Review update: 06/19/2016 Slo Donut Co. is an awesome place to grab a donut! Open 24/7, they have a variety of old classics as well as some "gourmet" type donuts. My favorite is the chocolate pillow! A large bar filled with chocolate, you can never go wrong with. They raise the price of these to $3 (they used to be $2.20 =[ ). The majority of donuts are ~$1.00 per donut which is good too. My other favorite is the glazed buttermilk donuts. My wife and I decided to go check out slo do co on donut day and we got donuts and a coffee. The iced coffee was only $1.00 in honor of donut day, but the donuts regular priced. All proceeds I believe went to Salvation Army. The donuts I ordered were nice a fresh and warm! That's always a plus in my book. A hot donut is wayyyy better than a cold one. In the words of Jase Robertson "I can only eat about 6 cold donuts, but I can eat 20 hot donuts". They've also expanded the shop, which is awesome! Although, when I went there, there was a heavy metal band playing inside which was kinda weird since it's usually a place where students go to study. It was so loud I just pointed to the donuts I wanted and made no verbal communication to the staff. It obviously didn't take away from the quality of the donuts (which is why I still have SLO do co at 4*), but I don't know if it's the right place for heavy metal bands playing extremely loud. SLO do co is a staple in San Luis obispo! My boyfriend goes to cal poly so I like to come here when I visit. It's a 24hr donut shop, but they also sell other pastries, coffee and Thai tea there. A lot of cal poly students come here to study since its 24hrs and they have free wifi. Their donuts are so good. So far I've only tried their maple bacon bar and they chocolate cream filled donut. Both were really good and really sweet. Their treasure here though is their cream puffs. They're so delicious! It's pretty much a donut hole with cream puff cream inside of it. It's heavenly if you take it home and freeze it first. All of it goes great with milk. They also surprisingly sell Thai tea here. You wouldn't think of a donut shop selling it but they do and it's actually good. It doesn't taste too sweet and it actually tastes authentic. Everything here is fairly priced as well. Including their donuts and drinks. What does suck about this place is they run out of different stuff a lot. Usually they run out of the cream puffs by the middle of the day. This place knocked my socks off. After our late anniversary dinner my boyfriend and I wanted dessert, so he took me here so I could try some of the epic donuts he was telling me about. SLO Donut Co. has some real unique flavors like azuki bean, peanut butter and jelly, maple bacon, and pumpkin cheesecake, to name just a few. We walked out with a maple bacon bar and a peanut butter and jelly donut; the maple bar tasted just as I expected, like when you're having bacon with pancakes and the syrup gets on your bacon and you eat it as it is. I was expecting the bacon flavor to be more pronounced but I'm glad it wasn't - it had a perfect balance of sweet and salty. The peanut butter and jelly was awesome, and the donut was stuffed full. Both donuts are super soft and moist, which makes them even more heavenly. It was only like three bucks and some change for the two donuts, too. Great place, I wish so much there was something like SLO Donut Co. here in the Bay Area. Maybe it's good for my waistband that there isn't. read more

Discovered this donut shop on Instagram and had to stop. Originally from he Central Coast and now live in the Bay Area and recently made a trip down to the CC and this was on my list of places to stop at. The customer service is great, the people are friendly and the atmosphere is fantastic. The donuts are super yummy and fell in love with the peach cobbler. The only downfall is that the donuts with cereal on them, the cereal was stale. I also think it's a tad pricey for donuts but I guess these are considered gourmet donuts so the price is somewhat justified. We will be back to this place on our road trip next week when we pass through. He vegan donuts were also very tasty and moist and I'm not even vegan. Bougie donuts done well. The variety and uniqueness of flavors and the captivating presentation blew me away despite already having high expectations. The lavender donut was the bomb.com, but most of the other donuts were still exceptional. The circus animal and s'mores pop tart were very sweet but perfect for those with sweet tooths. The "donut design center" was a major highlight;you could personalize any donut to make it even more spectacular, like adding caramel sauce or peanut butter chips to your liking. I went at around 2pm on Monday and there was nearly no wait time and plenty of donuts still. The building is quite spacious with more tables than the average donut shop. It also had an environment peaceful enough for working. The only disappointments from my experience were the Nutella filled donut holes and the cream-filled cronut. They weren't terrible but nothing better than your average donut shop (but more expensive). read more

Stopped here before heading home to SF after a stay in SLO. My husband loves anything sweet so I thought it would be nice to stop by and grab a few items and coffee for the road. Lots of unique donuts, similar to Krispy Kreme donuts (don't hate me!). I don't have a sweet tooth but I appreciate the variety and occasional sweet treat. We had the cream puffs, glazed with an Oreo cookie on top, and the mint chocolate chip Angel food cake donuts. Fresh, soft and moist. Would definitely be back if in the area. read more

This review is more towards the staff than the donuts, despite the donuts leaving a lot to be desired. I entered the store this morning with my gf and 2 year old son, and another gentleman behind us. The ladies behind the counter were quick to tell us there was a limited number of customers allowed at one time. They then rudely suggested us to look around and count, and we counted more than six people we'd need to wait outside. The gentleman quietly exited. Then one of the employees condescendingly prompted my gf to count for herself. She asked if our 2 year old counted as a 1 of the 6. They then turned to another customer and began laughing and making a joke of it, saying, "apparently her kid doesn't count as a person? I guess people learn something new every day!" She exited and waited in the car. I then stood quietly in a yellow taped box listening them mock her. Even more frustrating was watching the employee wearing a tank top and her arm pits fully exposed reach in and out of the glass doors behind her rubbing her armpit all over the shelves and over the donuts as she was too short to reach them. While waiting another employee came out into the lobby then behind the counter, but since he works there he's body and respiratory system doesn't count? If you plan on getting a donut with your kids and are a single parent or just a family who wants to get donuts together, I suggest you go else where, as the staff is rude, unable to manage the current environment with manners and the donuts are blah at best. read more

We used to like slodoco but something has changed. My wife got a couple (expensive) chocolate croissants and you can see in the pictures I uploaded that quality control is lax now. The crust is doughy, not light and flaky like they should be. We might try Albertsons next door instead or run by Fresssh Donuts near us on Broad. The chocolate filling was ok but it is like bread that is not fully cooked. It was crispy outside like they had temp too high and thought it was cooked all the way through. We have been disappointed several times now so we give up. It's not worth trying any more. One last note about service. Not only was the girl slow with customers, add chatting with her friends and letting a line of customers wait, don't stop if you are in a rush. Also, I notice a lot of students are posting how awesome slodoco is. It is nice to have such a loyal customer base that are willing to give glowing reviews. I can't even deal with how amazing this place is. My husband and I go to SLO on vacations all the time and we never thought to visit here (even though we are donut crazy). We went here on our last visit and were blown away. I got a lavender raised & mint chip raised. I wish I had gotten two or three lavender! I love lavender, so any pastry or drink - I'm all over it. Yum yum and yum! I was SO excited to be in town to give this place a try! I follow them on IG and I was hoping the donuts tasted as pretty as they look! I loved the ambiance and it was a good size place! A lot of people were hanging out and doing work on their lap tops and it was a super relaxed environment. They have coffee cups on the wall for their "regulars" which I loved! They have a huge variety of donuts with all flavors, colors and craziness! I love the fact they have gluten free options as well! Honestly, I'm not a big dessert guy. And in light of the Kavanaugh hearing I will try to be very impartial and not let my 1% body fat physique sway this review. When you walk into slodoco it feels like you just pondered into the "Somebody that I used to know" music video. As the back wall of donuts magnetizes your eyes with its' beautfiul colors, you feel a warm rush through your soul. Almost as if your mom had just tucked you in for bed and as she was leaving she announced french toast and bacon is for breakfast. My nose hair follicles became so strong from the explosive aroma throughout the room. As I order my buttermilk glaze and my maple bar I give the coachella looking cashier my card without hesitation. My experience has been flawless, and on my way out I glance over at a group of gorgous drunk women and they wave to me. It's no secret that everyone compares Sunshine and SLODoCo all the time. If you like basic donuts, Sunshine's are way better. If you like the fancy, designer, filling kind of donuts, you're better off stopping by SLODoCo. However, SLODoCo also has more customers so there's a higher turnover rate of donuts. If you walk in at any given moment, both donut shops have issues. 01. Sunshine has a lower turnover rate, so the donuts you get might be cold and not super fresh. 02. SLODoCo, because they're so much more frequented, will probably just be out of donuts and you'll get last pickings. My favorites here are the buttermilk and crumb donuts. My friends love the donut holes and Nutella donuts but they're a bit too much for me. People always rave over the maple bacon donut and I have to say it's not that great. After 1 bite, I'm done. If i take any more, I will probably gag and throw up. The Thai Tea here is also very dependent on who makes it. Sometimes it's good. Sometimes you paid for red water. Feel free to stay forever and study without buying anything for awhile. They don't really care. There's also a $5 card minimum. read more

I love the fact that they had specialty donuts here. I've been here like 3 times each time I visit and I have to grab there maple bacon donut every time. Mmmmm I love bacon and bacon with donuts is even more awesome. The donut is kind of salty and sweet a perfect mix. They have a lot of interesting donuts here like peanut butter and jelly, cereal donut, and etc. Which I haven't tried yet but maybe next time. I hate donuts, but goodness I love this place. I wasn't able to write a review while I was there because of the rush to get back to the Bay, but wow are these donuts made with love. Not only is the ambiance of the place cool and mellow - great for work or studying - the employees are incredibly chill and easy to converse with. As it was my first time there, I wasn't sure what I wanted to get. So naturally, I asked a million questions - which many of the people behind the cases, filled with joy, answered energetically. I ended up with a vegan vanilla coconut, which had real coconut chips on top, and the Lucky Charms donut. It was hard to decide between that and the Circus Animal Cookie - because wow is that a childhood throwback standoff - but I couldn't say no to the amount of Lucky Charms marshmallows that kissed the top of that donut. From LA to SLO (3+ hour drive) As soon as I walked in I was in awe. They have a huge selection. It took me a while to decide which donuts I wanted to bring back home. Of course I immediately went for the circus animal and the lavender donut. Before I knew it I had a dozen picked out. Looks: The mermaid tale was too cute. The galaxy donut looked just as beautiful. Taste: The s'mores donut was amazing! But I must say my favorite one was the circus animal. I'm a big fan of Thai tea unfortunately the Thai tea donut didn't taste anything like I'd imagine. I remember when people started going nuts over Krispy Kreme moving in from the East Coast--hundreds of people in line, waiting for those donuts to...[sigh]...roll off the conveyor belt. If there was one good thing I could say about them, it was that they were incredibly light...which is great, if all you like is an airy doughnut and a few varieties. This place not only has donuts that rival Krispy Kreme's lightness, but they've got everything else as well--solid apple fritters, generous bars, you name it. On top of that, they're not satisfied with just a rotation of the same donuts--they really push the envelope with what can be done; it's as if Willy Wonka just said "to Hell with Chocolate!" and moved here. I've been to the shop about six times since I moved to SLO about 4 months ago, and there has been at least two completely new donuts every time I've stepped in. The first doughnut I tried is still my favorite--it had some sort of creme brulee theme. As I bit into it, I was surprised to find that the glaze on top wasn't just your typical shiny donut glaze--they'd actually taken the time to torch it so it cracked, just like the dessert. Not only that, but it was perfectly executed--just a perfect, transparent, caramelized window crackling over the dough. The creme was fantastic as well--spot on for flavor. Today I just had the best creme puffs I've ever had. Maybe I've been spending too much time in casino buffets, but these were a revelation. So yeah, this place is worthy of a stop. I've barely scratched the surface--today I saw some sort of 'Reese's explosion' doughnut, which looked pretty good except I was buying for my parents (not peanut butter fans like myself). I don't know if I could ever afford to make this a daily routine as a student...but as a graduate... Which brings me to my one caveat: this place should probably be thought of as a 'gourmet' doughnut shop; the prices are a bit higher than I've experienced in other parts of the state, but they're by no means the most ridiculous. Their specialty donuts run about $3 each; there are discounts for people that buy a dozen I believe. Delicious in every way... I have delighted in their doughnuts at least 3-4 times over the past 2 years. They have a great variety of traditional, unique, and gluten free doughnuts... and now they have a delivery van! Just to mention a few of the unique flavors and colors.... There is the Marshmallow Galaxy Doughnut, Maple Buttermilk with bacon, the cereal doughnut, mint chip doughnut, espresso cream, the peanut butter pillow... And the list goes on =) You can also order your own "Designer Doughnuts" ahead of time. I gave 4 stars instead of 5 for a few reasons... They do run out of some doughnut inventory throughout the day.... Sometimes they're out of a cold bottle of milk. In the past, the front counter workers don't seem to be very happy, and sometimes aren't always helpful... They have a great Logo/Brand and inviting store front. Drove 3 hours for this. (Jk) But I did drive from NorCal to Slo in the middle of the night and this was the first place i went to. :) The donut shop is super cute and chill. Perfect for hang outs. The workers are friendly. They totally messed with me by telling my friend to hide from me while I went back to the car. I had no idea what was going on for the first 5 minutes. AHA Anyways, I got their nutella donut. It was the size of a poptart. I thought it might be too sweet but it had the perfect amount of nutella inside. A hidden Asian-owned gem in this sleepy town. I love that this donut shop is open 24/7! Great spot to drop in for a treat. The pillow donuts and cream puffs are fresh, light and crisp. They even have vegam options! It can be loud and crowded Thurs-Sun and during finals and midterms. Otherwise, they have great options during the day hours and a nice, artsy atmosphere. Came in for a donut today. I've had them at work before but this was our first time in. We were amused at the variety of flavors there are a lot! I settled on trying a peanut butter bar and he had a bear claw. It came to less than $5. The staff were friendly and attentive, the shop was clean and inviting. We settled in at a nearby park to chow down. Mine was pretty good. However, if they where to squirt a lil strawberry jelly in there with the peanut butter I'm sure Id be addicted!! His bear claw was a bit sweet and he was only able to finish half of it before the sweetness overcame him. That did not stop him from devouring it later that night as dessert! Great selection of donuts. The shop is so cute and great for getting some work done since there's wifi and plenty of outlets. We went mid morning and had plenty to choose from. Tried the docros and the sweet azuki bean donut. It was huge and tasted very fresh. The dough was soft and the azuki filling was just the right amount. The docros were flaky and rich (got custard).
