Avoid this place by all means. They trick you like you are an idiot. You'll end up paying an exaggerated amount for even routine checking. I am so surprised that such a dishonest business is still alive. If you think "I always double-check on the charges before every treatment and that can avoid surprises" -- they'll make sure you rethink what you believed. They'll bluntly deny what they have promised to you, and make you feel like you are being the dishonest one here. And the fun part is -- we were very careful to even have a chat history of what they promised. But after seeing this and finding that there is no excuse, they'll turn to blame your insurance company and ask you to call them instead. Classic move to avoid responsibilities. We originally were told that they accepted our insurance and that the visits would be covered. My wife had a cleaning and X-rays and Scheduled follow up appointments to fill some cavities. She made an appointment for me to have a tooth extracted and a bone graft. She was upset when after the first appointment the office informed her that they no longer accepted our insurance. They told her that they notified all of their patients over month ago of the coming change, but we had only been patients for around 2 weeks and where not informed at the time of the initial Booking or visit even though we provided our insurance information at the time, it seemed kind of shady at the time, but my wife didn't want to go through the hassle of getting a new dentist and new x-rays and take more time off work so she figured that we would just pay out of pocket this time. WRONG CHOICE. I wish we never got involved with Slim Dental. **This is not a complaint about the Dentil Work as it was fine although very expensive comparatively. We Had all of the work done which involved 2 appointments for me and 3 for my wife if I remember correctly including 2 cleanings. We believed we had paid our balances as they didn't take our insurance and we asked to pay our balances in full at every visit. Fast forward to this year. OVER 12 MONTHS since we had our final appointments, and we received a notice from a collection agency claiming we owe Slim Dental for nonpayment. Never did they try to call or send a bill to use as our phone numbers / email addresses have not changed and we are at the same address. They will not respond to inquiries about providing billing information and will not return our emails. The Debt collectors have provided partial info with dates but not any kind of actual missed billing information. They really only provided a glorified word document dated over a year after our appointments saying we owed them some arbitrary amount of money. It also seems from digging into reviews that I'm not the only person that has had this problem. This is also my only yelp review as I don't usually like complaining about businesses and just will not return as in the case of the original story about slim dental over a year ago since we never returned after the initial work. After moving from Philly I struggled to keep up with cleanings and couldn't find a dentist I loved. I now have some unexpected issues with wisdom teeth and am grateful to have found this office. Jackie is an amazing hygienist - super patient. She gave me a lot of info and tips on flossing - stuff I'm sure she has repeated a million times, but she showed genuine care and concern it seemed the like first time she shared the info. I've seen two dentists - Dr. Eng and Dr. Koo both very knowledgeable and phenomenal. Highly recommend. We've moved, but I will continue crossing town for this office. No bells and whistles. Yesterday I was in for a routine cleaning, and the hygienist, Shadiah Zanta, asked if I breathe through my mouth after noticing the tissues in my mouth were in poor condition, something I had not noticed. I was initially surprised by this but realized that it is a result of having taken up running last spring and that inevitably I breathe through my mouth quite a bit in this process. She took time to go through some ameliorative steps I could take, and as I was checking out at the front desk brought a sample of hydrating mouthwash for me to use at night. Further, she advised me that I should contact my insurance company to see if they will cover additional visits each year due to my diabetes, which some plans will cover, which would potentially save me money out of pocket since I go four times a year. She even made sure my next scheduled appointment was a good fit for my schedule, informing me that many schools are on break that week just in case. Don't get me wrong, Dr. Lim and Dr. Suh are still great dentists. Unfortunately in our experience they have trouble with emergency situations. I needed a double root canal on a Friday but was told I had to wait until Monday for the Root Canal Specialist. The receptionist didn't offer any options for pain relief nor did she refer me to the dentist for assistance. The root canal was expertly handled and any post-op issues were handled quickly - except for the procedure itself. The hubby cracked a tooth on a Thursday and was told that he would have to wait until Tuesday to get an appointment. Again, not a satisfactory amount of time to have to deal with great pain. No pain relief option was offered here either. He ended up at a local dentist who was able to see him the next day. We have decided that this other dentist better suits our needs, especially in an emergency. read more

This is a doctor that is so desperate to protect his reputation, instead of taking notes on how to improve his practice, that he is willing to: 1. Personally harass me over the phone and email after my initial review 2. Blame his patients and not take any accountability for poor services rendered 3. WORST OF ALL: Expose personal medical records in a public forum like Yelp as an irrelevant way to deflect blame - this is illegal by every account!! Anyway should make their own judgement as to the level of professionalism associated with such actions of a dental medical professional. IMO, this doctor is focused on sell rather than care, as evident from his actions when I requested correction of his poor dental crown work, lack of transparency with patients when selling services, and providing false information or no information at all to substantiate his claims. He is willing to make up fantastic claims, such as achieving major and wide-spread dental condition that scientifically takes months to develop, in a matter of two weeks. I am not a disgruntled patient, though his response to my earnest sharing of my experience is making the after-taste of ever dealing with him and his practice a bit bitter, and I have never sought anything from him and his practice for the resulting damage of the negligent mis-information or lack of such provided by his practice. My friend recommended me to Dr. Lim so I visited Murrayhill office. All staff is very nice and helpful. The office is very clean and cozy. I was worried about chipped old refilling and Dr. Lim explained very clearly what I need. I had to get refilling again and needed cleaning. Yani did cleaning for me and she told me how to take care of teeth in details. She recommended me to get periodontal cleaning (deep cleaning) which I needed and I did it. She quickly set up reservations for me in the same week so the process went so smooth and quick. I definitely recommend Dr. Lim and Yani! read more

I am suspicious of their billing practices. I was recently contacted of a 'remainder balance' of a small charge (about $50) even though I hadn't been there for at least 6 months. I always pay the office in full (after benefits deduction) when I leave a dental visit. I called to dispute and they say it's a remainder balance from my last visit. I check my records and I saw I paid an amount to them the full amount they asked of me on that day of service. I call back and dispute the charge again and they say it's actually a charge from the visit before that (why didn't they charge me that at either of my visits?). Anyway, I check my records again and I had paid several hundred dollars to them on that previous date of service! Ultimately, I asked for a complete bill of my records the past couple of years and it was still not clear where this remainder $50 charge was coming from. I was surprised they did not remove this charge from my account even after complaining to them and giving them evidence of payment and reviewing my bill history. I will re-consider going to them next time I need dental service. I had been to them a bunch of times before, so I'm surprised they were so unrelenting in terms of reversing/cancelling this small charge. read more

I saw Shadiah Zanta at Slim Dental today for a deep cleaning, (scaling and root planning). Wow, she was extremely thorough. She listens and really explains everything so that you can understand what your issues are and how to avoid them in the future. You can feel the passion she has for what she does, and she took her time and made the experience comfortable even though I had to get anesthesia. She even went over how to floss and watched me do it, turns out I'm 31 and I didn't know how to do it properly! (C shape to get both sides). They always ask you, do you floss, but not do you know how to. When you have crowding, like I do, its really important in order to maintain healthy gums. I'm looking forward to go back to get the other side done, which is crazy because I hate the dentist! Before I left, she wrote down a list of recommendations for me so I don't forget anything. I've never been this impressed with a dental hygienist. The office staff was also great, there was no wait time on both occasions I have gone, they start working on you right at your appointment time. As someone who has a genuine fear of dentist office, I am so excited that I've find this place! I'm in the process of getting my ceramic veneer replaced, and so far, the experience has been great! Dr. Koo is very professional and kind about answering my endless questions! All the admin. staffs and assistants are attentive as well. So far my favorite thing about Dr. Koo is that getting local anesthesia is not painful at all when she does it. I've had to get shots on my gum so other procedures at different offices, and the shot itself is the most terrifying and painful part (even with the numbing cream), but Dr. Koo does some magic that makes it so I feel NOTHING. GREAT DENTISTS -- SHADY BILLING I used to really like this place, the dentists were knowledge and did a great job but the office's shady billing practices have put me off and sadly I won't be coming back. Last November I went in for non-routine dental work and paid for the everything up front because the receptions assured me that any amount overpaid would be refunded to me after insurance coverage is cleared. Fast forward to this July, I decided to request the invoice from last year's visit for my records and on it I noticed a credit from the visit that should have been refunded to me but never was. Most surprising on the invoice was a charge for the exact amount of the credit billed this year on the day I requested the invoice. Suspicious. I contacted their office and was given the explanation that they "forgot" to charge me for a service last year that just so happens to cost the exact amount they owed me. Really? What I really think happened is they added a BS fee so they wouldn't have to give me any money back and thought I would never notice the difference. Well, I noticed and now they are probably want to hide the fact that they fucked up. The worst part is I never even received one apology. All I really wanted was transparency of the shady situation and what I received was attitude. ** If you decide to go to this place make sure you get an Invoice and Receipt and pay AFTER your insurance is billed to avoid shady billing practices.** read more

Man, I never thought I'd say this but I love this dental practice. I love them! I wear a mouthguard at night because I grind my teeth like crazy. And those things are kind of expensive, and so of course I had one made (at Dr. Lim's suggestion) and then after about two weeks of nightly use, my dog ate it. No, he really ate it. It was toast. But I'd saved the molds of my mouth, so they cut me a huge break on the price of a replacement. That was really cool of them. Anyway, after the baby was born, I went in for X-rays and a cleaning and exam. I have to take Saturday appointments now, so Dr. Kim is my new dentist. And she found that I had a small hole in this old filling I had done a few years ago at a sketchy, scary chop shop dental office in Beverly Hills. Now, let's get one thing straight--thanks to a traumatic childhood experience, I am terrified of dental work. Petrified. Horrified. I hate the sounds, smells, sights, you name it. But I also know that when it comes to your teeth, prevention is everything. If you have a problem and you put it off, before you know it you'll be wearing mail-order dentures and gumming soft food and remembering wistfully what it was like to eat a fresh, crisp apple. So I made the appointment and couldn't stop thinking about it and I avoided sugary foods for the two weeks between my cleaning and the filling repair because I was so scared of causing enough decay to necessitate a root canal, a procedure I have never experienced but is often used as a watermark of horrible experiences, as in, "I'd rather have a root canal than go on another date with that guy." The appointment day came and I got on the F and was kind of a nervous wreck the whole ride over from Brooklyn. Sat back in the chair and decided quickly, with encouragement from Dr. Kim, that it would be a good idea to put headphones on and listen to Pelican at full volume. And there was drilling and and there was water and there were scary sounds and a little pressure and then it was over in about 20 minutes and I realized two things: 1.) Modern dentistry is AWESOME. Lasers and water and painless needles and topical numbing gel and even the drill was quieter than I expected. Imagine having that done with a foot-pedaled drill like our grandparents did? Shudder. 2.) Dr. Kim is a really great dentist. Like Dr. Lim, she is gentle and knowledgeable and puts up with my ridiculous phobias with a lot of grace. Did I mention that I love this dental practice? The prices were totally fair but even if they hadn't been, I'd go back in a second. I cannot recommend these wonderful dentists and their lovely staff highly enough. No matter which doctor you see, you won't be disappointed. And I say this as a person who would sooner have a root canal than...well, you get the idea. read more

Had a stain removal and my teeth were worse after I walked out than before. A tool was used that effectively put a small gap in the front of my teeth. This is the second incident I've had here. The first was after I got some cavities filled and continually felt like the bite on one side of my back molars was slightly higher than the other side, over time my teeth shifted because of the bite situation. Definitely would not recommend- especially after the space has been inserted between my two front teeth that I have to now go to another dentist to fix with Invisalign. Not amused. Update: Dr Lim reached out to me after this review, which I appreciated, and which is a testament to an establishment that cares about the experience of its customers. He has a great bedside manner and I have always had a good experience with him- he is not the specific Dentist who caused the issues aforementioned. First of all, thanks yelpers! I wouldn't have found this office if it wasn't for you. The reviews on here made me pretty confident they wouldn't rip me off with unneeded dental work (one of my biggest fears about dentists). Now, on to the review. Since I've moved to the city, I've been wary (see also: lazy) about deciding on a new dentist. I mean, picking a new gynecologist was hard enough, but I just couldn't put off a cleaning any longer. I searched around for someplace reputable and close to my workplace and I found Dr. Lim's office. Even before the visit, the receptionists were helpful and very easy to talk to. I had made an appointment for Saturday, which kind of wasn't ideal, since I wouldn't have to be at work that day, so I wouldn't be close to Dr. Lim's office. They kept me on watch for cancellations though, and were able to fit me in several days sooner, on a Monday. When I got there, everyone was very nice, and the office and equipment looked very clean/new. I met Dr. Lim before the dental hygienist started the cleaning, and I found him very personable. As far as who had referred me, I had written "yelp.com" on my paperwork, so we talked a little bit about that. He's happy to have so many positive reviews! Anyway, the cleaning went well. No cavities. They seem to have a lot of cutting edge equipment there... For example, Dr. Lim had this little laser thing that detects cavities. It gave off a sound like a hand-held metal detector. Weeeird... but cool! Anyway, I had a great visit (as good as a dentist's visit can be, I guess), and I recommend them to everyone! read more

How much do I love Slim Dental? This practice makes me rethink my other 5 star reviews, or wish for a 6th star, because they're that wonderful. Once upon a time I had a stellar dentist, then had to switch jobs/insurance & had a terrible experience with someone else. I switched to my company's "high" insurance plan - & I found Slim Dental. That was about 8 years ago & I haven't looked back. I've never seen Dr. Lim himself but all other dentists I've seen here have been incredibly competent, clear & friendly, as are the hygienists & office staff. The facilities are new & sparkling clean. They have Saturday hours. They have reminders by text/email. Heck they even send you a little greeting on your birthday. Anytime anyone at my office asks for a dentist recommendation on our miscellaneous email board, I send them here. I hope they're around forever! read more

I found Dr. Stephen Lim and Associates by searching online. He had 90 reviews on Dr Oogle. I love his office! Located in midtown, it's easy for me to get to from work. Julie and the other members of his staff are very friendly and helpful. The office is very tech-savy - flat panel TVs on the walls and tiny cameras to take and display pictures of your teeth instantly. I don't know much about pricing, but I do know that his office accepts most insurances. My provider is MetLife. My first visit was to replace a filling and address the sensitivity of my teeth, which popped up every now and then but was really bad a week straight. Dr. Stephen Lim was the first dentist to accurate diagnose the problem. Others had told me that I was brushing my teeth too hard, causing the gums to recede. After examining my teeth and bite, he told me I must grind my teeth at night based on the wear of my teeth. I had braces, so my teeth are straight; however, my bite does not match up perfectly so I can move bottom jaw side to side even when I bite down. This friction was wearing down my enamel and putting pressure on my gums, causing the sensitivity. He recommend a night guard, which was a bit costly for someone who just moved to New York after graduating from college, but it was the best money I'd ever spent because I haven't had a problem since. Dr. Park is great as well. She examined a chipped tooth and did a bond in what felt like 5 minutes. I stepped in the office, had my tooth fixed, and walked out in less than 50 minutes. I prefer still Dr. Lim though because he's more thorough in his explainations which is helpful to someone as crazy about teeth and oral hygiene as I am. He doesn't do cleaning, but his associates are great. I feel bad for not remembering her name, but I've had my teeth cleaned twice and both times it felt amazing, a good deep clean. I have gotten cleanings regularly my entire life, and Dr. Stephen Lim's office is the best. The longest I've ever waited was 30 minutes, but it was a bad day for them. Upon my first visit to Dr. Lim I was quite impressed (awesomely modern office, flat-screen TVs, informative and polite staff). Other reviewers who talk about how descriptive Dr. Lim and his assitants are about telling you what it is they are doing inside your mouth and why they are doing it...they're right. I felt like I was listening to a play-by-play about my mouth! My second visit was to remove/replace an old filling that had started to decay. When I had this filling done the first time, it was quite painful and never allowed me to be completely pain-free in the tooth since. So, I was naturally apprehensive about having it messed with again. However, the procedure that Dr. Lim performed himself took 20 minutes and was completely pain free. I was shocked, and then two days later the tooth felt like new. Dr. Lim did a great job. The only reason I am not giving him 5 stars is because I've felt rushed through my visit each time. Not in the procedure by any means, but in the greeting, initial cleaning, and afterwards. Sort of like "Hi I'm Dr. Lim here is your new filling, goodbye." Maybe I'm being picky, but I felt more like a cow being moved through the warehouse than a real patient at times. But, as I said, the actual dental work has been great and exceeded my expectations. read more

Having had so much previous dental work done, I was very attached to my old dentist back where my parents live, but after my dad's dental insurance changed, I had to find a new dentist in Manhattan. My first visit to the office was for a root canal, and I thought I was only going in for a preliminary meeting to discuss and look at it. The endodontist Dr. Han dove right in though and without pain, I was finished in less than an hour (mind you, this was on a molar)! With prescriptions for Vicodin and antibiotics in hand, I was off on my merry way. I had some mild pain immediately after, but that wore off by night. Getting the post and the crown were also surprisingly fast. The office utilizes a lot of new technology. Dr. Lim uses laser drills, which are so quick and pain-free that you don't even need Novocain. The x-rays are also done digitally, so you don't have to sit there waiting for them to process them by hand. I hear he does great cosmetic procedures as well. I had a monroe piercing, and the hole never fully closed after I took it out, but he says he can use a laser to re-open the hole so it can close. Anyway, I highly endorse Dr. Lim's office. Even the wait was bearable (thanks to the Today Show and Martha Stewart). read more

When I was 17, I cracked both of my front teeth a month before my senior prom. I foolishly ran to a local dentist, not knowing whether he was qualified or not. Needless to say, my hastiness led to years of red, inflamed gums and bad breath! At the recommendation of a friend, I visited Dr. Lim. He was friendly and professional. Although the procedure to fix the shoddy work that my prior dentist did took longer than expected, Dr. Lim explained everything to me in detail and was honest about what the complications could be. I appreciated the fact that he was more interested in getting it right than getting it done quickly. Many dentists do a "cover-up" that simply masks the problem, allowing them to rake in more money when the ailment worsens and patients have to re-visit. For reasons I don't want to get into, the last time I'd been to a dentist before Dr. Lim had been about a decade ago. It's the kind of anxiety that builds and builds, sort of like plaque. Eventually I just couldn't put it off anymore. My severely impacted wisdom teeth were insisting with increasing pressure, so I took myself and the inside of my mouth looking like an old piano to the then (2006)-relatively new Dr. Lim. The week of my appointment, one of those aforementioned wisdom teeth, growing in at a nearly 90-degree angle, caused a canker sore that grew and grew until I became concerned it'd eat a hole through my face. When I ate lunch that day, I wept from the pain and concern of what I'd become. So in this somewhat touchy psychological context, I meet Dr. Lim and, I don't know, his personality is like the human equivalent of a teddy bear. If the exam chair were shaped for it, he'd be kneeling by my side and I'd be 5 again, and he'd be saying that things would be all right. Anyway, he examines my teeth and says, "This is actually not so bad." But he acknowledges the sore with an appropriate hiss and then proceeds to fire a laser gun in my mouth to cauterize that whole mess and the pain is gone and I'm all joy and relief and shock and I run my tongue across my smooth teeth and I'm slapping myself and shouting, Don't cry! Ive been going to Slim Dental for the passed year and a half and I'm pretty happy with them. They were recommended to me by my boyfriend. I've had my cleanings done with them and also a filling, I've only had good experiences so far. :) They are great with following up on appointments and sending reminders for upcoming ones so that helps me a lot and keeps me at ease knowing I won't have to worry about forgetting :) The hygienists I've had have been great and also the Dentists. So, I complain about dentists because I feel like it's a scam: you NEVER here a dentist say that you have no cavities. And then Dr. Lim proved me wrong! I had 3 cavities, one which even needed a root canal. Still, the visit was very pleasant, except for the visual I got of half my tooth gone (said root canal) on the monitor. I have to go back for my crown, and will give you an update. I am only giving 4 stars, because you do have to be a bit careful with the bill: make sure you are getting charged your insurance companies negotiated rate for the service, and make sure you follow the insurance companies rules (I have to go on one day for the "build up" and another day to get the crown, or else it is not covered). Update: So, that initial review was almost exactly a year ago. (Yes, I write reviews in e-mail and then save it until I have several to post. This one slipped through the cracks). So, I went back in June and got the crown. It was as pleasant as a dentist visit could possibly be. The first few days there was some pain when I bit down- I went back and Dr. Lim shaped it- apparently it was slightly too high and caused too much pressure. It's been about 6 months now- and it would take me a while to even tell you which tooth has a crown: it is completely innocuous and I can hardly feel it at all! I went back 2 weeks ago for my regular checkup, and I am happy to report that I am a one with no cavities right now! (Tip: use ACT or other fluoride mouthwash- especially for those with a sweet tooth like me!) read more

Seriously keep away from this place. Went there 3 months ago and i got root canal. Then it started to hurt 2 months later. I went there and couldn't find my doctor. The other dentist checked it and told me that my previous doctor couldn't clean it well. It doesn't surprise me because all operation took 45 mins in 1 session. I havent seen anybody who got root canal in 1 session. Who ever I asked told me that it took at least 2 sessions. Any way after all, they didnt offer me free cleaning and i have to pay $2K more for re-treatment. Seriously keep away from this thiefs. If you dont have money to throw away. read more

This place should be the model of all dentist offices! Nice, modern equipment -- flatscreen TVs in every room hooked up to Apple TV, very modern xray machine, cameras to swivel around your mouth and watch on the tv, nice comfy chairs, etc. My doctor is Dr. Cho, and he's been very quick yet precise, gentle, and always explains everything to you step by step. A trip to the dentist is never a joy, and can be painful sometimes, but Dr. Cho makes me feel more relaxed and informed of what's going on. Only (slight) annoyance I have is that once he's done with the work, he barely gives you a proper goodbye, and quickly goes off to another patient -- but this is understandable as the office is busy and he tries to be time efficient. I'd certainly recommend this practice to anyone read more

What a place! I've been coming to Slim Dental for 12 + years and i've never been disappointed with the service. All the staff are very accommodating to your needs. This place is fantastic, and I never thought I'd be saying that about a dentist. After reading all the good reviews, I kind of figured it was too good to be true. But, turns out everyone's right -- this place deserves the recognition. I went in because I had been having some pain and I was able to get in the very next day with Dr. Kim. Turns out I didn't have any cavities. My wisdom tooth was just coming in and causing pain. I completely expected them to recommend at LEAST one filling...isn't that what most dentists do? Nope. They even did my cleaning while I was there, which was totally pain free. They're honest, friendly, professional, smart. Left nothing to be desired. read more

I have been going to Slim dental for numerous years! (I miss you Dr. Suh!) I had my appointment with Dr. Koo, she is so gentle and sweet! Today, when I had my deep cleaning, I had Dr. Eng, who was also very patient and very nice! The ladies who work at reception are wonderful and the dental hygienists are professional and personable! My experience with this dental office was rather BAD. I was seen by Dr Park. My appointment was rushed. She did 2 fillings in one hour, one end up with overhung and problem with my retainer. I went back twice to have things readjusted. She seems rushy. I start to have TMJ symptoms ever since my second visit. At last she had to redo the filling because she could not remove the overhung and my bite was far off. My bite is still off after she redid everything. And I am now seeing a TMJ specialits!!!!! read more

After my previous dentist performed a shoddy bonding job and exhibited poor bedside manner (resulting in the unnecessary and unexpected removal of a part of my canine tooth), I wasn't going to take any chances on my next dentist. I did my research and Dr. Stephen Lim's office stood out above all the others. My first experience was a check-up and cleaning with Dr. Kim. She was very patient and carefully went over all my dental information with me, using photographs of my teeth taken with an intra-oral camera to illustrate. As a visual person, this was immensely helpful in aiding my understanding! She assured me that the bonding job on one of my front teeth can definitely be fixed, and I made an appointment to have it completed. Because of scheduling conflicts, I made an appointment with Dr. Lim instead. I told him that I was nervous because the same procedure had been botched twice by my aforementioned previous dentist, and he did his best to assure me and let me know everything that was going on. When the bonding was completed, the front of the tooth looked completely natural and I couldn't even tell there had been work done! Everyone I've shown it to has said the same. There was some roughness on the back of the tooth, and Dr. Lim was happy to polish it down for me. He also informed me that if I found any problems with the bonding, I can go back and get it fixed for free. But so far, so good! Overall, Dr. Lim was very considerate and I could tell that he derives a lot of personal accomplishment from his handiwork. I would recommend him to all my friends.
