Went in yesterday got their flyer at door had Foster Farm fresh chicken wings at a great $1.99 price. This time they had First Street Wings at $3.49 (no deal) in stock but they would not give me the sale price as they said they are waiting for a delivery of Foster Farms. It is either intention or incompetence to run out on a lead item Sat of a holiday weekend, then to refuse to sub your own brand. You know this is a great alternative to Costco. I've had a better experience with their perishables, especially fruit and vegetables then Costco. They seem to last longer. Also unlike Costco which by the way I really like, Do you have the option to buy smaller portions. If you have hundreds of bunnies, they have a 50 pound bag of carrots for like 14 bucks. My wife would kill me. We also have chicken wings which I really like in breasts That have skin and bones. I'm like Costco they have very nice people to help you. Makes me feel like in and out. Although sometimes The lines are long, but like Costco still open a new line up and take the person is waited the longest over to the new line. Last thing, you don't have to buy a credit card you don't have to buy a membership you don't have to give them your phone number so everybody online can hear what your phone numbers, which is a challenge especially if you're a pretty girl. Many people think this store is like a Costco, but more people are realizing they can get many of their regular groceries, pet, and cleaning supplies here for a lot less than regular supermarkets. They do have some bulk items and catering supplies, but I now do 80% of my shopping here. The store is clean, they have a huge produce section, including organic, lots of frozen items, and a large and varied bakery section. They even have fancy cheeses. The staff are very helpful and friendly. My only complaint is that there are usually only 2 checkout lanes open out of 6 or 7, and the store is always busy, so checkout times are too long. I always seem to get stuck in line behind the weirdo trying to buy 4 oz of ice cream with a stack of Target coupons. (They do accept manufacturers coupons, but not Target, buddy!) read more

They make sure that you can find whatever you are looking for; ask you how your day is going; and are friendly when checking out to leave. The produce is always fresh and the selections in the rest of the store are great! I can get in and out of the store easily. For entertaining, they have a great selection of alcoholic beverages. Longest lines and nonexistent customer service. I only come here bc it's extremely close to my house or else I never would. Every time I go in they have 1 line open. Maybe 2 if they called for help but either way you're waiting 15 minutes at the checkout. Today was the 3rd time I've been waiting jn line for 10 minutes and when an employee comes to open up and they don't tell any customers and immediately start checking out other associates at the register who are on break. They don't care about customers. They care about what they are going to do when they get off. Also, Ask any associate about a product and they look dumbfounded. read more

Closet grocery store to my parent's place. They may not always have the cheapest stuff, but I'd say it was comparable to nearby local chain markets and it being within a mile distance makes it worth the few extra cents you may pay on items. I remember when this place required a club card to purchase anything (it was a free club card, but annoying nonetheless); glad they did away with that. The interior is nice and organized, a good produce section up front. Aisles are wide enough to push a cart through. Lines at checkout can get long but they move pretty quick. Cashiers have always been friendly. Located in a small strip mall with The Habit, Jersey Mikes, Dominos, Yogurtland, etc., the parking situation can get a little hairy, especially at lunch time on weekends. I've never had to resort to parking on the street or just leaving in general because of lack of parking though. Cars are constantly coming and going. I have been shopp at this store for over 13 years but today was the very last time I will shop there. I have problems with 4 of the items I purchased. the root beer case of 6 cans were taped with clear tape to cancel that there were only 5 cans not 6 in the pack. The coco puffs cereal was also taped inconspicuously with clear tape to conceal an open internal plastic bag. 2 ice creams were full of ice crystals as if they defrosted and refrozen. They don't have every variety. But they do have everything to you need...the basics. It's convenient for me (I live close by) and they close fairly late. Service is decent. After many (many) years and numerous attempts to have a good experience at this store, I have finally given up. There is simply no reason for me to ever return. Here are all the reasons I am now choosing not to: 1) Their produce is terrible and expensive. My last visit (ever): the bananas I bought last week looked fine, but had been completely squished to a pulp inside the peels, due to damage done earlier the same day, as there was no external bruising evident. Soft and mushy, yet still half green (I like them greenish) with a texture like pudding = inedible. I threw out all but one of the bunch. Their strawberries, while out of season were $5.49/lb. This is $2 more than Trader Joes--and they looked old and terrible (visible mold). I passed. I foolishly bought blueberries instead, which were $0.75 more than they would have been at TJ's--and TJ's blueberries are fantastic, large, plump and juicy. These were small, dry and flavorless. I used about half and tossed the rest. I did buy on onion which was nice enough, but the particular variety had a very firm outer layer--TJ's peels the outer layer from their onions to make them safer to cut. S&F does not (I obviously buy a lot of stuff at TJ's). 2) They never have enough checkstands open. They usually only have one or two open, and the lines for each are typically 6 deep, at the minimum. If it is after dark, they have one open, and I have seen lines a dozen deep (and walked out every time--I am not standing in line for 15 minutes to buy $40 worth of stuff). 3) The First Street generic store-brand products are garbage. Every First Street product I have ever bought has been crap. Seriously: ice cream, popcorn, paper plates, chips, milk, eggs, donuts, cookies, yogurt, frozen goods (including veggies), cheese, bread, cream cheese, you name it--it is always the worst version of that item I have ever tasted/used. Their First Street brand is obviously produced very cheaply, with quality and flavor not criteria used in the product selection process--only cost. I stopped buying it some time ago. The only item with the First Street brand name on it which is even close to passable are bagels, and even those are mediocre at best. You want a quality, store-brand generic product from a large-quantity store? Kirkland from Costco not only blows First Street away on every measurable level, but the cost is generally less, even after you factor in the cost of a Costco membership. Even Ralph's Kroger brands are higher quality than First Street, which seems roughly on par with Wal-Mart's craptastic generic products--even Target's generic brand is better, across the board. 4) For some inexplicable reason, they do not sell the one flavor of potato chips I like the best: Lay's Cheddar & Sour Cream. They sell all the rest, just not that one--no clue why. 5) This store has two large doors. After dark, only one is ever open. 6) The staff mostly seem unhappy and bored, displaying exactly zero enthusiasm on any level. The checkers at TJs are friendly and sociable, happy to have what seems like a good job with a good company. The checkers at S&F remind me of the accountants in that Monty Python movie. Sorry, S&F, I'm done. Your quality game is weak, your produce is terrible, your prices are high, and your lines are long. read more

I never shopped here until I moved to the area but it's awesome! The staff is nice and the prices are great. They have a 24-pack of assorted La Croix sparkling water for $6.99. We came in just took look around and see what the deals were like compared to other grocery stores and ended up filling half the cart with goodies. As the father in a family of ten who does all the grocery shopping, I split my grocery shopping between a Costco and Smart&Final. In fact, I am in S&F at least three times a week to supplement my Costco trips. I spend $200 per week at S&F and put up with their often long lines because it is convenient - less than a mile from my house. Since this coronavirus stuff went down, they hired extra security. Since policies are changing daily, the security guard in this photo threatened - unprovoked - to throw me out of the store b/c I brought in my own reusable bags (S&F policy, not city at time of shopping trip). Even though it has cost me more this past week for the same type of groceries, I have taking my business elsewhere. It's sad. I have been going to this location since it opened many years ago. I no longer feel safe. There was a transient aggressively panhandling tonight. I was scared to go to my car. I told the young male manager tonight at 5pm, and he told me there was "nothing I can do." Yes, there is a no trespassing sign. It is private property. Someone could have offered to call police, ask him to leave, walk me to my car safely. Nope, manager could not be bothered. It is private property. There should be a security guard. Too many bad things have happened. People have been spit on, assaulted, etc. I just wanted some damn chicken. Do I want to risk my life over it? No. I am better off going to Costco. Value matters: for customers service and time spent getting what they need. Products we buy, has to be fresh, has to be what's advertised and if perishable, the expiration date on product must accurate. Meaning the product cannot ferment and grow dark mold on it before the expiration date. This was my case, I bought a Italian variety pack of cheese unopened when I purchased it last Friday. When I opened is Saturday an entire group of slices had the green mold covering all sides of this type of cheese. I know sometimes this happened but usually after the expiration date not ever have I seen mold on cheese three to four weeks PRIOR to the expiration date. What kind of cheese is this? Today 8-22-22 I returned it to the Woodland Hills Smart and Final Extra store. My wife did not want to take the time to return it. Because she was busy, or better yet did not want to take what little time she had to return an $11.00 item. I on the other hand felt it was important for the store to see the specie product I was returning that had rotting cheese 3 weeks prior to expiration. I figured that this was essential that I return it so management can determine what action to take, in my mind this was completely negligent to package a product with an already expired shelf life and pass it along to unknowing customers. To me it's the store's responsibility for selling it to me! The store did't check or doesn't check the dates stamped on the products of their items they sell. So to answer my wife's question why did you bother returning the item? It's only $11.00 ! Don't you have work to do? My wife is right I don't really have time, it seems everybody is realizing how little time is available to fo what I did to return this stupid cheese package. But now what unfolded forced me to to write this down and explain why and hope others reading would do better, When I went back to the store a tall dark hair bust cashier was in the process to open a register, before he moved the Mobil display blocking entrance to pass to pay, I showed him the wrapped cheese and I asked if I can return this item. Thinking that he would take the item wrapped in a plastic bag with the purchased receipt in the bag. To my surprise he said I can help you after I check out this customer first. I was standing right at the checkout point and customer was at that time unloading her cart to checkout. I had to squeeze by the customer to position myself behind her so I didn't loose my place in line to return the product I already waited in line to purchase, plus I had to get in my car to drive myself to return the product and inform management what I ended up buying. I may not have spent the time had the cashier not responded the way he did. After he checked out the customer he dug in the bag grabbed the receipt and mumbled something like "..refund of ten dollars and..." I was still fuming at the idea of waiting in line to return an item the store sold to me with an expired perishable with "still good date" on it. Dear store management we shop at your store on s strictly voluntary basis, you are not the only one selling cheese! My returning s expired item was s choose I made to help you better manage your salable items. Returning items is not a benefit to me as much as it is to you. Unless your policy is serve all new customers to make a sale come first. Returning customers bringing products back comes last because "that requires giving back money". Not sure which policy you enforce from experience making money tillers. Maybe this paradigm could be helpful for you to restructure because nowadays days time is still a challenge to all including your cashier who said I have to do do my job as the new customer has priority. Beware of buying items on their sale rack.... they try to charge you full price at the register. They need to learn how to properly label sale items with the price and ring them up correctly. I used the delivery service several times. I have used this service from other grocers with no problems. Each time the S&F delivery contained mistakes. On the most recent experience, I ordered a 5 lb box of regular tomatoes. They brought a box of Roma tomatoes, most of which were spoiled. I called customer service who apologized and said that they would refund the cost to my account. Over the next several weeks, I contacted customer service several times but despite them telling me that it would be done, it has yet to show up. This wasn't the only mistake on that order, but a box of rotten tomatoes is disgusting. This is no way to run a business and customers have lots of choices. I waited 3 weeks to write this as I wanted them to have an opportunity to g fix the problem. So far they haven't done so. I'm sure Ralph's, Sprouts and others will appreciate my business. After publishing the above, my refund finally appeared. The company reached out. That's a move in the right direction. Still it shouldn't have taken almost a month to fix a simple problem. read more

I had 10 minutes before my shift started half a block away from smart & final. I ran in to get a broom, and got in line. It was 7:50 p.m. . There were two check stands open, and about 10 people in each line. Angie, the checker, called for additional help. No one responded. The phone rang, and she answered it, I heard her say that the store manager was not there at that time, she requested someone to answer that call. No one picked up that call, as long as I was im line. I left the store at 8:03 p.m., 13 minutes after I arrived. It probably took me a minute and a half to get the broom that I needed, as I know where they are located in the store. So, not only was I aggravated, I know that the checker, Angie, was embarrassed by the lack of support she was receiving. I let her know I would be making a review. The prices and selections are ok, there's no bakery, meat department or deli so most stuff there is pre-packaged which is why I don't look to them for regular grocery needs.
