Worth knowing the story behind it: Peculier Pub has been running on Bleecker Street since 1987, started by a Chinese immigrant family who got their start selling hard-to-find imported beers out of a small West 4th Street deli before turning it into a full bar. The name comes from Theakston Old Peculier, a favorite English ale of the family's, and the place has stuck to that original mission ever since: somewhere north of 300 bottled beers rotating through at any given time plus 27 draft lines, the walls covered in bottle-cap mosaics made from decades of empties. It's a short walk from Washington Square Park, so it pulls a heavy NYU crowd along with the beer nerds, and it gets loud and packed the later it gets. An oldie but goodie! McKenna's Pub has been around forever seems like. I remember going here over…read more20 years ago for the first time (back before I was a Yelper) and I was impressed with the quality of service and reasonable, potent drinks. Revisiting this spot again after so much time has passed, I see their formula and reputation haven't changed at all. With the ever-changing NYC landscape because of super high rents, the W. 14th St strip that McKenna's is located on has changed quite a bit over the years. Businesses have come and gone, but McKenna's has stood the test of time. The bartenders are friendly and quick to serve up drinks. I haven't seen any of them use a measuring apparatus yet (regardless if you want a basic mixed drink or a specialty cocktail). The pub is large with plenty of seating and TV's. They have 2-for-1 drink specials on all drinks every day of the week from 4 pm - 7 pm and from 12 am - 2 am. When you purchase a drink you are given a poker chip for your next drink. If you decide not to use a poker chip by the end of your stay you can always bring it back to be used another time.
