I have a terrible sweet tooth, and couldn't wait to get to Small Cakes after seeing a picture of two Duke City Duos go viral on social media. But since the picture had been viewed thousands of times over that same weekend, it was busy when we went and they only had 4 cupcakes left. They were in the process of making and icing more, but when I got to the front of the line the guy wasn't very specific as to what was being frosted, and since it was my first time there it left me a bit confused. We grabbed a seat like many others had done and waited to see what cupcakes would come out from the back. Soon a woman came out to see what was going on, and spent five minutes barking orders at the poor guy who had been helping everyone. As a customer, it was awkward to sit though. I get it - you're abnormally busy and you're stressed, but there's no need to treat employees like that! I got the Duke City Duo, made with a birthday cake cupcake and peanut buttercup ice cream. Holy cow it was sweet! Starting with the whipped cream and thick layer of icing, I had a hard time eating a lot of it because of how sweet it was. For a couple bites it was good though, and stayed well overnight after I threw it in my freezer in hopes I could finish it the next day. They have a lot of cupcake flavors I'd love to try, but I think I just satisfied my sweet tooth for weeks to come so it'll be a bit before I go back. read more

And I was impressed from the moment we parked out front, the store is bright and clean with a nice open display cabinet as you walk in showing all the cupcakes they have for sale. There is also a menu on the wall that shows you by the day what they have on the menu. There are certain cakes that they only have on said days. I decided to get myself the caramel cupcake and the birthday cupcake for my daughter, my husband picked out the peanut butter one and the cookies and cream for our son. The lady boxed them up in there cute little pink cupcake boxes (nice touch) and off we went, with my mouth watering the whole drive home. I am a huge fan of these cupcakes. I have a super sweet tooth and the frosting to cupcake ratio is 50/50 which I love. The cupcakes are moist and last for days without going bad. I've been to Small Cakes a lot of times but I've never written a review. Yesterday they had cotton candy cupcakes as one of their customer favorites. It's my favorite but I couldn't make it there before they closed. They were so kind in letting me purchase over the phone and then pick them up today. I can't say enough about how great their cupcakes are! You can't just buy one, you'll regret it when you get home that you didn't get more. The flavors that seem weird turn out to be the best! They have ice cream now too and hands down it beats any ice cream shop in town. The seating area is small but so quaint and welcoming. I love stopping by for a scoop of ice cream and a cupcake. Let me start by saying my daughter and I watch Cupcake Wars ALL THE TIME - so this may be a bit harsh... Good cupcakes! Honestly I have been a fan of this place for a very long time, which made my experiences here the last times I visited especially disheartening. As much as I hate to say it, the staff here is incredibly rude and they almost seem upset at you for being in the building. It's almost like should I apologize for wanting to support you guys? Amazing cupcakes!! They have a seasonal Fall cupcake flavor. The guy behind the counter said it was made with pumpkin, apple, cranberries, and it is topped with pecans. The frosting is the star of the show here, and even then, Pillsbury or Duncan Hines frosting is comparable. $4.26 (after tax) is a bit much for a single cupcake, but you can't put a price on my kiddo's face after getting a cupcake as a reward. read more

They seemed rushed and upset they had to serve a long line of people. Then after telling them twice my treat was to eat "here" they still packed it in box and seemed bugged I sat down and ate it at the table "I guess you want a real fork" was the line I got as I unpacked my plastic eating utensils. Then while I ate I could hear all three staff complaining about a previous customer. Although they were in the next room, the giant open window to that room allowed me to hear all the details. I assumed that after I left they would start to all talk about me as well. When I was done I sat for a bit checking my Facebook, one associate was cleaning the plates right next to me but never offered to clear my things when it was obvious I was finished. So after clearing my own place, it was easy as all I had to do was throw everything away as it was packed in to-go box, I made eye contact with all three staff on my way and not one of them thanked me or wished me a good day. They all started at me as if thankful the place was now going to me empty so they could continue their gossip guilt free. All of this comes after I was warned about this place by a friend who tried to order for her graduation and was told "we are not a good fit for your cake, I am sure another baker can do your cake for you". I should have listened to her, but thought I would give them a try. We have several other local bakeries that have just as delightful treats but are grateful and respectful of their customers. These are probably the best cupcakes I have had in ABQ, better than average but not the stellar cupcakes of some other bakeries in bigger cities. The cake crumb was very good: fluffy, moist, tender and fresh. The frosting could use some work, it was a little fatty/waxy feeling on the tongue. They are pretty expensive at over $3/ea so be prepared for that. I bought a dozen for work and was shocked at the nearly $40 price for the box. The cupcakes are larger than your average cupcake though. Apparently this place has been on the Food Network and in some magazines as there are posters indicating this in the windows. Overall, I'd come back and try out a few other flavors. I would like to see a few more fruity options as most of the selection on the day I went were chocolate based. As someone who has sampled many a cupcake, I can say without hesitation that Smallcakes are the very best. Not only are these cupcakes the most delicious in Albuquerque, but they are also better in comparison to any of the more famous national cupcake franchises. The cupcakes themselves are a generous size and extremely moist. I have even ordered several of the gluten-free options for my family members with wheat allergies and I those were equally as moist and soft as the original. I love the unique flavor combinations that are rotated in with the 15 staple cupcakes. Some of my favorites are Shirley Temple, Cocoa Rojo, and Caramel Crunch. Aside from all the wonderful treats, the staff at Smallcakes is equally wonderful and among the most friendly and genuine I have encountered in the food service industry. The women at the front counter are always quick, friendly, and helpful regardless of whether I am the only customer in the store or there's a birthday party of 15 in the next room. The owner also seems to be very hands-on, as he has been out front mingling with customers almost every time I have been in. This is a nice change of pace and I appreciate upper management that stay directly involved with their consumer base. read more

The frosting really stands out--buttercream flavors that are true to their descriptions. The coconut had big chunks of coconut, and the wedding cake tasted like, well, wedding cake. I didn't even know that wedding cake had a taste until I bit into it and thought, "Wow, this really does taste like a slice of wedding cake". The prices are higher than the grocery store, but I call BS on people who say they get better cupcakes at the grocery store. When Smallcakes first opened I thought it was such a great place! The staff was friendly, the cupcakes were good and the location and the shop are very nice. As I've visited more, the experience has lost its luster, not only for me but for the workers we as well. The cupcakes are very pricey at around $6 a pop and the cakes are even more. If the cake part of the cupcake had more of a variety of flavors and/or fillings the price tag might make it worth it but they basically dress up the top of the cupcake with a plain chocolate, vanilla or red velvet bottom. They also run out of their specialty flavors fairly early so usually by the time I visit all the awesome flavors are gone and my selection is very limited. I've bought a few gift cards here as small thank you and a couple have come back show zero value. On the last visit we had a small snafu with a caramel chocolate cupcake and we haven't been back. read more
