Haved loved this place since they were just a food truck downtown. It is good enough we go back a few times a year, and take out of towners there. I broke with tradition and took a chance this time on the $20 Lobster Lucy, which is the bizarre combo of a Minnesota Lucy (cheese inside burger), and lobster on top. I am torn about giving it a great review ... it was certainly unusual. It was also a struggle to keep the lobster on top. I wound up eating most of the lobster on the side. I will go back to the regular lobster roll, which I rate 5 stars from past experience. However, for taste I give this a 3, an extra star for creativity. Someone must like it. We were with a giant party of New Englanders and lobster roll experts. They all loved theirs, including the ones who also braved the lobster Lucys. Paired with our local brews, yum, everyone said they would come back. Atmosphere, wait staff, quality of food, all consiatent 5s. Price has always seemed high, even back when it was a food truck. I was super excited to come by and was so bummed that at 2 pm, they still had the brunch menu. I went with the Connecticut. Their lobster rolls are what made them famous. I never thought I'd say this but it was too much lobster and it was just a fishy sandwich! However, the lobster Mac and cheese was really good! We ended up dumping part of the lobster from my roll into the Mac and cheese so it worked out nicely. The French fries are really good though! I will not be sharing them. This place is relatively large, especially for the north loop area. But we got seated right away but I'm sure at peak times, it'll be busy! Street parking that is metered is available. Smack Shack was a surprise for me. It's very hard to find good seafood in minnesota with a decent portion size so you feel like your getting your money's worth. And yes, I felt that here. First off, the environment was happy and cheerful. Everyone seemed to know each other. Loud music and if there was the right song playing, people started dancing. Hey...its Minneapolis. Side note: it was a little loud and if your sensitive to loud sounds or people talking loud over the music, would recommend ear plugs. Keep The staff was straight up 5 out 5. Served by Nick. The food was hot and fresh and was served promptly. We had the Lobster Poutine as a starter. Though it was a starter, me and my girlfriend were full from sharing it, lol. It was absolutely delicious! Cajun fries smothered in gravy with melted cheese curds on top. They did not skimp out on the Lobster portion size as well. This dish exceeded my expectations on all levels. 5 out of 5 for that. Then we both had the Shack Burger for the main meal. All though my girlfriend loved it, I was less impressed. First i was happy with the fry portion. The burger was hot and fresh but didnt have a lot of flavor. I give it 2.5 out of 5. But keeping in mind that this place specializesin seafood. Which they did not disappoint. This time the service was great! I came in a little after the kitchen closed to dinner however my server helped me to get the lobster mac and cheese. And it was definitely amazing! I also had a lobster roll (Connecticut style) and it was a bit dry and could use a bit more flavoring but regardless it was delicious. So I first came here MONTHS ago for lunch. It was my first lunch ever in Minneapolis. And I did not love it. Didn't hate it. But I get it - mediocre seafood for 10-15% more money than you might get in other cities around the country might seem appealing because...you know...access to the SEA part of seafood. It was a solid 3 stars then. Anyway, just tried to go back for happy hour and it was such a weird experience, we ended up leaving before getting any food. It's even hard to articulate why it was so weird, but I feel like 1/2 the waitstaff there is on some substance and the other 1/2 is simply untrained. So I checked beforehand if dogs were allowed. And the response I got was "only if they are well behaved" which is...fair. But not friendly? Anyway, so I show up with my dog and ask to do happy hour. The immediate response is "you have a dog. You can't sit inside." .... ok. I didn't ask to sit inside???? So I respond, "Yep. That's fine. Can I get 2 with a dog outside for happy hour then?" Now there are about 8 people standing around. The person I asked this to goes "I'm so sorry. I'm not a host or seater. I can't help you."...again, kindof weird. I figure out I have to go inside and ask so I repeat the request for a table outside and the host goes out and asks THE SAME GUY WHO WOULDN'T SEAT ME AT FIRST where we should be sat. They debate for about 2 minutes all the tables we could sit at (there are like, 5 empty tables, by the way). Anyway, we finally get sat and I ask for a happy hour menu to which this lady who has been standing there the whole time goes "I'm not a server. I can't help you." Are you guys sensing a trend?? Because I am. So I go inside and ask for a happy hour menu and one of the many waiters goes "Oh. We don't serve happy hour on this side. You have to eat the regular menu." First of all, no I don't. Second, I was clear about my HH intentions to begin with. So I go...ok....where is happy hour served? AND this guy goes "Right here at the bar but your dog can't come in." This is starting to get ridiculous. I'm like...listen. I haven't even tried to bring my dog in at all. I don't know why you say you're being dog friendly when you're acting like just having a dog in the 20 ft radius of your restaurant is a health hazard. So I go, "yep. I KNOW. But I see tables outside the bar area. Can I take that?" To which this waiter goes, "I don't know. IM NOT A SEATER." WHAT THE HECK. So I ask this other person that I think is a host if I can take one of the bar tables outside for HH and he goes "You can't bring your dog in." Which at this point I'm rolling my eyes. SO I repeat the request and he then says "I don't know? Can you sit there?" LISTEN. I don't know what I did except bring a dog to the patio. But at this point it becomes super clear that we aren't welcome so we just get up and leave. We went to Smith + Porter and they might not have amazing food or mediocre seafood, but they are SUPER nice and accommodating. Came here on a whim with some family around 4:30 on a Sunday after the Vikings game. The place was quite busy but we were seated right away and chose to sit out on the patio. Overall, it was a decent experience....the server was very friendly and the food was timed well. I do feel this place is overpriced for what you get. My uncle ordered the side of lobster mac that came with 3 pieces of lobster...this was also an upgrade charge since he replaced his fries with it..12$ for 3 pieces of lobster. I am in love with Smack Shack so much so that I choose it every year for my birthday dinner with my boyfriend. My parents also love it here when visiting from out of state - it was on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives so it is a well known spot. Before I come here every time I tell myself I should order something other than the lobster mac and cheese. "Be adventurous! Try something new and exciting!", I tell myself - yet it never happens. I'm really not too upset about it though. We started our meal with some happy hour wine and beer and then the lobster poutine that was included in happy hour. This was my first time trying it and I think it will be my go-to from now on. We joked about licking the bowl clean after all the fries, lobster and gooey cheese was gone. *nervous laughter* For the main entree I, of course, stuck to the lobster mac and cheese. The sauce is ultra rich with pieces of corn mixed in with the pasta giving it the perfect texture. I feel like every time I order this there are more pieces of lobster included, so that's a win! There is no way a human could finish an entire entree sized bowl of this pasta, so there are always hefty leftovers! I am from Wisconsin and have had my fair share of cheese-heavy meals, but this dish always gives me a bit of a stomach ache after due to it being sooooo rich. So be warned, I consider myself a cheese eating machine so it might be worse for other people. The interior of this place is so cute and the outdoor patio seating is dog-friendly. There's typically too much bread, not enough lobster chunks, overly dressed with sauce or butter, or something else to just really bring down my lobster roll experience. Not here at Smack Shack though! The Smack Shack Original lobster roll definitely sets the standard to any lobster roll I ever eat again. Although lightly dressed in tarragon and cucumber, the true lobster chunks and flavor shine through in this roll. Even down to the bread used, you won't find yourself with overly buttered fingers trying to eat this roll up. Simple, yet complimentary flavors with fresh lobster makes this roll a winning dish! Don't forget about the lobster mac and cheese to go with it! Usually I am rarely impressed with mac and cheese, but the al dente texture with the light but creamy cheese was the perfect base to the toppings of lobster bites and just a dash of breadcrumbs. I really like Smack Shack. It's pricey, but the quality is excellent and they done skimp on portions. Obsessed with the clam chowder, it's so creamy and buttery and I think the best I've had. Recently tried the cold peel and eat shrimp appetizer and loved it - the seasoning was perfect, I think maybe a Cajun blend? Oysters on the half shell were delish, the lobster poutine was gigantic and quite yummy! You gotta eat it quickly, though, or it gets a bit stiff/stuck together. On my last trip I had the Massachusetts scallops with beurre blanc, topped with lobster. Scallops were HUGE, perfectly seared/cooked, and I got four! I was expecting three at most. Worth every penny. In the past I've had both the cold and warm lobster roll - both great, but I prefer the warm version, if only because I'm not that into cold mayo-esque sandwiches. Key lime pie was good, but didn't come out super cold and I like mine cold and tangy. Doesn't really matter, though, because I was not there for dessert! We stopped in prior to a Twins game. My husband ordered the Connecticut style lobster roll. He loved it! I ordered a salad due to a gluten allergy. They did offer a few gluten friendly options like lobster roll on lettuce, but I didn't want to pay the price. My husband said the warm bun was required for that, which he really enjoyed. I ended up ordering a lobster cobb salad, minus bread. It was a very large portion and very tasty. We sat on their deck/patio which is great for people-watching. Excellent food, service, and atmosphere. I love the King Crab boil. I love that I can get King Crab there any time of the year. They have great appetizers that rotate throughout the year. I was recently here and was a little disappointed to see the King Crab dip was gone, but the disappointment faded fast when I saw there was crab poutine... mmmm it was so good. Crab cakes are delicious. The chicken wings are meaty and flavorful. I don't like mussels, but everyone I've been there with mows them down and has to refrain from slapping the waiters' hands when they try to take the remaining broth away when they're all gone. The lobster mac and cheese is good, but I can't eat more than one or two bites because it is VERY rich and creamy. The servers there are all wonderful. Very knowledgeable of the menu, helpful if you're unsure of what to get, and attentive to your needs. It does get busy, but you definitely get the attention you need when it's packed. Parking kind of sucks in this part of downtown. If you have $7 I highly recommend getting the valet. Dessert is a must. read more

I finally ate at the airport location and thought it was awesome so had to check out this location. You walk in and see the lobster in a HUGE Pot. The atmosphere is great here to go with just about anyone! We had no wait (6pm on a Wednesday night). I went there with two other people and we all wanted to try their lobster rolls - so each of us ordered on and let the waiter know that we would be splitting them. When they arrived, they were already split! They were all pretty good. Not the greatest lobster roll I've ever had but by and far the best in the twin cities. If you're trying to find it, follow your nose - the smell of Old Bay seasoning will lead you there! Smack Shack is famous for lobster rolls, as well they should be! The Connecticut Style is my personal favorite: big chunks of lobster meat in light butter atop Bibb lettuce in what can only be described as a large hot dog bun. French fries topped with Old Bay are the perfect compliment for this dish. But first, let's talk appetizers: Lobster Guacamole is to die for, and beats out every restaurant here locally (including Cov's lobster guac). The creamy guac scoops well onto thin tortilla chips (and yes, they'll bring more). Red snapper ceviche is a nice secondary dip, and the fried green tomatoes are a fun shareable plate for the vegetarian joining. Other summer favorites include the Lobster Cobb salad, and pell & eat shrimp (which I enjoy cold in the summer and warm in the winter). Looking for something to warm your soul? Let me start by saying that I rarely eat seafood, but when I do, the quality needs to be exceptional for me to come back around to the same place. Smack Shack, I will be back for you. You gave me a taste of vitamin-sea that this Minne-snow-ta girl desperately needed. I ordered the Lobster Lucy ($19.95) and The Hurricane cocktail ($14). My date got the Conneticut Style Lobster Roll ($19.95). Note: anticipate that most items on the menu are twenty dollars or above. The food was divine. My lucy came with a ginormous lobster claw on top and I swear I could've had 5 of those. The Hurricane was fruity but beware, it's lethal. It's one of those drinks that tastes soooo good, but it hits you when you least expect it. The cajun fries are all the rage. I like the spicy kick in the seasoning. My date's lobster roll was fresh and he enjoyed it. They were surprisingly generous with the lobster meat. Our waitress was both attentive and patient with us. She came back a few times to give us time to browse the menu. I would recommend making a reservation if you are going to the Smack Shack because there were very few tables available. I've been to smack shack twice, once for brunch and once for dinner and have left happy and full both times. Let's start with the important stuff: the food. The things I've had here are the crab benedict, lobster mac and cheese, calamari, and the Connecticut style lobster roll. Oh. My. God. The lobster mac and cheese is delicious. So rich, creamy, and drool worthy. The basil hollandaise complemented the crab benedict perfectly and is something I would definitely go back to brunch for. The calamari and the lobster roll were good, but nothing too spectacular. However, the sauce that comes with the calamari is great for dipping fries in! I had a drink called pomp de mule, essentially a grapefruit Moscow mule and that was delicious! Service: l definitely want to make note of the awesome service here. We came with a party of 18 for a friend's birthday and they were very accommodating (we did make a reservation beforehand, we're not savages). Our servers were prompt with taking orders and checking in throughout our time there. Location: The ambiance here is great, spacious and well decorated. Parking in Minneapolis is the bane of my existence but there's a decent amount of metered street parking close by. There is also valet parking available.
