I really appreciate history and Americana culture but I also understand the pitfalls of nostalgia and I understand that the times we remember them weren't always better. For example it's easy to forget when you look at an Edward Hopper painting of a diner scene, how crappy that diner food probably was or how terrible the coffee was compared to your average modern coffee shop in a time when even 7/11 sells what would have been considered "gourmet" coffee thirty years ago. So with this in mind I can say that Slo-Jacks is like a window into the past with all the rundownness of an old Americana Dream that must have been ahead of it's time back in the day. Slo's menu is a mix of classic American fast food with some old California flair. From fried chicken to burritos everything is made with love (and oil too) to order. It costs a little more than other fast food joints because it's a better and more substantial. Many items are deep fried and greasy at that but they are all done well. This is probably the best fried chicken anywhere around. There is a really old worn down but super charming mini golf course in the back that will remind you that the fun in mini golf has nothing to do with how new or extravagant the course is. I understand during a pandemic and have no problem waiting for an order, but after waiting and getting home and eating it & getting extremely sick off of the food. In an age of chains and franchises , Slo Jacks is a throw back, now there are complaints that prices arent what they used to be but what is and it is privately owned and uses high quality beef as opposed to the arches down the street . 3.5-4. I was working in there area and decided to stop in here for lunch. Very similar to All American in Massapequa. Got a double cheeseburger, onion rings, and a chocolate shake. The food is good here, but a lot more expensive for fast food compared to All American. The shake was thick, onion rings were hot and crispy and a good fast food double cheeseburger. What I ordered came over $10. Not a bad spot for lunch or dinner and they have other options besides just burger and fries. read more

I wish I could give zero stars. I went there with 4 friends, and the owner/manager? started screaming at me the second I stepped on the property screaming he was closed. Screaming like I was walking into a fire or something, saying he was closed. I said ok, then turned around to tell my friends who were a little behind me. He yelled at me to get off of the property, and he wouldn't "serve my kind". I asked him what he was talking about, and he said I was to drunk to be there. Now keep in mind 1. I JUST stepped into the parking area, and 2. I had nothing to drink all day, and I wasn't part of the drinking crowd. I told him I wasn't drinking, I parked next door to eat something but they weren't serving food and he just told me to get the F out, he didn't want to deal with this S. WHAT IS GOING ON????? So we just left. I don't know if HE was drunk or just pissed at something, but he was really yelling his head off at us for standing on the edge of the parking lot while we decided what to do. Roadside shanty serving up greasy, fried everything! Burgers, fries, nachos, jalapeno poppers, shakes and soft serve, all found here. For what it is, it's good. For example, the poppers have a good amount of cheese inside rather than being mostly fried shell and jalapeno. Order on the way back from the beach and eat in your car or at one of the few picnic tables set up to the side. If fast food is your thing, this is more authentic and interesting than stopping by McDonald's. Food for the teenage boy fried and served up by their peers. Very cool idea and nice atmosphere. Menu is written on a surfboard which fits nicely. Only went once ordered the ultimate nachos i believe it was called. Very unimpressed. The lettuce was fresh at least but to pay just under $8 was not much of a value at all. However there are many items on the menu considering the small size and drive in type style so yes I would go back and try other things definitely. They had burgers and I would like to try some of their smoothies. Next time I'm in the area I'll stop by and try something else. read more

Ok so this place is really good if you're not expecting much. It's definitely a hole in the wall and a bit pricey for what it is but overall great and a cute, cheap place for date night. I was craving a fried shrimp basket so we stopped in here. My boyfriend is really picky about his seafood but he tried the fried seafood basket which comes with clam strips, shrimp, scallops and fries. He loved it. I also enjoyed my shrimp and fries. All seafood platters come with a spicy cocktail sauce, tartar sauce and cole slaw. The sauces seemed homemade and the slaw was surprisingly decadent. Girls behind the counter were attentive, helpful and sweet. Outdoor seating only or take it to go. 27$ for the both of us, not including drinks or ice cream after. We probably could have gone to Out of the Blue down the road or Buoy One in Riverhead for better quality seafood at the same price, but this place is timeless and worth a trip. The highlight of the evening was mini golf after dinner! They have a decently sized mini golf facility behind the restaurant. Back in the day it was probably a really popular place however now it's a bit run down. The owner would make a killing if he fixed it up...but still a great time! I would give this place 0 stars if I could. We came here since the kitchen for CJ's bar was closed next door. We left our car at CJ's since we planned on bringing food back to the bar. There were several workers standing outside and the place was empty. As we approached, they said there was a gas leak and that the place was closed. When we hesitated, they said nastily, "Go back to Boardy Barn". When we explained that we didn't go into Boardy Barn because of the lines, they said, "We're not going to deal with you." Deal with what? We were not acting inappropriate in any way. We were also completely sober! Meanwhile Cj's next door was packed with people who decided not to go to Boardy Barn. Chili, thats what is good here. I sometimes make a trip to get the chili at slows. Its made exactly how I like it with thick tomatos and its hot but not too hot. They put ground beef in it too. Excellent chili. read more
