First of all, The wedding cake with almond flavoring. Amazing! So moist and delicious! But.... always a but.... I ordered a custom cake from them this past week. I wanted a unicorn cake with turquoise, purple, and pink mane with yellow accents. I sent an email (with a picture) and talked to them on the phone on what I wanted and they just did purple. Which, is upsetting as my niece(the one I ordered the cake for) doesn't LOVE purple as to turquoise and pink... it wasn't as BANG! as I was hoping for when it was just one color she semi liked. Paid $77 for something that wasn't what I wanted. If they were unsure because they didn't get my email, it would have been nice to receive a call back for confirmation on the colors-especially when paying a hefty price. :( very upset. But other than that, the cake was delicious. I hate to give this place less than 4 stars because the cake was so moist and yummy! Perfect flavor. If I were to give any advise, go for the daily cupcakes! read more

There's a reason this place has won best in the city awards! If you're into gourmet cupcakes and cakes this is your place! I have thus tried their red velvet, peanut butter, lemon drop, carrot cake, and cookies and cream cupcakes. They are all very good. My personal favorite is the lemon drop, they taste like they have fresh lemon zest and juice in them and they are the perfect density. The carrot cake cupcake is also excellent. I have to give this joint a four, but it's like 4.5, and all I gots to say, honestly: frosting. 1) I'm not all about cupcakes. Not crazy about 'em. Don't know why people crave 'em. So there's that. 2) These cupcakes are all about frosting. In my experience, and I've visited a few too many times (and I'll keep visiting), it's the frosting, this luxurious, crazy buttery stuff that extends well higher than the cake and will get lost in your facial hair, should you happen to be growing any. 3) Check the website for all of the flavors. There's always a flavor of the day, too. So many flavors, Flavor Flav is checkin' his neck clock because he knows what time it is. 4) I think it's downright adorable that the biz title is "Smallcakes: A Cupcakery". Someday I would like to open a browniebakery. An excellent choice to deck out the best birthday parties, solid wins for corporate achievement, or just, in our case, rich rewards for parents who drop our kids at birthday parties and want to indulge. Ordered a cake from a man who claims he is the "owner", when we ordered the cake I asked for it to match my daughter invitation. He said ok. I even sent the invitation for reference. My husband went to pick up the cake today and it's red white and blue. Mind you the invitation had pastel colors on it so I have no idea how they claim that they matched it. When I saw the cake I called and complained. It was nothing like we talk about or ordered. Spoke with one lady and she read me the order match invitation donuts and ice cream. She said they could try to fix it but I only had 15 mins till the party started. I was so upset because I have ordered many cakes from here and I have NEVER had this problem. So she said she needed to talk to the owner. So the "owner" calls me back with an attitude like I was in the wrong. He then reads me back a completely different description of the cake and says it's only suppose to have a border. I said ok if that the case ITS STILL WRONG! The colors don't match at all! He had such poor customer service skills he said well your husband accepted it and that's our rule. I said so you aren't going to fix your mistake? And he said nope and hung up on me. We used Smallcakes for a cake and cupcakes for our reception, and we couldn't be more pleased. After having a less than stellar experience at another local shop we decided to give third shop a try. We walked in to a very busy shop and we were helped by a woman whom I believe is an (the?) owner. She took our custom order for our Vegas themed cake, plus a dozen gluten free cupcakes, all while fielding phone calls and customers walking in top pick up orders. She never attempted to rush us through our selections or became impatient, and she didn't try to pan us off on some wedding coordinator, like the other shop had done. But most importantly, the cake wasn't just good looking, it was delicious. The cupcakes also got fantastic reviews, including from a guest with Celiac disease, who has been gluten free since long before it was a common dietary need. read more

I had to try the cupcakes after my aunt and I stopped by subway and saw on the window that Smallcakes was featured on The Food Network. The cupcakes were large and nicely decorated, and I was really excited to try them. However, my aunt and I were very put off by one of the employee's attitudes. She just made it seem like we were inconveniencing her when we had come in, when all we did was look at the cupcakes to decide which ones we wanted. I thought my red velvet cupcake was okay. It's my favorite flavor, so I've tried many different ones. This one was not a winner on my list. The cake part was done right, but the frosting was much too sweet and it had an "off" flavor that I couldn't put my finger on. At almost $4 a cake, it wasn't terribly expensive since it was larger cupcake, but it definitely was not something I'd crave or get again. For red velvet cupcakes, my go-to will still be Susiecakes. read more

We used to order from them all the time, but for some reason they have been totally dismissive of our orders and don't even make the cakes how we want them even with reference pictures. I've also ordered edible icing sheets multiple times from them and called to order some again. The guy I spoke with on the phone was rude and told me, "I've been here 10 years and we've never done that." This place is going downhill and their good customer service is pretty much nonexistent at this point. I recommend putting your money someplace else. read more

We ordered a graduation cake for June 8th. When my daughter & granddaughter went to pickup the cake there wasn't a cake made, and no record of the order. The cake including tax was over $500. The person working (Nicole) was the worst to deal with. She said she was the owner. She was trying to replace the cake with cupcakes when I explained to her that wasn't what we wanted Or ordered! Her Customer service skills were horrible. I even said I was going to write a bad review & her attitude was pretty much go ahead! She couldn't guarantee a cake by the time the party started and if that was already a problem she couldn't say what time it would be ready. She did finally refund what we paid for the cake. The aroma in this cupcakery is intoxicating. Absolutely intoxicating. Love it. The first time I went, I got the Caramel Crunch cupcake, and it was super good! The cake was moist, although the frosting was a tad bit too sweet. The sea salt and pretzel on top balanced everything out nicely. Still, for caramel-lovers, I highly recommend this one! Second time around, I got the Mexican Expresso. Not a fan at all. The frosting was odd tasting, and the chocolate cake on this one was dry. The whole thing was just off-putting and disappointing. Overall though, the place itself is super cute and the workers are all extremely friendly! They've got a lot of flavors to choose from, so hopefully when I go again, I'll have a better experience. HOLY SMOKES!!! that was a goooood cupcake. i had the "wedding cake" cupcake and it was sublime. it was all vanilla; the cake and the frosting but both cake and frosting had a touch of amaretto in it. and the amaretto hung around after the cupcake and it was just delightful. i went with my friend who had the smallcakes version of the hostess cupcake. judging from how quickly it disappeared, it did not disappoint. they had a great variety of cupcakes and some great looking cakes as well. the atmosphere was bright and cheerful. the service was warm, friendly and fast. smallcakes cannot be beat! read more

Wow! The pineapple upside down cake cupcakes were bomb. Ordering and pick up was easy. I would definitely recommend calling a couple days in advance for specialty flavor cupcakes so they are prepared and have the pineapple in stock. As soon as I opened the box of cakes, the smell and beauty of the cup cakes had me mesmerized. The guy at the counter had to re catch my attention ensuring they were everything I dreamed and hoped for before running out the door to get one of these in my mouth. The cake mix wasn't too dry and held together well. There were mini chunks of pineapple in the cake mix as well as the frosting. Plenty of frosting to have with all the cake, maybe a little much but it was well balanced between frosting and cake. I am already dreaming of eating five more you. I like to try a place at least 3 times to make sure I really like it :-) My favorites to order are: - Birthday cake (it has sprinkles on top) - Coconut and it has cream cheese frosting - Sundae (it's beautiful and tastes like a fudge sundae) And a few others. Here is what I love about this place: I typically don't eat the frosting on any cupcake. Frostings are usually hard, stiff and not great. Also, I like my cake to be moist and not to dense - I don't want a pound cake with frosting. This place: The frostings, though elaborate, are ALWAYS light and fluffy and compliment the flavors of the cake really well. The cake itself is always light, fluffy and moist but not overly moist. I went to get cupcakes here today for my birthday. I wasn't having an exciting day anyway due to covid so choosing cupcakes was my highlight. My husband told the sales lady it was my birthday but she didn't even say happy birthday. She seemed bored by how long I was taking to choose my cupcakes and she was not a bit friendly. I have to say this spoiled my experience. These things aren't cheap at $4 each, to get 5 the bill was $21. When I got the cupcakes home I was sadly disappointed in the Red Velvet Cupcake. The frosting was flavorless and greasy. My husband liked his chocolate cream. I won't be back an I'd suggest they get someone friendly to work at the counter. Wish I'd walked out. I am a frequent customer of small cakes and have been for years. Alberto is constantly professional and kind. One of the last times I was in, a man (looking to be on drugs) came in and demanded something. I was with my 5 year old on the other end of the store. Alberto walked around the counter and calmly escorted him out and locked the door. He went back to the register, finished our transaction, walked me out and made sure we left safely. First off... these are easily the best cupcakes I've ever had. If I was rating strictly based on the taste of the product, it'd be a five, hands down. Unfortunately, there are other factors of customer service that come into play. My husband reached out for a custom cupcake order a week before they were needed (their site requests special orders 3 days in advance). He was asked for what he was looking for, then bluntly told it was too complex and they were too busy. Looking over the communication, it very much felt like a brush off due to the effort not being worth the money they'd get out of it during a holiday week. Brenda did not offer an alternative (such as we can do something like this) or move the price point (we can do it for X amount) or adjust the number of items in the order. All of these would have been perfectly workable solves for the situation, and none of them were offered. It's a great product, but deep down, I think it's sad when a customer has to bring their own solution to the table to get something done. And then made to feel like they were a burden rather than valued. read more

First time here. Adorable interior. A lot of cupcakes to choose from, well laid out. I didn't know they had ice cream til I got there, but I was there on a mission and couldn't be distracted. Cupcakes are about $4 each; a dozen is $38. Was there because I couldn't take any more FB posts about their fruity pebbles cupcakes without finally getting my hands on one, but decided to try one of their pretty pink ones too! The white cake/pink frosting one was fine. Somewhat better than a grocery store cupcake (all that overly sweetness in the frosting was a bummer). Not a bad cupcake at all, but probably won't buy another one at that price. The fruity pebbles cupcake however was fantastic. This is what you expect from a specialty spot. The frosting was a bit tart so I'm assuming lemon (or maybe that was in the cake itself. I have a child's palette & I gobble everything so I can't be certain!). The mixture of flavors was spot-on. Great cupcake and a fun treat. Would get a whole box of these for a special occasion. Quirky fun but not at the expense of taste or texture. Great cupcake! They are top heavy and there is even a sign on the counter "Don't shake; Not responsible for cupcakes after they've left the store". So damage must happen a lot The to-go boxes they are packaged in are sturdy though, so unless you drop it you should be fine. Probably eat it on a plate with a fork (that's how they serve it to you inside the store). The staff need some professionalism kicked into them. They have loud side conversations and shout across the store, even when they are at the register with a customer immediately in front of them. That was chaotic and unpleasant. One staff member gave me someone else's cupcake almost because we were getting the same flavors, and there was really no reason for that level of distractedness. Ring me up, say good-bye, and THEN turn to your co-workers and have whatever conversation you need to have. Don't shout across the store. Have your conversations in the back, AWAY from the customer area of the store. read more

I have a terrible sweet tooth, and couldn't wait to get to Small Cakes after seeing a picture of two Duke City Duos go viral on social media. But since the picture had been viewed thousands of times over that same weekend, it was busy when we went and they only had 4 cupcakes left. They were in the process of making and icing more, but when I got to the front of the line the guy wasn't very specific as to what was being frosted, and since it was my first time there it left me a bit confused. We grabbed a seat like many others had done and waited to see what cupcakes would come out from the back. Soon a woman came out to see what was going on, and spent five minutes barking orders at the poor guy who had been helping everyone. As a customer, it was awkward to sit though. I get it - you're abnormally busy and you're stressed, but there's no need to treat employees like that! I got the Duke City Duo, made with a birthday cake cupcake and peanut buttercup ice cream. Holy cow it was sweet! Starting with the whipped cream and thick layer of icing, I had a hard time eating a lot of it because of how sweet it was. For a couple bites it was good though, and stayed well overnight after I threw it in my freezer in hopes I could finish it the next day. They have a lot of cupcake flavors I'd love to try, but I think I just satisfied my sweet tooth for weeks to come so it'll be a bit before I go back. read more
