads, pasta, appetizers. It's all good. Is it the best of the best? Probably not, but it IS hard to beat. I wouldn't put Mellow Mushroom up against the pizza. They'd lose. The stromboli is a calzone without the issue of choice. A coworker with a bit of a decision making problem took 20 minutes to try and put together ingredients for a calzone. He finally gave up and settled on the stromboli -- ham, salami, cappicola, pepperoni, and two cheeses -- all for less than the same number of ingredients in a calzone. If you want bigger and can make up your mind, the calzone with 2-3 ingredients is plenty of food for two meals if you're not in a hurry to eat. There's a lot of bread in this, though, so don't be upset when you run out of innards. Pizza -- I order by the slice -- usually with 1 ingredient. Pair it with the house salad and a Coke, and you've got a relatively filling lunch. The slices are big, and they're not made with the thin crust stuff like Mellow Mushroom. If Slice is on its game, the crust will be very buttery and have a perfect golden brown color. When I do order a pizza, I get a small pesto chicken pizza and share it with a coworker. Three (3) slices each. They're smaller than the single slices you can order, but you net about 1.5X a regular slice getting the small pizza. 3rd star -- cheap beer. Yeah -- the beer is Peroni, Blue Moon and Yeungling, but at least it's not marked up unnecessarily. I've been several times for post-work happy hours and enjoyed a pitcher of Peroni. They've also got a small but decent selection of bottled beer besides what's on tap. 4th star -- service. We've never had a bad service experience at Slice. The wait staff is prompt and, barring being busy for lunch, they're quick to get you a seat. I can't say anything bad about Slice. It's cheap, tasty and convenient to the Fairlie-Poplar district downtown. Give it a try. read more

Went here to grab a bite to eat and was pleasantly surprised with how busy they were at first. That was my only pleasant surprise, as after we tried to order an appetizer, we were informed they were out of an ingredient. Then, we tried to order an entree, and found out they were lacking another, fairly common ingredient for pizza: onions. The server was somewhat apologetic, but made no move or offer to remedy the situation, even going so far as to charge for a side of sauce. If I were a pizza place that was out of onions, and someone still age at my restaurant, I'd think a bit of sauce on the side would be a small consolation for having to shoot down not one, but two order choices. The worst part was that we only showed up a couple hours after they opened...makes me wonder what they run out of later in the evening. read more

My husband and I were here on our very first trip to Atlanta and I had purchased a groupon for this restaurant before we arrived so that we could have some dining options already planned out. We lucked out because this place was just yum! We built our own pie, which consisted of pepperoni, pineapple and green olives (don't knock it til you've tried it). The pie was baked to perfection. The crust was chewy and not hard or dry. The toppings were great and overall we were happy. I also had a Cesar salad and that was also very tasty. I think slice is pretty solid as far as I'm concerned. The prices are good (especially when they have a scoutmob), the slices are huge and I've never tried anything that I didn't like. The fact that we can order it on a late night at work or just for lunch is an added bonus. If you live, work, play in the downtown area and are looking for pizza. Came in here with a group of friends after class. It's in a sketchy part of downtown and very easy to miss if you're not looking out for it. I was surprised at how nice the interior is. They have couch seating as well as tables and a bar. I order a slice of cheese with breadsticks and my total came out to $7.02. That's not bad for a large plate of breadsticks with sauce and a huge slice of pizza. The pizza was pretty basic but tasted really good with the crushed chili flakes and Parmesan that they keep at every table. The breadsticks were amazing and served with a large amount of marinara. Our sever was also very nice and kept checking back on us. Overall a good first time experience, reasonable price, good atmosphere and great food! read more

I went on the last day of the Scoutmob deal, and clearly thought I was going to a different place...it took us FOREVER to find it.(look down the side street for Sidebar-it's right next door.) I must say, though, we were pleasantly surprised when we did! The place itself is nice...exposed brick and big screens; lots of room; great juke box. The service is friendly and efficient. The food is pretty good...really thin, good sized slices with just enough substance to handle a couple of toppings (I'm usually a virgin slice girl-just cheese); thick, tomatoey sauce and just the right amount of broiled cheese topping homestyle meatballs (chunks of garlic! Yay!) make the meatball sub just yummy. The roast beef sub was good, but nothing special; tasty but not outstanding. Slice is a cool little place, once you find it. We were looking for a place in walking distance of Georgia Aquarium and found this place on Yelp. The food was great, prices were just right, and they let us choose what we wanted on the tv (Monday night, not too many ppl in there). The baked potato pizza was awesome. Their calzones are a good portion also. Only negative I have was they allow smoking at the bar and I hate the smell of smoke especially when I'm eating. read more

I like this place. It's a great location in downtown Atlanta, on a quiet street and, as a sat at the bar, I thought "This would make a really great loft apartment." Totally random thought I know. But there's a kind of hominess to the set-up, plus it's not a big restaurant. Anyway, on to the food. I didn't have the pizza. I had a muffaletta and the house salad. I was kind of impressed by the salad, as it wasn't like the chopped iceberg/romaine mix w/ ranch dressing you get at most restaurants. It was an honest-to-god salad, a spring mix with house vinaigrette. The muffaletta was pretty good. It wasn't outstanding, but it was nice and meaty, with a tangy pesto and melty cheese. It was a solid meal. As for the drinks, I wasn't really that impressed. They offer high grav beers, but then they have a measly draught selection. What gives? The wine and spirits selection were standard for the area, though, you'll find a better, and more interesting, selection at nearby Park Bar. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from during the lunch rush hour Downtown, so I would definitely recommend Slice if you're looking to switch up where you get you pizza pies. read more

I had NO IDEA that this place was here! Around the corner from a slightly over-rated place that has a hefty layer of grease on their upper layer, I was elated to find another location to purchase a slice. The location is extremely obscure, understated and does very little to let one know that they are there. They have several daytime specials available. When I went, everyone in the place smoked, so it was a little difficult for me to breathe. The pizza was all that I enjoy - crunchy, flavorful dough with just enough chewiness in the crust. The sauce was not overpowering, there was a great cheese/meat ratio. Some of their toppings do not make sense - why do I have to pay the same amount for some basil to be on my pizza as I do for sausage? The bartender was the only person taking orders when I went and the last thing on her mind was servicing me - my food sat in the window from the kitchen for a full 4 minutes before she paid attention to see that it was ready. Of course, given the name, you can order by the slice. I decided to try out two slices: pepperoni and loaded baked potato. Honestly, the pepperoni was just average. This Slice is a little smaller and cozier than the original, which will probably prevent it from achieving the same level of ultra-hipness. But it's still a sleek atmostphere, believe you me. The food is also comparable to the pizza and sandwhiches served at the Castleberry Hill location. It's good, thin crust pizza with fresh ingrediants. There are gourmet pizza options on the menu with fancy cheeses and European sounding meats. And, as a result, everyhing is more expensive than it should be. I ventured to Slice with some co-workers on Friday. They were very busy (prime lunch time), but the host acknowledged us immediately. He asked us to sit on the couches for a couple of minutes. It was a pretty quick turnaround, and he got us seated in a nice table by the window. I may be a sucker for exposed brick, but I like this space. It's got that low-investment warehouse feel. I did find the chairs to be slightly odd and cheap looking. The light fixture was also a bit out of place given the style of the rest of the restaurant. They also had a lot of beer specials visibly displayed, but we did not partake. Work. Womp. I had the sweet pea pie (spinach, sundried tomatoes, artichoke hearts and feta cheese) and a house salad. The house salad was above average for a house salad, and I liked the esperanza dressing. The pizza wasn't my fave. It's super thin crust, and I found it a bit chewy. I really like all the components on the pizza, but it just wasn't really hitting the spot when combined. The serving size was very generous. One of my co-workers ordered the spaghetti. He reported that it was good but unexpectedly spicy. The spice averse should beware. Another co-worker had the caesar salad, but they warned her that the dressing was "oil-based" instead of the normal caesar. She seemed to feel ok about that, but I'll admit it's a little odd. She said it just didn't taste like caesar...hmmm. Bold choice. The waitstaff was attentive throughout, and they split our bill without asking. Always very nice! It was really affordable for what it was. I'm pretty sure Slice will make the lunch rotation since it's so close to my office. However, I probably wouldn't make much more of a trek for it. read more

Slice is located in downtown Atlanta where the restaurant was used as a back drop for the filming of Fast & the Furious 8. There was a nice lunch crowd for a Friday. The service was very friendly and Chico provided good recommendations on the menu. The food is phenomenal!!! We started with the Greek Salad, definitely try the homemade esperanza dressing. The pizzas are made with homemade mariana using the freshest ingredients (they don't even own a freezer). They have a full bar with an extensive wine and beer list with plenty of seating for that hometown feel. If you are staying downtown you must come here!!!! read more

Slice was the answer to my prayers. I've eaten at slice about once or twice a week this summer because it is so quick, delicious, and a good deal. The pizza slices are delicious, thin crust, and a very good size. You can order online and pick up your order at the restaurant. They're always ready with your order. The staff is very nice too. I had a nice lunch at Slice today, with two huge pepperoni slices and a coke. Pizza is very thin-crusted, so you can eat more of it than you expect. Pizza is mid-quality, not "gourmet," if that's possible, but basic and tasty. Sauce, cheese, crust and topping were all prepared well. Crust, and I'm a "crust" person, was way better than average. Service was friendly. Ambiance is "warehouse loft," though store is on street level, with huge windows that let you watch the foot traffic. You may sit outside, too. I did notice a very mild sulfuric smell in the building near the entrance when I came in but sat 30 feet away and forgot about it. Ceiling fans and air conditioning are plentiful. It didn't interfere with my appetite and I attribute this to the age and location of the building . It didn't affect my experience or this review, and I only mention it because older reviews mentioned and made me aware of it. I do intend to return and also try a salad. Take a chance. Slice is a solid downtown option for lunch or after hours fun. I usually hit the place up for lunch during weekdays and it always pleases. I really like their baked potato pizza (yeah, it's probably as bad for you as it sounds). This place also has a few beers on tap and a small collection of bottled beer. The only thing I don't like about this place is that since it's a bar and a restaurant they allow smoking inside. I really hate eating next to smokers. Come try the pizza and help support a small downtown eatery! We need more nightlife downtown in the ATL. read more

The low reviews below surprise me. I grew up in Jersey City, NJ and have had my fair share of pizza. Actually, I'm a pizza snob. This place reminds me of the kind of pizza I would find up there. As a matter of fact, smelling the pizza through the center hole brings me right back. I haven't smelt that pleasant balance of dough, cheese, and sauce since moving to Georgia. Now this is very close to New York pizza shops, with the exception of the crispy crust. But truth be told, the softer crust is very flavorful and pretty addictive. Well, I do follow the "No Crusts Left Behind" policy. I placed an order for carryout. It was a classic large cheese pie. The decor was dreadful. It felt like poorly kept college bar that served pizza, and was extremely smoky. When I was there, a large drunk fellow at the end of the bar was screaming, "Go D! Go D!" at the tv whilst watching the football game. Thus I dropped a star. The service was quick as the guy behind the bar addressed me as soon I walked up. But if you live in or around the downtown area and are searching for a great pie of pizza to take back to your room or home - you're in luck! read more

Was a little hesitant to try Slice, since most of the reviews seemed mediocre, but my boyfriend and I were starving for pizza for lunch and it was one of very few restaurants open in the area. Laura greeted us with a smile as soon as we walked in and sat us at sunny table. (she was attentive and pleasant for our entire meal.) I immediately ordered the breadsticks with marinara, which were perfect. Hot, chewy, and dusted with herbs and Parmesan. The marinara was so savory--salty and a little bit of heat. The side salad was simple and fresh -- cold mixed greens and two juicy tomato slices with a side of vinaigrette. A perfect portion for one but we shared it anyway. Not sure why others didn't like their pizza, (different strokes for different folks!) but we thought our pie DELICIOUS. We built our own, a 12-inch with buffalo mozzarella (which absolutely made the pizza), onion, mushroom and sausage on his half, pineapple on mine. My boyfriend opted for the fork method, but for me, the thin, chewy crust made it easy to roll up and eat burrito-style! The pizza was a bit messy, but that only enhanced the experience. Recommend to anyone looking for a reasonably priced, delicious pizza! Next time we're in Atlanta, we're definitely stopping at Slice! read more
