I hope this store improves both cashier training and overall staff professionalism. I brought my basket to the register and placed it in the area where the cashier was scanning my items. I left it there temporarily, as customers commonly do, intending to put it away once my purchase was complete, similar to how one returns a cart after checking out. However, the cashier stopped scanning, pointed to the basket, and said, "Uh uh, that isn't where that belongs," then demanded that I put it away immediately before she would continue. Her attitude was very distasteful and unnecessarily rude. As someone who has worked as a cashier before, I would never speak to a customer in such a demanding manner. If misplaced baskets are a common concern, perhaps the store needs additional staff to help collect them or extra space near the registers for baskets and carts. A customer should not be ordered around in the middle of checkout over something so minor. read more

If I could give this place a no star I would I would like to formally express my concern regarding my experience with Jen. During my interaction with her, I felt that I was treated unfairly and discriminated against due to not having a California ID. While I understand that identification policies may be in place, the way the situation was handled made me feel singled out and uncomfortable. I don't typically come to this store for my regular grocery shopping, but will stop in for select items. Today I needed si sharp cheddar cheese and Sam's club where I normally get it was closed. For a larger block I opted to come to Smart & Final due to them usually having bulk size items. I found what I was looking for in no time. While there I saw that they had an even bigger block of cheese. It was a great value, but I did not need the bigger block for today. The cashier was courteous and checkout was quick. When I entered, it looked like something had spilled on the floor while taking out the trash, as I was inside I saw another employee quickly taking care of the spill. read more

I used to shop there every single week. I loved the customer service and everything about the store before, but lately it's just gone downhill every time I go to buy chickens which I love to buy there, they have none. They never bag my groceries, and they're very lazy. There's usually no carts because they're always out in the parking lot. The manager there is so rude. There is all new people and none of them are part of a team there, everyone is scattered around nobody knows anything and when you ask a question they're rude and don't want to talk to you. Definitely not my favorite grocery store in this side of town, but hey, when in a pinch, or if you're looking for bulk items, this is the place to check out. Prior to coming to Smart and Final, we were going to Restaurant Depot for bulk quantity meat. Unfortunately, we're no longer members of Restaurant Depot, so we had to resort to this place. On a good day, you can find bulk meat for a reasonable price. If you're planning on smoking or grilling for a party, you can def consider this place. The main reason for my three stars is the fact that this place gets packed and there are long lines. So, unless you're willing to wait in those long lines for bulk items, I'd go elsewhere. read more

I shopped at Smart and Final spending close to $200. I bought some produce including cherries knowing that its risky due to spoiled fruit etc. I usually find out when I get home and dont bother to go back. This time I went back with spoiled cherries and my receipt and spoke to the manager. I went and grabbed another bag of the same size. Then the manager weighed the cherries and said I owe her $1.56. I said they should just call it even but she told me they cant give me food for free. I mentioned I spent more than $1.56 in gas for my car plus my time wasted. I asked for my money back, but didnt bring credit card because I rushed back to the store. Managers solution was to remove a few cherries from the bag. This seems like a poor way to treat a customer. They know I spent alot of money and probably thousands of dollars a year at their store. Is that store policy or just poorly trained management? Absolute worst customer service. I called asking to check if they had a soup and the lady I spoke to responds immediately that they don't have the item at the moment. She couldn't even pretend to actually go check?? So I drive over and guess what? I find the item in less than 2 minutes. Their "First Street" brownies used to be really good. In the past year the recipe has been changed, and they are not very good anymore. They are dry and bland now, instead of rich and moist. At parties the brownies are no longer decimated, and are barely touched. My family noticed the same thing. I do not want to buy or eat the First Street chocolate fudge brownies anymore with this disappointing change of quality and flavor. read more

First I'll say this store gets three stars because they always take forever! The lines are horrendous and even if you go to the 10 items or less, plan on a 20 minute wait. I've never shopped a store that consistently had such slow check out. Vons on Foothill in Monrovia comes close. The selection is good, the store is clean and the staff is very friendly. On a Saturday in August, I was in the area and decided to check out new Smart & Final in the new location. It's located in a busy shopping center with planet fitness and other restaurants. The market is clean in each aisle and they sell rotisserie chicken. I was looking for 35 water bottles in a case and waited in line. There was 3 lines open which is nice. I used my coupon and only paid 1.76 for 35 of water bottles. Cheap is it! No one knows about it because cashier didn't know about it. FYI. Best to sign up for email alert for coupons. read more

Review based on customer service. Been to this store for many years. Employees are nice and service ok. Today was different. Called in to store to inquire about a party Ballon kit. Juan the Sr manager happen to pick up the call. Without further questions he told me the sizes they carried and the cost of each without putting me on hold. I so was impressed that I left the parking lot of the store I had contemplated buying it and went straight to smart and final. The tank was up on a shelf so I asked for assist. So happens it was Juan and since jj were no one on his cashier hbline, he closed the register and helped me immediately. Took it down and even showed me how to use it. As I was leaving the store, it was raining. Who do I find in the parking lot picking up the carts? Juan! What a great example of customer service and team work. read more

The newest addition to the supermarket battleground is the Smart & Final Extra. It took over the Ralph's location which closed in 2015. If you haven't been before to an Extra before, it's essentially a bigger version of the store, still carrying Costco sized items like a 5 gallon jug of margarine, but it's also a supermarket with its own produce, meat, dairy sections. Similar to Sprouts market a mile or so away, they also sell grains, nuts, granolas & coffee beans by weight, which is great if you don't want to commit to a prepackaged amount. Their ice cream section rivals that of the nearby supermarkets, offering brands that range from the premium CoolHaus, to an old San Francisco favorite " It's It." There's also Talenti gelato, a nice selection of Haagen Daz & Tilamook. The store is big, and actually feel larger than when Ralph's occupied the space. Being the opening day, it was a madhouse. The parking lot was completely packed and to add to the madness, many vendors were there stocking the shelves as eager shoppers tried to maneuver around each other through the aisles. The prices overall seem competitive against Von's, Albertsons and Ralph's. With so many shopping choices in the area, consumers are sure to welcome another market to the area for price comparison. I will be back to stroll more leisurely in a few weeks, after the frenzy dies down. read more

Brand new Smart & Final Extra opened today. Took over the old Ralph's Market. Located in the same plaza as Starbucks. Plenty of parking. The Smart & Final in Monrovia on Huntington relocated here. So happy this place finally opened because the small city of Duarte needs more market options after Ralph's and Fresh & East closed this past year. Aisles are clean and fully stocked. This place definitely has more than a regular Smart & Final store. The produce section is clean and looks very presentable. But prices here are higher than say Sprouts (my preferred market for fruits and vegetables). Employees were friendly, but this place was pretty crowded (since it's all shiny and new). Will definitely be back (hopefully when the crowds die down). read more

Ever wonder where to purchase those little paper nacho boats, or the paper hot dog bun holders, or a 1,000 pack of those paper cups you get when you visit the dentist? Smart & Final! If you're not affiliated with youth sports organizations (or the American Dental Association...), don't worry-- you're welcome here, too! As the eldest of six boys, our family gatherings are always well attended. Good thing Smart & Final sells bulk meats, burger patties, hot dogs, buns, drinks, a five gallon bucket of pickles... Don't you hate it when you go into an establishment for one thing but come out with everything else except the item you went in looking for?? Except Smart and Final only has one type of cooking oil: corn oil. We were looking for olive oil! My mom also likes chia seeds so that's what we were scooping into the bag provided. There was a brown bag and a plastic bag (for fruits and veggies). How the hell are we supposed to know that the brown bags were ONLY for coffee? We aren't a huge coffee drinking family but the cashier was rude about it. This smart and final is different from what I remembered it used to be. Other smart and finals used to sell items in bundles but every item here was pretty much individually sold. We weren't able to find anything we actually needed here. I am so disappointed in the leadership at this store during the COVID-19 pandemic. They refused to allow me to bring my own bags into the grocery store and then they charged me to buy bags. Grocery stores are making a killing during this pandemic and the least you can do is waive the cost of the bag (10 cents) when you refuse to let people use their own. It just feels like you are taking advantage of the situation rather than thinking of our health. People have lost their jobs and every bit counts. When I mentioned this to the cashier, I got an eye roll and the silence. I get it, it's not her policy but I hope management considers waiving the fee. I gave 2 stars because the inventory was decent but this incident reminds why I don't go to this store. read more

This store never has anything that I want to cook. Everyone knows that black eyed peas are a must for New Year's. They don't carry them. And they never ever have any smoked meat like smoked turkey legs or smoked neck bones. They rarely even have smoked ham hocks. Many people (especially people from the south) use smoked meats for seasoning vegetables like greens and beans. Smoked turkey, smoked ham hocks, smoked neck bones, salt pork, or pickled pork meat. Hi. I gave S&F 5 stars because I always have a good experience... except tonight. The lady in front of me had lots of groceries in her basket, even though she already put some on the conveyer belt. I had 4 items and she said I can go in front. I had to give her my items through the end where the bagging area is cause of the plexus glass. The cashier was so frikin irritated and rude. I was handing her the items and she raised her voice saying " just put them down" I started putting the items in my bag and under her mask says " you can't put your card in!" Four items! Over four items she becomes a rude hag! Handed me my receipt, without saying anything. As I'm leaving the lady behind me said hi how are you and that had said nada. I get it, maybe having a bad day. This one is next to my gym. Prices are ok but better deals to be had at Costco and sometimes Ralphs/Vons. People that ring up are often in deep conversations with their coworkers. A little about me, I'm polite, I take off my hat in restaurants, same w sunglasses when I'm speaking with a cashier and you'll never see me talking on the phone while being rung up as I believe everyone deserves my full attention and I would expect the same from them. If you want the best customer service, you need to shop at the Smart & Final Extra! in Duarte, CA. I was running low on toilet paper and was about to start working from home and I couldn't find any TP at any other stores. Lisa, one of the cashiers at Smart & Final told me that I could ask Mike the manager if he would hold a pack of toilet paper for me (One time, only.) till the next evening, when I got off work, when I was still going into the office. I called Mike, the manager, early the next morning, knowing they were getting a delivery that day, and asked him if he would reserve one pack of TP for me till I could pick it up in the evening when I got off work. He said that he could do that for me one time, only. I never thought that I could be so happy just knowing that I was going to be able to purchase a pack of toilet paper that evening! That's all I needed was my usual purchase of toilet paper. Lisa and Mike saved me from having to continue to search for toilet paper at all the other stores who are also having a hard time keeping any TP on their shelves after a delivery. I have never given a bad review, but yesterday was very stressful. I asked the cashier for help with the rewards app, as I could not do it on my own. She told me " sorry I can't help you." I said I really would like to purchase the Capri Suns and need help scanning it with the App., and she again said" can't help you. She said " it's your phone, not my problem." I said " if you can't help me, can someone who works in the store help me?" she said " it's your phone." I said please call for a manager. I use to love the helpful people in this store. I told her please ring up my other purchases that are not on the rewards App., and she said " no, this happens all the time that people like you may not end up purchasing them all. I said, but I am. I just need a little help. She finally got the manager, and I quietly told the manager I am not mad, but this use to be a very hepful nice place to shop. Not following health protocols regarding to covid, I felt very unsafe when entering. Isn't it a health protocol or something to at least count how many customers walk into the store? All beat up I guess they just expect that you will not spend the time to take it back. Hope the new store opening is not at this quality. So my search for a replacement supermarket lead me here to Smart & Final. I've come here once before, but never gave it much thought. Now I take a serious look. You're welcome to come along... They call themselves a small warehouse, like a small Costco or Sam's Club. And a very small one at that, carrying mainly food products (sorry, no furniture or prescription glasses here). They have plenty of items in bulk, like candy, ice cream tubs, cereal, soda... They also have trash cans and a few gardening tools. Being that they are a smaller store, they may not carry everything you may need. They cater to offices, social gatherings (BBQ, sports viewing, etc.), and college students. They have a small produce area, so not exactly a good place to get fruits and veggies. I was looking for Kellogg's Corn Pops for my brother, which they don't happen to carry (at least on it's own; they do have the mixed boxes w/Apple Jacks and Fruit Loops). And those gallon Minute Maid Fruit Punch? Sorry, not here either. While they lack in some areas, Smart & Final also carries items that supermarkets may not. I've never seen White Castle burgers anywhere else. They carry a lot of salsa in the refrigerated section. A good place to pick up empty glass jars and Styrofoam take-out boxes. As far as prices, they are at an affordable price range if you shop around. Some items are cheaper than others, others are more expensive. Whether good or bad, you don't need any membership fee or special scanning keychain card to come (personally I hate those). Milk is about the same as most supermarkets ($2.75 each if you purchase 2). Soda is a bit pricier here (though they carry Mexican Coke bottles in bulk!). Their generic name brand goods named "First Street" does offer a cheaper alternative to some name brands. If you take it for what it is, it's a decent place to grab food for the household. Wish the venue was a bit larger though. NOTE: You can only enter the store going eastbound on Huntington Drive. I was pleasantly surprised today when I went inside our new Smart and Final Extra. They were right when they touted to our neighborhood that they would bring in more fresh produce and items at a reasonable price. We now have a nice market that replaced the Ralph's that used to occupy this space. We also still have the friendly associates from their former location on Huntington Drive and California. There's also a wider selection of meats, dairy, and other fun foodie items. They also offer more in the way of floral items and cold foods as well as household items. They're still the place to shop for your small restaurant and catering needs. I'm glad they moved closer to me! read more

The manager of Smart and Final in Duarte, California refused to take action on the non-activated gift certificate for Amazon for $50.00 I, the gift certificate recipient, received this Amazon gift certificate which Amazon cannot recognize probably due to the store failing to activate the card upon payment. Proof of payment and proof of non-acceptance by the merchant (Amazon) were shown to the manager. This manager refused to honor it and instead told the customer (the buyer of the gift certificate) to contact the head office herself. The buyer had to go to the store and deal with this 3 times to no avail! There was no other recourse but to file a dispute claim with the credit card company. But even this failed, because the credit card company sided with Smart and Final and so the buyer eventually lost. This is wrong read more

This Smart and Final is conveniently on Huntington Drive in Duarte, CA. It is a fairly large grocery store. They may not have everything you want, but you should be able to find what you need. They have fresh produce and lots of other frozen or packaged food. I like to stop by there on the way to work to pickup what I need for the rest of the day. read more
